Continue civilly, perhaps?

Seriously, I think we should be able to discuss the game if we want, b/c I didn't even get to comment afterwards before it got locked.

The Dean Dome was rockin' - about 10,000 people showed, and after the Heels went up by 4 within the last 10 seconds, it just went insane. It was deafening.

Franklin Street was fun as hell. I loved being in that huge crowd (45,000 people they're saying showed up there), and jumping across the bonfires and cheering. Lots of fun.

Anywho, there's a poll on WRAL about which players will leave. It'll be interesting to see who does, that's for sure. But for now I guess the Heels will savor the win.

My cousin was at the Dean Dome and called me when we won. I couldn't believe how loud it was. I thought the 20 kids watching with me in the lobby were loud. ;) A couple of my friends drove down to Franklin afterwards and I would've gone, but I couldn't miss my morning class.

I'm glad Franklin remained pretty calm...no car flipping and fun stuff like that. (...or at least that I've heard of...)

Hey Guy--could the reason we're not big college hoops fans be because PA (both East and West) doesn't have consistently good teams? Yes, we have a good every so often, but my fam always laughs when I tell them how they break into regular programming to announce a new coach. They're all Pitt fans though...

Well after hearing the players comments yesterday I think McCants, Felton are definite gonners. Roy needs to talk Marvin into staying. May sounds like he wants to stay, but I'd be suprised to see him stay if all the others leave.

I've often wondered where the heck all the animosity between schools comes from. I admit I got caught up in it as a student at State but now that I'm out, it just doesn't hold the same water with me. I wanted UNC to win for ACC pride. I actually like a couple of thier players. How can you not like Jackie Manuel. He is all heart. Reminds me of 90% of the players who played for state in the mid/late 90's. All they had was heart.

Looks like the ACC won the big ten challenge again ;)

Anyway congrats tarheel fan.

you must've misread something I said... I am a college hoops fan. I'm not a fan of any one school (in the ACC) in particular. I have no allegiences, which in this area, makes me somewhat unique. :)

as for schools up north... my dad and some of his fam went to St. Joe's..
I spent time with friends at most of the Eastern PA schools. Yeah, it's definitely not the same up there as it is down here. But, I can't think of another area (in such close proximity) that has 3-4 highly competitive teams year in and year out. it's what makes this place the hoops mecca that it is. (imo)

As a State fan, I'm a certified hater, but whatcha gonna do?

They (UNC) deserved to win and they did. Give them their just due.

State fans are a lot like Philly fans. We're frustrated enough and have enough of an inferiority complex that after years of lashing out at others, it's now just as easy to lash out at our own. Just my 2 cents.

(I haven't read the last few pages, so I'm kind of lost on the direction of the threads. rkbrasse just kind of pointed this one out to me, the magnanimous so-and-so... ;) )

:) My grandfather went to Carolina in 1932, and he was a pretty diehard fan, so there was no escaping the Tar Heel love. I remember watching games with him when Steve Hale was playing for Dean Smith. :hearts: So it was thrilling to see UNC win.

BUT... I must confess... and perhaps I'm committing an abomination here... I kinda wanted to see Duke go further. I dunno. I just like their team attitude a little better. For some reason, I can't get into the personalities of the Carolina team this year. :| I'm conflicted.

Roy's a good coach, but he isn't Coach K...Roy can't make something out of nothing...and that's about what UNC will have next year. Guys like Rayshawn Terry and Quentin Thomas will have to start, and they aren't even close to the calibur of those that they are replacing. The only guy who consistantly played and is coming back is David Noel, and he'll have to be the leader of the team.
It'll definitely be a time to regroup for the team. Good frosh class coming in, but they still won't be able to compete with Duke for the title next year. In fact, with Paul leaving, and Williams thinking of leaving WF, it may be a runaway for Duke next year.
Which is sad.

Randolph Chooses Uncertain Draft Prospects Over Duke

POSTED: 4:49 pm EDT June 21, 2005
UPDATED: 11:36 pm EDT June 21, 2005

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Just about everyone expected Shavlik Randolph to end up in the NBA when he arrived at Duke. Few figured he would try to get there like this.

In a decision that likely ends a disappointing college career marked by injuries and unfulfilled expectations, Randolph has chosen to stay in the NBA draft instead of returning for his senior season with the Blue Devils.

In an interview late Tuesday, the 6-foot-10 forward _ the owner of a six-point career scoring average _ said he met with assistant coach Steve Wojciechowski to inform him of his decision that afternoon. Tuesday was the deadline for underclassmen to remove their name from the draft and return to school provided they had not hired an agent.

Randolph said he has not hired an agent and that he was prepared for anything, whether that meant hearing his name called in the June 28th draft or trying to catch on with a team as an undrafted free agent.

"Obviously there's an element of uncertainty and doubt," Randolph said. "But there's an old saying that the reward is in the journey, and I'm a firm believer in that. I definitely know I've got one heck of a journey in front of me."

