"Here to Play, Here to Stay"...that is the new slogan for the hurricanes this year...what moron with a marketing degree from a milkbox came up with that? At a maximum it lends credence to the irresponsible journalism that plagued the "hockey" reporters who did no research during the lockout and would just throw names out of teams that had to be contracted. The number of times I read a journalist refer to Carolina as an expansion team just annoyed the hell out of me. I understand the whole, if ice isnt mother nature made, they shouldnt have hockey...and you know what I am ok with it if the league is ok with being a regional, less $$$ avail (which come from it being national) but they arent. Add to that 3 of the last three final participants...Anaheim, Tampa, Carolina...ice isnt made in any of those spots, save for a few weeks in January. It is true that Carolina is located in NC, but what is untrue is the amount of reporting about "Nascar rednecks" who cant possibly be into hockey. If the journalists did the minor level of research they would discover that thanks to Nortel, IBM and Sony-Ericcson, the area here is loaded with canadian and northern transplants who love hockey and pay for it, when a competitive product is on the ice, which I am hopeful we will have this year again.

So how does the genius Hurricanes organization respond? By giving into the garbage journalists, with "Here to Play, Here to Stay"...brilliant...let me tell you....I love this team, and will continue to enjoy going to games, but how some sports franchises stay in business is beyond me..

alright enough ranting...just an idiotic slogan which has annoyed me this morning...

There was some discussion of the new slogan in the Bulls/Relaunch thread and most agree that it's a lame slogan.

I do think it's lame - absolutely, but it's not directed at me. I think it's directed to all those folks that are truly the casual/bandwagon fan that read the columns by Tudor and Barnett and get nothing but negative from any national media. If they are going to get beat over the head with that information, perhaps the Canes want to send out their own message - however stupid it might be to those of us here (who aren't going to be swayed one way or another by any slogan).

I think the area has always responded to being underestimated - look at the '04 draft turnout, so perhaps they want to tap into that "don't underestimate us" type appeal.

But yeah, it's lame. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's "moronic", but whatever.

my problem with it is the slogan/marketing campaign is another opportunity to get the entire fan base energized...in my opinion, this slogan asbsolutely blew it in taking advantage of that opportunity....

I agree the slogan is lame. But I can understand the reasoning behind it. When you are continually slammed, even in your local papers about contraction, moving, and going out of business, I guess this was their response to it all. If you go to the Canes webpage and click on the "Here to play" media player to watch the commercial, it makes more sense.

I haven't liked any of the slogans. "This is hockey" was the all-time worst in my opinion. "You'll know when you go" ?? that was another winner. Face it, we just have a bad slogan writer..*L*

Yep, they already have your money. And mine. They aren't bothering to direct any marketing at us.

Thinking on it, I guess I can see that the slogans are always directed at the casual or non fans....or maybe it's just coincidence, but the only slogan I liked at all was the one they had when I'd just moved here and wasn't a fan yet.

From a communications and marketing perspective, I don't think this is a good choice simply because it gives season-long air time to a negative.

The move rumor started about 5 minutes after the first puck dropped in the RESA (remember that?), and has grown and faded over the years, fed mostly by media rumor. PK made his most emphatic statement earlier this year that the team isn't moving in response to a new round of percieved threats and fresh trash from the N&O...

"Here to stay," is just a derivative of "We're not leaving." It serves its purpose for a short-term sound bite, but makes a lousy theme.

So, what would everyone else suggest? It is easy to point at a bad theme...what would a good one look like? Keep in mind that it is usually based on some solid research, and a plan to take your audience from one place to another. Absent of that, it's fun to throw up some ideas...

1. Cold ice. Hot nights.
2. Hockey. Fresh. Attitude.
3. Puck. You. Hockey.

I really think this was to do one thing and one thing alone ... take away any steam built up by articles saying the team will move. With this slogan, it doesn't even justify a response. PK, Jr, ect. shouldn't even have to answer those questions anymore, and will be justified in being nasty if the question comes. It will deflate that form of negativity that is a constant burden on the franchise.

To that end, it work ... it's just unfortunate they had to dedicate the whole marketing plan to it.

True...that's the sad part. They could have used this as a side-bar on the web, and in some other select areas - it didn't need to be the main message...

Giving air-time to the negatives is an NHL specialty.

It is easy to criticize the slogan. But, I'm not paid to create a good slogan. I have no training in marketing, I have done none of the research and am not aware of what direction the franchise wants to "take" us. However, I presume an NHL team's staff would consist of someone who is. It's hard to tell from that slogan, though. :-/

What do I want to hear in a slogan? How about tell me what the team is planning to do this year? How about something about winning? Assuming we're planning on doing that....... ;)

I really don't think our abyssimal attendance the last season had anything to do with people being afraid to get too attached because the team might leave. I think it had to do with the stink on the ice they were trying to pass off as hockey. Win games and people will come. Period. So, really, we don't even need a slogan.....we need a decent team. I'm hoping we have that.

I look at the slogan this way. If PK ever does sell the team or move it now, we can sue him because we have the slogan in writing. :D

Yeah, the slogan is kinda lame. When JR/PK (whichever it was) said it at that press conference, had it been decided as our slogan before then or did it stem from that comment? I'm just glad that T-shirt they gave us at the Bulls game was so large I won't be wearing it out in public. It likely will never see the world outside of my pajama drawer. ;)

I'm not quite sure what they were trying to accomplish with this slogan - its almost as if the idea that the team may go somewhere would keep someone who wanted to come to a game from coming. "Well gee- I was going to buy a ticket but there was this rumor".. it makes no sense.

I would want to see something that made me excited and felt the team was dedicated to putting some excitement on the ice or planning for the future or something optimistic rather than addressing the idea that the team may move.

I still like "Carolina Hurricanes - every time we hit the post and angel gets its wings"

4. "Ribbed for Her Carolina Hurricanes!" (ok, so that sounds pretty promising for female fans... :smoke: )

A MUCH NEEDED DISCLAIMER BEFORE I PROCEED: I really, seriously did not make these up (the slogans, that is, the snark on the other hand...). If you *really* need to blame someone, Canes, blame TheSurrealist.org. Thank you!! :D

You Need A Carolina Hurricane(s).

Doesn't everyone?

The Carolina Hurricanes Go Straight To Your Head.

Winning or losing, they certainly do.

151 Countries, One Carolina Hurricanes.

Duh.

Speaking of going international...

Avez-Vous Un Carolina Hurricanes?

Mama Mia, That'sa One Spicy Carolina Hurricanes!

THIS is what would happen if even *just one* member of ABBA was put in charge of slogans.

Only (the) Carolina Hurricanes Have The Answer.

Huh? Since when did Allen Iverson become a hockey player?

The Carolina Hurricanes Sign Means Happy Motoring.

I'd bet that "Carolina Hurricanes Xing" signs would go over quite well at The Eye.

Schhh... You Know Carolina Hurricanes.

Well...they *do* say silence is golden.

It Makes Your Carolina Hurricanes Smack.

What does? Chewing gum? The fans? The Detroit Red Wings? The list could go on...

Do The Carolina Hurricanes.

Um, no comment.

My idea would have been a somber beginning with a sky of red and black clouds rolling creating a feeling of upcoming turbulence and fade in the phrase "A Storm is Coming..." then jump in with several upbeat short sniplets of past Canes highlights with the uptempo music (i.e. goal scoring, crowds cheering, fist pumping, closeups of faceoffs, etc. and then climax with a loud clap of thunder returning to the rolling red and black clouds with a fade in of "Coming, October 5th... are you prepared?"
