The Kloten Flyers sign NHL Legend Rod Brind'Amour

Instead of Jeff Halpern, who had to leave the team because of tragic, unexpected family reasons, the Kloten Flyers have signed 35 year old center Rod Brind'Amour through the end of the 04-05 season, or the end of the lockout.

Rod played 3 years with the St Louis Blues, 9 years with the Philadelphia Flyers, and the last 4 years with the Carolina Hurricanes. In 1225 NHL games he has amassed 1000 points.

Rod Brind'Amour, a Canadian from Ottawa, will land at 7:50 on Thursday morning in Zürich with United Airlines.

Why on earth would they give the airline information? Anyway, I wish him the best luck in the world. He's really been a champion for getting a deal worked out...he's our highest paid player and the least greedy, a true class act. I hope he does well.

He is surely a great guy. Best of luck to him. I can remember last year when BullDogg got his first career shutout at the RecZone Rod was there and made a point to talk to him when he came out of the locker room and congratulated him. Even signed BullDoggs "Archie Irbe Stick," as Rod called it.

From the Kloten Flyers message board:

WOOOOOOOOOW!

Jetzt sind die Play-offs wohl so gut wie gebucht!

HAMMERTRANSFER! Kann mir nichts besseres vorstellen....

They're in 9th place out of 12 teams right now with 41 points after 42 games. League leader has 61, second (Davos, where I believe Thorton is playing - or at least showing up) has 52 points.

So, I guess the ironic part is that Rod's a Flyer again!

They were wondering if Rod was in shape, or just another big-name, lazy NHL player...boy are they in for a surprise!

Someone posted a good description of him (you know, fast, strong, smart, good on pk, pp, good checker, good scorer, etc...) and another person said "That sounds like Superman. Can he fly, too?" :D

In other news, that is a dang funky dialect they speak in on that message board. The Swiss are weird.

From what I understand of the way the Swiss Nationalliga works, the teams that missed the playoffs have a "play-out" to see who gets relegated to the second tier of the league and who stays in the upper tier.

Thanks Storm*, my german is non-existant, so I'd be clueless. So, is that similar to the teams not making the NHL playoffs playing to see which team goes to the AHL the following year? I'm guessing then that the B league does the reverse - meaning if you win the playoffs, you move to the A league?

Are you from Europe or did you just pay close attention in German class?

I think that's how the B league works, but I'm not 100% sure on that. But yes, relegation is about like the 14 teams that don't make the NHL playoffs playing to see who moves down and who stays up. Several of the Euro leagues work that way--the German League, for example, has the bottom two teams in their standings play a 7-game series to determine which of them will get relegated to the Zweite Bundesliga (the second league) and be replaced by the champion of that league. This year, Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg took the place of the Wölfe Freiburg (Freiburg Wolves), and it looks like this year's play-down will be between the Kassel Huskies and the Hannover Scorpions. In the Czech Extraliga, they simply relegate the last-place team (which is Trinec this season) and bring up the top team in their second-tier league.

Are you from Europe or did you just pay close attention in German class?

I'm good. ;)

Actually, I took 3 years of German in high school and have been keeping in practice over the years by reading German-language newspapers and magazines and corresponding with friends that I have across the Pond. My next goal in life is to improve my Russian to the point where I can actually read up on their league, and to learn Czech so I can follow the Czech Extraliga.

What? Stop looking at me like that!

Shortly after the start of the first period, Lausanne leads Kloten 2-0 on goals from Patrick Boileau and former Mannheim Eagle Andy Roach.

Rod had a couple nice shots in the first, but just couldn't get anything banged home. It's really funny listening to the announcer say Rod's name, too--he really rolls those Rs like nobody's business! :D

Bah, Lausanne just scored again--3-0. Kloten's called a time-out so the coach can rally the troops.

Edit: The rally seems to have worked--kinda. It's 4-2 Lausanne now (Rod just scored the second Kloten goal on a sweet pass from linemate Kimmo Rintanen).

Sorry, was confused about what point it was in the game. Still first period.

