Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Benicio Del Toro, Jessica Alba, Alexis Bledel, Elijah Wood, Rosario Dawson, Josh Hartnett, Brittany Murphy... you can't ask for a whole lot more...
Based on Frank Miller's comics. It should be illegal how pumped I am about his movie. It's unhealty.

Also, if you haven't read the Sin City books, you can pick up each story in a big graphic novel for less than $20 each. I don't think it'll ruin the movie or anything, they're just brilliant pieces of work.

Just FYI, if you do pick up the graphic novels, the best order to read them in (to fully know the characters) would be:
Sin City
A Dame to Kill For
Booze, Broads and Bullets
The Big Fat Kill
That Yellow *******
Hell and Back
Family Values

On a similar note, in 2006 the film "300" is set to come out, based on Frank Miller's graphic novel about the fabled Battle of Thermopylae, "where the King of Sparta led his army against the advancing Persians; the battle is said to have inspired all of Greece to band together against the Persians, and helped usher in the world's first democracy."
It's going to be directed by Zack Snyder, who did the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake, and he's had his eyes on it for a while.

Dave Matthews is going to star in the book to movie release of Because of Winn Dixie...cute little book, but it is going to be like Holes--not as good on the big screen as in your imagination as you read it.
Maxim (thanks for subscription I'm still enjoying MeanGene!) reviewed that and the one Gavin Rossdale of Bush will be in. I guess Gavin will be satan or something in a movie and they ripped poor Dave.

We saw Meet the Fockers, too. Great movie! Maybe not as good as the first one, but it was chock-full 'o' good laughs.
And we rented The Bourne Supremacy for tonight...I've been told that it's better than the original.

Anybody see constantine this weekend?
It has one of the funniest scens I've ever seen in awhile.....
Slight spoiler (no plot or ending give aways though)
Constantine (Keanu Reeves) is going up to heaven, and as he starts to ascend into heaven turns and looks back at the devil and shoots him the finger![ :D

We saw Hotel Rwanda last night-- can't recommend that enough...I liked it better than Million Dollar Baby and I really liked Million Dollar Baby. Today we are going to see Sideways and can't wait to see that as reviews for that has been terrific...
One of the good things about no hockey (blasphemy!) is that I am now freed up enough to pursue other forms of entertainment that I have neglected due to seven months of hockey games one to two nights per week...I'm seeing movies, going to museums and concerts, taking day trips/long weekends, spending time with friends, eating out...

We really liked Sideways a lot. I was so happy to see Paul Giamatti win the Independent Spirit award for best actor since the Oscars screwed him, IMO. Also, it was great to see Garden State get best screenplay since I absolutely loved that movie.
I really wanted to get to see Hotel Rwanda and Million Dollar Baby both before now (especially since I just heard a huge spoiler on MDB Firday night and once the Oscars are over they'll both probably leave here) but we just haven't had a chance.

The third or fourth time, it's the sound editing in Eternal Sunshine that really gets you. If you're a fan of the visual look of the movie, including the table/room that makes Joel look small while his mom and Clem are normal-size (it's a perception trick, not a CGI effect), I HIGHLY recommend looking for "The Works of Director Michel Gondry" on DVD (it's one double-side disc, not a bank-breaker), which contains a bunch of music videos, short films and the like, all with the same creativity and visual vitality that was on display in ESotSM.

Anybody see constantine this weekend?
It's really wierd--I kinda want to go see it, but the part of me that's read the Hellblazer comics is like "NO! BAD!" because:
1) It's not in London.
2) It gleefully ignores the bulk of the Hellblazer storyline (which is more than a simple "heaven v. hell" kind of thing) AND half the characters that make Hellblazer interesting.
AND
3) John Constantine was created with Sting in mind (though since Sting is a bit old to play him in the movie, James Marsters would have worked well), and seeing Keanu Reeves play him is kinda
I think that when it comes out on DVD I'll be to the point where I'll be able to just watch it as a movie rather than want to constantly nitpick where it completely buggers up the comic. :D

So, with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, we apparently weren't supposed to figure out the timeline of the movie before the end? Meaning, we weren't supposed to make sense of that first scene until later in the movie? I wasn't sure if it was intended to be something revealed in the end or not. I figured it out in the first 15 minutes or so (without even trying) but Mr SHC didn't so I wasn't sure what the intention was. I figured out Sixth Sense, though, so I'm just like that I guess. But it didn't affect my enjoyment of the movie at all.
I think if it would have ended with the very end of his memory erasure it would have been absolutely perfect (though a bit cheesey, maybe). To me, the tying up of the loose ends was a distraction more than something I required.

