Hurricanes Re-Sign Winger Daniels
Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. -Veteran left wing Jeff Daniels re-signed with the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday, agreeing to a one-year contract worth $300,000.

Daniels, who will be 35 in June, is one of the team's top penalty killers and has filled in on the third and fourth lines in six previous seasons with the Hurricanes.

Daniels had no goals and four assists in 59 games this past season and has 43 points in 425 career games with Pittsburgh, Florida, Nashville and Carolina.

It was Carolina's first major signing since the end of the regular season. Daniels could have become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

The club waited until August to re-sign Daniels in three previous years. But with a younger team slated to begin the 2003-04 season, Carolina assistant general manager Jason Karmanos said the franchise couldn't afford to lose Daniels' leadership on and off the ice.

Daniels said he and the team had talked about a spring signing this time around.

"They told me they weren't going to leave me hanging and they were true to their word," Daniels said. "Every summer I went into it with the same approach and hoped it would work out and it did. I'll still work hard this summer. This doesn't change anything."

Great news!
JD is a class act...and is invaluble to this team. He'll be scratched in quite a few games...but he fills a niche that nobody else can. He's one of the best penalty killers on the team....and a steady veteran that all of these young guns can look up to.
I'm very happy that we could resign him!

Excellent news! I love JD. He's great on the PK, and someone some of the younger guys can look up to. He quietly does his roll, and doesn't complain. Basicly, I agree with Turby. ;)

Yeah...the title @ CH.com fooled me into posting about my being happy that JD "resigned" as opposed to "re-signed" too. But, now I know and will post better... :)

Anyway, basically what everyone else has said. Plus, now that it's official that Ronnie and JD will be back, let's now work on re-signing Erik Cole.
