My dad told me he'd read over the weekend that Kevin Weekes was going to have to have surgery on his hand and that the LA game might have been his last this season. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
Also, if it's true, could this mean the return of Irbe?

Yes, he has surgery Wednesday. He may or may not start tomorrow. Irbe will be recalled when Weekes goes out for surgery.

It's as good a stretch as Weekes has put together all season, a cruel irony considering he has played the last month with a painful injury in his right hand that is going to require surgery sooner rather than later.
"It's a lot more serious than initially we thought," Weekes said. "It's more serious than I thought, more serious than the team thought and more serious than many of the players know.
"I've talked to the medical staff and the surgeon who is going to perform [the procedure], and I should be able to make a complete recovery and do something as simple as holding my stick again."
All of which means Tuesday's home game against the Ottawa Senators may well be his last of the season.
Weekes and the team won't disclose the specifics of the injury, but there's little hidden about the pain it causes him.
He can't hold his stick correctly. He can't play without pain-killing shots. He can't practice to full efficiency.

I guess the question now is, will Irbe start after the surgery or will they have him backup DeRochers?

I'd be very willing to bet that Irbe will backup DesRochers. But, it sounds like Irbe has be doing pretty good in his games for Lowell lately, so it's hard to say who will start and backup...

We're only playing two playoff teams in that final stretch so it's hard to say. I don't see any reason why they shouldn't start DesRochers against teams like Buffalo, Montreal, Pittsburgh, Florida, and Atlanta. What is there to lose?

not much, Id like to see DeRoscher play a few games, he did well in that back to back stint, give him like 5 or 6 straight, see how he does, ya know, what is there to lose?

Yeah, we have 9 games left, and I'd like to see DesRochers start at least 7 of them.
You gotta feel sorry for Irbe, though. With the years he's put in here and the ties he has to this organization...sad to see he's nearing the end of his career. He'll be missed.

This was the prime time for Weekes to go in to. No point waiting until the end of the season. Have surgery now and totally heal...I am excited though, if he can make 3 shutouts with a hand problem, hopefully that means he'll be unbelievable when 100%.

GREAT POINT! I was hoping that he could have done that a little earlier in the season and we would be in the thick of a playoff run, but with Bayda, Zigomanis, St. Jacques and the rest of the boys up from Lowell, you can't help but feel excited about next year. Let's just hope they can move Irbe and get something in return in the off-season.

Now you all know I'm an Irbe fan, but I'm also a Canes fan first. For the good of the team, I agree with this. I hope we can get a 4-6th d-man or a role playing winger. Unfortunately in this case, we didn't trade him when we could, so other teams won't offer much. We shall see.

well, on the other side of the coin, any of the few teams that made netminder moves strictly for the playoffs, may be looking for a goalie again come the off season. I still don't think the likelihood of Irbe moving with his current contract are good... but I think JR is getting close to saying he'll pickup some of the salary just to move him.
