USA Hockey names first dozen players to world junior men's hockey team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CP) - Michigan goaltender Al Montoya and Mississauga IceDogs forward Patrick O'Sullivan were among the first 12 players named to the U.S. junior men's hockey team Thursday.

O'Sullivan, a Minnesota Wild draft pick, scored twice in the third period to lead the Americans to a 4-3 win over Canada in the final of the 2004 world under-20 championship in Finland.

Montoya, the sixth overall pick in this year's NHL draft by the New York Rangers, was named top goaltender of the tournament with a 6-0-0 record, a 1.33 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage.

The U.S. will try to defend its title on home ice at the 2005 world junior hockey championship in Grand Forks, N.D., and Thief River Falls, Minn., from Dec. 25 to Jan. 4.

Of the dozen players named Thursday by USA Hockey, eight played for the team that beat Canada for gold in Helsinki. The rest of the 22-play lineup will be announced in December.

Defenceman Ryan Suter, a first-round draft pick of Nashville, will play in his third world under-20 tournament if the Predators make him available. Suter is currently playing for the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals.

Sarnia Sting forward Dan Fritsche, who played 19 games for the Columbus Blue Jackets last year, is also on the roster. He has yet to play a game this season following shoulder surgery in September.

Other veterans include North Dakota forward Drew Stafford (Buffalo) and Wisconsin's Jake Dowell (Chicago).

"The players we named today represent some of the finest college and junior players in the country," head coach Scott Sandelin said in a release. "The high level of experience and leadership that our veterans bring, combined with the energy and skill of each of the new players will, I believe, make this team a sure competitor in defending the championship in Grand Forks.

"The ongoing player evaluations and final player selections will be critical for our ultimate team success."

Forwards Adam Pineault of the Moncton Wildcats and Ryan Callahan of the Guelph Storm were the other Canadian Hockey League players named to the team.

Hockey Canada will invite players to a selection camp in Winnipeg Dec. 10-15 and will name the Canadian team at the conclusion of that camp. The selection camp roster is expected to be announced in early December.

Revenge could be sweet if the boys from up here avenge last year's loss by winning the WJC on American soil. :canada: ;)

McKenzie: Tough pick for Canada in goal?

If there is a question mark for Team Canada, it's a big one, and it's in goal. Who is going to tend net for head coach Brent Sutter's team?

Actually, the most pressing query right now is which four goaltenders will even get invited to the final evaluation camp in mid-December in Winnipeg, never mind who makes the team.

Team Canada director of player personnel Blair Mackasey was in Kootenay on Wednesday night looking at Medicine Hat Tiger goalie Kevin Nastiuk, whose numbers in the WHL are out of sight.

He has 12 wins against two losses, six shutouts (edited to add: Now 7), a goals-against average of 0.98 and a save percentage of .961. Nastiuk wasn't at the summer evaluation camp but he has been, by far, the best young Canadian goalie this season and seems a virtual lock to get one of the four invites to the final camp.

Another strong bet to be invited is Prince Albert's Rejean Beauchemin. Sutter designated him as the best goalie coming out of the summer camp, but he's only been so-so for the Prince Albert raiders this season. Still, that summer performance means a lot.

The consensus second best goalie coming out of the summer camp was Mississauga's David Shantz, but like Beauchemin, he's had a real up and down season for the Ice Dogs, but he's still a decent bet to be in Winnipeg.

If so, that leaves only one available spot, with lots of competition. Kootenay's Jeff Glass played well Wednesday night against Nastiuk and has been solid so he's in the running, as is Kamloops blazer big man Devan Dubnyk, who like a lot of the goalies this year, has been inconsistent.

Seattle's Bryan Bridges, who has great numbers, is also getting some consideration. The same goes with Sarnia's Ryan Munce and Justin Peters of the Toronto St. Mike's Majors.

Whatever happens on the goaltending front, it's going to be the team's number one question mark and it's going to be a different look. It will be the first time in 10 years Canada's national junior team doesn't go with a no. 1 goalie from Quebec or have no goalie from Quebec on the team. And if Nastiuk or Beauchemin or Glass secures the No. 1 spot, it will be the first time since Trevor Kidd (who?) in 1992 that a Western League goalie starts for Canada at the world juniors.

For TSN.ca, I'm Bob McKenzie.

For lgc.com, I'm...................

Horton unlikely at WJHC

TORONTO -- It's looking more and more that Canada will try to win the World Junior championship without Nathan Horton of the Florida Panthers.

Horton is playing for the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL and sources say the Panthers are willing to loan him to Team Canada but only starting Dec. 20, which is five days before Canada plays its first game at the world juniors in Grand Forks, N.D.

"We feel we've given Hockey Canada ample opportunity to utilize a player that is very important to our organization," Florida Panthers general manager Mike Keenan told Hockeycentral. "We have a responsibility to our partners in San Antonio and our ownership, as well as his teammates and the coaching staff. So, releasing him on Dec. 20 for the World Juniors seems more than fair."

But Hockey Canada will announce its official world junior roster on Dec. 16, four days after training camp opens in Winnipeg. And Hockey Canada has a longstanding policy of not adding players to the roster after the official announcement unless there is a hole to fill because of injury.

Sources say the Panthers have tried to convince Hockey Canada that this is an abnormal season because of the NHL lockout and that if NHL games were being played, Horton would not be available.

"By releasing him on the 20th of December, we're allowing him to play in two pre-tournament games in addition to the Championship. If that doesn't work for Hockey Canada, then that's their decision," said Keenan.

The Panthers also feel Horton is too valuable to the Rampage to have him out of the line-up for almost three weeks, which could cover the start of the world junior training camp through to the end of the tournament. Horton would miss four games between Dec. 12-20.

"The AHL isn't junior hockey," Keenan said. "We're talking about a professional player and we're financially on the hook, not just for Nathan, but for the player we'll have to pay to replace him in San Antonio for the seven games he'll miss there (if released earlier than the 20th)."

Sources also say Hockey Canada is extremely reluctant to agree to the Panthers' terms because it would set a precedent. They're worried that the Rimouski Oceanic, for example, would then say Sidney Crosby would be held back until Dec. 22 because he wins games and puts fans in the seats.

Ahhhhhhh, Mike Keenan, what are we going to do with you?

Keenan is such a piece of work isn't he? I can't wait to see Horton next week when San Antonio plays Norfolk (folks who have DirecTV, Comcast Sports Chicago is now on the premium sports channels and ComcastCHI is broadcasting most of the Admirals games-fyi...) and what a boon to Team Canada to get him (???)

But Keenan has his points as well.....

McKenzie: Nicholson says no to policy change

TSN.ca Staff

11/15/2004
As much as Canada's national junior team would love to have forward Nathan Horton in the lineup for the World Junior Championship, Hockey Canada isn't about to alter its long-standing policy.

And that is, if a player can't be made available for the entire final evaluation camp in mid-December, then that player isn't eligible to play in the tournament, which this year starts on Christmas Day in North Dakota.

Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson reinforced on Monday that there's no thought to changing that policy now that Florida Panthers general manager Mike Keenan has put conditions on Horton's involvement with the national junior team.

Keenan said Horton - who is playing for the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL - would only be released on Dec. 20, and if that isn't good enough, then Horton won't be playing.

Nicholson said he hopes Keenan might see fit to change his mind, which is doubtful, but would rather maintain the policy than deal with the potential fallout of a change.

Nicholson fears that if Horton is excused from the camp but plays in the tournament, many others such as Sidney Crosby in Rimouski will be looking for the same consideration.

The last time Team Canada allowed a player to be airlifted in after the evaluation camp was in 1992, when Eric Lindros joined the team in Fussen, Germany. That year was a disaster and the policy was put in effect after that.

Of course, Canada hasn't won a world junior title since 1997, so some would suggest a change in policy might be in store.

No way, according to Nicholson.

Meanwhile, the national junior team will find out Tuesday whether the Boston Bruins will release forward Patrice Bergeron to play in the tourney. Bruins' general manager Mike O'Connell said a final decision would be made in the next 24 hours. < <<WOW

Sources suggest it's looking good for Bergeron to be part of Team Canada, including the evaluation camp, but that the Bruins have some manpower issues to address with their Providence farm team before the loaning of Bergeron can be made official.

For TSN.ca, I'm Bob McKenzie.

Casey Borer (Canes 3rd round choice at the draft this year) is selected for the US Jr team:

December, 2004
Men's hockey: Huskies defenseman named to junior team
Kevin Allenspach
kallenspach@stcloudtimes.com
PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The wait is over for Casey Borer. He can't tell you all the names that will be announced today when the U.S. World Junior team is finalized in a 1 p.m. teleconference, but he knows his is one of them.

Documents informing him of his selection trundled out of the fax machine in the St. Cloud State hockey office Monday afternoon and head coach Craig Dahl informed him of the news just before the Huskies hit the ice for practice.

"It's a great feeling and I really wanted to be a part of it," said Borer, who first made what is now an undeniable impact on USA Hockey when he played for the U.S. National Team Development Program before coming to St. Cloud State. "I'm looking forward to it, but I want us to take care of business against Minnesota this weekend first."

The tournament, which features the best players in the world under 20 years old, will be held Dec. 25-Jan. 4 in Grand Forks, N.D. It likely will be the biggest hockey event of the season because of the NHL lockout. With no NHL games going on, general managers, scouts, agents and even big-time star players will be on hand to see the Americans try to defend their first gold medal.

The first exhibition game is Dec. 19. Borer will join the team Dec. 16.

"That means I've got a lot of homework to cram in," said Borer, whose fall semester finals are scheduled to begin next week. "I know some of the other guys are going to have tests proctored up there (in Grand Forks). Maybe I can do that, too."

Borer will miss two St. Cloud State games in the Everblades College Classic. The Huskies will play Maine on Dec. 28, and either Boston College or Cornell on Dec. 29 in Estero, Fla. He's not jealous of missing any fun in the sun, though. And the setting of Engelstad Arena is just as good to him as a trip anywhere in the world.

"I wouldn't want to go anywhere else," said Borer, a third-round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in last summer's draft. "The games are going to be played on your soil and there is going to be great competition with the Canadians coming down and all the teams from Europe coming over."

They won't have some of the same big names they did last time around in Finland. Tournament MVP Zach Parise and team captain Mark Stuart, two former WCHA stars, are too old. But goalie Alvaro Montoya, three defensemen (Ryan Suter, Jeff Likens and Matt Hunwick), and four forwards (Patrick O'Sullivan, Jake Dowell, Dan Fritsche and Drew Stafford) all return and were among 12 players named to the team last month. Suter and O'Sullivan also played on the 2003 World Junior Team.

"We're going to have to have a lot of guys step up, but I think we can do it," Borer said. "And when you've got a guy like Montoya, he can make up a lot of the difference."

Borer will become the fourth player in Huskies history to make a U.S. World Junior Tournament roster. Forward Matt Cullen was the first, playing in the 1996 tournament in Boston. Forward Mark Parrish and defenseman Josh DeWolf were selected to the team for the 1997 tournament in Switzerland, but a hip injury kept DeWolf from playing. Cullen and Parrish each scored a goal and collected three assists in their World Junior experience.

Cullen's team finished fifth. Parrish's team won a silver medal, the highest U.S. finish until the 2004 tournament.

Nothing less than gold is what Borer's team will be after, however.

"I hope everybody's expecting us to win, because I certainly am," Team USA coach Scott Sandelin, head coach at Minnesota-Duluth, said before his team played Nov. 26-27 at St. Cloud State.

Borer played well in the series and Sandelin had good things to say about him. He wouldn't publicly say Borer would make the team, but he will today.

West is best in Junior selection camp list

The West is clearly the best when it comes to Canada's national junior team final evaluation camp.

Twenty-oneΒ*of the 32 players invited to the camp, which opens Dec. 12 in Winnipeg, are from the Western Hockey League. That includes four of four goaltenders invited, seven of 10 defencemen and 10 of 18 forwards.

"We are fortunate to be in a unique position this year, whereby we have wealth of experience with twelve players returning from the 2004 silver medal winning National Junior Team," said Bob Nicholson, President of Hockey Canada.Β*

"Hockey Canada's Program of Excellence continues to set new standards on the world scene and the quality of players invited to the camp is a testament of the hard work and commitment of all involved in the Canadian minor hockey system."

The four goalies who will compete for the final two spots are Rejean Beauchemin of the Prince Albert Raiders, Devan Dubnyk of the Kamloops Blazers, Jeff Glass of the Kootenay Ice and Kevin Nastiuk of the Medicine Hat Tigers.

The seven WHL defencemen include four returnees - Dion Phaneuf of the Red Deer Rebels, Brent Seabrook of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Braydon Coburn of the Portland Winter Hawks and Shawn Belle of the Tri City Americans - plus Cam Barker of the Medicine Hat Tigers, Shea Weber of the Kelowna Rockets and Mike Green of the SaskatoonΒ* Blades. The only non-WHL players invited to challenge for seven blueline spots are Danny Syvret of the London Knights, Kyle Quincey of the Mississauga Ice Dogs and Alex Picard of the Halifax Mooseheads.

Up front, the contingent of 10 WHLers is led by returneees Ryan Getzlaf of the Calgary Hitmen, Nigel Dawes of the Kootenay Ice and Jeremy Colliton of the Prince Albert Raiders. Other WHL products aiming to make it as forwards are: Dustin Boyd of the Moose Jaw Warriors; Eric Fehr of the Brandon Wheat Kings; Colin Fraser of the Red Deer Rebels; Andrew Ladd of the Calgary Hitmen; Clarke MacArthur of the Medicine Hat Tigers, Stefan Meyer of Medicine Hat; and, Ryan Stone of Brandon.

The OHL forwards invited include returnees Jeff Carter of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds; Mike Richards of the Kitchener Rangers and Anthony Stewart of the Kingston Frontenacs as well as a pair of London Knights - Corey Perry and David Bolland.

