Interesting article. I had heard about this awhile ago, but as the gloom and doom predicted for the CBA gets closer, this really makes sense. Interesting list of cities as well. Remember, Winnipeg just finished off a new arena. Maybe they're thinking WHL all the way instead of NHL (I believe it's only a 15K-sized arena)

I see Hartford is among the list of cities that might get a team. Wonder if that means we'll be seeing the Whalers Mark II?

Doom and gloom indeed.

From TSN.CA

Goodenow: NHLPA won't take a cap
TSN.ca Staff
4/20/2003

Some very strong words came from the NHL Player's Association over the weekend, with a warning that there might be no hockey for some time after the current labour deal expires in 2004.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has said on several occasions that without a salary cap, many teams in the league will simply run out of gas.

NHLPA executive director Bob Goodenow made his response to newspapers in Philadelphia Saturday.

"There will never be a salary cap," he told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "I've told the players to be prepared for a long lockout by the owners. It may last a year, it may last two or three years, but we will never accept a salary cap. This isn't the NFL. I'm confident the players are prepared for whatever happens."

The current collective agreement between the NHL and the NHL Players Association expires in September 2004.

If they are willing to ruin the game, then we are all in for a bad time starting in 2004

I love my hockey but I don't see how any of them could be unhappy with their salaries....even the ones making $200,000 a year!! Making that kind of money for doing something that they love...let some of them come sit in our offices and do what we do for our pay!!

Add to that the fees they get for autograph signings at shows, money froom endorsement deals, royalties for having their likenesses on posters and sportwear, etc....... Like I've said before, I'd rip off an appendage to play just one shift! If they are crying about the $$$, I say boo MF'N hoo.

while I generally don't think baseball is the model for good decision making, they DID get it this time and settle before the strike. hopefully, no one wants to be part of ruining the game and what we are seeing is oneupsmanship (is that one word?).

I will be really disappointed and ticked off if they don't at least sit down at the same table and start the talks before the deadline approaches. they all need to realize that not one of them is bigger than the game.

I have a friend playing in the ECHL. He went to Harvard, graduated and couldn't get a job, so he went and got himself a job in the CHL, toiled there for 3 years, and then moved on to the ECHL. He is making better money than I am, and I have been an established Graphic Designer / Prepress Technician for nearly 10 years! It kind of makes you think when a HARVARD graduate can make more money doing anyhting BUT what he went to school for, doesn't it.

talk is cheap, until the time approaches when a deal needs to be made.

I really have a HARD time believing that these guys would rather get paid nothing, and not play hockey for a year... two years.... three years... ever?, instead of being told they can ONLY (laughable. "only") make $2.5mil a year, tops.

of course, Goodenow is the real problem, imo. someone needs to make him an offer he can't refuse.

Remember both sides ladies and gents...

The Owners...

Players want more money money money, but don't forget the owners. If the players want a bigger chunk, the owners and possessing that right now.

I think the owners have more to lose...Many are financed up to their you know what in owning the teams, possibly taking hits in the red each year (although I think they exaggerate the totals they 'say' they're losing) I think in the end, the owners, unfortunately will crack to the players. They have more to lose.

The way teams have gone under this year..and all the revenue lost in teams not going on in the playoffs...they better find a solution to this and quick...or there will no longer be ANY hockey clubs!!  Lots of different things at stake here!! I for one can't do without the Canes...I am too far gone! We might have to move to that negotiating table and plead....

I am hoping that Lemieux and Gretsky with perspective from both sides will be helpful.

The owners are always going to make more money than anyone else. They do take the risks, financially speaking. The people who own the company I work for make more money than me.

They still have time to get it settled and they owe it to all of us to try. Memo to NHL: it's not all about you. The fans are involved too.

9 times out of 10 players are making WAY more money than the owners.

Owners of all sports teams do not own a team solely. They also own a business, and usually a major one (see Illitch). Why is that? Because they can use their real business to absorb losses.

There aren't many (at all) NHL clubs that are in the black consistently. And that is a huge problem. For the players to say they don't want to give up some of their money to owners is ludicrous. You don't have a team if you don't have an owner that can at least once in awhile not be 15 mil in the hole.

Don't compare MLB to NHL. The owners there are a different story. Well, everything there is a different story, from a business perspective, look at the salary difference (and they're starting to have some SERIOUS revenue problems).

But NHL, like it or not, is still very small-time. Yet the players are wanting more and more money. The owners are loosing money. We had 2 teams almost fold this season, and not teams like Nashville... we're talking Buffalo. Ottawa.

If the players can't realize what's going on here.... they won't be calling themselves NHL players for very long.
