I taped tonight's show. I just watched it and could not believe it! How is Josh still on the show and Ruben was in the bottom two? Everyone, including Josh knew he was gone. All I know is that someone has a sweet computer program to cast thoudands of votes for their favorite contestant. Ruben and Clay are definatley the best on the show hands down. If one of them do not win, the show is rigged!

I haven't watched it yet, Reuben was in the bottom 2???? Are you kidding me??? He is easily The Best on that show.. I like Clay too, but Reuben has it all!

The final four are Ruben, Clay, Kimberly, Josh. Trenyce got the axe last night. SURELY Josh will go next. As long as Ruben, Clay, and Kimberly are the final 3, I'm happy. I really think Kimberly has as fine a voice as any of them.

Of course, I'm sure you all know by now that Clay is from Raleigh, he was my kids camp counselor at the Y for years (as recently as this year). Great kid!

Thanks Eileen....I had heard bad things about Trenyce on 101.5.. they said she was already behaving like a DIVA...the staff couldn't deal with her anymore..so maybe the fans of the show kind of picked up on that..

Josh has a great voice on certain songs..but some styles are not his bag....Reuben has so much soul...I loved it when he did Kiss and Say Goodbye..that rocked...I would buy that CD today!! but not sure other styles he may be able to do if he is the American Idol..I think he can probably do whatever he sets his mind to do! :D

Clay does well on all kinds of tunes...even though Simon doesn't always agree.. :p

Kimberly does well on different styles too..she can belt it out..

should be interesting.. good luck to the remaining 4

I don't like how Simon was riding Clay about not being energetic on stage and not moving around enough, but all Rueben was doing was standing still and moving his arm back & forth! I think even if Rueben went next week he'd still get a contract, the boy is so talented. I personally thought Clay was amazing on "Solitaire". It blew me away.

Jeff O - what songs will be on their CD?

Being a diva is nothing compared to her past history which includes things like theft (Mug shots as exhibit A below). Apparently since she told Fox about the arrest, it didn't matter.. if that's the case.. bring back Frenchie!!

I've been casting a cursitory eye in that direction from time to time, but I haven't watched the show either. Clay isn't pop star material, but he has a lot of talent ~ I'm thinking Broadway would have him in a minute. He's got a very Barry Manilow type appeal about him. :)

Anyone want to let me know how Clay did during his first song tonight? I got a phone call and didn't realize the buffer on the TWC-DVR only goes back 30 minutes (if you aren't specifically telling it to record the whole show) and missed the first songs. My kids tell me it was very good and it looked like it from the brief recap at the end. Can't say I'm a big fan of "Grease is the Word" which was his 2nd one ;).

Gotta say Ruben's 2nd song (How Can You Mend a Broken Heart) was incredible - far better than what they Bee Gees did with it. In fact, the songs were ALL better than the original recordings.

Turbulence
05-06-2003, 08:38 PM
Clay's first song was spectacular...better than the BeeGees themself...same song that the country guy sang second.
Clay and Ruben are clearly the class of the field...The other two can't even compare.

I'm just waiting for Clay to start wearing a 919 jacket...

Thanks Turby! The short clip sounded great. I'm sure a radio station will replay it tomorrow morning, so perhaps I'll catch it then.

I noticed somewhere (who knows where) that Clay is a James Taylor fan. I think his voice would suit JTs music quite well and it would also have that whole NC tie-in thing going for it. I hope he works one into his performances at some point. (Even if SHC has OD'd on JT ;)).

Pretty soon I guess they'll have to sing those pre-written Diane Warren songs  once it gets narrowed down, huh?

hhmm, I am hoping Josh gets voted off next. It may just be because I don't like country, but he just doesn't do it for me. I like Kim alright. Clay is good but Ruben is still my favorite for sure! I liked it better when they got to pick a song from a genre as opposed to having to do Neil Sedaka or the Bee Gees though

I thought Clay did an excellent job on the first song..and he did good on Grease too..but when he did his little pelvic thrust..he really did look uncomfortable.. I love his voice...very pure...he just opens his mouth and the words roll out..

Ruben did a good job too..his voice is pure too!!

I think it will be Kimberly or Josh that goes tomorrow night!

Look near the front, facing the stage on the right wearing a blue shirt. Is that Chopper Harrison???? It certainly looks like it to me! I'll look again after the break. Based on last night's performances, Ruben deserves to go. Kimberly really stepped it up....however, I'd say that Kimberly deserves to go tonite because of prior mediocre performances. Ruben had an off night....but still deserves to be in the final two.
It'll be Ruben and Kim in the final two tonight...with Kim packing her bags.