The QMJHL is represented by returnees Sidney Crosby of the Rimouski Oceanic and Stephen Dixon of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. QMJHL grad Patrice Bergeron, who played for the Boston Bruins last season and is currently with Providence in the AHL, is also on the list of 32.

The final team of two goalies and 20 skaters will be named on Dec. 16. Canada plays it first game of the tournament on Christmas Day in Grand Forks, N.D.

The team will be coached by Brent Sutter, a former NHL player who is owner, manager and coach of the Red Deer Rebels. He and Hockey Canada director of scouting Blair Mackasey chose the players for the selection camp roster.

"The Western league now is very strong and very deep and obviously reflective in the number of the players that are here," Mackasey said.

The Minnesota Wild opted not to make Brent Burns available for a second straight year as he is being converted from a forward to a defenceman with the Wild's farm team in Houston.

The Florida Panthers have said forward Nathan Horton can play for the Canadian junior team, but not until Dec. 20. Hockey Canada's policy is that players must report on the first day of selection camp and no later, so Horton was not included on the roster announced Monday.

The NHL lockout kept players who might have otherwise been unavailable to the team in the junior ranks, which contributed to a record number of players returning to the Canadian team for a second year.

The pool of Canadian players born in 1985 is particularly deep and talented and this year's roster is smaller number than the 34 to 37 players invited in recent years.

All that combined to make an invitation to even try out for the team tough to get. So there were some high-end junior forwards left off the selection camp roster, including Prince Albert's Kyle Chipchura, Brampton's Wojtek Wolski, Moncton's Steve Bernier and Rimouski's Dany Roussin and Marc-Antoine Pouliot.

OUA BATTLES BELARUS IN INTERNATIONAL HOCKEY IN WOODSTOCK

November 17, 2004 - Woodstock, ON - Ontario University Athletics (OUA), in conjunction with the Woodstock Host Committee, are pleased to announce that the OUA men's hockey all-star team will play an International exhibition series against the Belarus National Junior team at Woodstock's Southwood Arena on December 17 and 18.

The OUA squad will represent Canada at the 2005 World University Games in Innsbruck, Austria (January 12-22), while the Belarus National Junior team will compete at the 2005 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in Grand Forks, North Dakota (December 25-January 4).

The OUA All-Stars, comprised of the top university hockey players in Ontario, will also hold their pre-tournament training camp in Woodstock from December 15-19. In addition to the two exhibition games, the camp will feature a children's skate with the players and a coaches' clinic. A portion of the ticket sales from both exhibition games will go to support Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

"Holding the training camp in Woodstock provides a great opportunity for promoting the City as well as bringing top International hockey to the local fans," said Host Committee Chair Jim Bechard.

"The exhibition series with Belarus is a chance for our players to showcase the level of hockey played in the OUA," said OUA President David Dubois. "The games will also be excellent preparation for the upcoming World University Games."

Yes, that is my uncle who is the Host Committee Chair. I did all of the graphics work for this mini-tourney, too (tickets, promo posters, event program, etc.)

Belarus juniors no pushovers

A team of Ontario university all-stars was given all it could handle in a 5-4 win.

RYAN PYETTE, Free Press Sports Reporter Β*

WOODSTOCK -- Here's a warning for the rest of the countries at the world junior hockey championship -- don't underestimate Belarus. Playing without their top three forwards, the former Soviet republic's junior side held its own against an older, stronger team of Ontario university all-stars in a tight 5-4 loss in front of 1,034 last night at Southwood Arena.

Surprising Belarus led 3-2 through two periods, but the university squad erupted in the third period, including a short-handed goal by former London Knights captain Joel Scherban of the Lakehead University Thunderwolves.

Belarus had several chances to tie it in the dying seconds but couldn't find the net on point-blank shots.

"A good win. We wanted to establish the forecheck early, we're a team of Ontario players but we wanted to play the traditional Canadian style of hockey with passion and pride," said Lakehead star Jeff Richards, a cousin of Canadian world junior forward Mike Richards.

The 23-year-old Richards sure did that, slamming 18-year-old defenceman Vjateslav Shypila into the end boards three minutes into the game. Shypila collapsed to the ice with a gushing nose bleed and needed help to get to the dressing room. He was taken to hospital by paramedics and with a suspected broken nose. (It was a nice, clean hit, but the results were nasty, LOTS of blood on the ice)

"It's too bad he got hurt but I'm going to finish my checks, that's what it's all about," Richards said. "It's part of the game."

It was an entertaining first night of a two-game series between Belarus and the Ontario team, which will wear Canadian colours at the World University Games in Innsbruck, Austria, Jan. 12-22. (Jerks wouldn't even let us take a look at their "chosen ones" in action?)

Western Mustangs forward Jamie Chamberlain picked up three assists and was his team's player of the game.

The Belarussians didn't use three of their NHL-drafted players, including Montreal Canadiens draft pick Andrei Kastsitsyn. He will join the junior side for the tournament in Grand Forks, N.D.

Canada coach Clarke Singer, who is also bench boss at Western, was impressed with the visitors and thought it was a good test for his team.

"They're skilled, they skate well and they played with some passion," he said. "We had some lulls in our game, especially in the second period, but the times we went hard and forechecked, they couldn't do much."

Mustangs goalie Mike D'Alessandro, who's battling Lakehead's Grant McCune and Trois-Rivieres' Dany D'Allaire for roster spots, played the first 20 minutes and stopped 10 of 11 shots.

McCune allowed two goals on 11 shots in the second while D'Allaire turned aside 11 of 12 in the third.

GAME GLANCE

Canada goals: Shane Nash, Jeff Richards, Murray Magill, Mike Rice, Joel Scherban

Belarus goals: Artem Volkau (two), Alexei Savin, Alexei Efimenko

Next: The same two teams meet again tonight at 8 p.m. at Southwood Arena in the Woodstock District Community Complex.

This was a great, exciting game. I can't wait for tonight's edition. I will also be in attendance for the host committee reception for the teams after the game tonight and hope to get to meet some of the players. Belarus is a FAST, FAST team. I can't wait to see them in ND with all of their players in the lineup. Trust me, they won't be pushovers.

All-stars shade Belarus

RYAN PYETTE, Free Press Sports Reporter Β*

WOODSTOCK -- The Western world hasn't been too kind to the Belarus national junior hockey team this weekend. Led by a stable of stars from the Western Mustangs hockey team, the Ontario university all-stars beat Belarus for the second straight night 5-4 before 984 fans last night at Southwood Arena.

Western forward and Sarnia native Jamie Chamberlain scored twice and Mustangs teammate Mike Rice added a goal and three points for the Canadian side.

Chamberlain, a former Peterborough Pete, also picked up three assists in Canada's 5-4 win on Friday night and Rice managed to score in both games.

"It was great playing another country. My only other international experience was in the Quebec major peewee tournament," said Chamberlain, a second-year Mustang.

