wow, talk about a battle of netminders!!! what more could you ask for??
Turco vs Giggy. these games should be mind-blowing... if the 'tenders play like they have been.
I have to say I wouldn't mind seeing the Ducks move on.... but, it's definitely the Stars series to lose. I like the stars too... so I won't really be pulling for either team (all my energy will go into the philly series. lol)... but it's gonna be a helluva matchup.

I think this will be the best series of this round of the playoffs. Will Anaheim be rusty after their long layoff? I'm pulling for Dallas as they are my adopted Western Conferece team. If Guerin can play anywhere near 100% (and Giguere is not Ken Dryden reincarnated), Dallas should win in.....6

I'd like to see the Ducks move on, but Dallas is so big and physical that I think it will be difficult for the Ducks to win the series.
If both goaltenders play up to their abilities, it should make for not to be missed games.

Well, I'm gonna have to be different and pull for Anaheim. I really don't have a preference on who I want to win, but I have to pull for someone or the games just aren't exciting.

I'll be pulling for the Ducks as well in this one. If Ruchin and friends can do to Modano and company what they did to Fedorov, Hull, etc. and Giguere can keep up his solid, solid play this series may have a surprising finish to it!

Gotta pull for the Stars myself, and i feel pretty confident they'll take it. I honestly don't think the Ducks have it in them again. An excellent first line and a goaltender who is hot as molten lava right now, but i have a feeling the rain's gonna come and cool it all down this round.

Lemieux fires first salvo against Giguere

The Dallas Stars have fired the first psychological salvo in their second round series against the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
Several players and team officials are openly complaining about the size of goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere's equipment. Attention appears to be focused not so much on his pads but rather his shoulder pads and pants.
"They're too big," said Dallas winger Claude Lemieux. "I don't know what the regulations are or whatever, but his pads are way too big. It almost looks like two pads on top of each other."
No one was questioning Giguere's equipment before he backstopped the Ducks to a four game sweep of the Detroit Red Wings. For his part, Giguere isn't getting into the verbal war of words.
"My pads are legal. That's all I have to say about that," Giguere said. "The game is played on the ice, not outside. If that's how they want to play, I'm not going to get involved."
Ducks forward Steve Thomas says Lemieux is simply "stirring the pot".
"We don't want it to become a war of words in the media," said Thomas. "We're about going out there, executing our game plan and playing good hockey."

Wait until you watch him in action Mona. He's the type that watches the referees.. once they look away, he'll board you or punch you or slash you. When ESPN asked for letters for who was the dirtiest in ALL sports, not just hockey, he came in 7th. You saw that picture of Draper, right?
The best insight into Lemieux's dirty, dark, shriveled soul was the Kris Draper incident. He ran Draper into the boards in a premeditated fashion, then laughed about it. Seventy-six stitches later, Draper stopped bleeding. This incident puts into perspective all the pathetic wailing about supposedly dirty hits in the current playoffs.
In light of Lemieux-Draper, it's funny to hear all the fuss over the Gary Roberts and Jeff O'Neill hits, which looked reasonable to me. I suspect that if Claude hit someone as hard and dirty as he hit Draper that night, the ESPN booth crew might actually wet its pants.
Perhaps the best measure of dirtiness is peer evaluation. To quote Dino Ciccarelli on Lemieux after that fateful Detroit-Colorado series: "I can't believe I shook his freakin' hand."
He is not an enforcer though, as he will lay some dirty hits but turtles when someone wants to drop the gloves with him.. well, then he goes and scores. Lemieux ranks around No. 100 in regular season scoring, but No. 7 in playoff scoring. Only Wayne Gretzky and Brett Hull have scored more game winners in the postseason than Lemieux. *bleh*

I'm pulling for the underdogs. I think that Anaheim proved that they have what it takes to advance in the playoffs, despite that many people thought that they would be an easy sweep for Detroit. IMO, although this kills me to say, is that the better team won the Wings-Ducks series.

