Just curious since it's in the news and on the pumps....

I paid over $2 for the first time today. $2.09 for Exxon Regular in Durham.

I remember when I first got my drivers license gas was 64.9. Everyone was hopping mad about it, but to make it worse, the lines were blocks long due to the gas shortage. It was maddening to drive up to a gas station and see the sign reading "out of gas". Let's hope we don't get back to that!

Heard that California is $2.86/gal......

Most of Cali is over $3/gal actually.

The place I use as my barometer, and is normally cheaper than most places on our daily route... is now at $2.09/gal. ugh.

if not for a baby... it'd be time to switch to a cycle.
wonder if they make carseats that sit in sidecars? lol

I hear you Guy. Wife and I were contemplating an SUV this summer, possibly the Ford Freestyle (car/SUV mix), but I'm leaning toward a Corolla 6-speed. Phew. Amazing.

1.99 is the cheapest I can find. I'm up at the in-laws now in DC and you don't even want to hear some of the prices in Northern Virginia. I just hope I can make it to Richmond tomorrow. I'm not filling up up here.

RaleighGasPrices.com lists 1.96 as the lowest price around, at a Texaco in Cary of all places. The highest listed is 2.15 at a Phillips 66 in Raleigh.

Me? I'm going to resist going places as much as possible. I just wish I lived near something...so we wouldn't have to drive 5 miles every time we need something.

rcf as big a Ford guy as I am and as excited about the Freestyle as I am, the Corolla is head-over-heels above every other non-hybrid car on the market right now. I went to the car show, the sticker for the Corolla listed above 30 mpg road and city, and nothing else was even close.

The question is...how high does it get before it starts to radically alter our lifestyle? Before people stop buying Suburbans and driving them 65 mph at every opportunity? Before people start carpooling and biking? I hope soon...I think we're already starting to see the effects now.

Lowest near me in Charlotte has been 1.99. It just went up to that today.

I see a lot of bloodsucking credit card companies lately that have "gas station" cards with these big signs that say "save 5 cents a gallon!" if you get one of their cards, which are probably like 15-20% interest...

I hear you Turby! Big Ford guy myself (from a long family of Fords). Wife has a 2000 Corolla and not only gets good gas mileage, but few recalls and few problems. My Focus and my ZX2 before it have had major recalls and problems.

Corolla 6 speed will probably not get as good of gas mileage as her car, but gotta love the stick for mileage. Plus I don't exactly drive to save gas, but whaddya gonna do.

I hate right now the trip we're on. Left NC on Friday for Western PA. Came to Northern VA yesterday. Head back home tomorrow. Cheapest gas I came across was 1.96 at 2 Sheetzs (is that grammatically correct? :D ) in Winchester, VA.

Mr NCCanes and I were just discussing this today as well (obviously it was on my mind, since I started the thread).

With 2 pretty busy kids (elem and M.S. age) we often take 2 cars to whatever event we go to. If one kid has to be at the soccer field an hour before a game, only 1 will go and then the other will come at game time with the 2nd kid. The closest soccer field to us is probably 10 miles away, so even that becomes a 40 mile trek in 2 cars. Probably just not the wisest economically/environmentally.

I've also begun to rethink the "carpool" mentality we use - typically we have 1 family "bring" and the other "pick up". Which means both families are making the round trip. Not necessarily the smartest way to do it.

We're headed to SC on Friday, I'm curious about the prices...

They had a story on CBS (last night?) about how for many people with large SUVs, it ends up being more economical for them to rent a car or minivan for a week when they go on vacation...the money saved on gas ends up making up for the rental fee, and more, when compared to driving a Suburban or Excursion that gets 10 mpg. Pretty interesting stuff.

I know people that drive more economical cars (gas and sticker price) and then rent a bigger vehicle for vacation. They save money on the purchase price and gas all year and then pay for a week of a big vehicle when they actually need it!

Interesting though. Drive a SUV around town with 2 kids and a couple of backpacks and then squish into a smaller car with all the vacation stuff!

The store I work at just went up to $2.08/gallon for Regular today (from $2.06).

Unfortunately, the rising price of gas means that a lot of gas stations/convenience stores are having an increase in drive-offs--especially the chain that I work for, because they have an "unconditional approval" policy (i.e. we have to approve a beaconing pump whether we can see the car/driver or not). Each store has their own way of dealing with it--at my store, we don't approve the pump if we can't see the car or driver (if there's only one person working). If two people are working, then one of us will go out and take down a plate number and get a description of the driver and then give the high sign to the other clerk to go ahead and approve the pump.

That is my commute but only to downtown Raleigh and I despise it more everyday that passes. The gas station on our exit raised the prices $.02 while we were at work. It was $2.07. I was in Winston-Salem last week for a family member's funeral and the gas was in the $1.95 range.