Is anyone else as good as SHC at figuring out movies? Seriously, I wish I had that kind of analytical thinking, especially on the fly - within two hours, during a movie.

Nah, I hate it. I still loved Sixth Sense but it really ruined the experience. And, like I said, I wasn't even trying to figure out ESotSM. I just can't stop myself. I got it from my dad....but at least I know not to blurt it out for everyone else to hear. It comes in really handy in pharmacy, though!

in Sunshine the whole thing is probably supposed to come together when Carrey's character (forget his name) and clementine are sitting on the steps singing the song. I had suspicsions of how it was supposed to turn out, but that was the definitive point.

The Sin City film is frickin' gorgeous beyond belief, the visual technique for the movie works so well that even Tarantino scrapped his normal process shot and fell in line with the production-standard green screen in the scene he directed. I've seen bits and pieces of the movie and it is almost 100% shot-for-shot what's in the panels of the book. Stunning.

Did anyone else see Mystic River when it was out? Did anyone else think it was total sh*t? Based on the reviews, I'm in the minority here but I just saw it and think it was just awful.
For one thing, I knew who the murderer was soooo early in the film it's not even funny. And the killer's motive is either cheesey as hell or completely nonexistent. Sean Penn, who I think is awesome, was hammy and totally wasted on this. He absolutely deserves an Oscar for his life's work but not this film, no way, IMO.
Utterly predictable, complete schlock, overstated performances, sooo aware of it's our perceived Oscar chances that it loses site of anything else. And the ending, what the hell was that? That Lady MacBeth speech was totally out of nowhere!! And the little Kevin Bacon hand gesture....???
This makes me want to see Million Dollar Baby even less than I already did since the entire plot has been revealed and I can already see how contrived I might feel it to be.
Now, if you want to see a really great movie, go rent The Door in the Floor. I thought it was awesome.

I loved Mystic River. I knew who the killer was very early on, but it didn't ruin it for me. I usually figure movies out early and sometimes it ruins it and sometimes it doesn't. It didn't for me with this movie and for example, it didn't ruin Sixth Sense for me to have figured it out very early. I don't usually like films that everyone else gushes over, but this time I did :)
Anyone planning to see The Ring 2? I thought the first one was awful. I had really been looking forward to it, but I thought it was completely stupid and not the least bit scary. I hated Secret Window. I'm not a big movie fan anyway, but I get so disappointed in some of the movies I most want to see that I hesitate to see anything. I'm usually the last person in America to see a movie so I'm glad someone saw Mystic River after me ;) :D

I just saw Mytic River recently, and probably started watching it too late in the night - kept falling asleep.
I did not figure out (I don't think - I can't really remember), but I do remember thinking it was incredibly depressing/downer of a movie.
As far as The Ring 2 - I never watch "scary" movies. But I do wish they'd quit playing the trailer during shows like American Idol because it freaks my kids out right before they go to bed.

The figuring it out part is not what killed this movie for me. I'm not bothered when I figure movies out, either. Same here with Sixth Sense....I knew early on (guessed it in the first half hour, probably) and still loved it.
What does bother me is when I figure it out AND I think it's completely stupid, like I did with Mystic River. The over-wraught performance, plot, music and "Oh look, I can win an Oscar for this" feeling I got the whole time is what killed it. So many totally out of place little plot pieces....I mean what was the whole point with that Kevin Bacon and his wife subplot? That distracted the crap out of me. And, again, the ending, what was up with the sudden Lady MacBeth thing from Laura Linney and the stupid gun-hand motion Kevin Bacon made? It just makes no sense to me. And seems utterly contrived and constructed to manipulate an Oscar out of us.
E, it wasn't that you were watching it too late, it's that the movie was too plodding to keep you awake!! ;)
Can you tell I REALLY hated this film? I just can't get over how bad I thought it was and how much all the critics loved it. This is weird for me because I do usually like the Oscar films very much. And I hate that I had been so excited to see it and was expecting a lot because I generally LOVE Sean Penn and I think Unforgiven is one of the best films ever. This one just makes me sad.
I loved The Ring. I can do a lot more suspension of disbelief to accept some stupid plot points in a horror movie (maybe if they'd marketted MR as a horror movie it would have worked for me ;) ). And it did scare the living hell out of me. Still to this day when I'm once in a while pulling a dress or sweater off over my head so my eyes are covered I'll have that little gril's face flash in my head. Scares me to death!! I will probably see the sequel eventually but I won't rush right out. For one thing because I don't have time to go to the theater during school unless it's something REALLY special. And for another, I'm sure it will suck. It's a sequel and it's already getting so-so reviews. Unless the reviewers had been raving about it I doubt I'd have rushed right out. And no, I don't usually see movies based on reviews but I do use them to get some idea how it might be and if they are all raving about something surprised I might check it out.

