View Full Version : Why can't I find a Whalers jersey?

Since it seems retro jerseys are the "in" thing in some places, I figured I'd pick up an old Whalers jersey to wear to games sometimes (OK, I'm also a history buff and it seemed like a neat thing to do). Problem is, I can't find one for sale. Anywhere! I've checked a number of retailers and found a lot of vintage jerseys for many defunct/moved teams (Nordiques, Jets, etc), but no Whalers stuff anywhere. Ebay does have a few, but they're really expensive. Anyone have any ideas why I'm having so much trouble? Is there some rule forbidding the use of the Whalers logo for a certain period after the franchise moved to Raleigh?

I think it's a licensing issue.

When Uncle Pete moved the Whale from Hartford, he gave everything associated with the franchise--team colors, logos, the old banners, and pretty much everything else--over to the Hartford Development Corporation. It's up to them to grant a license for retro jerseys and stuff, and I get the feeling that it won't happen anytime soon.

Anybody see those posters where they show the jerseys over time? For the Hurricanes one it shows the Hartford ones first, then ends with the Canes ones. Pretty sweet.

I wish they would make WhalerCane jerseys, one half from each team... I saw two people on TV in the playoffs last year with those...

They have those on Ebay, as well. They go pretty cheap, too.

That's very unfortunate. I know that some would just as soon join manglement in ignoring or refusing to acknowledge every last bit of this franchise's history, but I don't think that's right.

Oh well. :(

Gene, you're talking to the guy who never gets picked for anything. The only thing I've won in my entire life was a gallon of anti-freeze that I got a school function in 2nd grade.

Section128Crazy and I have one hanging in our Hurricanes decorated bedroom. We got it on Ebay and it's really good quality and was relatively inexpensive (less than $30) I'm going to need to post pictures of our bedroom one of these days.
