HURRICANES TO PURSUE FEDOROV?
NEW YORK POST: Larry Brooks reports the Detroit Red Wings apparently aren't confident about their chances of re-signing impending UFA forward Sergei Fedorov, who earlier this season rejected a five-year, $50 million US offer. Brooks claims the Carolina Hurricanes, who had Fedorov signed to an offer sheet as a restricted free agent in 1998 before the Wings matched the offer, may pursue Fedorov in the UFA market. Brooks cites the 'Canes previous attempt to sign Fedorov, as well as the antagonism between Hurricanes owner Peter Karmonos and Red Wings owner Mike Illich, adding Karmonos would do this signing not only to improve his club, but to get back at Illich.
Spector's Note: Anything's possible, but that was then and this is now. The Hurricanes tried to sign Feds to a six-year, $36 million US contract, which would be a bargain in today's NHL market for a player of his calibre. If Fedorov is seeking five years at $12 mil per season as speculated, there's no way the Hurricanes, who are in a cost-cutting mode and have to deal with the intricacies of extricating themselves from Arturs Irbe's contract, won't be able to out-bid the free-spending NY Rangers, or for that matter, the Red Wings.
WESLEY UNDECIDED ABOUT HIS FUTURE.
RALEIGH NEWS & OBSERVER: Luke Decock reports defenceman Glen Wesley, who waived his no-trade clause with the Carolina Hurricanes in February for a chance to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs, is undecided as to whom he'll sign with next season. The Leafs thought highly of Wesley's play and are believed interested in re-siging him, but Wesley says he's leaving open the option of returning to the Hurricanes. The determining factor to where he'll end up will be the length of the contract being offered. Most NHL teams are gun-shy over offering long-term contracts to UFAs this summer, given the uncertainty over the league's future going into the next round of labour negotiations in September 2004.
Spector's Note: My thanks to "Garbage" for sending this in. If the Leafs wanna keep Wesley, they'll have to offer up a contract that extends beyond the end of the '03-'04 season. Toronto should be able to out-bid Carolina, as the 'Canes were unable to reach an agreement with Wesley on an extension prior to the March trade deadline, but obviously one shouldn't rule out the possibility of his returning to the Hurricanes if they, rather than the Leafs, are willing to go with a long-term deal.

I'm very willing to bet and hope that the signing of Fedorov won't happen. There's no way on Earth the Canes will be able to afford the guy both financially and chemically. Though I would love to have a scorer like Fedorov on the Canes, his supposed attitude wouldn't do their locker room chemistry any good...
Now Wesley returning I have not given up hope for...as I've said before, the only free agent with a possible longterm contract I expect the Canes to go for will be Wes. Here's to hoping his return becomes true while the rumors of him wanting to stay in Toronto remain rumors.

In the article about Wesley (http://newsobserver.com/hurricanes/story/2490067p-2314217c.html)
It says:
Only Rod Brind'Amour, Bret Hedican, Arturs Irbe and Aaron Ward have significant contracts that extend beyond next season.
I can assume that is a typo yeah?? Irbe's contract is done after next season isn't it??

Shell...I thought they just upped Irbe's contract the first time they played NJD in the playoffs. He makes something like 5 million still. I assume that will be for more than 1 year...

O we sure could use a good scorer like that.....but not only would it add to the glut we have at center, but we would add another Primeau-eske attitude to the team, which we obviously don't need in our locker room. If we're going to add someone of that calibur I'd rather that we add a high profile left winger (any on the market?) or, more importantly, a high calibur Defenseman.
We could use his scoring....but we don't really need it if we have 5 good NHL centers. I'd rather we concentrate our minds and our money on getting a solid defenseman or two, or perhaps a quality left Wing to suppliment Bayda/DeFauw/Kurka and friends...
Besides....I really don't think we're in the financial position to lure Sergei here. He'd be much happier with the Rangers...

I thought it was just a two year contract for 5 something, 2 and change per year. This past season and next season?
As far as picking people up, I don't see any big names coming here with the payroll pare down  Derian Hatcher on defense would be OK though!! His 30 points, +37 self is unrestricted after this year. Desjardins is also an unrestricted defenseman. For Left Wing Andreychuk or Arvedson wouldn't be too bad.
Andreychuk is due for a raise, making only 850,000.

