The American Red Cross and the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, local affiliate of America’s Second Harvest, will set up at the Carnival and during the game and will be accepting donations.
All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. You can help the victims of this disaster and thousands of other disasters across the country each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to those in need. Call 1-800-HELP NOW or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish). Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund may be sent to your local American Red Cross chapter or to the American Red Cross, P. O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013. Internet users can make a secure online contribution by visiting redcross.org.
If you know someone who's into hockey, but doesn't care about Pre-Season games, get their butt out to the game on Sept. 16!!!! It would be wonderful to have a packed house that night.[/quote]

The Hurricanes should stop giving out tax advice especially if it is wrong. If the Canes charge for tickets and give the proceeds to charity, it is Gale Force Sports that gets the tax deduction, not the ticket purchaser. The purchaser only gets a deduction if the price exceeds fair market value. (like if they put a $5 Red Cross surcharge on the preseason tickets.) The Canes tax advice is like saying that everything you buy at Goodwill is a tax deduction becsuse Goodwill is giving the proceeds to charity. WRONG, the person who donated the stuff to Goodwill gets the tax deduction, not the person who buys from Goodwill.

do you think perhaps the GFH has contacted someone to make sure what they are doing is correct?? since it asks people to call regarding tax deductable group tickets for the game and doesn't give specifics, then perhaps if you call you will be given information about how it is tax deductable. guess I don't read it as giving tax advice. I just think they would have gotten IRS information before doing this. it is not so different than my job asking me to keep additional information on my work mileage so that if additional reimbursement is made due to gas prices, I won't have a tax problem later on. the IRS told them how it should work before they told us what to do. hopefully, GFH is equally able to ask the question before providing the answer to ticket buyers.

This game is a free game for STHs, so perhaps the "fair market value" for this game has just become $0 and all proceeds are indeed tax deductible.
I'm with TC - perhaps they actually know what they're doing.

http://www.newsobserver.com/front/story/2789705p-9229319c.html,
Did you a buy at ticket the Raleigh Little Theater performance of "The Story" which was giving all of one night's proceeds to the Red Cross?
If yes, good for you. But it's not a deduction unless you made a donation above the ticket price. . . . . .
"If you receive something of value in return for your contribution such at theater tickets, merchandise, services or goods, then you can only deduct the amount that exceeds the fair market value of the benefit received," said Valerie Thornton, an IRS representative.

Yes, that's very true.... but you're missing the point. The point is that the Theatre company is giving away any profit they make to a worthy cause. You don't go to this performance for any benefit for yourself, you go because you know they're giving away the income.
And since this company is a non-profit anyway, and theatre companies need every penney they can get to stay operational-- it's quite a grand gesture on their part.

I think his only point is that the Canes have their facts wrong on the tax deductible thing above. I agree, you don't do charity to get the tax deduction. But, the Canes shouldn't be reporting it if there isn't a deduction to be had (which I have no clue about....I'm still take the standard deduction ).
