Head coach...awesome! I guess this means Cole, Kevyn, and Cullen have an even greater shot to make the Olympic squad on the last two lines...

Well Coach sounded very thrilled and excited to be named Team USA's coach- they talked about his time on the Olympic teams in the past, and his last few years during the WC of Hockey and the World Championships and how much of an honor it is to represent your country- seemed really humbled by it all.

He talked a bit about Canes training camp and how he's been musing on the line combos and PP and PK pairings, etc. and how he's ready to get it going. Seemed very anxious and you could hear the enthusiasm about everything.

He's scheduled to do a press conference at 7pm at the RBC Center and I see ESPN has it scrolling that he was named head coach, so I imagine there will be some press about it somewhere.......

Great thing for Coach and for the Canes.......

He so deserves it. I was very impressed with what he did with our team in the short time he had plus what he did in the Worlds. This makes me even more excited to start this darn season (as if I wasn't excited enough already)

Coach Lav was just on 4 Quarters on ESPN. He talked about how excited he was for Hurricanes camp b/c it will be the first time he's gotten to start a camp and lay out his style.

I know he said more, and hopefully others can add, but I had a screaming 5 month old ready for bed.

Coach's vow: Only the best for U.S. team

BY BOB FOLTMAN
Published December 13, 2005

RALEIGH, N.C. -- This isn't the part of the country one would expect to visit to take the pulse of the U.S. Olympic hockey team.

USA Basketball? Sure, new U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski is right up the road at Duke.

But the man in charge of guiding the American hockey team in Turin is busy with his day job in Raleigh.

U.S. coach Peter Laviolette also is the architect of one of the NHL's surprising teams. His Carolina Hurricanes lead the Southeast Division with an 18-9-2 record.

When he isn't worrying or focusing on his Hurricanes, which is seldom, he's trying to figure out which NHL players will give the U.S. the best chance to win a gold medal for the first time since 1980.

"You notice players when they are on the opposing team," Laviolette said. "It's easier to notice them when they play really well or when they play really poorly. When they play an average game, it's harder to pick them out because you're worried about your own team."

The U.S. will announce its roster Monday, and Laviolette said that while most of the decisions are set, a few choices remain.

After a disappointing semifinal loss to Finland in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, a U.S. team in transition to younger players might be expected. But Laviolette said that's not necessarily the case.

"I think that somehow gets misinterpreted," he said. "I believe we're taking the best players, the players who have played the best to this point in the season."

Two players unlikely to be selected are former stalwart Blackhawks, defenseman Chris Chelios and center Jeremy Roenick.

Laviolette said the beginning of the NHL season has served as a tryout for players to make the team, but he also said most of the same faces who were at the Olympic camp in Colorado Springs last summer would be on the team.

But there also likely will be some new faces, such as Lightning goaltender John Grahame, who has had a strong first half of the season, and Kings center Craig Conroy.

Another U.S. team fixture who wasn't invited to Colorado Springs but may end up in Turin is former Hawk Tony Amonte. After scoring just three goals in his first 18 games with the Flames, Amonte has five in his last 13 and has attracted the attention of Laviolette and U.S. general manager Don Waddell.

The bulk of the team likely will come from the Colorado Springs group, headed by Mike Modano, Keith Tkachuk, Rick DiPietro and Brian Gionta, because they were able to practice together for an extended period. Teams will get one practice session in Turin before the competition starts. Laviolette won't have much time to implement any systems.

"You can say it's not fair, but everyone has to do the same thing, so it's fair for everyone," he said.

Team selection has flown under the radar in the U.S., unlike in Canada, where the daily ruminations of the squad Wayne Gretzky puts together are rivaled only by the constant debate over how NHL games are officiated.

One person squarely in the Canadian debate is someone with whom Laviolette is very familiar--Hurricanes center Eric Staal, tied for sixth in the NHL in scoring with 21 goals and 42 points.

"[Canada] has a lot of tough decisions to make," Laviolette said. "In my opinion, [Staal has] played well enough to make that team."

Staal said he and Laviolette had talked about being on opposite sides of the ice in Turin.

"[Laviolette] said the silver medal would look good in my closet," Staal said. "I beg to differ with that one. That would be neat, for sure, as long as my team won."

As for the D- Hedican needs to be on this list- I mean if we have Hatcher-(e.g. big lumbering d-man) why do we need Hal Gill too????

Although hockey is huge around here, there are only a handful of guys who have made it to the NHL from Central New York. It is very encouraging to see 3 (Cole, Connolly, and Esche) of the 4 on the list. :spin: The only one missing is the Red Wings' rookie goalie, Howard. I hope all 3 make the team and are able to represent us in Italy.

Nice comments on Lavi in Scott Burnside's latest column (the same column where he leaves all Canes but Cole off the U.S. and Canadian teams):

Not surprisingly, the Americans will try and replicate the style of hockey that has made Laviolette's Carolina Hurricanes one of the pleasant surprises of the NHL season.

Using a ferocious forecheck, the Southeast Division-leading Canes have pressured opponents into mistakes from the start of the season, while a quick-strike transition game has allowed them to capitalize on neutral-zone turnovers.

"They play a great transition game and they jam it right down your throat," Toronto Maple Leafs senior scout Craig Button said. "Peter Laviolette deserves a great deal of credit for their transition game. It's 2-on-1, 3-on-1, they're coming."

The U.S. team will try and do likewise.
