Figured we could use one of these.

Unfortunate it has to start with the Pack being absolutely destroyed by St. John's last night. 27-10 at the half??? That's like the football team! And Levi Watkins and Jordan Collins didn't even score. Not one point.

Bad, bad game.

Fluke shooting night, but the Pack didn't seem too interested in running the offense, either.

Levi Watkins is TERRIBLE. Every now and then he has a really good night and gets 8-10 points, but I'd rather see Brackman start out of position than suffer with Levi for long stretches of time.

*sigh*

Did anyone else see UNC simply smash Maryland? That was total destruction! UNC is VERY good this year. (duh)

And Duke is only up 7 on Temple. That would be QUITE an upset.

edit: down to 5 points, 2 minutes left

As long as John Chaney is coach of Temple, (which, I suspect, won't be for too much longer after this season) they'll have the potential to give *really* good teams fits. Because of that, first and second round NCAA brackets featuring the Owls can be tricky picks.

Yeah, and it helps that refs have been pulling some ridiculous crap. Double fouls? I've never heard of such a thing outside of the NBA until today...

I've read at a few places how Skip Prosser has wanted a more NBA-like atmosphere in Winston-Salem. Well, I hope the guy is happy...he certainly has that NBA-likeness in the officiating AND his players' antics (Strickland trying to b*tchslap/elbow McCants and Danelius kneeing Felton for examples) anyway.

The first double foul came from the fact that they whistled McCants for holding and then Strickland threw the forearm and they couldn't let that slide...so they called both.

The tix I got are in 311 (I was at the window and I could see the tickets, I should've jumped out of line...I'm an idiot. Then again, if I went to Chapel Hill, I'd never get to sit on the floor). $10 says there are more left and I'll grab a good one as soon as the window opens tomorrow.

If it isn't the threes that fall against the Heels, it's the free throws. But to have the second best number of FTs in a NCAA game EVER? Un. Real.

Can someone tell me when the last time State won a b-ball game when the winning margin was 3 points or less. It seems like forever.

I've never been a Fire Herb person at ALL, but if you can't win games in the final minute EVER, then you really have a big problem.

(My "entertainment" in the car last night was 90 minutes of mostly hockey talk with Morgan Patrick, the NCState-VaTech game, followed by the end of the Duke/Miami game....and then I STILL wasn't home).

Started out with so much promise, too.

I don't think alot of people realize how much the attrition rate of guards has affected the play of the team...Our point guard has gout and arthritis, Julius has had a sprained ankle, and Bennerman and Atsur have both had the flu. When you only have 1 or 2 guards playing at 100%, you can't do too well. (Thank goodness for Gavin Grant...he's playing better than any other guard right now. He's going to be absolutely awesome.) I think now we're finally starting to see the guards get back to normal (even if the game against VT was...handed to the Hokies, we saw a good team beat #8 Georgia Tech)
As far as forwards go...Brackman is the best thing we have going for us. He'll go to the NBA, count on it. He's the next Gugliotta. He is a great defensive player, has a great mind for the game, he can dribble, and he can shoot! Give him 3 years and 20 lbs of muscle, and he'll be dominant. Cedric Simmons is going to be very good as well, and he is finally learnig the offense after struggling with it for a little bit. Evtimov is fundamentally sound, though he can make some boneheaded plays at times...but he's a good guy to have in.
The two guys who really dissapoint me are Collins and Watkins. We went to the coach's meeting after the Duke game and someone asked a question about Watkins...the coach said "He can't play defense, he can't dribble, he can't rebound, he can't shoot..." so he's pretty much good for nothing. Collins is better than that, but not much.

So I think the future is very bright...Imagine next year with a lineup of Bethel-Bennerman-Grant-Evtimov-Brackman. That will be a great team.

Turby, I'll accept what you've written, but how do you lose that game after being up virtually the WHOLE game? I realize peopel are not 100%, but can't you win in the final minutes after battling the whole game?

Seriously, I want to look up the record for State to see when the last time (or how often) the actually WIN a close game.

Okay, I looked over the last 2 seasons and State has one ZERO games that were decided by 3 or less points. They have lost 8 games by less 3 or less points.

If you look at the margin of victory being 5 points, they actually won more than they've lost.

Probably last year E.. we won some "squeakers" in the ACC.. I will try to find a score..

I hope you are right Turby.... we are getting spread thin.. I heard that Roach was coming back.. I hope he can..at least he can give the team a spark with his enthusiasm... If Brackman is another "Gugs", I will love him.. Gugs played with so much heart. I remember once him scoring 30+ against the Holes and we beat them when they were ranked and we were in the toilet... big time!! :nanner:

Oh I'm not blaming it all on the flu/gaut...but it certainly doesn't help.