Thank you for not being the prototypical playoff loser. Not many would say that...
But I digress.
As much as I'm pulling for the Quack, I have a feeling the Stars'll take this one...though not easily. Anaheim reminds me a bit of Minnesota, and they have a good scorer in Kariya and an awesome goalie on SeaBass.(Isn't that what they call him?) Stars are the best team in the playoffs right now....Stars in 6. It's Dallas' conference and Cup to lose right now. Turco is unstoppable.

It's the truth though. The Wings stunk up the ice and the Ducks took advantage of that.
But I also think that Dallas will win this series. But who knows, I thought that Colorado would win and look what happened...
On a side note this comment from Lemieux makes me laugh

Okay Claude, if you don't know the regulations then basically you are talking out of your butt. He just continues to amuse me with his stupidity. And he also will probably be warming the bench since he is such a liability.

huh, I didn't know what Giggy's stats were like during the regular season against the Stars. Guess he'll have to make ammends if they're going anywhere.
GAME: Anaheim Mighty Ducks at Dallas Stars.
PLAYOFF SERIES: Western Conference semifinal; Game 1.
TIME: Thursday, 7:30 p.m. EDT.
Jean-Sebastien Giguere led the Anaheim Mighty Ducks to a stunning sweep of the Detroit Red Wings by convincingly outplaying his counterpart. For the Ducks to pull off another upset, he'll have to do it again.
Giguere leads the upstart Mighty Ducks against the top-seeded Dallas Stars when the teams open their West semifinal series at the American Airlines Center.
No one expected the seventh-seeded Ducks to have a chance to beat the defending Stanley Cup champions in the opening round, much less sweep them. But Anaheim completed the shocking four-game victory with a 3-2 overtime win April 16.
Steve Rucchin scored 6:53 into the extra period to propel the Ducks into the semifinals in their first playoff appearance in three years.
"Let's be honest, if it wasn't for J.S. Giguere, we wouldn't be in this situation," Rucchin said. "It's tough for us to take credit when they were so dominant at times in this series and just threw everything they had at him -- and he just shut them down." The 25-year-old Giguere has continued his breakout season in the playoffs.
After going 34-22-6 with eight shutouts and a 2.30 goals-against average during the regular season, he stopped 165 of 171 shots and posted a 1.24 GAA against the Red Wings.
Giguere set the tone for the series in the opener with 63 saves in a 2-1, triple-overtime victory.
That is very different from his two starts against Dallas this season. The Ducks goalie was 0-2 with a 4.80 GAA and was chased in both.
"It's another chance for me to learn against another great team, get some more playoff experience," Giguere said of the matchup with the Stars. "I don't think they will take us lightly." There's probably no chance of Dallas doing that after Giguere was better than playoff-tested Red Wings goalie Curtis Joseph. The Stars know they'll need goaltender Marty Turco, who looked shaky at times during their first-round victory over Edmonton, to match the red-hot Giguere if they want to avoid a similar fate.
Turco, playing in his first postseason series, was good enough to get the Stars past the Oilers in six games. But he gave up a few soft goals, and those could be costly against the Ducks if Giguere continues his dominant play.
The Stars, though, will present Anaheim's goalie with a different look and challenge in this series. Dallas' offensive style revolves around crashing the net with its big forwards, a strategy Anaheim didn't see a lot of from Detroit.
Dallas forwards Mike Modano, Jason Arnott, Brenden Morrow and Scott Young will almost certainly attempt to screen and crowd Giguere in an attempt to get him out of his rhythm.
The Stars may also get reinforcements up front, as Pierre Turgeon and Bill Guerin could return from injuries in this series. Arnott, who missed Game 6 with an injury, is expected to be in the lineup Thursday.
Modano and defenseman Sergei Zubov carried the depleted Stars offensively in the first round, with each recording four goals and six assists to tie for the NHL lead with 10 points in the postseason.
"Mike is expected to step up, but so did others," Stars coach Dave Tippett said. "When you are missing key people, you have to make up the difference." Anaheim may have a tough time getting to the net against a big and mobile Stars defense led by Zubov, Derian Hatcher and Darryl Sydor, so the Mighty Ducks may need star captain Paul Kariya to rediscover his scoring touch.
Anaheim relied on a balanced attack against Detroit, with seven players scoring goals, but the Ducks managed only 10 goals in the four games. Kariya was limited to two goals and no assists by Detroit.
Game 2 will be Saturday in Dallas.
HOW THEY GOT HERE: Mighty Ducks - 7th seed; beat Detroit Red Wings 4-0, quarterfinals. Stars - 1st seed; beat Edmonton Oilers 4-2, quarterfinals.
PLAYOFF TEAM LEADERS: Mighty Ducks - Stanislav Chistov, 2 goals; Rob Niedermayer, 3 assists; Chistov and Niedermayer, 3 points; Ruslan Salei, 8 PIM.
Stars - Modano, Zubov and Young, 4 goals; Modano, Zubov and Sydor, 6 assists; Modano and Zubov, 10 points; Hatcher, 29 PIM.
PLAYOFF SPECIAL TEAMS: Mighty Ducks - Power play: 0.0 percent (0 for 14).
Penalty killing: 85.7 percent (2 for 14). Stars - Power play: 17.9 percent (7 for 39). Penalty killing: 95.7 percent (22 for 23).
GOALTENDERS: Mighty Ducks - Giguere (4-0, 1.24 GAA); Martin Gerber (no appearances). Stars - Turco (4-2, 1.84); Ron Tugnutt (no appearances).
REGULAR SEASON SERIES: Stars, 3-1-1. Gerber was the goaltender that Dallas had trouble against, as he went 1-1-1 with a 1.68 GAA in the series. Turco went 3-0-1 with a 1.02 GAA in four starts.

