Buddy of mine sent me an e-mail saying he'd heard the Canes had scheduled a press conference for 3pm today. There nothing about it on ch.com, though.
Can anyone else confirm/deny this?

I'm surprised Stillman got one over Whitney, given Whitney's past ... sounds like they really want to make Stillman feel like he's a huge part of what they want to do here from the get-go.
Wonder if The Eye will swap out the "A" on my Brindy jersey for a "C" for free :D

I suppose the second alternate will be rotated between Adams and Stillman, because the rulebook says you can only have two.
Rule 14 Captain of Team
(a) One Captain shall be appointed by each Team, and he alone shall have the privilege of discussing with the Referee any questions relating to interpretation of rules which may arise during the progress of a game. He shall wear the letter "C", approximately three inches (3'') in height and in contrasting color, in a conspicuous position on the front of his sweater.
In addition, if the permanent Captain is not on the ice, Alternate Captains (not more than two) shall be accorded the privileges of the Captain. Alternate Captains shall wear the letter "A" approximately three inches (3'') in height and in contrasting color, in a conspicuous position on the front of their sweaters.
(NOTE) Only when the captain is not in uniform, the Coach shall have the right to designate three Alternate Captains. This must be done prior to the start of the game.
(b) The Referee and Official Scorer shall be advised prior to the start of each game, the name of the Captain and the Alternate Captains of both Teams.

Nothing against Stillman, but he has yet to don a Canes jersey (other than his press conference) or play a game, and he gets an A? The other guys who got the letters seem to me to have earned them-- and Stillman gets it over Hedican or one of the younger guys who have proved themselves. Doesn't seem right to me. I always thought of wearing the "C" or an "A" as something one earns. Oh well..

Leadership != tenure, imo. I am a bit surprised to see that they're going to roatate between 3...but it's an interesting idea. And I'm sure Stillman will bring alot to the table, on and off the ice. It's obvious that he wans to be a part of this team and believes in it.
I think the other three choices we all saw coming, though. Good choices.

As a general rule, it's best to have two forwards on different lines as captains and a high-minute defensemen as the third, so the probability is high that a captain will be on the ice at all times.

Perhaps there was a decision to include a "new" member of the roster in the Captaincy. There are a ton of new guys (Kaberle, Tvedovsky, Commodore, Cullen, Whitney, Stillman) and if this is another step in the Canes evolution in roster and style, then I'm all for it. I think it makes sense to select someone that is not from the Mo/Francis era as well as the great 3 guys that *are* holdovers.
I think Stillman was underappreciated in Tampa in the shadow of Vinny and Marty and the rest and it seems like the Canes are starting off from Day 1 to give Stillman every chance to be a leader and valued (no trade clause, "A") and I hope it serves both him and the Canes well. I guess we'll see.

While praising the way Francis carried out his duties, Brind'Amour promised to be a little different.
"I think this is a lot of responsibility," he said. "It's about how you act on and off the ice. You move people by your actions, not your words. I think I'm just a little more hard-nosed."

Rod picked up an "A" pretty quickly on his arrival from Philly. This also has much to do with tenure and the respect you've earned amoung peers in the league, not just time with your current team.
As much as I enjoyed Hill when he was a 'Cane, he has been a relatively inconsistent player - aside from his time in Carolina.
These are excellent choices for our team.

I never said the Canes were obligated to give Stillman an A b/c he won the Cup ... I said that's how he "earned" the right to be considered. You said it was something that needed to be earned. The fact that he was a key part in a Stanley Cup run gives him plenty of credentials.

I like the choices- especially the C going to Brindy.... well deserved and I like the way the team's demeanor changed post Francis trade and I attribute that to the Brindy factor. And I liked Brindy's comments that he'll be a different leader than #10. :D

Not to start a thread of the same old dribble, but, did it torque anyone else that the home team names a new captain, one whom everyone agrees is a dedicated, disciplined and deserving of this honor, and what happens? Our local "hockey writer" has the day off and the story gets buried in a staff note in the sports section.
Sorry, the "teaser" on the top of the page doesn't cut it. This was worthy of front page coverage...even below the fold would have been fine.

I'd rather it be in the back amidst the National Lacrosse League scores than have to read a Caulton Tudor front-page report on it.
But you're 100% right, Esbee.

I thought the same thing.

No kidding.
Would have been nice to include a photo of all 4 of them and maybe a few more quotes. But page 8 with a few paragraphs and no photo is what we should probably expect.

