Yes, music is good. I happen to like all kinds of music really. I really don't care what genre it is, if it sounds good, then I like it (most of the time).

I'm partial to live music. I loved how we went through the fad of live recordings. Snatched up a bunch of them.

Any type of music sounds better live, especially good jazz!!

Anybody going to see Pearl Jam or Chilli Peppers?

I'd have to agree there is nothing better than good Live music. I like pretty much anything but country. I'm rather partial to Punk at the moment. It is some good stuff.

A little bit of everything...mostly I just put on the jazz Internet channel. I really don't know too many artists...Although if you consider Etta James jazz, she's one I am huge on.

Same here. I can listen to anyone from U2 to the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Beethoven...though I try to stick to mellow-er classic rock ala Pink Floyd. But no rap. *shudder*

I listen to pretty much everything as well... usually on the mellower side... trippy/bluegrassy/jammy... (dead, phish, leftover salmon, string cheese, and and all bluegrass)

but I do love me some old-school (early to mid 80's) rap now and then. :D
I also need to rage now and then... and have plenty of AIC, NIN, RATM and the like for those occasions. http://wemissjerry.org/smiles/rocker.gif

Im very open minded when it comes to music, however, when Im in my car, I ALWAYS listen to my music, no radio, no rock, no rap, no country.

But I really enjoy other types of music, I mean all types, as long as its cool. Latin. rap, hip-hop, soul, r&b, rock, even teenie bopper rock on occasion, but I will only spend money on a CD if its my kind of music.

who doesn't like music? :D i like mostly rock and some rap but can deal with other genres now and again. i've noticed in the last few years i've been buying less and less new music (because i haven't found that many new bands i like), and just the new stuff that my favorites put out.

Same here. I can listen to anyone from U2 to
another U2 fan! rock on. i follow them like a mouse following cheese. or maybe the way bad luck followed the Canes this year.

Uh...no. They would be "New Punk"...totally laughable, IMO. (Not saying the music is bad...just saying it's not Punk...Punk ain't about the image and New Punk is.)

Name some punk bands and I'll see if I've seen them live or not.
Weirdos, Avengers, Stiff Little Fingers, Sham 69, X-Ray Spex, Germs, DOA, Jawbreaker, Guttermouth...no NY punk in here, I can do that too if you want.

Really? Cool stuff! My dad was going through random CDs a few years ago (he has like 800 or so), and asked me if I wanted any... I gave them a listen and liked it a lot... actually its kinda nice to go to sleep to, lol... I know that doesn't sound flattering, but it's true!

Come on SHC don't hate, educate ;) You have to help the young punks find the good stuff.

Hockeypunk716 I have an assignment for you. Go here www.fatwreck.com listen to what you can(I hope you have broadband ;))
let us know what you think. SHC and I will have a new assignment for you tomorrow ;)

Good Charlotte would definitely be in the “Trying way to hard” category. Blink did make pop punk in vogue and I think it will last longer than I would like. That being said,
I do like Blink, and Simple Plan. I actually paid money to see Simple Plan. (I was really there just to be at a punk show and Madcap and Gob were to be there which justified it in my mind.) Simple plan actually put on a good show, and played a Bad Religion song to boot. I felt bad because I booed them when they got on stage. They are a much better pop-punk act than Sum and Charlotte. We left the 2000 warped show when those two acts hit the stage.

I can say I have seen none of the bands you mentioned. I’ll see Jawbreaker this summer at the warped tour but that is it. DOA I would love to see but as far as I know they haven’t been near here in a bit if at all.

I would have to say my favorite punk band would be those New Jersey moochers, The Bouncing Souls. That should pretty much tell you where I draw my punk lines. Seen those fellas 3 times so far and I’m looking forward to the fourth. Saw the Souls, The Casualties, Arson, and The Disasters last month. That was a very solid show.

That was a very solid show.

hey Rkbrasse, I actually have a bouncing souls cd, and If I am not mistaken, its the last punk cd ive listened to start to finish, its pretty good. Back in the day when I listened to punk I liked Rancid, Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys, Op Ivy, and Bad Religion...Im really thinking hard now and those are the ones I remember.

I like me some Bad Religion also. Very good stuff. They finish a close second to Bouncing Souls for me.