"It was a chippy couple of games, a lot of stickwork."

The two-game series served as a preparation tool for both sides. The Belarussians now head to Grand Forks, N.D., for the world junior championship while the university stars will represent Canada at the World University Games Jan. 12-22 in Innsbruck, Austria.

To get his final roster down to 22 players, head coach Clarke Singer had to cut a goaltender and a forward last night. There are seven Western players in camp -- goalie Mike D'Alessandro, defencemen Matt Bannan, Shawn Thompson, forwards Chamberlain, Rice, Craig Kennedy and Ryan Held -- and it was going to be tough for Singer to let go any of them.

"I hope we all get to go together," said the six-foot-two, 220-pound Rice. "It was a big couple of games for us. We have guys from about 10 different teams in the room, guys you play a lot and learn to hate, but these games helped us grow close."

After back-to-back wins over Belarus, it was suggested the older, stronger Ontario university all-stars might hold their own if they were permitted to enter as a team at the world junior tournament.

"I don't think we'd do too well against Canada, Russia or the United States -- Canada's supposed to have the best team they've ever had," Rice said with a grin. "But we beat Belarus twice and could probably do alright against teams like Germany and the Swiss."

Alexei Efimenko, a six-foot-two, 190-pound 19-year-old, scored a hat trick for Belarus and had four goals in the two games.

Belarus dressed a one-time London Knight -- forward Vadim Karagha -- who now plays back home for club team Novopolotsk. Karagha scored seven goals and 13 points for Belarus at the world junior "B" pool championships last year, but didn't score in the two games against the Ontario all-stars.

However, the former Soviet republic didn't dress three of their top forwards who are still with their pro teams: Andrei Kastsitsyn, a Montreal first-rounder who plays with Hamilton in the American Hockey League, Sergei Kukushkin, a Dallas pick who plays with the Indianapolis Ice and Konstantin Zakharov, a St. Louis draftee who plays with Worcester.

That trio will head to Grand Forks in the next few days.

Once they get to North Dakota, Belarus will play two exhibition games against Sweden and Slovakia and open pool play against the Czech Republic in Thief River on Christmas Day.

The Belarussians also face the the Swiss, Russia and United States, but wouldn't play Team Canada until the medal round.

GAME GLANCE

Canada 5, Belarus 4

Canada goals: Mike Rice, Jamie Chamberlain (two), Benoit Martin, Mike Nason

Belarus goals: Alexei Efimenko (three), Alexei Ugarov

Next: Belarus heads to the world junior championships in Grand Forks, North Dakota while the Ontario all-stars play in the World University Games Jan. 12-22 in Innsbruck, Austria.

I think that the attendance was MUCH higher than 984, but I'm not really the one to ask. You see I was busy, and didn't get to watch a good chunk of the game. WHY, you ask? Well, my uncle was kind enough to give me a task that was well worth missing some of the game for.........

I was the security escort for WALTER GRETZKY!

Walter was a "surprise" celebrity guest for the Saturday night game and I was his security guard while he signed autographs for all the fans after the first period. He was only supposed to be signing between periods, but insisted on not stopping until everyone who had lined up to meet him each had gotten an autograph. That didn't happen until 9 minutes to go in the third period. I'll talk more about that later, somewhere else on lgc.com.

Anyhoooooo, the Belarus team is super fast and very skilled. I'm going on record NOW, to say that they should NOT be underestimated at the WJC. They didn't have their "big guns" playing in these games and this was just a tune up for the WJC tournament, so they may were experimenting with their line combos to see who played best with whom. They also made some undisciplined mistakes which lead to bad penalties or easy goals, BUT I'm sure they'd rather make those kinds of mistakes in these games instead of in the WJC when they count for something. All in all, this was a couple of tremendously entertaining games (from what I saw ;) ), and this was an unbelievable experience. I can't wait to see the games beginning on the 25th!

For whoever's going to Grand Forks:

Please have fun.
Please stay warm.
Please don't eat the yellow snow.
Please enjoy the good Scandinavian and (if you're fortunate) German-Russian cuisine that's particular to that part of the country.

But for the love of Gawd, stay the hell away from the Lutefisk.

And if you meet anyone from Garrison, you never heard of me. http://media.TheInsiders.com/Media/Other/229031_couch.GIF

Bergeron and Crosby each get three points as Canada beats Finland 6-0

WINNIPEG (CP) - Patrice Bergeron scored two goals and added an assist while linemate Sidney Crosby had a goal and two assists to lead Canada's junior team to a 6-0 victory over Finland in exhibition play on Monday night.

Kootenay Ice goalie Jeff Glass stopped all 10 shots he faced in front of a capacity crowd of 15,015 at the new MTS Centre. Canada, which has 13 returning players from last year's team, dominated play. They peppered Finnish netminder Joonas Hallikainen with 41 shots.

The world junior hockey tournament begins Dec. 25 in Grand Forks, N.D. and Thief River Falls, Minn.

Mike Richards, Clarke MacArthur and Cam Barker also had goals for Canada, which opens the tournament against Slovakia on Dec. 25.

Crosby opened the scoring on the power play with 25 seconds to play in the first period. Bergeron skated out from the corner and fed a cross-crease pass to Crosby, who chipped it over Hallikainen.

Canada held a 16-3 shots advantage in the opening period and had several quality chances turned away by the Finnish netminder.

Richards, the team captain, made it 2-0 when his centring pass from behind the net went in off the back of Hallikainen's skate at 7:40 of the second period.

Canada then struck with a pair of goals within a span of 1:35.

Crosby raced down the left boards, circled behind the net and set up Bergeron directly in front. Bergerson, who played in the NHL with the Boston Bruins last year, tucked it behind the sprawled goalie.

MacArthur of the WHL's Medicine Hat Tigers made it 4-0 when he banged in his own rebound at 14:42 of the second period.

The game was already out of reach in the third when Crosby came out of the penalty box and set up Bergeron directly in front at 7:49.

Less than four minutes later, the defenceman Barker snapped a wrist shot and beat Hallikainen to round out the scoring.

Canada wore replica vintage jerseys from the 1920 Winnipeg Falcons, who won the country's first Olympic gold medal.

Network To Provide Unprecendented Coverage Of Event In United States

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- ESPN will provide unprecedented coverage of Team USA games in the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, slated for Dec. 25, 2004 - January 4, 2005, at the Ralph Engelstad Arenas in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Thief River Falls, Minnesota.

The slated coverage calls for ESPN2 to televise three of four U.S. games in the preliminary round of the championship. In addition, ESPN2 will televise all U.S. games leading to the gold-medal game. A U.S. appearance in the gold-medal game would be televised by ESPN.

β€œWe’re extremely pleased to have ESPN involved,” said Doug Palazzari, USA Hockey executive director. β€œI know hockey fans in the United States will enjoy the high level of play they’ll see.”

With the games scheduled for the ESPN2 audience, the 2005 World Junior Championship will be broadcast in nearly 85 million homes.