Brind'Amour earning respect
By SUN STAFF
テつ* (This is Part 20 in a series of Team
テつ*Canada hockey profiles which will appear daily in the Sun leading up to the Winter Olympics, which begin this weekend in Nagano)
テつ*
テつ*Until comic Rodney Dangerfield became rich and famous out of gettin' no respect, it was fashionable to compare guys like Rod Brind'Amour to him.
テつ*It no longer applies. But maybe a comparison to the younger, hardly known Dangerfield is apt. The Dangerfield one step ahead of the neighbor's rottweiler, one step short of the last bus.
テつ*Brind'Amour leads the league in trade rumors. He's had a greater variety of mates on his line than the chorus line of the Ice Capades. One stride away from greatness, one stride away from anonymity, here he is, a member of the Canadian Olympic team.
テつ*The Philadelphia centre/winger came out of Michigan State to make the NHL all-rookie team with St. Louis off a 26-goal, 61-point season in 1989-90. He played in the 1992 all-star game but it didn't quell what would be the start of unsettling trade rumors.
テつ*And more than rumors. When the Blues signed Brendan Shanahan, Brind'Amour and Curtis Joseph were offered as compensation (New Jersey got Scott Stevens).
テつ*Eventually, he was traded to the Flyers, but that didn't end the uncertainty. From standing in as captain during Eric Lindros' 23-games on the sidelines last season, he again heard his name connected with a trade, this time involving Toronto. The trade deadline passed with him still in Philly.
テつ*Lindros looks at it from another perspective.
テつ*"He's there every night, working hard," his club and Olympic teammate said. "He's always been a quiet leader. That's why so many people are interested in Roddy, because he's such a good player. His reputation as a gritty player and a hard worker is known throughout the league."
テつ*It is not likely any player in hockey, anywhere, works harder off the ice. The pushups, situps and all his other gym work rise into the hundreds, leaving him as hard as an oak table with a fat content as low.
テつ*"Nobody works like him," a Philadelphia publicist marvelled. "He's by far the best-conditioned Flyer, maybe the best-conditioned player in the league."
テつ*When Brind'Amour arrives in the corners, it's as a fastball, not a mushball. His teammates will tell you he has a recovery time permits him to come off a long, hard shift and be ready to go again in moments.
テつ*Obviously, none of this is lost on Bobby Clarke, his Flyers and Team Canada boss. When the horses-for-courses team was selected, Clarke could offer a both a quarter-horse and two-miler in the same package.
テつ*Clarke would also know that Brind'Amour, having spent seasons rarely going longer than a month with the same linemates, can adapt fast to the special demands of the concentrated Olympic tournament.
テつ*Brind'Amour's exceptional fitness probably figures in his having played 372 straight games, Philly's all-time highest.
テつ*Brind'Amour is ninth on the club's all-time goal-scoring list, whose 23 goals this term include many timely ones and a few short-handed efforts.
テつ*None of this has won him much more respect than the young Rodney Dangerfield received, though.
テつ*Maybe a similar breakthrough awaits Rodney Brind'Amour in Nagano.

テつ*CENTRE/WINGER
テつ*HEIGHT: 6-foot-1
テつ*WEIGHT: 202 lbs.
テつ*HISTORY: The Ottawa-born forward was the Blues' first-round pick in 1988. He was dealt to Philly in 1991. The 27-year-old will join linemate Eric Lindros in Nagano.

I was not a big fan of Ron Francis (off the ice)...One of the reasons is because of something I witnessed during a luncheon withthe Canes. This is where you can pay $500 for a half of table and $1000 for a table and a player or coach will sit at your table. My sister and I (this was a few years ago obviously) paid $35.00 each and sat at a table with a bunch of college hockey players and had a blast! (no Canes)....Ron was sitting at the table beside us.
Paul got up and did his normal dead pan humor speech stuff and was very funny. He then said he was going to let everyone mingle with players with any questions they have. Granted, the time given for the length of the luncheon was not to be over for 45 mins. Ron got up and started heading out the door. This little ole lady went up to him and said "oh are you leaving??" and he rudely said "yes, I need to go pick up my kids"......
sorry.....that did not set well with me to see that come from the Captain of the team. It was rude and he just turned around and walked away. He could of atleast spent two seconds talking to her. Alot of people spent alot of money to get to associate with these players.
Now Roddy and Gelinas (is what sticks out in my mind) could not get enough of talking to everyone. They stayed around for a long time. That is why I think Rod will be great for the sport in Carolina. He gets out there & associates with non hockey people and represents the sport. He has a GREAT attitude. I am not saying others don't do that, I am just saying he does..
I use to get reports from one of my bosses because his wife works out at the same gym that Rod does. Everyone loves him there and of course alot of women have their hopes up.....LOL