That said, I'm not 100% confident that giving it to Julius so he can make a 1-handed fadeaway to win the game is the best strategy...they know you're going to go for him, try to find Brackman or Simmons down low, and if they can't do it, kick it out to Grant or Bennerman on the wing. You want to go with the 'surest thing,' and considering what we know about Julius's jump shot, that ain't it. But I don't know if that was Julius being desperate and taking things into his own hands, or Herb's playcalling.
Herb was the ACC Coach of the Year last year for a reason, and I think with the right people he can be very successful...he just has to have the right people, and hasn't found them yet. Might never. But...clutch situations that decide the game, would you rather have Herb or someone else? Herb's teams have a long history of folding in pressure situations. I don't know why.

It's alot like the 'Canes...the potential is there, the team is not.

Bethel still looks *terrible*. I saw him walking across campus the other day, and it looks like he's lost a lot more than the 18 pounds they claim.

Jules has really gone back and forth on his decision-making this year. Against Duke, he got into "do it all" mode and lost the ball three straight times and swung the momentum to Duke. Against GT, he realized it wasn't his game and shifted to a different role and the team did well. Because he was playing so well in his "traditional" role, he got that feeling that the last shot belonged to him, and he took it even when there were better options. With that said, Cedric Simmons is not ready. At all. The book on the two big freshmen all along was that Brackman would have sudden impact and Simmons would have to develop, but I think Brackman has taken over the whole show. I'm not disillusioned with Herb as some are, but losses like these do take their toll.

The one thing I do know is that Doak Field is going to be PACKED when Brackman makes his first start on the mound.

And again, State can't win at the end. Yes, I know they are sick/injured/etc. - but missing those free throws....

I didn't even watch the game, I checked the score on Yahoo and saw they were down by 4 with 2 and change to go - then "watched" the end of the game on the Yahoo GameChannel thing - and sure enough they couldn't do it -- again.

I hope they get their players healthy before it's too late...

As a side note, the #1 Duke women come to the friendly confines of Reynolds Coliseum to play the #25 NC State women on Sunday. BE THERE!

At least the women are winning.. I saw somewhere that Temple is going to be added to the conference too.. I really don't like expansion.. oh well..

The men's team is terrible.. how on earth can they lose to Florida State at home??? Me thinks the basement will be reserved for NCSU once again..

This is from the WRAL page... makes me wanna throw up..

N.C. State Falls To Florida State

POSTED: 7:12 am EST January 27, 2005

RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina State continued its up and down season with a home loss to Florida State.

The Seminoles earned their first Atlantic Coast Conference road win in nearly four years.

F.S.U.'s Von Wafer scored 23 points Wednesday night in beating the Wolfpack 70-64.

Julius Hodge scored 14 points for N.C. State.

The Wolfpack has beaten Georgia Tech and won at Maryland, but lost to league newcomers Virginia Tech and Miami.

Florida State controlled the first half, shooting 54 percent and holding the Wolfpack to 8-for-26 shooting.

N.C. State didn't help itself from the free-throw line in this game. The Wolfpack hit 13 of 23 free throws. If I was Herbie, those guys wouldn't leave the free throw line today for any reason..

No no no, I didn't mean that stupid nit-picky thing about how you and I aren't on the team so we shouldn't say "we" when we mean the team. I refer to NC State athletic teams as "we" with no qualms. What I meant was that because of expansion, we only play Duke once each regular season, so no Cameron game this year.

As I recall, Craig was fined for that. And one of Wake's players recently got reprimanded because he pulled his jersey over his head during a free throw out of frustration. Taunting has no place in athletics.. no matter who does it.

Certainly doesn't surprise me about the whole McCants thing. He has been bush league ever since he got to UNC. From saying if Doh is coach then I quit, to being sent to the locker room by Roy, to this latest gesture. Just proves that a leopard can't change his spots. Winning helps chemistry and covers up a lot of crap that a somewhat more lackluster record would not. See Philadelphia Eagles(ie TO)

P.S. Does UNC this year resemble some of the Georgetown teams of the mid eighties or is it just me?

and the gesture was uncalled for in any sport. Craig Adams got fine (i cant rember if he got suspended) but you cant fine a player in NCAA considering they make nothing. so he has to be suspended, preferably the 22nd

I think now is a good time to point out that McCants pulled the throat slash in response to a foul being called on him by an official, not in response to an NC State player.

Seriously though, 24 points in Chapel Hill with one missing starter and three freshmen in a seven-man rotation...it could've been a whole lot worse.

State kept Carolina from running away in the first half despite never once running the offense the right way (running the clock, lots of passing, good shot, backdoor in lieu of open shot), and that's as encouraging as anything, despite the fact that I would def. classify State's overall play as "bad."