this is my feeling about Dances with Wolves. I have never seen a movie I hated more. I hated everything about it and I've not seen a Kevin Costner movie since. It's not the worse movie I've ever seen, just the one I hated most in all the world of movies!!
I just thought The Ring was an all around stupid movie. It wasn't just a couple of dumb plot twists for me. I thought it was a really bad movie. On the other side of the spectrum, I really liked The Others and I didn't expect to at all. I don't like Nicole Kidman and I had it figured before the end, but I did like it which surprised me. I do like Jodie Foster, but I thought Panic Room sucked. Glad they don't make movies based on what I think I'll like
best scary movie IMO is hands down Halloween. scared the crap out of me and the music is enough to make my hair stand on end even 25 years later!

I'm a wimpy sap. I don't watch those scary movies y'all are talking about (don't even spend 1 moment considering it) but I did like Dances With Wolves.
I had a "thing" for Kevin Costner after that. Too bad he never did anything else good (if you call DWW good and obviously you don't TC) except Tin Cup.
I typically like historical/epic movies. Just recently saw Gladiator (if you can believe it), loved Braveheart, Master and Commander not as much (but it could of been my mood).

What, you didn't like Kevin Costner in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves? ;) I actually love'd him in Bull Durham and Field of Dreams....that's about the only kind of role I think he can play. I love him in those movies. A Perfect World is such a great movie that I don't think he could have messed it up. I've never actually seen DWW.
I can't wait to see The Upside of Anger, though!
BTW, I think I just got The Incredibles from Netflix today! I can't wait to see it!!

Lucky you. I saw that the wait was "long" on Netflix, so I didn't bump it to the top. Needed some kid vids for the trip to Charleston, so I snagged the Spongebob movie and some crappy one instead of risking a wait for The Incredibles.
Okay - maybe my sequential memory is bad, but I was thinking all the "good" Costner movies were before DWW and all the stinkers (The Postman, Water World) came after except Tin Cup. But I'm wondering if maybe JFK came later too. I did like Bull Durham and Field of Dreams (wherever they fell in the Costner timeline, lol).

Oh, I don't have any idea whether those were before or after DWW. I didn't even realize you meant after DWW. I was just thinking other than, lol. I was thinking his career went down-hill after DWW too, so you're probably right.
I think we just bumped The Incredibles to the top of our queue on Saturday, I think, and we sent one movie back Monday and got it today. You should try again...the wait might be over now!!

Hmmm, you're right - I didn't put "since DWW". But I meant to.
There is one scene in DWW where Costner has abandoned his dress uniform and started embrace the 'lifestyle' of his surroundings and he walks up a hill toward the camera, hair flowing, vest open, shirt unbuttoned, and generally looking unkempt and I thought it was worth the long ass movie and price of admission, lol. Kind of like when Colin Firth comes out of the lake all wet in Pride and Prejudice - but not as high brow.

Just watched two DVDs because I'm incredibly bored... The Boondock Saints and The Pianist - both incredibly awesome movies. If you haven't seen the Pianist, you absolutely have to, I mean, like this weekend. It's the best WWII movie you'll ever see from the Jewish perspective. Adrien Brody is fantastic, and it's such a moving story.

So SHC, I have a question since you have that innate ability to 'get' or guess movie twist before they unfold. (I watched Sixth Sense WAY after it had been out, after the Oscars where I muted any references because I knew there was a "twist", and then STILL didn't figure it out until about 1 minute before they exposed it).
Okay so anyway - did you figure out the twist in The Life of David Gale? (Awesome movie in case anyone hasn't seen it.)

Kevin Spacey, Kate Winslet, Laura Linney.
I just noticed that Rotten Tomatoes has a really horrible rating (reviewers), but user feedback at Netflix and IMDB is very good.
It's a death row movie with the story being told in flashbacks and involves anti-death penalty activists.

I also taped Gathering Storm about the days just prior to WWII. I love those kinds of movies so I am anticipating that one and hoping not to be disappointed.

Big Fish was neat, in an odd type way. Keep the title in mind the whole time you watch it. Neat cast. DeVito and Ewan were well worth it.
Tried to rent Finding Neverland, but out out out. Anygood?
Avoid King Arthur like the plague.
David Gale was good too. I like the twists in movies. Never saw that one coming at all.
If you like twists, rent the Village. I kept telling my wife what I thought the twist would be (I was right), as Shamalan is getting predictable now...

What is pretty cool so far is alot of the shots and dialogue seem to be straight from the books. Glad to hear you liked his books, I think the movie is the first three series.
AS far as the Usual Suspects goes you should take a look at LA Confedential also. Very good movie along the same lines.

