Jeff has truly come out as a high-character player recently, and I want to thank him for being one of the few players in the entire NHL to acknowledge the hell the fans and employees of the NHL have been through over the last week in his recent interviews.

He is one of the few I have found in interviews to actually have some sense of empathy for us. He's appearing more down to earth than ever, and I have to admit I've been fairly critical of him regarding his relationship with fans. But this week he has shined. He and Keith Primeau have regained much respect from me during this lockout, and it makes me think all hope is not lost for some of these players that keep breaking our hearts day in and day out with their statements and negotiation,"tactics."

Totally agree AP! :D

I do have a contract question. How do the contracts work out for players like Jeff who is an RFA and signed a 1 year deal. Obviously under normal circumstances that contract would need qualification by July 1, 2005. But certainly they aren't doing that sort of thing. Do the contracts then get pushed out 1 year as is?

If the CBA was signed on 9/1/2005, would Jeff be under the contract signed last summer, but the expiration would now be 7/1/2006?

I hope my question is clear, but I don't think I explained it that well.

Jeff is one that always acknowledged the fans on the ice.. especially at practice but would also blow past most and not stop. So he knows that devotion well and he realizes how important it was to him and the team. How many teams with records like they have had the past two years would have lines waiting for them after practice and after games when they stunk up the ice? Canes fans even amaze me sometimes.

By the way, tomorrow is his 29th birthday.

I so totally agree with everyone regarding Jeff- I have never been the big "O'Neill fan" probably because I always thought he was/is the star of the team and I have a tendancy to be drawn to the K.Adams and J. Boulerices of the world ;) But I'm like Mona, he always acknowledges the fans especially at RecZone and RBC practices- has always been one that has been conscious of our presence while all eyes are on the team and the every little move they make as they practice- He has been so empathetic towards the fans- and I'll site both the N&O comments after the final nail was put on the coffin and the comments he has made on the 3 different interviews he did with Fan590 not only about the great fans here, but the great place 'that is home for me'. I'm like apolinar, I had my 'concerns' about various reports/stories about him and fans- but more and more, it's the exact opposite. Having been critical of his game at times, I am witness to what Mona says about him having a gaggle of people waiting for him after practices when he was stinking up the ice portions of last year, and he signed and chatted with EVERYONE.

I do have a contract question. How do the contracts work out for players like Jeff who is an RFA and signed a 1 year deal. I hope my question is clear, but I don't think I explained it that well.

E- your question is clear, but I'm not sure exactly, although, I think I read that the current contract is 'valid' through the year that was supposed to be played- and I heard another that said, it would extend to the following season- I'm going to the NHLPA webstie (yes , glutton for punishment) to see if I can pull up the expired CBA- and see if there is anything on that specifically.

I have my own tidbit/Jeff O'Neill story, that I have to now share, since I have shared it with two other posters here, that illustrates "O" and his regard for the fans- true story and just give me the chuckles everytime I tell someone- or type it out in a note to friends- hope everyone finds my chuckle humor funny- so here it goes:

Last Saturday (2/12) hub and I were on our way to buy some hardwood floors for the remodeling project that we have undertaken (wouldn't be doing this if there was hockey, but ok-I'm over that) so we're on the Beltline heading towards the Yonkers Road exit, which is where the hardwood flooring place is- Hub and I are engrossed in a conversation about what else the NHL- I'm forgetting what specifically we were debating about, but it was intense enough. I'm the passenger in our SUV and we're in the 3rd of the 4 lanes just passing the Six Forks exit- while I'm talking with my hands and trying to make my point, I'm slightly turned and looking at hub, when I notice there is a white Range Rover in the next lane- (far left) and it is like neck and neck with us- we're still blabbing, and hub and I at the same time note "what's the deal with the dude next to us......" and hubby says "I must know this person" and as he says that, the Range Rover is honking at us and waving wildly- who is it? as I turn my body to face directly towards the white car- IT's JEFF O'NEILL! He's smiling, giving us the thumbs up and pointing at the object of his attention- My SUV tire cover is the black leather Hurricane logo cover- I have it, a Canes vanity plate and a couple of glass window clings with Canes logos and EC champs and Southeast Div Champs2002 on the back window; He's smiling and honking and waving and basically saying "thanks" for the support. I blew him a kiss (Tee Hee) and hub honked the horn and he was off in the fastlane- we nearly missed our exit because we were STUNNED.