McCants comment about the incident

On his throat-slashing gesture: "There's nothing I can do on the court except for smile and frown and look like I'm not smacking my teammates hands. Everybody makes a big deal out of everything that I do. So, I live with it. I made a mistake. Coach told me that it was something that's not appropriate for us as a team and I made a mistake in doing it. Like I said, anything that I do on the court people are going to see and make a big deal about it. I don't know why, but it happens. It wasn't directed at N.C. State it was actually directed at one of my friends in the stands."

He's a kid for crying out loud. I understand that Carolina fans are few and far between on this board but lets not blow things out of proportion. If Hodge had done it I would feel the same way.

This is totally blown out of proportion because it was McCants and UNC. Of course he shouldn't have done it. He was reprimanded for it but there are lots worse things that could have happened. It wasn't directed at a player, a coach or a ref. I suppose maybe his first born son would suffice to rectify this horrible error in judgement. Worse things are said on the court between players all the time. This happened to have been caught on camera.

The Sprewell incident was much more aggravated than this. Comparing an NBA team to a college team is irrelevant. He was wrong - I admit that. He was reprimanded - thats been noted too. I"m not sure what else you want. I'm will not agree he needs to be suspended. My opinion on that will not change. I do feel that the NC State fans here are often very gleeful in trying to find fault with anything UNC does and yes Puck It, I do feel the reaction is in part because it is UNC. I don't think I saw a similar discussion occuring when a Wake Forest exhibited similar behavior recently.

For me- I said what I wanted to say. I do think you have blown this out of proportion. I do think it was wrong for McCants to demonstrate that behavior but I also feel theres a certain amount of glee in criticizing him for it.

And, if anyone is keeping score, State loses another game decided by 3 or less. Maybe that can be a goal next year.

I think Herb time-outed them to death in those last 2 minutes. Did the Pack actually score after all those time outs? I think sometimes you can time out a team to death in those final minutes.

Crowd looked pretty pitiful for a Sat night ACC game. And when Herb begged them to stand, only the students did.

At least I got to see a glimpse of the RBC center.

How do you lose to Virginia? Why even have to be in the position to make a buzzer-beater in the last seconds...to Virginia? At the coach's little Q&A session after the game he was very frank in saying that alot of the problem is vocal leadership on the team...that nobody can or will stand up, not even Julius. It's really pretty pitiful, this team is. I'm starting to wonder now if State will even make the NIT. All I can do now is look forward to next year...with a talented lineup including more mature Simmons, Grant, and Brackman...and no Hodge, who seems to be a cancer on the team.

I think Herb might need to go...I'm not convinced that he isn't too smart of a coach...his systems on offense are so complex that they take a good shooter and take his natural rhythm away. Maybe we can get Nate McMillan from the Seattle Supersonics...he would do a great job.

And when Herb begged them to stand, only the students did.

Please note that the tickets on the sidelines go to the Student Wolfpack Club, the most worthless bunch of unenthusiastic "fans" in the history of the planet.

Actually during the time I was talking about the sideline students DID stand up (though it's sad they had to be told), but I was talking about the regular fans. I would have thought a 1 point game in the final minute or so would have folks on their feet anyway.

As far as Hodge, well he WAS the MVP last year (ACC). Hodge has never struck me as obnoxious player. I think he feels the burden of leading this team and this year and since the team is struggling, he feels the pressure. I think it was AG on 850 that talked about on paper Hodge looks to be having another good year (he's 3rd in the ACC in scoring behind Reddick and Diaz).

As it turns out, Hodge may have taken the difficult road in returning for his Sr. year, but you gotta respect the choice, imo.

Oh you have to credit his decision to come back and play...so many college basketball players (and High-Schoolers for that matter) think only about money. It's refreshing to see a guy like Jules go all 4 years.

But I think he gets frustrated because he sees his NBA dream slipping away. This year has not been good for him...he has no jump shot, now he can't even shoot free-throws, and he isn't big enough to be the type of guard that can drive down the lane and take it in himself (at least in the NBA). Last year, I think teams would have taken a chance on him. I'm not convinced of the same this year.

Maybe he can go play in Australia with Scooter Sherrill. :spin:

When Virginia brought the ball down, I saw the first guy shoot and I was screaming BOX HIM OUT and get the rebound.. and what the fuc* did they do, they just stood there and let Virginia get the follow-up to win.... That was the first one of their games that I have pretty much watched in it's entirey this season. I usually get so frustrated that I yell and scare my dogs... when I saw Julius on the news, he looked just like I felt.

What is wrong with Eptimov?? Last night he just stood around..

This is where the light blue takes over...Duke is not as good or as deep as in previous years, and UNC is the best team in the country right now. Roy Williams has done a terrific job.

Anyone know why the game is on at 9 tonight? And why it's blacked-out on ESPN?

And for the record, world poverty is horrible.

