I'm tweaking a PowerPoint presentation I have to give tomorrow afternoon and my computer just locked up (please no PC vs MAC chiding right now, I don't have a choice on this one) and I lost about 4 slides plus a few other changes.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get them back? And can you explain how to a total computer idiot? I can get back lost files with Word once in a while but my tiny bit of knowledge isn't working here.

This presentation is the equivalent of a doctoral thesis for me so it's kinda important. Not that I couldn't do the slides over, but I liked them the way they were and I can't quite remember all the details.

TIA for any help anyone can provide. Meanwhile, I'll just sit here and steam and try to remember what I'd changed.

Helluva birthday today turned out to be.

not to assume too much, but you did check the temp folder, right?

did you shut it off completely when it locked, or did it eventually come back?

use linux ;) (hey you said no pc/mac banter :p )

but seriously, turn on view hidden files and check the folder where your presentation is saved. if you see a funny name wiht symbols try to open it.

Sorry....got a phone call.

I already did the hidden files thing and no luck.

It was saved on my desktop. Had to shut-down my computer completely. And I am running Windows 98, FYI.

See, I knew there was a temp folder but I went looking and all I can find is "temporary internet files." Where is the sucker supposed to be?

You can never assume too much with me. There are some things I know about computers that might make me sound like I know something but the vast holes in my knowledge are unreal.

Oh, and :p to puck_it. ;)

Thanks guys!

OK, think I found the temp folder and no, it's not there.

Well, I think I can honestly say this is the first time I have ever lost work on my computer. Figures it would happen now, lol.

I guess I'll get to work figuring out what I had changed and added. Damn. If I weren't so un-organized maybe I'd have more of a record of what I do, huh?

Thanks for the help anyway!

A little late, and probably wouldn't help you on Win 98, as I'm not sure what they had on 98 for Search function, but:

I would (Win XP) do Start->Search->All Files and Folders, pick "Local Hard Drives" for the "Look in" field, make sure "system folders", "hidden files and folders" and "subfolders" checkboxes were selected, then pick the dropdown for "When was it modified" and specify the date that you last worked on it (today, yesterday, etc.) and click "Search". Then Windows would do all the heavy lifting and show you every single file it may have saved no matter where (windows temp directory, application temp directory, whatever).

That's saved me a couple times when I forgot where I put a file I knew I changed and had an idea of what date I saved it.

Thanks for the info! And 98 does have that feature cause I did that....didn't work. Didn't matter though because I have now officially passed (and even made an A on) my Doctoral Presentation. :D :spin: Woo hoo!