Well Ill tell ya, I started listening to punk rock when i was aroun 13 or 14, aminly influenced by my older brother and my older friends. After ihad picked up several Rancid cd's I heard about Operation Ivy and their "ska" tyle punk rock.... I was hooked. I thought "How could it get any better than this?" after several other "punk ska" bands (Slapstick, Less than Jake, MU330.....and many more who I cannot remmeber right now) I started listening to neo-traditional ska, or 3rd wave ska as it came to be known, ( the Toasters, the Scofflaws, Pietasters, Skinnerbox) which in turn led me to the Skatalites.

The skatalites are one of the most impressive bands in the worlds history. In the sixteen months they were together, they paved the way towards a musical genre that can be directly associated with their homeland, Jamaica. They recorded thousands of songs, no lie, not just original material, but they backed every one of Jamacias singers, from Jackie Opel, to Doreen Schaffer to a young Bob Marley. After the incarceration and tragic death of master trombonist Don Drummond, the remaining Skatalites split into two groups and went on to create the distinct rythms forever associated with reggae and their homeland.

While many of the original Skatalites have now passed, the remaining still tour to this day(their in Europe now) as well as release original, new material.

Now punk rock gives the listener an agrresive me-against-the-world feeling, I get that same feeling listening to some of the more heavy/darker tunes from the skatalites. Other tracks are so beutiful they give me goosebumps (I swear to this day, even after hunderds of listenings). All i ask is if anyone gets a chance to listen to the skatalites, please do, and listen to the solos, thats where all the magic is, in the solos.

i saw U2 last year
You lucky, lucky person. Where'd you see them?

My top three bands: U2, Matchbox Twenty, and Pink Floyd, for anyone who's inerested.

whee! more U2 love! :D StJacquesRulz25 and i happened to be at the same show, how cool is that? did you see any shows on the last tour, Turby? i managed to get to a few...cough5cough -- and it still wasn't enough!

my top 3 artists: U2, r.e.m. (i know there's some r.e.m.-haters on here, oh well), and tori amos. :spin:

Come on girl! Don't you know it! :) U2 is my number one as well ( thanks for the unbelievable pictures hyena :) ) ~ I've been watching them for ten or twelve years ~ they're very special fellas.

I also dig Simple Minds, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Clash ( kisses to my Joe :( ), Billy Idol, Cyndi Lauper, etc. I'm a product of a very UK upbringing. I like a little of everything for the most part. But this new punk stuff is wretched. :P They're trying to be... well, I can't even tell you what it is theyre going for really. Punk rock was a sociological experiment, meant to free up certain repressed individuals at the time. It was meant to live and die, not be sustained on life support like it is. yuck. The whole premise behind punk rock was being open to change, shaking things up. So, it's only natural that punk should have transitioned out eventually in favor of something equally new and vital. Some of the most impressive things in the world are just flashes of light, and then theyre gone.

ANYWAY! all of that to say, i'm old school I guess. I also like Etta James, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and most motown.

wow, I bet that was a hot and sweaty packed out show! The Ritz is so cramped. I dated a guy who was a bouncer there ~ I went to see him one night when the Squirrel Nut Zippers were playing, and the humanity was hangin' out of every possible spot. *ugh* sorry to go off-topic but I hate the Ritz... ya figure if someone is gonna charge you $6 for a can of ice house (the best you can get there), than they should be able to turn the air on for a lil while. Only place worse than the Ritz (IMO) is teh Brewery..

Luckily the music I like plays at the Pour House (http://www.the-pour-house.com), which has a great atmosphere, free pool most nights, and cheap excellent draught beer.. ahhhhh

no kidding :P The Brewery is dreadful too, just from all the smoke. I know I'm a little sensitive to that kind of stuff, but the cigarette smoke can be unbearable sometimes. It really drives me crazy too, because I like the talent they attract, but i can't stand in the room for more than 10 minutes without feeling like my head is going to explode. :p Same goes for Aura, downtown. Luckily, the ex-bf let me use the side door where the bouncers were, otherwise I would've been wigging out a lot more. I can't imagine how irritating it must've been to pay for a ticket and then end up crammed in like a sardine.

It's almost all jam bands.. with a few other bands thrown in.. those of us into the jamband scene, all seem to like bluegrass, jazz and psychedelia as well. I love it, but most people really dislike a 30 minute song LOL.