84-79 UNC. That's my guess. If someone like Redick gets in foul trouble, Duke's sunk. But I don't think it'll be a blowout by any means... duh...

Carolina is trying to run that up-tempo game to try to wear down Duke, but they're forcing it...you can run up and down the court fast as much as you want, but if you keep throwing sloppy passes right into the hands of JJ Redick or Sean Dockery, you can't score and you can't win. Despite the score, Duke really looks like the better team right now, even though they probably aren't. Roy needs to sit his team down and talk to them, get them to focus on their fundamentals. If UNC can ever get their heads straight they'll be the best team in 20 years...why they can't is beyond me.

Hey E.. they won a close one! ;)

Finally! Figures that all the other times I was sure they'd win and didn't. Tonight I predicted the choke and they didn't.

Hopefully a sign of better things to come for the Pack.

Did anyone see the ESPN thing on student section taunting that featured an interview with JJ Reddick? I don't like Duke, and I love seeing Reddick have a bad night, but some of the stuff directed at him is just plain wrong. And to think he said there were things there was no way he could repeat on TV.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but the student section antics seems so contrived these days. Sure sometimes things are clever, but the whole make fun of the athletes, bad taste just don't impress me much. Yeah, I'm old.

I think the problem with student sections lately is that they try to tread the line between the hilarious lack of taste it takes to make something memorable to sports folks and being inoffensive to the general public. While I know that the Crazies are derived from the Reynolds Rowdies, I think that on the whole most student sections lack the smarts and organization to pull off the brilliantly base things the Duke students threw at opposing players and coaches in the eighties and early nineties. If you make Jimmy V smile while pelting him with cheap sneakers, you must be doing something right.

If you're going to be tasteless, you better make it really funny, like the Cameron Crazies coating the floor in pizza boxes after Lorenzo Charles stole pizzas, or showering Herman Veal with panties and the "DID YOU BUY HER FLOWERS" sign after he was involved in a sex scandal. The things the Twerps said to Redick (as much as I hate him), don't involve a wink like the pizza boxes do, and that's what makes them so stupid. There's no wit involved, just simple name-calling.

We're the Red and White from State and we know we are the best.
A hand behind our back, we can take on the rest.
Come over the hill Caroline, Devils and Deacs stand in line,
The red and white from N. C. State. Go State!

There is a mistake in the third line! :p

That's true, Mona; it's "Come O'er the hill Caroline."

Seriously though, McCants not playing could ruin the hopes of many a heckler tonight. (McCants Read)

Pack by 4 sounds about right.

GO PACK!!!!!

as someone with no vested interested in the game, other than being a fan of the sport (and conference).... I'll say, State's run has been nice... and needed, big time.
but, beating UNC may prove to be where the line ends for hopes of an NCAA tourny bid. jmo.

should be a good game though

This season is shaping up EXACTLY like 1983. The one thing that's missing is the final push of confidence-building, the regular season win over UNC-CH.

By the way, today's Daily Tar Hell features many a nice piece on McCants' jail time, possession of STDs, and his subsequent ban from the new adult shop on Chick-Fil-A Franklin Street by Warden Huckleberry Hound.

Oh those are fantastic. McCants is such an easy target, too. With his head problems, he'll do great in the NBA!

I'm glad we have strong minded, fundamentally strong Europeans like Evtimov and Atsur...not a hint of ego on the team anymore. It's just a shame they can't play basketball like Felton and Jawad Williams.

And it's official...carolinablue.com says McCants will be out tonight. There might be a hint of a premonition of a chance of a close game tonight!

Oh, and Carolina might win tonight...but we'll see how UNC fans feel next year after McCants, Felton, May, Jawad Williams, and Marvin Williams go to the NBA, leaving them with someone like Damion Grant starting.

50+ years of raw venom leaves nothing but, I'm afraid.

Wait...no...I'm proud of that.

It's probably a good thing that McCants isn't making the trip, because I'd probably spit on his suit.

Probably.

For real.

I'll look around for it, but this reminds me of a quote that was overheard by a UNC-CH parent and his son, a boy around 12-13. Something along the lines of "talk trash to the Duke fans all you want and they'll talk back, but an NC State fan will fight you to the death."

Last week, Gary Williams almost took a run at one of the kids in the student section, and the intensity for UNC-CH is twice as high (we really REALLY hate Maryland, too).

It's hard to describe if you haven't been a part of it.

NC State will always be the scrappy sewer rat, be it on the court or in the stands. Even when the team was undefeated and on top of the world, it was on the shoulders of a lanky farmboy, a too-short point guard, and a walking miracle with an afro, led by a scrappy old man who fed on the stubborn nature of other coaches.

Ramble ramble.

Is this going to be televised on "regular" cable TV? Or do I need the ESPN Full Court package?
