And wouldn't you know it - I'll be at that game on Saturday night to see River Dog's "debut".
I LOVE this press release - nice to see people that have a sense of humor!
South Carolina Trades Cool Ray
For Charlie The Riverdog
March 23, 2005
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – The South Carolina Stingrays announced that they have traded Cool Ray, the team mascot, to the Charleston Riverdogs for future considerations. The Riverdogs are the South Atlantic League affiliate of the New York Yankees and it is believed that the Stingrays will acquire Charlie the RiverDog (pictured) prior to “Dodge Baseball Night†on Saturday when South Carolina hosts Charlotte.
“For baseball night, we needed a mascot that was a bit more experienced on the diamond than Cool Ray,†said Stingrays president Taylor Lee. “Cool Ray would literally be a fish out of water on baseball night, so we needed to move him and pick up a baseball mascot.â€
The Stingrays will wear pinstriped Riverdogs baseball uniforms for the game on Saturday and the uniforms will be auctioned off following the game. (yay - I get to see gimmick unis in person!)
The Riverdogs will be hosting a Stingrays Hockey Night during baseball season in which they will wear Stingrays baseball jerseys. The new voice of the Riverdogs, Josh Maurer will broadcast the hockey game, and the Stingrays voice, Darren Abbott will handle the broadcast duties during Stingrays hockey night at the Joe.

awesome!..... the best part of the all start game was the mascots and they had mascot broom ball at the hockey east tournament last week. Personally, T-Bone the san antonio rampage mascot, was my fav. What a ham, I'd trade for him!

I got to see the River Dog and Cool Ray on Saturday night. Decided to pull for the home team and was treated to a 5-2 win. Three goals in the first period.
It was so much fun seeing hockey live again, makes you miss it really bad.
Charleston has a nice little arena and if you are ever going to that arena for any reason, the Embassy Suites is RIGHT THERE, they even share a parking lot and it looks like there is covered interior hallway connections between the two buildings. Very nice to have the free happy hour/appetizers and then make the short walk to the arena.
Nice arena, decent food choices (though I didn't have any), Starbucks, etc. They even have a jumbotron with video features, but the quality was crappy and they didn't use it for replays.
I have to say, we saw the funniest intermission entertainment - bar none! It was done by the Zooperstars. Kind of like inflatable mascots that were modeled after stars of various sports. We had "Mario LeMule" as one of our performers. I have never seen a crowd laughing so hard as they did.