Hubby kept saying- "I could see Kevyn Adams or even Jesse doing something like that but O'Neill?? I'm just floored". :D
I'll tell that story to anyone who'll listen and it'll be just as funny as it was that Saturday afternoon when I started madly emailing and telling everyone who called that weekend what had happend  Hubby thought it was a "Sign" that something was going to get done- Oh, yeah, now I know what we were talking about -the dueling memos about the $49million vs $42million offer and the possible cancellation of the season. So in Hub's mind it was a "sign" that a happy, smiling honking Jeff O'Neill was the "SIGN" that said to him that they wouldn't cancel the season. Well, the sign was O'Neill is a good guy, and they still cancelled the season.

Ok, I've gone wayyyyyyy long. Had to share and now that there is a thread dedicated to it - thought I'd share my all time best "Hurricane Sighting"... :spin:

That's a great story SoCal. :D Thanks for sharing it (again)!

I think I'd heard the situation as you desribe (in terms of the contracts).

It makes me think of the Sean Hill contract situation and that perhaps JR knew what he was doing. As much as I love Hill (most of the time ;)) and how he played under PL was great., I'm not sure we need/want Sean Hill with a 3rd year option for 2007-2008 . Of course, this is presuming that's the effect the non-played season has on contracts.

Sounds like both JR and Hill made the right choice given the current situation.

Yay!! :nanner:

I've seen his comments lately myself and I'm glad to see it being discussed. So often, Jeff only gets talked about on the MBs by those of us who consider him one of our favorite players or when he does something horse's a$$ like.

I'm sure he's still a moody little pr*ck at times but I do think he loves this game and is one of the players who would play under a cap just to get back on the ice. Hope I'm right.

Great story SoCal!! Can I ride around with you guys some Saturday afternoon? These things never happen to me!

Tee Hee, you're makin' me laugh SHC & O's#1, Anytime girlies! - it would get interesting eh? (SoCal picturing hubby's face as he chaffeurs a gaggle of Canes lovin' women around the Triangle ;) ) just that right place, right time thingy, believe me, we're out and about ALOT, but it's always the 'odd' moment when this type of stuff happens- hey, we have been in situations/other NHL Cities where we were just dying to see a player, any player, and go a weekend, and not see anyone except on the ice- but then, when we go away on roadies, we've never been ones to stake out the hotel like we probably should  it's all fate or somethin' .... tee hee.....

I swear, we have had some INTERESTING Hurricane sightings - "while minding our own business" (LOL) The fun is in the fact that 28 years of my life was spent in the land of fruits and nuts- SoCal to you and me, and we tend to be a bit blase` about 'celebs' and stars- and I've seen a few out there, approached some, and been in the same store/function/event with alot of different so-called 'stars'- but the most joyful/insane/silly 'sightings' have always been Hurricane/hockey player (non Canes in other NHL Cities/events) related, and I could tell those stories forever and never get tired- the so called celebs have come and gone and while those stories might have impressed some people- I always love to see the shock and awe of people who hear me tell the "we got honked at by Jeff O'Neill on the Beltline" story.....

Here's to another sighting/encounter with a Cane..... hmmmm......

Your image of a gaggle of lgc-ers being driven around reminds me of a post in an old Ladies thread that was a satiric "AP article" on "Mo Daddy" (Paul Maurice) driving around a stretch Escalade filled with lgc-ers. It was THE most hilarious thing I think I've read on this forum, but I believe it was a victim of site crash.

Maybe in the depths of despair this summer we can start a "Cane Encounter" thread and share funny stories.

But I do think that SHC's likelihood of an "encounters" would increase dramatically if she moved to the Cane 'burbs of Cary/Apex or North Raleigh. ;)
