On Monday night, a hockey team clad in red and white took to the ice at the RBC Center preparing for the start of its season. But it wasn't the Carolina Hurricanes.

Rather, it was the N.C. State club ice hockey team, holding one of its final practices before Friday night's season-opener against Maryland-Baltimore County.

The team has been practicing since mid-August, when it reported a week before classes to participate in training camp.

The camp provided the opportunity to test players' physical limits, while giving the incoming freshmen a chance to fit in with the rest of the team, said junior Nick Olson, club president and alternate captain.

"That first week, there's a lot going on -- spending time in local gyms, getting the training back into regular season intensity," Olson said. "Some of the freshmen stay with the veterans and coach holds a barbecue -- we do things like that to try and get the team to mold together early on."

Thirteen new players have joined the roster this year. Coach Mike Young, in his ninth season behind the bench for the Wolfpack, said he is excited about the depth and the potential that the incoming class brings to Raleigh.

"We are carrying 27 students on the roster this year," Young said. "With school work, jobs, injuries you need a good-sized bench for success. This year, the team will be very young -- this nucleus of players will be together for many years."

Dan Masiulis is one of the incoming freshmen, and will play on the wing alongside team captain Mike Kuzmuk and center Zack Smith on the first line. Entrusted with such an important position, Masiulis said he hopes to be more than just a role player in his first year with the team.

"Hopefully I'll be able to put a lot of goals in the net," Masiulis said. "Where I'm at, I need to play more of a leadership role. I'm really looking forward to playing with the older guys this year. All of us have been playing for a long time, and we have a lot of knowledge we'll be able to put to use. We should do very well."

Recruiting players like Masiulis has been paramount to State's success. Many players first contact the coaches of various schools they are interested in, Young said.

"Most kids send out blanket emails to the schools they're looking at," Young said. "I correspond and try to figure out what they're looking for in a program and in a university. With the success of our program, I get a lot of emails about kids wanting to play for us."

Last year, the Pack played in the University Hockey League, a more prestigious league reserved for only more prominent college club programs. Competing against more established club teams such as Pittsburgh, Penn State and Liberty, State finished 14-15-1.

"The competition level in the UHL is comparable to that of Division III," Kuzmuk said. "If we can continue to compete like we have been, trying to become an NCAA program is absolutely a long-term goal for us."

Making nationals is something Olson said the team wants to achieve this year.

"We really want to make it to nationals," Olson said. "We've been so close in the past -- I think this year we can get there."

Factors that could bode well for the Pack are its overall team speed and toughness, Young said.

"The speed of our team in conjunction with our toughness makes us a solid bunch," Young said. "Speed by itself is great, but speed and toughness makes your program one that other teams would rather not play against."

Another ace in State's pocket is senior goaltender Joe Burley. Young extols his skill between the pipes as some of the best he's seen.

"[Burley] will definitely be a key to our season," Young said. "He handles the puck better than any other goalie out of the 600-plus teams in the ACHA [American Collegiate Hockey Association]."

The team's 30-game schedule is highlighted by an October trip to the Midwest to take on Central Michigan, a program that has made nationals in nine of the previous ten seasons.

"It will be a great measuring stick," Kuzmuk said. "By playing a team like that, we just continue to get our name out there. Hopefully we can have more games like this one in the future."

Burley is a great player, and one of the best skating goalies I've seen in a long time.

In general they play mostly at RecZone, but their practices are all over the place and some of them at RBC. (Their website says they have practices Monday 8-9:30 at RBC)

It's worth pointing out that ice rental at the RBC is cheaper than the RecZone or Ice House.
