As long as it's Philly, Toronto, NJ, Ottawa, or any other team in the eastern conference, except Carolina, and a cuple of teams from out west, I am perfectly OK if this becomes a trend...

yes its true.....they are injured......I guess better to get it out of the way.....(not that it can't happen again later)....
the good news (I guess) for Hatcher is that its not his bad knee. That may have been season ending.

Not an injury but close, and I'm laughing what a big deal it is. "Oh My God, Eric Lindros got hit hard in preseason!"
A big pain for Big E
Media scrutiny getting tiresome
By TERRY KOSHAN -- Toronto Sun
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Eric Lindros is getting testy talking about getting hit and on what line he's going to play on during the opening of training camp. (Toronto Sun/Alex Urosevic)
It's barely two days into on-ice sessions at Maple Leafs training camp and Eric Lindros already is feeling the heat.
A day after he was crunched by rookie defenceman Staffan Kronwall during a scrimmage, Lindros was taken aback with the idea that such an incident was newsworthy.
"You guys are going to make a big deal out of every little thing that happens," a slightly annoyed Lindros told a throng of reporters at the Ricoh Coliseum yesterday.
"I'm a hockey player and hockey players get hit. I don't think there is anything more to talk about."
Maybe, but when you're Eric Lindros and you have a history of injuries and you've been pining to play for the Leafs for years and you can be one of the top players in the game if all is going well, it's certainly a topic for discussion. If he tapes his stick blade a different way than normally, people will want to know why.
Actually, Lindros said he didn't mind the hit along the boards from Kronwall, a 6-foot-3 defenceman from Sweden who stands a good chance of grabbing one of the few spots on the blue line.
Lindros understands Kronwall has little choice but to do all he can to make a positive impression.
"You can fly up and down the ice all you want," Lindros said. "But it's getting into the grind situation of being hit and hitting back. Getting into those kinds of scenarios is what camp is all about. Wait until we get into the exhibition games, where there is a little more intensity."
As Lindros was talking to reporters, a couple of other big-name additions who will be under plenty of scrutiny in the coming months were connecting well on the ice.
Centre Jason Allison, who did not participate in the first scrimmage on Tuesday after aggravating a hip injury, took part and clicked with Jeff O'Neill in the few shifts the two had together.
"Health-wise, I felt great," said Allison, who has not played in an NHL game since the 2002-03 season. "The speed is good out there. But it's going to be different once the season starts. It's more of a thinking game where now you are not quite sure where everyone is going to be."
If you're O'Neill, you have to be rubbing your hands with glee in anticipation of what will happen in the pre-season and beyond. As a winger, O'Neill is going to play with one of Allison, Lindros or captain Mats Sundin.
O'Neill has scored in each of the scrimmages and likely will get a look with Allison.
"Our big three centres are all honours to play with," O'Neill said.
Lindros has been counted upon to be a scorer with the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers, but there's a good possibility he will wind up as the third-line centre in a checking role. But don't ask him about his role.
"We are two days into this and you guys are speculating about things that are going to happen in a month (when the regular season begins)," Lindros said.

They're dropping like Flyers in Philly:
Kapanen Injures Shoulder, Out 10 Weeks
Flyers forward Sami Kapanen will miss the next 10 weeks after injuring his right shoulder. Kapanen will have surgery next week to repair the shoulder. Below are comments from Flyers General Manager Bob Clarke as well as Kapanen.
Bob Clarke
“Sami last week had a collision with one of our players when they were fooling around. He hurt his shoulder and had an MRI performed on him yesterday. The results were that he’s got a slap tear, they call that, and a partial thickness tear of his rotator cuff. He’ll have surgery early next week, and will miss approximately 10 weeks from the date of surgery.
“Sami is going to see [Flyers team physician Dr. Peter DeLuca] this afternoon, and it looks like they’ll do it on Tuesday.â€
Sami Kapanen
“I guess it was about three or four weeks back. I think I kind of fell down on my shoulder. I can’t even finger point any hits in the past, I don’t know how many weeks we’ve been skating. It’s been sore ever since then. I still have been able to do the scrimmages and all that, but I guess it’s time to fix it.â€
On having the option to have the surgery:
“I think there’s a couple weeks now where we don’t play any regular season games, so it kind of shortens up the time you’re going to miss in the season. I think it’s better to fix it now than to try and play with a bad shoulder and get to the point where it needs to be fixed in the middle of the season and be in a bad spot going into the playoffs.â€
On it being frustrating, after having missed last season:
“It’s not just that. I just got my knee fixed over the summer and I’ve been rehabbing almost two months with that. I finally, last month, have been feeling really good skating wise, and feel like I’m in good shape I’m just anxious to get back with the new signings and the new rules. Being away from the game for a year, adding all of those up and not being able to play in the next couple months is going to be hard.â€