ESPN2 Preliminary Round Schedule (all times are central)

Sat., Dec. 25 USA vs. Russia 7:30 p.m.
Mon., Dec. 27 USA vs. Switzerland 8:00 p.m.
Wed., Dec. 29 USA vs. Belarus 8:30 p.m. (tape-delayed)

Along side ESPN’s coverage of the tournament, U.S.-based World Sport, a high-definition network on Cablevision’s Voom service, will televise all 21 games of the event from Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, which includes all Team USA games. The only live telecast on World Sport will come when Team USA plays Russia on Dec. 25. All other World Sport broadcasts will be on a delayed basis at selected times in January and February.

puck it- here's the schedule- from USA Hockey's website-

I'm really bummed that we don't have TSN here- I remember last year, we did get to see alot of Team Canada because they fed the games on the CI package- I keep hoping they'll do it here-
While I'm down with our boys in the Red, White and Blue- I'd really like to see Canada's team before the big gold medal game.....
I'm beginning to regret cancelling that trip to Grand Forks..... (SoCal kicking self)

A look at the countries competing in the 2005 world junior hockey championship

(CP) - A capsule look at the countries competing in the 2005 world junior hockey championship Dec. 25 to Jan. 4 in Grand Forks, N.D., and Thief River Falls, Minn., (in order of finish in 2004).

United States

Americans have the confidence they can win international hockey tournaments now after breakthrough victories at 2004 world under-20 and 2002 world under-18 championship. And now they are on home ice. The U.S. has eight returning players and the foundation of a good team this year, but how the supporting cast performs will determine whether the Americans win back-to-back titles. Michigan's Al Montoya (New York Rangers), the top goaltender of the 2004 tournament, is back. Defenceman Ryan Suter (Nashville) and prolific scorer Patrick O'Sullivan (Minnesota) wouldn't be playing in their third straight under-20 tournament if not for the NHL lockout. Forward T.J. Hensick is a top college prospect for 2005 NHL draft . . . if one is held.

Canada

Odds-on favourite with up to a dozen returning players plus Boston Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron in the lineup. Canada was 20 minutes away from winning the 2004 tournament in Helsinki last January and then it all fell apart. The talent is still there and head coach Brent Sutter won't stand for lack of effort. Bergeron and 17-year-old Sidney Crosby will be an interesting pairing as linemates. Watch for forward Jeff Carter and defenceman Dion Phaneuf to dish out some punishing checks.

Finland

Finns play a more aggressive North American style than any other European country which will help them on the smaller ice surface. And Finland brings more emotion into their game, especially against Canada, than other European countries. Canada and Finland have finished second and third the last three years. Forwards Lauri Tukonen (Florida), Lauri Korpikoski (New York Rangers) and Petteri Nokelainen (New York Islanders) are the high-end talent and defencemen Teemu Laakso and Riso Korhonen are highly ranked NHL draft prospects.

Czech Republic

The Czechs usually include fewer Canadian Hockey League players in their lineup than neighbour Slovakia, but this year seems to be an exception with as many as 16 who toil in Canadian major junior hockey. That's probably by design as the Czechs want to adapt to the smaller ice surface quickly. The Czech Republic will have a boat load of NHL draft picks, including five first-rounders. If they get top-notch goaltending out of Marek Schwarz, the highest European goaltender taken in this year's NHL draft (St. Louis), they can get to the podium.

Russia

It's the Alexander Ovechkin-Evgeni Malkin show as the NHL general managers and scouts and the public will get to see how the top two picks in this year's NHL draft - Washington and Pittsburgh respectively - are developing. Based on their preliminary roster, the Russians will have five players returning from the squad that finished fifth in Helsinki due to weak goaltending. Quebec Remparts forward Alexander Radulov (Nashville) is expected to be in the lineup. Russia has beaten Canada for gold three of the last six years, but has also finished out of the medals twice during that span.

Slovakia

Slovakia usually brings an equal mix of European and North American club players, but that hybrid hasn't really worked for the Slovaks lately because it costs them in unity and chemistry. The upside, however, is that with so many players accustomed to the smaller ice surface, it won't take them long to get used to it. This team includes several players who won a silver medal at the 2003 under-18 championship behind gold medallist Canada. Slovakia will play a waiting game and block up the middle against top teams because they won't have enough firepower to trade chances. Will have about nine returning players from the team that finished sixth in Helsinki.

Sweden

The Swedes haven't done much at the world junior tournament in recent years, but they surprised a pretty strong Russian side - minus Ovechkin - in the first game of the Four Nations under-20 tournament last month. Have some high NHL draft picks in forwards Robert Nilsson (New York Islanders), who is the son of former NHL player Kent Nilsson, Johannes Salmonsson (Pittsburgh), Carl Soderberg (St. Louis) and defencemen Johan Fransson and Niklas Grossman (Dallas), but Sweden's depth beyond them is a question mark.

Switzerland

After finishing second to Russia at 2001 world under-18 championship, Switzerland was expected to move up the standings at the under-20 level the past couple of years but never did. Against top teams in the world, the Swiss will trap and bottle up the middle in an attempt to eke out a tie or steal a one-goal victory. They'll have five NHL draft picks, including forward Roman Wick (Ottawa) who plays for the Red Deer Rebels. Peter Guggisberg and Gianni Ehrensperger should lead the Swiss offence.

Belarus (Promoted)

The Belarussians keep yo-yoing between the top-tier world championship and the B world championship. It would be nice to see them stick in the top tournament for a second year because while Belarus doesn't have a lot of resources to put behind its hockey programs, it plays hard. Their cause will be helped by a couple of pro players in the lineup in Hamilton Bulldogs forward Andrei Kostitsyn, drafted 10th overall by Montreal in 2003, and Worcester IceCats forward Konstantin Zakharov. Will likely play defensive hockey against top teams, but will have to take some risks in order to avoid relegation.

Germany (Promoted)

Should have about 11 players returning from the team that gained promotion, which should help Germany avoid lopsided losses. It often happens that the promoted teams are weaker because they've graduated the players that got them to the A tournament. Germany is in Canada's pool at this world championship and it also often happens that a promoted team's goaltender has the game of his life against Canada, making the game tighter than it should be. The 2004 tournament was the first time two teams were promoted instead of one and here's hoping the No. 2 promoted side will be better than Ukraine was because it was painful watching that country get outscored 43-1.

I hope this helps fill some of the void left by the lack of coverage you are enduring.

Reality is, outside of NCAA and Pro Sports, National teams (even the "real" National teams, rather than Jrs.) get little coverage and certainly not much general water cooler buzz (outside of Olympic years).

Certainly no Jr National team gets much of anything - even in the more mainstream sports covered by the American media at the NCAA or pro level.

I'm actually impressed that we're getting the games we are. I don't think the Jr National team is getting slighted in any way, in fact getting those games on ESPN is a big deal -- they should be (and probably are) thrilled.

ESPN/ABC covers the Little League World Series, but that's the only "event" I can think of that gets any real coverage (and those aren't "national team" programs anyway).

At least we got some highlight goals from the Bergeron/Crosby duo.