Randolph said he had worked out for five teams _ Charlotte, New Jersey, Boston, Washington and Orlando _ and said he decided to stay in the draft after performing better than he expected. He also didn't sound interested in a rule that could allow him to return to school if he is undrafted, does not hire an agent or receive any money.

"I'm not one to discount anything, but right now (going back to Duke) is not what my plan is," he said. "My plan is to play in the NBA."

Randolph said he will look into hiring an agent and hopes to work out for more teams before the draft. He also said he plans to earn his religion degree, saying he is six credits short of completing his coursework.

"His mother and I made him look us in the eye and promise he would get his degree," said Kenny Randolph, Shavlik's father. "As long as he had his degree, if (the NBA) was his decision, we backed it 100 percent. He went to college to get a degree."

Coach Mike Krzyzewski was unavailable for comment, athletics spokesman Jon Jackson said.

Randolph, a McDonald's All-American, was the jewel of a recruiting class that featured J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams in 2002. But while both Redick and Williams flourished _ both earned All-America honors from The Associated Press last season _ Randolph has averaged just 6.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocked shots in 92 games in his injury-plagued career.

His decision to enter the draft raised plenty of eyebrows. He wasn't invited to the NBA pre-draft camp in Chicago earlier this month, a good indicator of whether a player is even a blip on the radar for league prospects.

Chris Monter, who publishes an NBA draft newsletter five times a year and edits a Web site devoted to college basketball, said he didn't expect a team to draft Randolph.

"I would be waiting for the phone to ring after the draft and hoping someone would want to bring him in the summer league," Monter said.

Randolph had painted the decision to enter the draft as a way to evaluate his skills and get input from NBA teams. But his surprise declaration also fueled speculation that he was unhappy with his role at Duke, which returns six of its top eight players from last season's 27-6 Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championship squad.

The Blue Devils also add one of the nation's top recruiting classes, which includes 6-10 forward Josh McRoberts.

But Randolph said Tuesday night that rumors of him being unhappy at Duke are "just absolutely untrue."

Still, it's hard not to notice that Randolph _ the grandson of former North Carolina State great Ronnie Shavlik _ has never seemed to find his place in the Blue Devils' offense. He has rarely displayed the all-around game that he showed at nearby Broughton High School in Raleigh. Instead he bulked up from 215 pounds as a freshman to 240 as a junior to play mostly on the interior.

Injuries have hindered his development, beginning with left hip surgery after his freshman season. He played in all 37 games in 2003-04, averaging a modest 7 points while starting just 10 games for a Final Four team. Last season, Randolph missed four games with mononucleosis

Me too E.. They need a dose of reality... the toughest conference (physical and competition wise) in the country is nothing compared to the play of the NBA.. and the veterans just can't wait for the next group of "youngins" to come on in. I can imagine that someone like Shavlik will be eaten alive when he tries to take the ball inside. NCSU Basketball Player Called 'Illegal'
Eyewitness News Exclusive
ABC11 Eyewitness News

(10/11/05 - RALEIGH) - North Carolina State basketball player Gavin Grant may be deported as an illegal immigrant.
Eyewitness News has learned that Grant was detained last week by campus police and immigrations officials, amid allegations that he was smuggled into the country, from Jamaica, as a child.

Grant, a 6'7" sophomore forward, was projected as a starter this season. A high school teammate of former Wolfpack star Julius Hodge, Grant was rated one of the top prospects in the country before enrolling at NCSU.

Sources tell Eyewitness News that Grant will be taken to Atlanta for a hearing, then deported to Jamaica. NCSU athletic department sources say they're confident Grant will be able to play with the team this season.

Always nice to see our tax dollars supporting productive activities. In a state with one of the highest populations of illegal immigrants, we bust a student-athlete with no criminal background from (gasp!) Jamaica who came to the US when he was 10?

Well thank goodness the fine men and women of INS are on the job, 'round the clock, protecting all of us from all these dangerous illegals like Gavin Grant. As part of our homeland security efforts, I guess he was determined to be a terrorist threat to other ACC teams.

Always nice to see our tax dollars supporting productive activities. In a state with one of the highest populations of illegal immigrants, we bust a student-athlete with no criminal background from (gasp!) Jamaica who came to the US when he was 10?

Let's not be ugly, but how many illegal 10-year olds are in NC schools right now? Oh, that's right. They don't play ball for State.

Well UNC just survived a hell of a scare from the perennial powerhouse.... Gardner-Webb. 83-80, and only 'cause we scored with 2 seconds left.

Here's to winning more than 8 games!

Did anyone catch a glimpse of the Pack this weekend?

Turbulence
11-21-2005, 09:56 AM
I went to the Delaware game. Delaware wasn't a half bad team, but I still think the pack could have done better. Shooting from the floor, especially in the first half, and most especially behind the arc, was absolutely abysmal. Gavin Grant and Cedric Simmons saved the team...and Evtimov looked near worthless out on the court, for some reason. There is work to be done but overall it wasn't a bad game. They're still a very good team despite losing Hodge and Collins.

goalie33
11-21-2005, 10:36 AM
You say "losing Collins" like it matters.