Ugh. I SO can feel my age now (in spirit mostly I suppose). I just am not up for the whole club scene anymore. We wanted to go see Mike Watt at the Cat's Cradle this week but didn't partly because it is finals week for me and partly because we are too old to deal with the crowd. We like the old fogey shows now at places like The Carolina Theater, The Arts Center or The Neighborhood Theater in Charlotte. We saw Springsteen in Greensboro but that's the old fogey show of course, and we went to The Tractor and The Crocodile when we were in Seattle in December just to honor the history....but we pretty much hated it. Too smokey, too sweaty, too many people just there to "hook-up" and forgetting the music....yes, my friends....we are TOO old.....but it's still not too loud! ;) :p

Okay, back on topic now... what sort of music do they play at the Pour House? I'm always up for something new... :)

It's almost all jam bands.. with a few other bands thrown in.. those of us into the jamband scene, all seem to like bluegrass, jazz and psychedelia as well. I love it, but most people really dislike a 30 minute song LOL.

awesome :) Sometimes you just need a good steady jam to set the mood ~ sometimes I find that I need a tune that carries a theme for awhile, instead of songs switching out every 4 or 5 minutes.

I've been playing a little bluegrass with a group in town ~ that and ceilidh ( pub crawling ) music. Fun stuff!

I've been playing classical viola for the last 15 years, but the fiddle thing is recent. There are a few people in my group who are unbelievable ~ one of the lady fiddlers has a cd out, if anyone would like to hear some of it. She totally rocks out. I wish I was as proficient as she is. But a party is ALWAYS a good idea ~ any excuse for a good Irish/ Scottish hoolie! Chickie can bring her 24 cans of beer. :vamp:

I just got King Crimson's latest album, The Power To Believe at Barnes and Noble at the Triangle Town Center almost an hour ago, and WOW...is it an AWESOME album. Everything, from the very Discipline-ish instrumentals ("The Power To Believe Parts I-IV", "Level Five", "Elektrik", and "Dangerous Curves".) to the songs with vocals (The breathtaking "Eyes Wide Open", the Faith No More-ish "Facts of Life", and the hilariously rocking nu-metal parody, "Happy With What You Have To Be Happy With", which is not only funny lyrically, but also regarding the fact that lead singer and guitarist Adrian Belew has done some work with Nine Inch Nails.) is incredible. I wholeheartedly recommend this to those who love Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, early-mid 80's King Crimson, King Crimson in general, and/or progressive rock. IMO, the reviews I've read that said PTB deserves a Grammy for best album of 2003 are easily dead-on...not to mention that this is IMO also easily King Crimson's best album since Three of a Perfect Pair and definitely among the best progressive albums in the last decade. Again, WOW.

another U2 fan! rock on. i follow them like a mouse following cheese. or maybe the way bad luck followed the Canes this year.

Late reading this thread....

Do you know the only time I've "seen" U2? It was in 1987 in Baton Rouge, LA. I used to work at the Assembly Center (LSU's arena) selling Tshirts for the concerts that came thru town. Great money for a college student (and even after I graduated). It was Thanksgiving and we skipped dinner to be able to work that concert. The doors opened 2 hours before the show and we worked non-stop selling stuff. A girl fainted at the table, just conked out and no one even noticed. Normally we were able to count our money, turn it in and then take turns watching the show. We had so much cash, it took us virtually the entire concert to count it and bundle it - over $15,000 in cash on us. I thought "people have been killed for less than 15k in cash".

Oh and U2 set a record for us making money. We made about $300 each selling Tshirts. GREAT college pocket money. That was a great gig. I even got hit on by a ZZ Top Roadie once, lol.

I've never gotten to another U2 show, but I'd LOVE to.

Hyena, I've read your U2 page and I admit I have a few questions, but I'll save those for a later date (and a pm) I think ;)

You know what one of the biggest regrets of my life is? When "Zooropa" came out I was in college at UNCA. The student center there organized a bus trip to go see them in Atlanta. Well, not enough people signed up to go and the afternoon of the concert they were giving away the tickets and the bus ride down and back just to fill it up....AND WE DIDN'T GO!!! How stupid was that? I mean, I didn't really like that album but HELLO! It was still U2!! What an idiot I was.