huh, I didn't know what Giggy's stats were like during the regular season against the Stars.

Uh, they do understand that he FAILED that test last year, right? ;)
Good luck Giguere! I hope you can keep it up against the Stars....but it's likely to be a whole lot harder.

You got all that right, hyena. Giguere has been tested and tested again and he has showed he is up to the challenge. I LOVE to watch him play. He is so calm it's amazing.
When they came back to Pang and Levy for the 4th OT they explained why the goal was waved off. Mr SHC talked through it but we think that Pang agreed with the call. Did you guys hear if Pang did indeed agree? I saw the replay again and still don't.

I'm actually starting to fear for these guy's health. They all have to be about to drop. And Giguere had to have IV fluids after the 3OT with Detroit....he must be about half dead by now! Maybe they should look into making the OTs 10 minutes long or something. This is getting insane.

I think the longest ever was a 5OT Flyers/Penquins game. But I'm not sure how far into the 5OT it went. Looks like we're gonna be pushing that record at least. I think I'm about to move upstairs to watch the rest of the game from bed. Luckily I can take the laptop with me so I can still come celebrate when the Ducks win. :D

I love you guys. Even when I konk out and miss it all (fell asleep after the 3rd period - that's what I get when I decide to watch it in bed), coming here and reading your play by play is so much fun!
This morning I turned on ESPNews and saw the score with 5OT on the crawler and almost felt as bad for y'all as I did for the players, lol! I saw that it looked like some of the crowd had to pack it in before it was finally over. I guess ESPN got a great number of sleeping fans in the stand shots for future use!
Hope everyone is still snoozing away! :spin:

Murray phoned league officials after the third overtime to plead his case.

Damn! So none of us here in NC will be able to see game 2 right? That really stinks, it should be a really good game. But hopefully so will the Bolts/Devils game!
I'm SO glad the Ducks ended up winning. Throughout the remainder of the third overtime, the following intermission, the fourth overtime, and the subsequent intermission, and into the fifth round I just kept thinking about what a load of crap disallowing that goal was...... I really liked what the commentator said about it perhaps being a bit of justice for the Ducks to win. Made me feel MUCH better!

I thought for sure that he would say the opposite, figuring that he predicts/wants the Stars to take this series. Actually, the more I think about it, I don't know what'a more amazing...Melrose actually saying something good towards the Ducks or my agreeing with him on something.

Definitely the longest game I've ever watched. Guess Giggy is hooked up to the IV today, huh? Crappy not to get to see game 2.