Clay's last two songs were great. Mack the Knife was almost as good as the original, and Unchained Melody was spectacular. He really deserves to win...

I must say Kimberly really surprised me last night  . But I'm still not sure if she'll make it to the final 2. Rueben voice was sort of rasby and acted as if he was having trouble holding out the notes, IMO he's not as good as he was in the beginning. I really wouldn't be surprised if he was voted off tonight  . I'm just hoping Clay will make it, I mean I tried to vote for me for 40 minutes solid last night and I couldn't get through once...

I thought Rueben seemed to be suffering from a little scratchy throat or hoarsness too. I didn't really care for the format since the first 2 songs were kind of a crap shoot. Worked for some, didn't for others.

I think both Clay and Rueben are great, but both are most comfortable in their niche. I think Kim is probably got the most flexibility, but her personality doesn't really shine thru as much as the other 2.

I don't know if y'all heard it, but Clay mentioned on the radio that he was in the same "sub group" as Rueben and Kim to begin with when he came in 3rd and didn't originally advance to the final. He seemed to say that the 3 of them were great friends (even during the prelims) and got along quite well. I suppose they might be a tad more mature than some of the others that have since gotten the boot....

I heard on the radio too that the reason he forgot some of the first song is because they gave him an extra verse to sing like 15 mins. before stepping out on stage...doesn't sound too fair to me!!

I thought that Clay's version of "Unchained Melody" was awful however he did pick it up at the end which I believe saved the song. I was looking at him sing that song and was wondering, What in the world would possess him to sing a song that he could not deliver on? He sings everytihng well but that was not his best song. Not that amerca would allow him to be cut but it was not his best night.

Rueben, did have an off night and Kim did bring down the heat. I would expect to see Clay and Rueben in the bottom two with Clay pulling it out.

If Clay lost, America would be at war again but ,this time with American Idol.. LOL

I am glad that I am not the only one who noticed that. The beginning was pretty bad, but teh end was much better.

Tonight they said that the 3 people were separated by only 4%. Supposedly Clay and Ruben only seperated by 2%. Kim got the boot, not surprising because she's not had the consistent following that either of the guys have had and has been more up and down.

I didn't care for Justin Guarini's (sp?) version of Unchained Melody that he performed tonight either.

Kim by far has the best all around voice. She blew them both out of the water on tueday. It was sad to see her go after doing so well the night before. I understand the controversy over lines changing etc in Clay's song but, if that had happened to anyone else, that person would have been out of the competition. Sorry but he lost his composure and forgot the lines. Clay should have been Gone...

It is down to that time where one simple blunder cost you the game and he made that blunder... Let's be honest, America voted clay in because they could not stand to see him out.

Yes he is - they are all talented.

To expect the viewers (who are actually spending the time to vote) to forget everything they've seen before would be silly. Ruben's voice was suffering from strain obviously, but that doesn't change the fact that he's an extremely talented singer....

We are all entitled to our own opinion however, I disagree with you... Kim is a better all around singer. Rueben is a better ballad singer and Clay sings better in his element of Rock and Roll or Pop.

No one is saying Clay sucks. The fact still remains no matter how hard you pull for him, he still screwed up his lines and that would have cost anyone at any other level a chance to win but, be that as it may, American could not stand to vote off this kid. I wonder what would have happened if Rueben had done the same thing? Seems like there is a moving target for some of the contestants.

I just hope the voting is "fair" during the championship round. Don't vote for the guy who lives around the corner, vote for the guy that did the best job right there out on the only stage that counts. Fair is Fair...

Someone messed up the words previously, I think it was Josh, and they stuck around, so that theory doesn't fly. Kelly Clarkson has numerous performances last season where she was extremely hoarse and she won the whole thing.

Fair is people voting for who they want to win regardless of the reason. There are no "rules" concerning the viewership/votership. And for every person who is voting for Clay because he's "around the corner", there's someone in Alabama doing the same thing.

You know... I hear this "freedom of speech" argument a lot on message boards that are personal property of the person who owns and operates them. Usually to back up something that was said meanly and/or to deliberately to rile up others. So to quote, "I do not think it means what you think it means...."

Freedom of Speech here is governed by the Owner, and by the Moderators. This is "Private Property".
I get quite tired of the FoS thing on msg boards as well. Nobody is saying don't share you're opinion. Just do it as an adult without trying to toast other people's opinions.

This is as Nice as I get. Do as the mods/admins request, and you'll be fine. Don't, and you won't.

canesfan24, i'm not going to put up with the attitudes that are abounding today.

When a mod asks you to do something, they ask for a reason. You either do it or hit the bricks. One way or the other.