I think I was the only one in the theater who didn't really like it.
Seemed like the kind of movie where plot wasn't the most important part of the movie, and it showed. The graphics and special effects were different and kinda neat if that's your kind of thing, but it isn't mine. Maybe if I had read the novels, but I really didn't understand this movie.
Then again, my experience might have been made worse by the 2 guys sitting in front of me who went "OOOHhhh SNAP!!!" with elaborate and enthusiastic arm movements every time someone gut shot or punched or whatnot.

04-09-2005, 09:36 PM
Maybe reading the novels does help you understand (I've read the first three), but I guess lots of people didn't read them beforehand, either, and the effects reeled them in. However, I think the whole attempt at a modern day film noir creation might have been a turn off. Some people don't wanna see 'black and white' movies. Although it is #1 in the box office (or maybe #2 by now?), so I guess lots of people are at least giving it a shot. I think the originality is why a lot of people liked it. But I did follow the plot, but I can see how it might have been detached or disinteresting...
Turbulence
04-09-2005, 09:57 PM
Maybe I look at the plot as too important in the whole context of the film...but you're right, it seemed very detached.
It didn't flow linearly (which in itself isn't necessarily a bad thing in itself...other movies like Run Lola Run have had this and been okay...) and it wasn't until near the very end when I really understood what was going on. It jumped from one story to another to another and I was sort of left thinking...was that the end of the previous story? And at this point when you can't be involved in the plot at all, all you can see is the fake violence and how bad it is when there is no plot to go with it.
I do have to say, though, any time you have oddly shaped yellow freaks in your movie, any semblance of reality goes out the window. It was about around his first appearence that it crossed the line from "what a weird movie..." to "this movie really, really sucks." But then again, this is just my interperetation. I'm sure some background in the series helps alot.

Let me preface my statements by saying that I *love* the Sin City books.
They're gorgeous, the stories are neat, etc.
With that said, the movie is lacking in something. The movie is gorgeous, yes, Rourke is good, and Old Town is everything it should be...but a comic book is not a movie and vice versa. Dialogue that is stunning when you read it sounds remarkably cheesy coming out of Clive Owen's mouth. I must say that this phenomenon is not limited to Sin City. I know lots of people who gagged in disgust when Mary Jane said "Go get 'em, tiger," in Spiderman 2...I know just as many people who CHEERED IN THE THEATER, myself included. I think it's something you accept or don't, whether it's because of the comic book nature of the material or noir in general.
There is plenty of good stuff in the Sin City film outside of the visuals. Rourke is great, as is Del Toro, and the scene Tarantino directed with Owen and Del Toro is hilarious (as is the guy with the arrow through him). Elijah Wood is CREEPY AS HELL. Willis does the best he can despite being WAY too young for the part.
Anyway, I think it's a decent movie...not great, not bad.

I'm confused -- which isn't surprising.
I mean I totally got that the beginning snip was the end (or the beginning of the end) or post-erasure and then we went back to tell the story of how they got there.
I'll admit I'm a horrible "figure outer" (didn't figure out Sixth Sense till about a minute before it was obvious), so I'm wondering if I'm missing something else from the movie or if I actually "got" this one, lol.
I enjoyed it, thought Winslet and Carrey were great.

04-17-2005, 02:10 PM
There is no intention in Eternal Sunshine of keeping the viewer in the dark once the opening post-erasure sequence is done and we fade back into the past. It is intended to confuse the viewer a bit, a sort of "Hey, wait, this can't be right, how can this stuff happen up top?" but once that fun is over I don't think there's a lot of effort made to conceal what's going on because of the movie's nature as a character piece and the attention paid to the office characters and Gondry's visuals. The one instance of deception I can think of is the slight attempt to hide Elijah Wood's face the first time he shows up at the bookstore, but the clues that turn up in the erased memories and link to the opening sequence outnumber them by far.

I didn't think they were trying to keep us in the dark, either. Mr SHC has a real problem with movies that play with time so I figured it was just him who couldn't figure it out....that's why I asked but then no one ever answered.

That is SO on our list to see, SHC. How did Evan Rachel Wood do? I think her character's name is Popeye.... maybe? You know she's Ira David Wood's (of Theatre in the Park in Raleigh) daughter. The last time she was in town, she'd just finished filming her scenes and when we were talking about it, she said she had "a good feeling" about the movie and that she was optimistic it'd be well-received.

LOL, I think so. I just saw the words "movie thread" and posted.
Her character's name is Popeye and I thought she was great. She can do so much without even speaking! I really liked her character, too. Actually, the movie was full of characters I loved!