The biggest positive for the Pack last night was that they stopped shooting threes when they couldn't make them. That didn't happen last year. Brackman is playing more aggressively with his back to the hoop, and Ben McCauley is already producing consistently at the rate of around a point per minute without forcing his game on top of the system or taking more than his share of the ball.

Gavin Grant needs to pass out of his drives.

In five games, I've only seen one trick shot and one trademark wackypass from Shoush.

Still, the Pack is playing well.

I swear to God, if the Heels would have gotten 20% of the offensive rebounds that they missed tonight, we would have won by 10 points. Total bull****. I think we hit like two three-pointers the entire night. To be down by 13 and then come back like that only to lose by 4... SsdfskjdalfjdsgsndlkgergeRKJDSGFGF (that was my frustration)

Night Train
11-30-2005, 12:32 AM
UNC played well, but when they have to count on rookies for that much of the offense, inconsistency should be expected.

I'd rather play them early in the year, rather than later on, after they get their stuff together.

Dick Vitale grates on me so much now that I listened to Woody Durham call the game while at the gym, and I'm a State grad.

tommy
11-30-2005, 12:59 AM
Well I've managed to calm down some, but I'm still a bit upset. I mean, before the game, if you would have told me that we'd be in it until the end and only lose by 4, I would have been pretty happy, but after the way it played out I was disappointed. Gotta work on those rebounds, especially offensive rebounds.

Stormbringer
11-30-2005, 01:26 PM
Considering that they were down 14 at one point, I thought the Heels played well overall. But, they certainly need to work on (offensive) rebounds AND free throws. Not to mention not turning over the ball so dang much...

ESPN wasn't so kind. They put us at 24.

And five games into the season, that's what a W over the #10 team will do (and a good game against a #11 team). Hey, at least we can break 50 points... :smoke:

goalie33

The fact that Kentucky is still #15 after losing twice is proof enough for me that those rankings are garbage.

As for 50 points...I never have been and never will be impressed by high scores in any sport. You can play great and score 49 points. You can play terrible and score 107.

Simply put, NC State is a much better team this year than they have been in years past. They've added a wrinkle of transition/athleticism to the standard offense while maintaining high percentage shots as the number one objective. The emergence of Simmons and Brackman (and McCauley, for that matter) is forcing teams to respect the inside on defense, leaving the perimeter open on many occasions. Couple that with the fact that four of the five starters are excellent three-point shooters, and you've got a damn potent offense. Atsur had NINE assists last night, and he's had a grand total of seven turnovers in the past SIX GAMES. On top of all that, State is No. 1 in the nation in FG% defense.

It's a good time to be a State student and basketball fan :).

BTW, one of State's recruits for next year, Dan Werner, was named the MVP of the US Challenge at Reynolds over the weekend, going 13-17 from the field and 5-6 from long distance. :D

NC State 87, Georgia Tech 78.

State moves to 14-2 and 3-1 in the ACC, but I have to share this hilarious in-game moment.

Some of you may know that GT's Theodis Tarver recently came back from being academically ineligible. I'm usually not a fan of the Student Wolfpack Club, but today they were quite brilliant. First, they wrote all the letters of the alphabet on pieces of paper and held them up, singing the alphabet song when Tarver came to the bench.

The papers were confiscated by RBC security, but then came the best part: during a timeout, coach Paul Hewitt was writing on a dry erase board in front of the team. Someone yelled, "Hey, can Tarver even read what you're writing?" At that point, Hewitt went bananas and ignored the team, turned around and started screaming at the student section, "F*** YOU, THAT'S JUST CLASSLESS," etc., and had to be restrained by his assistants. It was hilarious.

Note to Paul: We're NC State. We pride ourselves on being classless.

Wow.

Great game ...too bad Bethel made a huge mistake allowing the refs any opportunity to make that foul on the made three. It would've been real good down the stretch if not for the six-point swing that ensued.

Redick's awesome, too ... what a scorer. Reggie Miller v2.

Didn't you say you worked at Starbucks? When did they start serving the Tarheel Kool-Aid there? Your Heels have been very impressive early this year however I believe the grind of the ACC is beginning to wear on them. Consecutive losses to Miami and Virginia. Although you can throw out the record books when Duke and UNC play... I don't believe that the Heels have much of a chance this year against Duke. Granted they have a better chance than the 8-20 team had but not much better. Plus the Devils will be getting Demarcus Nelson back very soon...makes it that much more difficult. Good luck though...Go DUKE

Yes the vaunted Blue Devils lost to G'town. They lost due to shoddy defense. Maybe they will realize that they must play defense to win games. The only good thing about it is the loss is out of the way now and it was not in conference. God help VT and the rest of the ACC now that the boys can relax and not worry about an undefeated season.