Freedom of speech does NOT apply here. I pay for this site and I call the shots. It says The Boss under my username because that's who I am. I and the mods can edit or delete anything and everything we see fit, and for whatever reasons we see fit.

However, no one is asking you to hold your tongue, they are merely asking you to phrase things in a respectful manner.

So either do that, or begone.

Haven't visited here in a while but was very intrigued by the American Idol thread. As a result of my 8 year old daughter, my family has been watching American Idol since the audition episode because we heard that one Clay Aiken was auditioning. My daughter has attended summer camp at A.E. Finley YMCA for the past 3 summers and became quite attatched to her counselors; one of which was "Gonzo" aka Clay Aiken. When picking my daughter up from camp daily, Clay would escort her to the car, buckle her into her seat and ask me how my day was, make small talk etc. I remember thinking what a nice guy he was (and for the record...I can't stand most everyone I meet). At one of the family night functions last year Clay sang a song that he had written for his recently deceased Father. I could not believe the voice, the passion, the intensity that came from this gangly, nerdy looking young man. When he finished there was utter silence and not a dry eye in the place. I never thought that I would bother calling in to the American Idol show, (let alone watch it) but I believe that Clay Aiken should be the American Idol because I see him as what an idol should be...a good, caring, loving person. If my daughter (or anyones child) needs to "idolize" anyone, I would be quite proud to have her idolize Clay Aiken as I believe that he conveys the sort of image that is lacking today in celebrities...Sincerity, decency and morality.

I thought they both did a great job tonight...the choir sounded great...I personally thought Clay's Bridge Over Troubled Water was one of the best, if not THE best performance that he has done..

Good luck to both..they are great performers..but I hope Clay wins! :spin:

I thought Clay did extremely well on his first (the original) and Bridge Over Troubled Water. I could have done w/o the 2nd songs from each of them. The brilliance of "Imagine" is the lyrics, so stylizing it didn't do anything for me - no fault of Ruben's of course - it was the arrangement. And Clay's McCartney song was kinda just there. I may even try to vote tonight!

PeteCaniac, I have a similar story to yours about "Gonzo". I remember the very first time I met him, 5 years ago on the Friday of my then-6 year old son's first day camp session. When I held up my card indicating who I was there to pick up, he radioed his name to the PA person and before I drove off said "[my son's name]....he had a great week" and smiled. When I drove around back to pick him up, he'd received "Camper of the Week". I never knew his real name until I saw him on the local news when the Idol stuff was just starting up - he's always been "Gonzo" all these years.

It's interesting since they just announced that one of them got 50.something% and the other 49.something%. Makes perfect sense - presuming the phone capacity was identical, people were calling wall-to-wall for 3 hours - they SHOULD have the same amount of votes. Kinda dumb actually.

They are probably just confused hockey fans who think we're still in the playoffs. ;) :p

I've never watched this show but I did see a couple minutes of it last night and saw a little of each guy's last song. From that limited viewing Clay had the superior voice by far, IMO, and I'm sorry he didn't win.

KevynFan14
05-21-2003, 09:04 PM
Why?

They had a camera-man from American Idol there and they were taping the people cheering. Ryan would sit down with Clay and interview him, and he'd show him all the people in the RBC Center watching the show..they also showed some of Clays friends and stuff. I guess they did this so that if Clay won, they could show all the people there going crazy. Too bad for Clay..I wish he could have won.

Added: I like SHC's reason ;)

nccanes
05-21-2003, 09:12 PM
Why?

Because they wanted to? Because they know Clay and wanted to make a good showing for the Nat'l TV audience? Because they were teenagers who are looking to have fun? Because they were kids that knew him from the YMCA as a great Camp Counselor?

Joking aside, Clay is probably known by literally thousands of people in Raleigh, he's made an impact on thousands of kids and families over the years at the Y.

I realize that shows that take on a life of their own (particularly reality TV) get knocked, but really it's all just entertainment.

And not trying to sound like the "virtuous" Bill Bennett (;)), but there ain't THAT many shows I can watch on TV with my kids (outside of sports). I'm not gonna complain when there's one that shows up that gets us all together for a couple of hours a week.

SHC was joking around about Hockey, but I guarantee people wondered "why" people would go to the ESA to watch hockey on a Jumbotron too!

Different strokes and all that! :)

Well, they've changed the voting gap a few times (13k, then 1300, then 130k), but regardless it was a statistical tie - and the gap could be explained by technical issues as much as anything else.

Nice they both get contracts. What a gracious "loser".

Copied from another thread....

