That is resigns and not re-signs.
Corson's days with Leafs look to be done
TSN.ca Staff
4/15/2003
It looks as though Shayne Corson's days as a Toronto Maple Leaf may be over.
Sources told TSN that Corson, who was a healthy scratch last night for Game 3 against Philadelphia, met with Head Coach and General Manager Pat Quinn yesterday and a decision was reached during that meeting that Corson would no longer play or practice with the club. Corson was not at Leaf practice today.
A Maple Leafs spokespersnon told TSN that Corson "resigned".
Whether that decision remains final remains to be seen. Corson is clearly unhappy with his diminished role on the Maple Leafs this season. Corson's contract expires at the end of this season, but there is a club option.
It's believed, howewver, that the Maple Leafs are not interested in exercising that option.
Corson was in the final year of a three-year contract that paid him $2.45 million US this season.
He appeared in only 46 games and had 15 points including a career-low seven goals, and 49 penalty minutes. Injuries twice took him out of the lineup, and he missed the final five games due to illness. He was also a healthy scratch for seven straight games in February. Corson said at the time he had never been a healthy scratch in his NHL career.
In 1,139 regular-season games in 18 seasons with Montreal, Edmonton, St. Louis, Montreal again, and Toronto, the six-foot-one native of Barrie, Ont., has 268 goals, 415 assists and 2,328 penalty minutes. In 133 playoff games, he had 38 goals, 48 assists and 277 penalty minutes.
He played in NHL all-star games in 1990, 1994 and 1998.

I didn't realize that Corson was an all-star back then... Knew he was a tough guy, but not that gifted of a scorer.

It's really rude of him to be doing this to his team. Very unclassy. But Quinn really should have done something with some of the current players on the Leafs after making all the trade day acquisitions. There's just not room for everyone on the playing roster! I'm sure Corson was told that though. Very wrong for him to do this.

Really doesn't surprise me much.. he's been *****ing and threatening since he was a healthy scratch for the first time in his career back in February.
He did shoot himself in the foot though, and man is Toronto mad.. check out the Toronto Sun (http://www.canoe.ca/TorontoSports/home.html) if you want more detail about it than anyone should want ;) The top 3 stories are about him.

That's what I was thinking. I remember the rumblings back then....and that was before all the trade-day acquisitions. I had the impression that he and Quinn weren't getting along then so I'm not at all surprised now....especially after seeing him scratched again the other night.

This is an interesting story. Corson was in the pre-game warm-up on Monday, and then was told he was scratched and may not play again at all in the playoffs. It has been reported that him and Pat Quinn then had an argument and he left the team, which I don't believe to be true since his close ties to the Toronto area, and having played in Montreal and Edmonton, he knows what kind of publicity this type of move can cause.
This morning I heard on Toronto TV that it is reported that Corson has had some sort of stomach/abdominal problem (or someone in his family has it) that has bothered him, and he has decided to take care of it rather than be a destraction to the team, and is even considering retirement! There was also a report from Sportsnet that 1/3 of the Leafs dressing room liked him, while the other 2/3 have said "good riddance", and wondered why he wasn't moved at the trade deadline after a "play me or trade me" tirade in the media (sound familiar?).
The bottom line here is, there is more to this story than anyone knows, and is eerily reminiscent to a situation around our team, but without the playoffs. All I can say is....... Stay tuned.

Someone posted on another board that Corson had ongoing mental health problems for quite a while. In this person's opinion Pat Quinn had allowed the problems to continue and not tried to deal with it in any way and it led to this. I don't know anything about any of it, but the poster is generally accurate in his/her information on other topics.
If that's the case, it is a shame that no one in the organization dealt with accelerating problems. Leaving the team like that is a poor decision. I do have some sympathy if it is a true clinical mental health issue.

I don't doubt that.
Seriously, though, not to make light of it. I hope it's nothing that serious. I don't like the guy but still I wouldn't wish that on him.

Well according to the Toronto paper, his abdominal problems are due to "colitis". I remember reading about that last year. His mental health problems are panic/anxiety attacks. Those can be extremely debilitating to those who suffer them. I am sure the two conditions probably exacerbate each other.

That is sad if it is true..I can imagine it would be hard to be an athlete, especially a physical sport like hockey with colitis...I have known people personally with this and it is very debilitating much of the time..pair that with anxiety and panic attacks and that must be a bad time.. sorry for him..
