ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Baseball's Angels have a new name, and it's a mouthful: The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
The switch, which will be challenged in court by the city of Anaheim, is intended to help the team market itself to more of Southern California, attract more advertising sponsors and broadcast revenue, the team said Monday.
"We believe that the appeal in the marketplace will be broader," Angels spokesman Tim Mead said.
The city of Anaheim will file a lawsuit to block the name change and hopes to obtain a temporary restraining order in place this week, city spokesman John Nicoletti said.
Anaheim officials believe the change violates the terms of the team's 33-year lease with the city.
"It's geographically confusing and absurd," Nicoletti said. "No other professional sports franchise that I know of has two different cities in its names."
When the franchise began in 1961, owned by singing cowboy Gene Autry, it was the Los Angeles Angels. The team became the California Angels when it moved to Anaheim in 1966. In 1997, when the team was controlled by The Walt Disney Co., the franchise was renamed the Anaheim Angels.
Arte Moreno bought the team in 2003, one year after it won the World Series, and he wanted to change the name.
The Angels drew 3,375,677 last season, the third-highest total in baseball behind the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers.

right up there with That said, we do apologize to our millions of fans and the thousands of people that earn their livelihood depending on our game. It is truly unfortunate that we have to go through this. I assure you that no one is more unhappy about this situation than I am.

*Paging the Wilkes Barre-Scranton Penguins and Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks*
(Those are real names, btw. The Skyhawks were an NFL farm team.)

I can agree with some of that--but Wilkes-Barre-Scranton are really close together. I've been through there and really didn't know when I left one and entered the next. Plus together, that's the only way they landed an AHL team--although booming now, they're not that big alone.

^ Got it. I didn't know if it was a situation like Raleigh and Durham, far enough apart for us to get mad when people lump us together but close enough that people from large metro areas wouldn't bat an eyelash at them being the same place.

yeah---we get pi$$ed, but from whom I talked to (a small population sample--no way scientific :D ), WB-S people really don't mind the distinction. I mean really, would you say "I'm from Scranton, PA" :D
But boy, do they have a nice setup for their arena--right next to the Interstate, a Sheetz a stone's thrown away (our Capital Blvd one is opening soon!!), and a new facility. Nice area up there!
Also--just curious on how Eastern PA pronounces Wilkes-Barre Guy...
Us Western PAers call it Wilkes-Berry.

I guess that's similar.
I've heard people down here (mostly hockey players) say Barr (rhymes with air)

I think Mr. NCCanes (from Reading) says "Wilkes-Barra" or something similar, but I know I always say "Berry" (or "Barry") and he'll repeat it and say something slightly different. I'll ask him.

Wilkes-Barra
Barra means bar, in Portuguese, so, if he WERE Brazilian, he would talking "Wilkes-Bar".

well I am from southern CAL and I don't like it.
It's a dog on Anaheim population that has supported this team. L.A. and
Anaheim are not like Raleigh Durham at all. And there is huge rivalry between these areas.
I was there over Christmas and people are pissed.
Just like there is big rivalry between the Ducks and the Kings.
The idea is crazy.