Whooo I listen to a bunch of everything too. Lately in my CD player was Shania Twain "Up", and the freakin best CD ever (next to Back in Black") AC/DC's "Blow up Your Video". Hmm... Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, mah Raleigh boy...although I've never seen a single American Idol or any other reality TV show episodeI also have been known to listen to Lil Jon and the Eastside Boys (love that crunk!) and yes, I must agree with Jessica...I also consider rap music. Hmmm just bought the Steve Miller Band's greatest hits CD and no CD collection is ever complete without the Prince anthology. But like every other Michigander I ADORE Bob Seger, D12, Kid Rock....you get the gist. But my MOST recent was Third Eye Blind's "Out of the Vein".

Also don't forget, people, you can never EVER go wrong with some Outkast "Speakerboxx/The Love Below" in your CD rotation device. :D

Didn't know what anyone else was into, but I've been digging on underground stuff for some time, and http://www.epitonic.com is the place to go for that. All manner of ambient, techno, progressive, house electronica, rock. You name it. I've never liked mainstream radio, and I like it even less now since the DJs feel the need to beat every freakin' song to gee-golly death. I've run across some good new bands like Say Hi to Your Mom, and some stand-by good'uns like the Dropkick Murphys ("Barroom Hero" is terrific).

Favorites are always the Clash, U2, the Furs and Billy Idol, of course. :D I've never left the 80's and have no intention of leaving now.

I'm currently on a Tool/A Perfect Circle kick. I don't know what it is about them that I like so much--if it's the introspective lyrics of much of their songs or Maynard James Keenan's vocals, but I just can't get enough of either group (and with luck I'll be going to see APC at the Vault next month).

I've been listening to quite a bit of Pink lately. Her new album "Try This" Is EXCELLENT. Seriously. I don't know a single song on that album that I cant stand or dont want to listen to.

Another GREAT album is...and yes it's a bit old school. "In Utero" by of course...Nirvana...is great. I have had the CD in my collection since forever and just recently listened to it, after I got my SPIN magazine with Kurt Cobain on the cover. Just great stuff. Weren't the most sunny lyrics and everything but it's always good to hear it from the other side. Some of the lyrics are so enigmatic but this man was great. Great, great album. I find that I'm really starting to get into Classic Rock. I've sort of been turned off of the newer stuff that's out there...Top 40 stations like G105 don't do it for me anymore. (Read: I HATE RAP)
Really the only new bands that I can get into are Matchbox Twenty and Coldplay. In fact, Matchbox Twenty may be my favorite band. They progress with every album. I can listen to every CD the whole way through and never find a song I don't like, and they're the only band I can say that about. And Coldplay is the modern-day Pink Floyd. They're awesome.
Every once in a while a good new song will come out that I like, but for the most part it's old stuff that I like...Pink Floyd, Bob Seger, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, Procol Harum, and U2 all have some great stuff out there.

And I dig early 80s Canadian Progressive Rock, like Rush. :D

OK, so first off I totally love Archers of Loaf and am so freakin' happy someone else knows who they are!!! All the Nation's Airports is such an awesome album!!

Secondly, I have to love them because they were all friends of our's in Asheville where the drummer (Mark Price), the main front man (Eric Bachman) grew up. Mr SHC went to high school with Eric.

And thirdly, Mark is my celebrity claim to fame.....I sorta went out with him a bit in college (OK, more like made out in my dorm room on a few occasions but same thing in college :D )!

Eric Bachman is an absolute creative genius. He's like a god to kids who grew up in Asheville for all the bands he was a part of. Everyone (cool) knows who Alistair Tail was in Asheville.

Bah! They've only gotten better since their first. Part of it has to do with Rob Thomas' development as a singer. There is quite a difference between the first album and their latest as far as voice quality.
I do think for the most part that their latest releases may not have shown the greatness of their latest albums...but I dare you to say that "Bright Lights," from the latest CD, proves their downfall from the greatness of the mid-90s...
All 3 of their CDs have been awesome. The 2nd CD was definately inferior to the other two, but they've still been awesome. They're a real band in every sense of the word, especially considering alot of the crap out there.

Whatever floats your boat, I suppose.

1. "We Built This City" Starship

3. "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" Wang Chung

6. "The Heart of Rock & Roll," Huey Lewis and the News

These songs are guilty pleasures for me...I know I probably shouldn't like them, but I can't help it. It also doesn't help that they have such freaky videos (especially "Everybody Have Fun Tonight"...what's up with that video?). We ought to have a music video thread...I have so much material for such a thing after all I've seen on VH1 Classic, it's not funny. I will go ahead and say this: The video for Huey Lewis and News' "Doin' It (All For My Baby)" has got to have the longest freakin' intro EVER. Though, Janet Jackson's "Control" is up there too...