I saw the very end of the game. Really bad timing for me. We didn't start our Christmas at my parents until late afternoon so we weren't done. Didn't set the DVR. Don't have time to watch what I've already taped. Hopefully, I'll have a chance to see the next 2 games. Glad it was such a great start for the US team.

Regardless of the lack of defense, I was amazed by some of Montoya's saves. He really seemed to be aware of the puck. Some saves didn't LOOK spectacular, because he had such good positioning.

Here here! I so enjoyed that game- I'm really liking that Fritsche kid- and I'm sure the Columbus GM was happy to see his prospect lookin' so good. I was also impressed with Casey Borer and that rub out on Mr. Ovechkin (um, by the way, what up with the Terminator like visor shield? ) Also though Montoya did well- but he needs to be like he was last year when he shut everyone down, if the USA wants to regain the title.

I listened to Fan590 in Toronto's broadcast of the CAN vs Slovakia (poor team Slovakia yikes) yes, SoCal, desperate for hockey  that is LIVE and action packed :) - Anyway, The Crosby, Bergeron, Perry line, frightens me. The highlights on TV were good to see, I just so wish that ESPN would show some of Canada's games. I mean what were they showing before the USA game? Uh, "The world's strongest man competition". Come the freak on.

More hockey tommorow night- but don't forget your Lock Monsters are back in action- today at 4:05 @ Providence....... ;)

Oh yeah - Ovechkin's visor is stupid. C'mon. I think anything that that's got reflective/mirror'd coating on the oustide should be prohibited. I don't really get the visors that need tint, but the mirroring on the outside is of no benefit to Mr. Ovechkin (other than the "cool" factor).

I don't understand why a reflective visor should be prohibited. Because you don't like it? Personally, I feel the NHL could use a bit more of the "cool factor", but that's just my opinion. If a reflective visor helps make one more young NHLer wear a visor instead of not wearing one and losing the vision in an eye after taking a puck to the face, I say, bring on more reflective visors!

Great hockey game by the way!

The mirrored visor is a competitive advantage and should be outlawed by the NHL (when it starts back up) under the same provision that outlawed the "thigh board" style of knee protection for goalies.

What about black tape? It could be argued that players tape the blades of their sticks with black tape versus white, because the puck is harder to pick up coming off the black tape. Should black tape be banned as well?

I guess I don't see the huge disadvantage of not seeing someone's eyes, especially if it's a fair "disadvantage" for both sides. Some hockey people are actually discussing making the goals larger to increase scoring, and we have a problem with a mirrored visor? Perhaps mirrored visors will somehow turn the scoring droughts in the NHL into deluges overnight!

By the way, it didn't seem to hamper Montoya from making some big stops on Ovechkin in the 3rd period. Did Ovechkin look that much better than everyone else out there because of this huge advantage? I didn't notice it.

The mirrored visor is a competitive advantage and should be outlawed by the NHL (when it starts back up) under the same provision that outlawed the "thigh board" style of knee protection for goalies.

from what ive read or heard from nhl goalies, you didnt want to see Rocket Richard's eyes. they burned through you like fire.

but the advantage is during a breakaway or penalty shot, when a skater comes in a goalie can look at his eyes to see where hes about to aim.

and E i dont know if stevies is mirrored. just giving an instance when mirrored or really tinted might be accpetable

CHL, I just think it looks foolish and I'm not interested in seeing a ton of them out on the ice. Did the NFL get rid of the really dark tinted visors? I don't see those anymore (though I don't watch a ton of NFL).

Personally I like to see the players faces, eyes included, and totally on a personal preference front would not like to see the trend started.

Yikes - I started something! ;) CHL- I too agree with nccanes, it looks just plain foolish- I like being able to see the guys faces as well, and while I believe I could pick Ovechkin out in a crowd in his street clothes, he's on American TV again for the second time around after the WC of Hockey, and those who may have heard about him but haven't seen him don't get that chance with that contraption on......but I'll allow, that if nobody can pick number 8 for Russia out there doing a better Kovalchuk impression than Kovalchuk, then clearly someone isn't payin' attention :D The NHL does need a 'cool factor' so those who are casual watchers or potential new fans can come on board- however, mirrored visors would be the last on my list of things to up the 'cool factor'. Hockey players are too daggone cute to be hiding anymore than necessary (LOL)........ Visors on the guys yes- for safety's sake, but not this Terminator looking dealio....

E- LaDanaian Tomlinson (sp??) of my hometown SD Chargers still wears a mirrored visor. I would only be knowledgeable about that, due to this little situation called a lockout, which now has hubby re-living the glory years of his beloved hometown Steelers and embracing this rookie quarterback; which he never really gave up, but with our ST's he spent less time obsessing about- and now I sit at home on Sunday's trying in vain to 'get' football.

Now that would be cool! Good one! *L*

Back to the mirrored visors. I can understand the reasoning behind not liking it when we can't see the faces. It would make things very impersonal and would take more away from the game than add to it. Good point! I don't want to see a bunch of "look-a-like" robots skating around out there either.

It *is* against NHL and USA Hockey rules to use black tape on the butt end of a stick, particularly for goalies.

Seriously, this team is a monster squad. As for Ladd, it was good to see him pot one, but he needs to work on his defensive game. I'd also like to see him hitting more too. Hopefully he can work on that before he dons the Sightless Eye.

Totally agree with puck it- I mean did they just pick these guys up off the street to call these games? And if I hear that dude say one more time that 'the international clock counts up' I will strangle him  Surely to gosh with all of these locked out broadcasters, we could have gotten somebody to call these games. I know the analyst does the NESN broadcasts sometimes for the B's but who is the announcer? Never heard or seen this dude ever. If we couldn't get any of our locked out dudes, (uh, John Davidson, John Forslund, Doc Emerick, etc., etc., - not to mention the regular ESPNers like Panger etc) why couldn't they just give us Gord and Pierre from the TSN feed??????? That's what they did for the draft and they used TSN for the Hockey Hall of Fame inductions; These two dudes sound so ill prepared, and that announcer continues to talk to the audience like we have no clue what the WJ Hockey Championships are- nothing like talking down to your audience. UGH. On top of that, the dudes don't appear to know the names of any of the opposition and they're even dicey on our own guys "Casey Boyer standing tall out there against Ovechkin" um its Borer, Casey BORER. UGHHHHH. I'm sorry, I just HAD to vent.

Sloppy, Sloppy, Sloppy game for Team USA- so many complete breakdowns in front of Montoya- who still needs to get sharper if he's gonna contend with Bergeron, Crosby et al; I'm liking the fire in Danny Fritsche -and who is this Phil Kessel kid?? I like that speed.....

Well, a win is a win, they don't get points for style- just hope our guys can tighten up and get stronger as we go along.

Poor team Sweden. Didn't have a prayer against Canada. didn't like hearing on the radio broadcast all that chippiness and stickwork that appeared to be going on..... to listen to the radio stuff in Toronto and read the papers in Canada, you'd think they'd be less nervous up there- ;) Canada is still the loaded team and the team to beat.