I was listening to the radio today and people were calling in saying when they voted for Clay using text messages, it would come back with "Thanks for voting for Ruben" What is up with that? Clay was robbed I believe. The people at AT&T are looking into it now...but what if the voting WAS wrong? Will they give the American Idol to Clay? Or let Ruben keep it? I think Clay will let Ruben keep it because he really his a great sport!

Also, there was this lady who pissed me off more than anyone ever has. She said, "There 8,809 people at the RBC Center...that is more than the Hurricanes can even get in the building." WHAT WAS THAT ABOUT?! AHHHHH That pissed me off!

Anyways, I think Clay should have won. I had only watched the last 2 nights of the show and I must admit, it was kinda cool to see.

Somebody I know who works at The Eye and I were talking about that one day last year...what she told me was that it had something to do with the ESA/RBC being built on what was formerly a hog farm. The man who sold the land wanted one of three requests to be fulfilled...either name the arena "The Hog Palace" (As Dave Barry would say, I am not making this up.), or name the team "The Ice Hogs", OR have the mascot or something team related have something to do with hogs. Well, it's obvious which path was taken...and quite frankly, I don't blame the Canes one bit for taking it. ;)

I've got to agree with Hockeyfan here. Despite it not really mattering since both of them get contracts I think Clay was robbed. What was up with the host saying the difference between the two of them was 13,000 votes, then saying it was 1,300 votes, and then we find out today that the difference was actually 130,000 votes!

Pretty pathetic handling I'd say. I'd also wager a guess that the phone companies were unprepared for the wealth of calls. Busy signals lasting until eternity, etc. etc. etc. My father was telling me earlier today that one of the phone companies doing the American Idol thing (I can't remember the name) was boasting that it had handled 100 million votes for the show. I believe the reported number of votes on the show was 24 million.

That's quite a few missing votes there.

Ah, conspiracy theories abound. Oh well. It's amazing though that Reuben's mom was able to call in and get more than 500 votes for him every week just by herself (as quoted in People Magazine) when voters in the finals could only get single digit numbers of votes in.

They were both amazing though but I personally felt Clay was the better of the two.

He goes to my school as well, woohoo! He certainly should've been in the chorus here, I've been in it each of the four semesters I've been at UNC Charlotte and we definitely wouldn't have minded a Clay Aiken in there.

I saw it Folg and "recognized" him. So you're a big singer too, huh? ;)

I thought it was Saturday's paper. Yeah it was. Found it online:

Regarding the May 23 article "Aiken's fans cry foul":
One could argue until the end of time about whether the vote counting for the "American Idol" TV show was a fraud or a sham (SBC Communications, which handles long telephone service in just 13 states, reported it had handled 100 million "American Idol" calls, yet nationally Fox counted only 24 million; either the count was fake or the busy signals indicated mismanagement at Fox). Maybe the FCC should investigate.

But that is done and gone. A high point for me is comparing Rupert Murdoch's Fox network nationally with how Jim Goodmon's Capitol Broadcasting handled things locally. WRAL, WRAL-FM, Fox 50 and the Durham Bulls cross-promoted something good locally, showing the value of locally controlled media rather than conglomerate owners of 2,500 radio stations nationwide.

As the parent of a son who also sang at Leesville Middle, Leesville High and UNC-Charlotte and has followed music, I was so proud of a quality singer like Clay Aiken who truly represent the high ideals of an Idol. Whether an incompetent network crowned the wrong candidate is meaningless.

Cover of the Rolling Stone
(Dr. Hook)

Well we are big rock singers
we've got golden fingers
and we're loved everywhere we go,
we sing about beauty and we sing about thruth
at ten thousand dollars a show;
we take all kind of pills
to give us all kind of thrills,
but the thrill we've never known,
is the thrill that'll get you
when you get your picture
on the cover of the Rolling Stone

CHORUS:
Rolling Stone
wanna see my picture on the cover
wanna buy five copies for my mother
wanna see my smilin' face
on the cover of the Rolling Stone

I've got a freaky old lady
called my Cocain Katy
who embroiders on my jeans,
I've got my poor old gray-haired Daddy,
drivin' my limousine
Now it's all designed
to blow our minds
but our minds won't really be blown,
like the blow that'll get you
when you get your picture
on the cover of the Rolling Stone

CHORUS

We got a lot of
little teenage, blue-eyed groupies
who do anything we say,
we got a genuine Indian guru,
who's teachin' us a better way,
we got all the friends
that money can buy,
so we never have to be alone,
and we keep gettin' richer
but we can't get our picture
on the cover of the Rolling Stone

Have you seen Almost Famous Bootleg: The Untitled Cut?