7. "Don't Worry Be Happy," Bobby McFerrin

10. "Ebony and Ivory," Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder

These are songs that I really don't like but I don't mind either. Though, I think "Ebony and Ivory" is a great example for Dave Barry's theory that aliens from planet Twinkie invaded Paul McCartney's head sometime after the Beatles' breakup.

4. "Rollin'," Limp Bizkit

9. "American Life," Madonna

Thankfully, I've never heard these songs, so I can't comment on them. Not surprised that Limp Bizkit made the list...and am glad they did.

2. "Achy Breaky Heart," Billy Ray Cyrus

5. "Ice Ice Baby," Vanilla Ice

8. "Party All the Time," Eddie Murphy

So, these are the songs on the list I genuinely hate. I can't decide if "Achy Breaky Heart" or "Party All the Time" should be numero uno. I'd probably give "Achy Breaky" the nod based on these supposed lyrics (as mentioned in Dave Barry's Book of Bad Songs)...

You can tell my lips
Or you can tell my hips
That you're going to dump me if you can
But don't tell my liver
It never would forgive her
It might blow up and circumcise this man!

Ewwwww...

"Party All the Time" is just as bad...and I think that's where Eddie Murphy's going downhill began. Why VH1 Classic plays that as often as they do is beyond me...

Alright, I gotta get this out...I hope the MusicChoice Classic Rock station is not becoming like every other classic rock station and playing certain artists/groups twice or THREE times an hour. I can't help but be a tiny bit worried after hearing Van Hagar's "Best of Both Worlds", and then two or three songs later, Sammy Hagar's "I'll Fall In Love Again".

moonstomper
04-21-2004, 10:55 AM
"Party all the time" is soo bad. The video is insane. Eddie Murphey is dancing amongst the clouds and rainbows, looking alot like his Stevie Wonder impersonation from SNL, and just when you think things couldnt possibly get any fruitier, here comes Micheal Jackson

Going back to my MusicChoice Classic Rock gripe...this is getting weirder. They haven't played anything twice by Ozzy Osbourne in the last couple of hours. But the song they are playing by him is "See You On The Other Side" off of Ozzmosis, from 1995.

This thread would begin — and end — with "Hello" by Lionel Ritchie.

Funny you should ask. We tried to, but traffic was the worst i've ever seen. We left airport blvd. at 7:10 and arrived at the RBC at 9:00 pm. They obviously cannot handle a sellout anymore. I won't even get into how awful Wake Avenue was. It was ridiculous. We parked over by the practice field, then walked by many empty spots. Prince ended at 10:30, so we missed a good portion. What I did see was fantastic though.

Amazingly, VH1 Classic has never played the complete version of "Hello". I say "amazingly" because as much as they LOVE Lionel on that channel AND play just about every other video in its entirety, you'd think they would give "Hello" (thanks to Seinfeld, I now go "Helloooooo!" every time I hear that song or see a reference to it) the star treatment.

I honestly can't decide who, of the people VH1 Classic shows too much love *IMO*, I can't stand more...Lionel or Peter Frampton. Both have songs that should have made the aforementioned top ten worst songs...my picks being for Lionel "Ballerina Girl" (though, "Penny Lover" runs close too), and for Frampton "Do You Feel Like I Do". While I'm at it, another song I feel should have made the list, if not the top ten, then the overall top fifty is "Closer To Home" by Grand Funk Railroad. The whole song, musically AND lyrically, is horrid, but what really pushes it over the top is the five-plus minute climax where Mark Farner belts out as miserably as possible "I'M GETTING CLOSER TO MY HOME!!". Hearing that (along with "Do You Feel Like I Do") every other day on MusicChoice certainly has me feeling mighty sick.

Anyway, I would have loved to see Prince AND Metallica...it's not often that two awesome musical acts like them are in NC on the same night.

Peter Frampton should make that list.

Others:

A Horse With No Name - America (you'd think if he was alone in the desert, he could at least give the horse a name.)

MacArthur Park - I have no idea who does it. Some band can't name a horse, but another one names a cake and then sings about it?

Mandy (or anything else by) Barry Manilow.

Anything by No Doubt.

From the why did they waste the DAT department--Mary J. Blige and all the others who sound like that. The world would be a much better place if that stuff was blown up.