Not trying to put it all on Montoya, but he does have to be the Montoya of last years WJC's and he's not been that yet...... I have seen why he was drafted high, but mostly that was last year at Michigan-I've seen a couple of games this year where he has looked alternately very sharp/horrible. Another easy win for Canada

Canada cruised to a 9-0 win over Germany and a berth in the playoff round at the world junior hockey championship Tuesday.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (CP) -- The Canadian junior hockey team downed a starstruck German team 9-0 Thursday at the world junior hockey championship to secure a berth in the playoff round.

Canada (3-0) can finish no worse than third in Pool B and the top three teams advance to the playoff round.

Germany is one of two teams here that won promotion to this year's tournament from the second-tier world championship last year.

The Canadian team didn't feel it could afford to take it easy against the newcomers, however, as it is trying to sharpen its game and stay strong for the tougher matches to come.

And Canada might need all the goals it can get when it concludes the round robin Thursday against Finland, if there happens to be a three-way tie for first place in the B pool.

"You never want to go into a game thinking you're going to win," defenceman Shawn Belle said. "You want to keep your foot on the throttle for the entire tournament just in case a situation like that does happen.

"We're going to try and avoid that by getting the win against Finland."

The top team in each pool bypasses the quarter-finals and goes to the semifinals, which is a major physical and psychological advantage in the tournament.

Germany dropped to 0-3, while Slovakia, Sweden and Finland were 1-1. Sweden faces Slovakia and Sweden takes on Finland on Wednesday night.

In the tournament's only other game Tuesday, Russia beat Belarus 7-2 in Pool A.

Anthony Stewart of the Kingston Frontenacs broke out of a scoring slump with his first two goals of the tournament and Sidney Crosby of the Rimouski Oceanic also scored twice.

Crosby, 17, leads the tournament in goals with six and five of them are power-play goals.

Andrew Ladd and Ryan Getzlaf of the Calgary Hitmen, Clarke MacArthur and Cam Barker of the Medicine Hat Tigers and Red Deer Rebels forward Colin Fraser also scored in front of 8,404 at the Ralph Engelstad Arena. Rebels' defenceman Dion Phaneuf had three assists and Nigel Dawes of the Kootenay Ice and Patrice Bergeron of the Providence Bruins each had two.

Rejean Beauchemin of the Prince Albert Raiders earned the shutout, stopping 17 shots in his first start of the tournament. Canada outshot Germany 52-17.

Canadian captain Michael Richards was involved in a collision near the boards late in the first period and left the ice with some difficulty, appearing to have injured his right leg, and head coach Brent Sutter sent him to the showers.

"He's going to be fine," Sutter said. "It was more of a precautionary situation.

"I thought it was best for him to go get iced down so he's ready for our next game."

Germany started the game trying to bottle Canada up in the neutral zone and forechecking the Canadians hard in their own end, but the German defence quickly softened under Canada's superior speed and passing and became particularly vulnerable around the goalcrease. German starter Youri Ziffzer was replaced by Thomas Greiss after Canada's fifth goal, scored by Getzlaf, at 6:32 of the second period.

"It's a thrill for many of the players on the German team to play the Canadian junior national team," said German assistant coach Uwe Krupp, a former NHL player and Stanley Cup winner with the Colorado Avalanche. "For some of them, the highlight of their hockey career."

"For us, playing against Canada is sort of like a David-and-Goliath idea. Our goal is to maintain our position in the A pool. Canada's goals are very different."

Crosby and Barker scored 47 seconds apart late in the first period for the fastest two power-play goals scored by a Canadian junior team, giving Canada a 4-0 lead heading into the second period.

Crosby's fifth power-play goal of the tournament tied the Canadian junior team's record held by Eric Daze, who scored five times with the man-advantage in 1995.

In the playoff round, the second- and third-place teams in each pool cross over in the quarter-finals with No. 2 seed facing the other pool's No. 3 seed in the quarter-finals.

For teams with identical records at the conclusion of the round robin, the tiebreaker is the result of their game against each other, but in the event of a three-way tie for first, the tiebreaker goes to goal differential.

Canada beat Slovakia 7-3 and Sweden 8-1 to open the tournament.

Crosby watch -- Scored power-play goal and first even-strength goal of the tournament and leads all scorers with six goals in three games.

CP Players of the Game : Dion Phaneuf, Canada. Set up three goals and didn't let up on any shift. Thomas Greiss, Germany; Goaltender didn't give up and gamely tried to hold off Canada's charge after taking over for Ziffzer, stopping 18 of 22 shots.

Notes -- Forward Jeremy Colliton (knee) was scratched from Canada's lineup Tuesday after playing just over one period in Monday's win over Sweden ... The two previous fastest power-play goals scored by a Canadian team were 49 seconds apart by Patrice Brisebois and Mike Needham in 1990.

OK, 3 games, and they outscore their opponents 26-4. Oh--my--GAWH!

I think the announcers are from the fox pittsburgh affiliate. THANk GOODNESS NOT OURS.

dear god no wonder why pittsburgh's got no fan base. the jackasses on tv scare them away

puck it & ap- surely you guys aren't serious ? Hall of Fame Broadcaster Mike Lange and former Penguin & 2 time Cup winner Bob Errey call the Pens games- Lange would be a COMPLETE and total upgrade from those two knuckleheads......... although Errey is subdued version of Tripp (doesn't talk about food nearly as much) and I think John Forslund wouldn't be embarassing us like those two dopes are.

Um, Listened to the Team Canada Game (sounds like our boy A. Ladd has a little more get up and go- and playing harder like is his norm :D ) I hope our boys from team USA are ready....... they are just on a tear. Granted the German team and Team Sweden weren't much competition, but clearly , they're head and shoulders above all of their competitors- although they better watch out for Team Finland.

I think it'll be a great matchup between us and Canada if that's how the gold medal game shakes out- I don't think we need to worry about Montoya. He's not been at his best, so he can only go up.

The d man, casey borer, he's ours too rights? From Hedican's old college?

Yep, he's ours..... and yep, he's from St. Cloud State....

This tourney is very enjoyable - on so many levels. NHL who???

For those of us relying on ESPN2's coverage, tonight's game is a an hour tape delayed, so maybe anyone watching an online box score, live in Canada, or listening live over the 'net - just be mindful about that.

Thanks! :)

Yes, I believe the game starts at 8:38 Eastern Time and the ESPN2 broadcast starts at 9:30. They are showing a NCAA Basketball game at 7:30, so that's why they've pushed the WJ broadcast back. (Most conferences have a standard night that ESPN/ESPN2 airs their games.)

Tape delayed- I tried to ignore that fact, but of course, we can't..... Just typical of all things related to hockey here in the U.S. - we're the afterthought, but I guess we should be glad that we're going to get to see it at all........