Though Andreychuk is a good, veteran LW, he isn't exactly a spring chicken...he was born in 1963...and so was Ron Francis. If we can pick up Arvedsson from Ottawa we should....he is a high calibur player born in '71, so he has some good years left.
I still think we'll be OK next year with the forewards and goaltending we have already...Defense is our main concern. We don't need to drop $10 mil per year on a player we don't need...especially one with an attitude.

You'd have about as much chance of prying Andreychuk away from Tampa as you'd have prying Ronnie Francis out of here. I just don't think it will happen.

didn't he reject a 5 year $50 million contract with the Wings? think there's ANY chance he'll be offered something more here?
I hope there's no chance. He would not be a good fit IMO and I hope he stays far away.

I really am not sure where he'll end up. I know it won't be here, but I think a lot of teams are in danger mode right now, not wanting to sign someone to a multiyear contract that extends beyond the CBA. Knowing that, players can't demand as much as they would've previously. In that case, it gives smaller teams a chance at better talent. That's not to say we would still have a chance at Feds, but possibly someone to bolster our blue line or the sniper/offensive threat we so sorely need.

I can't find the link but to either the Detroit Free Press or the News, Fedorov said he wanted longer than 5 years. He said that it wasn't about the amount but about the time. But who knows what he's going to do. He didn't exactly prove in the playoffs he should be given a contract longer than 5 years at 10 million a season.

So is Detroit I am sure..
It appears unlikely a deal will get done with potential unrestricted free agent Sergei Fedorov before the start of the playoffs, when general manager Ken Holland declines to negotiate. "I talk to my agent maybe once or twice a week, and nothing is happening right now," Fedorov said. "I'd like to get it done, but if something does not happen, I'll still feel fine. Loyalties are there. I don't see myself anywhere else." Holland offered $50 million over five years before Fedorov changed agents in January, and $10 million annually remains the starting point. Fedorov, however, said, "It's not so much money this time. It's more how many years -- hopefully five or six."

But without mentioning Fedorov by name, Karmanos said he isn't interested in any contracts going beyond the 2003-04 season. Only Rod Brind'Amour, Hedican, Aaron Ward and Irbe have contracts that extend beyond that now.
"I want to make sure if there's a significant change in the CBA that we haven't tied our hands going forward," Karmanos said. "We have to be pretty careful. For example, there's a star center who may become a free agent who wants a five- or six-year contract, a multimillion-dollar contract. As much as we'd like to, we're not going to do that."

Carolina Hurricanes General Manager Jim Rutherford made it clear on Sunday that he and team owner Peter Karmanos have no plans at this point to sign 'big-money free-agents.'
A report in the New York Post on Sunday claimed sources close to the Detroit Red Wings thought the Canes would go after Sergei Fedorov when he becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1.
"I don't think there's any chance," Rutherford told the Raleigh News Observer. "Based on my talks with Pete, money is too tight. I just don't see it."
The paper noted that the exception could be Glen Wesley, the former Carolina defenseman who was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in March. Wesley, third all-time in games played for the Carolina franchise, will reportedly consider returning to the Hurricanes in July if the Leafs don't re-sign him.
Fedorov rejected the Red Wings' offer of a five-year, $50 million contract during the season.
Karmanos, without mentioning Fedorov by name, said last month that there would be no repeat of 1998, when the Canes signed Fedorov, a restricted free agent, to an offer sheet worth $38 million.
"We have to be pretty careful," Karmanos told the News Observer. "For example, there's a star center who may become a free agent who wants a five or six-year contract, a multimillion-dollar contract. As much as we'd like to, we're not going to do that."

something's gonna have to give.
And that's how the Rangers will corner the market and come out of the CBA like the Yankees...

I would like to see the Canes get someone this free agency. They didn't have a good season, and I would like them to get someone high profile out there.

I hear all of you...
I just don't think it will happen...
Wish I knew what they were spending their money on...

Mark my words..... Fedorov will get his money and become like most of the guys who go to the Rangers, float around and collect their cheques. Remember the season he had after he won the Hart? He disappeared! He had his hardware and his big money contract, and didn't need to put forth much effort. This past season he played well, but not spectacular, but he WAS in the final year of his contract. Next season he will regress to that mind set again. JMHO, but I think it's qualified.