It's the director's cut version, there is a 2-disc dvd set that is well worth a purchase that includes the original theatrical version and the director's cut. The director's cut is about an hour longer bringing the running time to about 3 hours as apposed to the theatrical versions' running time of a little over two hours. It really fleshes out a lot of the characters, particularly the band-aids, and has some really great lines and scenes that I really wish were in the theatrical cut. It's a version of the film that is more geared toward the hardcore music lover with some historical stuff thrown in.

The thing is a bit pricy, about 30 bucks, but it is well worth the money. It can probably be found on Ebay for cheaper as well. There's a real good deleted scene that is set to "Stairway to Heaven". They could not get the rights to the song for the dvd though so you have to play the song on your cd player right as you cue up the scene for it to work properly.

'American Idol' Winner Suing Jersey Maker
Studdard Says Company Used Image Without Permission

POSTED: 9:20 a.m. EDT August 1, 2003
UPDATED: 9:34 a.m. EDT August 1, 2003

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The 205 jerseys were Ruben Studdard's signature look, but now the American Idol is at odds with the owners of 205 Flava.

Studdard is suing the Birmingham company that makes the popular 205 jerseys for $2 million because he says they unfairly profited from his image.

"We believe that 205 Flava substantially benefited from its relationship with Ruben Studdard," said Byron Perkins, Studdard's attorney. "205 Flava has continued to use Ruben's image to market their goods, but they didn't have permission to use his image. They failed to compensate him for using his image."

Studdard, a Birmingham native, wore a 205 jersey nearly each time he performed on national television on the show "American Idol." Studdard went on to win the competition.

The lawsuit alleges the shirts were Studdard's idea and were made to show his affection for the city of Birmingham.

"Ruben decided to file the suit in Jefferson County. Whether he's right or whether he's wrong, he wanted the people of Birmingham to make the decision," Perkins said.

WVTM-TV attempted to speak with the owners of 205 Flava but they had no comment.

I suspected that there was a falling out. Even before the show concluded he stopped wearing them. I thought it was in part because of some influence from the stylists, but then he never wore them and I wondered what was up.

Somewhere, Ruben Studdard is sweating.

Owners of hip-hop clothingmaker 205 Flava Inc. say they secretly paid the singer to wear the company's bright jerseys on American Idol despite a ban by the program on such deals, the Associated Press reports.

A lawyer for owners Willie and Frederick Jenkins responded this week to a lawsuit filed by Studdard last week accusing the brothers of wrongly profiting from his image as the second Idol winner.

The Jenkinses' lawyer, at a news conference, showed copies of $10,000 in checks made out to Studdard's brother, Kevin Studdard, and his manager, Ron Edwards.

I went to the concert and enjoyed it for the most part. The only thing that pissed me off is how little talent Kimberly Caldwell has.... She is clearly all looks and did not seem to give a damn. She was obviously just going through the motions up there as evidenced by her backup dancers working like crazy and pouring with sweat and her just sort of waltzing around and smiling. She was also a very, very average singer. This is all my impression from seeing her at this stage show, I never saw an episode of American Idol with her on it.

The others all came across well and seemed to having fun up there.

But it was obviously VERY clear who the crowd's favorite was. I was down on the bottom level, row C and looking up and around when he was on stage it was pretty astonishing seeing so many people screaming and jumping all around the arena. Never before had I heard so many screaming girls... The absolute blast of sound that was coming solely from the cheering was pretty unbelievable to be honest. It was certainly up there with the volume level present at game 3 of the finals, though that will always be the best.

I thought Clay was the best, he has a great voice and made sure to work the crowd. The concert was a little long and everytime Kimberly Caldwell was on stage the crowd was very visibly bored (particularly for her solo song, the 6 year old girl in front of me turned to her mom after it was over and gave her a thumbs down sign, very cute) but the atmosphere was very electric during Clay's stuff and he didn't disappoint his fans.

Just wanted to report on that.

I thought overall the show was very good. I was very impressed with all the talent. Even the song selections were pretty good however I'm not quite sure what category you would have put Reuben's "hip-hop" song from his CD. (Guess I just answered my question...but I was not impressed with that). Yes, Clay was the crowd pleaser.

I pass the 101.5 studio every morning on my way to work. The morning of the concert they had Clay there. I couldn't resist and went to check it out. There were about 15-20 people there and I got a kick out of all the screaming, crying and yes, hysteria when Clay arrived. He is much more adorable in person. Unfortunately he tried to get to some of the fans but they rushed him inside. More screaming, crying...you guessed it uncontrollable hysteria. That I don't understand, but it made for an interesting morning :D