Thank you so much for the update - it got me through the afternoon. I'm missing hockey more now that my favorite player is playing and I can't watch.

I think I'm getting better at this but I need a confirmation - Kloten won 8-4 today. Rod had 2 assists and a penalty (2 minutes) although for what I can't translate. So they are 2-0 or 3-0 in the series. It appears they came back from 0-4 so it must have been a blast to watch (or listen to)!

The Suisse site had this as the summary of Kloten scores: but did you hear Rod score?? If I'm not mistaken, he has a good 6 points in 4 games.

15:53 Timo Helbling (Kimmo Rintanen, Dave Tanabe)
22:59 Kimmo Rintanen (Severin Blindenbacher, Domenic Pittis)
24:12 Dave Tanabe (Kimmo Rintanen)
26:11 Andy Rufener (Romano Lemm)
45:03 Domenic Pittis (Rod Brind'Amour, Dave Tanabe)
53:36 Kimmo Rintanen (Sven Lindemann)
54:11 Kimmo Rintanen (Rod Brind'Amour, Sven Lindemann)
55:33 Romano Lemm (Andy Rufener, Victor Stancescu)

Thank you so much for the update - it got me through the afternoon. I'm missing hockey more now that my favorite player is playing and I can't watch.

I feel your pain--My favorite player is in the Czech Extraliga this season, and there's a pitiful dearth of English-language information about that league so I'm forced to rely on dribs and drabs that people post in weblogs and try to muddle through stat sheets.

They should be 2-0 in the series now--I stopped listening when the score was 4-2 (I was falling asleep in front of the computer--darn those third shifts), and I had a sinking feeling that Kloten would start winning when I turned off the netcast.

The Suisse site had this as the summary of Kloten scores: but did you hear Rod score?? If I'm not mistaken, he has a good 6 points in 4 games.

Either he scored or he got an assist--It was rough listening to the netcast in some spots, because the Swiss announcer had a wicked thick accent and was talking VERY fast. Think Chuck Kaiton fast, here.

The penalty that Rod got was "Unnecessary Roughness"--judging from the fact that several players got that, I'm guessing that the game was a little on the chippy side. :)

You should come to the gym I go to - there are 2 Czechs - I know they are hockey fans, because I recognized them from 2 rows in front of me for at least 5 games last year. Maybe I could get them to translate some Czech summaries for you?

Do any of you watch MXC on spike tv? The quirky Japanese show with the dubbed voices and people getting slammed in mud? One of the shows tonight had a guy with a red tshirt on with, "Tanabe" across the front. One of my kids goes, ''Hey look! He's wearing a Tanabe shirt! He's a cane's fan!" I didn't have the heart to tell them it was a common Japanese name. (And this Brind'amour thread was hijacked long before my post :D )

BTW, Kloten and Lausanne play Game 3 today at 1:40 PM. I'll try to post a running update for those who are interested (and since I'm off today, no need for a pre-work nap! Woohoo!)

EDIT: Ummm...make that TOMORROW at 1:40 PM. Sorry, working third shift gets my days all mixed up.

I've been looking for it too. I found an article quoting Brindy about the lockout but, IMO, that is not what he said....at all. He didn't seem to be referring to a specific team at all. He said something to the effect of it being hard for us to get back what we gained after the SCF but, that to me isn't saying we won't recover.

He was paraphrased in some article as saying something about the team hasn't been around here long enough for hockey to become ingrained in our daily life [like it might be in a Detroit or Montreal market]. I can't remember the exact words. I didn't get that he was in any way playing down team loyalty in this area or how we feel about our team. He was worried. I think he's worried about all 30 teams making it through this. Most of all, I think he just wants to play. The quotes from him after the players proposal was turned down and after the season was cancelled seem ... I don't know - incredulous that a deal couldn't be made. I can understand the concern. When you have a space in your life[i.e. no hockey], you look for ways to fill it, and when the thing/person/whatever that created that space comes back, sometimes there's no room left to fill...you've found other ways to fill the space/time. Anyway - my 2 cents.
