Marc Staal and Ryan Parent to face off in prospects game

Thunder Bay’s Marc Staal and Sioux Lookout’s Ryan Parent are among the 40 players chosen to take part in next Wednesday’s Top Prospects Game in Vancouver.
The annual event is a showcase for NHL scouts and features only draft-eligible players on the two team’s rosters.
Staal is a six-foot-three defenceman with the Sudbury Wolves and is the younger brother of Carolina Hurricanes centre Eric Staal. The youngster, who turns 18 on Thursday, has three goals and 12 assists in 39 Ontario Hockey League games.
Parent, 17, a six-foot-two blueliner who skates with the Guelph Storm, has one goal and 11 assists in 40 contests.
All 40 players were selected to play through consultation with the 30 NHL teams.
“This is a special time in the lives of these young athletes,†said Canadian Hockey League President David Branch in a press release issued Tuesday. “The Home Hardware Top Prospects Game has a long tradition of providing budding young stars with a stage to display thir skills against many of the game’s top players from their age group.â€
More than 340 players who have taken part in the game have gone on to be drafted by an NHL team, including five No. 1 overall selections. They include Chris Phillips (1996), Joe Thornton (1997), Vincent Lecavalier (1998), Rick Nash (2002) and Marc-Andre Fleury (2003).
That tradition will likely continue this year. Sidney Crosby, the 17-year-old phenom with the Rimouski Oceanic, is also among the players chosen for the game.
Don Cherry and John Davidson will serve as head coaches for the Jan. 19 game. Parent will play for Cherry’s Team Black, a roster that also includes top prospect Gilbert Brule.
Davidson will guide Crosby and Staal behind the bench of Team White. The game can be seen live on Rogers Sportsnet.

OMG- hee hee. I'll explain E- you are the eternal optimist-(I don't know how you and my hub do that)! :D
On Marc Staal, hub and I were just musing the other day when he was 'researching' potential prospects, (don't ask, it makes him feel useful or something) how when we saw E.Staal get drafted in NSH how 'the younger kids seem broader/bulkier' than big bro even . Hub checks out the Wolves website to get stats and discovers the 6'3 Marc is 205 lb & he's going on 18! He's going to be a big kid....
I am wondering how they're going to do this if this thing is toast and the season is cancelled. These poor kids are in limbo.

when we were in Norfolk I saw the people who sit in front of me at the RBC and they had talked with JR about baby Staal. he told them that this is the Staal with the greatest potential and that the Canes had been watching his progress carefully.

That is nice to know. I wish we had a team and a game with a bright future to put him on.

If you recall THN's cover story on Staal just before the draft in 2003, he has 3 other brothers, Marc obviously and Jordan (who plays for Peterborough) and Jared (not sure where he is), according to that article the buzz in on Jared who at the time of the article was 12 I believe- wouldn't it be something if they all made it? Wow, too much pressure, taking that back....

I am a season ticket holder for the Peterborough Petes where Eric played, and i now get the pleasure of watching his younger brother Jordan. Jordan just turned 16 in october, and he is already 6'3 200.

Alright, will do. Jordan was selected in the OHL draft 3rd overall, as some of you may know. He started the season quite slow. Over Christmas he played for the under 17 and had some great success, since then, he has been putting the puck in the net on more of a regular basis as he is also now playing the point on the PP. He has a great shot from the point, and he hasnt hesitated to use it. I'll keep you all posted as the season continues.
I have watched Marc Staal play a couple times this year and last year when the Wolves play the Petes. So far i have collected that Marc is a solid defenceman who has good offensive instincts and can rush the puck rather well. He has a physical element to his game and clears the crease rather well. He is not afraid to get in the rough stuff as he has some size to him. It should also be noted that Marc has a good leadership role to his game, he is only in his 2nd year in the OHL and already wears an "A". I find that pretty impressive as you dont usually see a 2nd year player in the OHL with a letter.

Ottawa could host 2008 NHL Entry Draft
TSN.ca Staff
If the 2004-2005 NHL season is cancelled, hockey fans in Ottawa may have to wait another three years to see the stars of tommorow don their first pro jerseys.
Ottawa Tourism and Convention Services manager Mylene Poulsen told TSN Friday that the National Hockey League has sent a contract to the OTCA saying that if the 2005 Entry Draft is cancelled, the Corel Centre will get the 2008 Draft pending the Senators' approval.
The Senators and the NHL have declined to comment.
With no collective bargaining agreement and the league and Players' Association still entrenched in their labour dispute, it's very possible that Rimouski Oceanic phenom Sidney Crosby and the rest of the 2005 class could find themselves without a draft to go to.
The Senators were to host the event on the weekend of June 25-26. The annual showcase for future NHLers is held over two days, with the first three rounds on Saturday and rounds four through nine happening on Sunday.