Well, uh, Aaryn hit the nail on the proverbial head-

I shouldn't say I'm 'stunned' with this result, but I'll say this- I don't think those boys were prepared to play. And I'm questioning the coaching (don't ask yet, I'm still trying to figure it out) and can someone tell me why Robbie Schremp is being used so sparingly? yeah, I know we had alot of penalities, but he didn't seem to be out there much. They looked like they had zip for maybe a few minutes in the first- and of course down the stretch when they saw the potential for a disaster- Belarus had not won A GAME for craps sake. And no disrespect, but come on. Very disappointing. And why are we not going to get to see the USA vs Czech today???? I mean, what's the point of saying you're showing all of the preliminary games and then cut out this one? I'm sure it was part of the'deal' but come on.

Schneider did not impress me last night in net- that's too bad too, because I've seen several BC games on NESN and CSTV and he looked verrrry good. I don't think the decision by Sanderlin was a good one (to take Montoya out and bring in C. Schneider) but I know where he was going with that. Montoya is an enigma - I'm not sure what I'm thinking about that boy...... the D looks very suspect- Ryan Suter was drafted 7th overall in Staal's year? Not sure what's going on with him either. Very concerned about Chris Bourque and him leaving the game- people- we have issues......

Well, not much time to figure out what the heck went wrong- these boys need a huge bounce back game, let's hope they can.

Meanwhile, Canada plans Finland. I'll go on record as saying that could be interesting- and I don't think our friends to the North will take their opponents lightly. ;)

Now, I only watched the first period...but it looked eerily reminiscent of 'Canes hockey being played. Totally outplay the opposing team, and end up giving up a shortie on a defensive mistake and the entire game goes to pot. The opposition gets outplayed, and gets a few lucky goals, and that's the end of the game due to a reluctance to score.

It was good to see hockey on tv, though.

well the first period was actually decent hockey. be glad you stopped there Turby, as the 2nd period was a Disaster. the third wasn't much better.. but by then, it was fairly easy for Belarus. They always had 4 guys waiting on their own blue line to stop a rush. We couldn't do much.

the US power play went to crap... that was the big factor, imo. Belarus got destroyed 3x so far, all because they average about 25 PIMs per game. If we could've clicked on a few of those, would've been a different game.

I found that 'announcement' funny- College Sports TV is a really good channel, and I think ESPN wanted some of that action- lots o' college hockey on their too. It's all about the $$$ for those in Bristol, CT.

Jeff Carter is being named player of the game for Team Canada- this one is in the books....... They're playing the Canadian national anthem- just the music, but you can hear all the fans singing - they gave their team a great standing O when the game finished. Hockey Mad indeed....

I'd just like to remind everyone of the show that the Houston Cougars put on in the 1983 NCAA Tournament semifinal. Then they lost the Championship to NC State.

Then again, State was led by one of the world's greatest ever defensive basketball coaches.

Canada is scoring like it's their birthright and NC State managed 10 points in the first half against St. John's. What does that mean?

Uh...panic.

I heard about that ESPNU a few months ago along with ESPN2 HD. ESPN2 HD premiers in January, and I think the college network premiers in March. I was thinking that was an odd time since college sports are winding down at that time. What are they going to show over the summer I wonder? I remember when ESPN first started all they showed were reruns of sports that happened weeks before. THey also used really bug letters on screen! :)

Oh god, I remember when the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network was more than just sports--they showed music videos (back in the days when the music video was so new that few if any artists made them) and movies, too!

Americans lose again, long road ahead
Canadian Press
12/30/2004
GRAND FORKS, N.D.(CP-AP) - The United States will have to take the long way around to defend its world junior hockey championship.
Vladislav Koutsky stopped 39 shots to lead the Czech Republic to a 3-1 win over the Americans on Thursday in Pool A action.< Koutsky said the heavy workload kept him sharp in the contest.
"I think it helped out a bit," Koutsky said through an interpreter. "You know when a goalie faces a lot of shots it helps him stay in the zone."
The loss was the second straight for the Americans, who finished third in their pool. That means the U.S. will play Sweden in the quarter-finals.
"He definitely played really well," American Drew Stafford said of Koutsky. "We had a lot of opportunities to tie the game in the third period.
"We can't dwell on this, we have to keep plugging away."
A win would've given the Americans top spot and a berth in the semifinals. Instead, that benefit goes to Russia, which beat Switzerland 6-1 to finish first in Pool A with a 3-1 record.
In Pool B action, Sweden beat Slovakia 3-0 to finish second behind unbeaten Canada (4-0).
Rostislav Olesz had two goals for the Czechs. Lukas Kaspar had the other.
Dan Fritsche replied for the Americans, who dropped a 5-3 decision to Belarus on Wednesday night.
Alexander Ovechkin led Russia's attack with two goals and one assist. Dimitri Vorobiev, Dmitri Pestunov, Alexander Galimov and Georgi Misharin also scored.
Marco Kaser had the lone goal for Switzerland.
Russia scored two goals in the final three minutes of the second period. The Swiss (1-3) will play Germany on Saturday in the consolation game.

oh well.... sketchy goal-tending will catch up to you every time.

a 2nd ESPN HD channel? oh man, it's almost time to switch to Voom. just waiting on them to release their HD DVR to see how bad it's going to be. (Dish just dropped theirs from $999 down to $549. not cheap, but certainly getting closer)

having network HD is nice (OTA), since most big games are on broadcast anyway... but, sure would be nice to have ESPN, Discovery, etc..
for those in the HD world that haven't heard of Voom, I'd suggest checking them out. www.voom.com

back OT--
another loss... Ugh. I don't think this will end well. the way the last 2 games have gone, I'd be surprised if we got past Sweden tomorrow.

oh well.... sketchy goal-tending will catch up to you every time.

This time it wasn't necessarily the case. The third goal was an empty netter.Montoya had around a 93% save percentage. The US couldn't score once in the first period. Managed to get one in the second. In the third, the Czechs had to switch goaltenders with 3.5 minutes to spare. We pulled Montoya. So - with 6 skaters and an unwarmed up goaltender, we still couldn't manage to score even a single goal. The open netter didn't occur until the last 20 seconds or so of the game.

Sad, sad, sad.

Well we play Sweden tonight. We need to be consistent on the back check, and clear the front of the damn net. Once we get an offensive spark, and we paly smart on defense, I think we can win.

For some reason I thought this wasn't televised and it popped up on the ESPN 2 schedule - 8:30p.

Well, the USA is without one of their sparkplugs!

12/31/2004

U.S. forward Chris Bourque, son of Hockey Hall of Fame defenceman Ray Bourque, has been knocked out of the world junior championship with a knee injury.

The 18-year-old from Boston suffered the injury in a 5-3 loss to Belarus during the round robin. He was a second-round draft pick of the Washington Capitals this year. Bourque had a goal and an assist in three games

i wish they would jsut let Panger interview Gretzky all game. then i wouldnt have to here the bozos. Gretzky had nice words about Kessel, and Panger said something about Kessel and Crosby being in the nhl together and Gretzky said they will compete like La Fleur and Dionne, and he and Mario. HIGH praise for him.

2-2 ;)