Tkachuk fails physical, suspended
ST. LOUIS (AP) - St. Louis Blues forward Keith Tkachuk failed a physical and was suspended Friday by the team.
General manager Larry Pleau did not elaborate on the status of Tkachuk, but said he was expected to return to the team.
TSN has learned that Tkachuk showed up overweight and the team felt it had no choice but to suspend him.
"Players have to come to camp in shape," Blue coach Mike Kitchen told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Friday. "He's been terrific following the program previously. The work stoppage has been hard on a lot of people. We had a lot of frustrated players. ... They had so many dates they had to peak, and they weren't able to hold their level of fitness."
The 33-year-old left wing had 33 goals and 38 assists in 2003-04, the last season before the lockout. He has scored 431 goals and added 401 assists in his career.
The Blues' first full-squad workout is Saturday, and the team opens the pre-season Wednesday at home against the Predators.

Report: Boucher to miss at least two weeks
Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Brian Boucher will miss at least two weeks due to a groin injury, according to the Arizona Republic.
Boucher was injured during a shootout on Friday night in an exhibition game against the Minnesota Wild.
The newspaper reported that Boucher was walking very gingerly Saturday after meeting with a team doctor. He dismissed questions about starting his re-hab assignment in the next few days as being unrealistic.
"This is my first groin injury so I don't know how it's going to respond (to treatment)," Boucher told the Republic on Saturday.Â* "I'm very disappointed that I'm injured, but it is what it is. You have to move on."
The injury leaves free agent signee Curtis Joseph as the number one goaltender by default.
The NHL is using shootouts in every pre-season game, regardless of the score, as a way to introduce the tactic to players, coaches and fans.Â* Friday's game ended 3-2 for Phoenix after regulation time, and the shootout would not have been used in a regular-season situation.
"I don't even know what to say. I've never seen anything like that," Coyotes coach Wayne Gretzky said. "The guy played really well, was maybe our best player in the game, and to take an injury in that kind of scenario is just not good."

Brian Leetch: (Groin) Skating with Team
Leetch (groin) skated with the veterans Sunday but took it easy to avoid a set-back.
"I'm a little better for sure than yesterday," Leetch told the Boston Globe. "It's still sore. Hopefully, it will make more improvement [today]. I was going easy. I want to [push it], coming to a new team, and I want to get as much time on the ice and be ready to go. But it doesn't make sense to end up fighting this for three weeks. At some point, if you keep fighting it, then all of a sudden you have to take four or five days off. We'll just monitor it here."

Tkachuk a little chunky
Tkachuk is too overweight to play, St. Louis Blues GM Larry Pleau told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The highest-paid player on the team will not be cleared to join the team until he passes a physical exam requiring him to lose an unspecified amount of weight.
"I hate to suspend anybody," said Pleau. "He'll be back and he'll be a good player for the St. Louis Blues."
Tkachuk was unavailable for comment at the time of the report by Jeremy Rutherford. Blues captain Dallas Drake said the suspension was a surprise, but believes his teammate will respond well. Said Drake: "He's accepted the fact that he's going to train his butt off and get back in here."

NHL Players' Association files grievance on behalf of Keith Tkachuk
(CP) - The NHL Players' Association has filed a grievance on behalf of Keith Tkachuk after the star winger was suspended Friday by the St. Louis Blues for failing his team physical.
NHLPA spokesman Jonathan Weatherdon said Monday the union filed the grievance the same day as the suspension. "We have disagreed with the suspension and are continuing to work at resolving it," Tkachuk's agent, Bob Murray, said Monday from Boston.
"Hopefully we can find a quick and amicable resolution."
Blues general manager Larry Pleau had little to add Monday.
"There's really not much to say other than he didn't pass the physical and he's suspended," Pleau said from St. Louis, adding that Tkachuk can't come back until he passes the physical.
The Blues open the pre-season Wednesday at home against the Predators.
The 33-year-old power winger is the second-highest paid player in the NHL at $7.6 million US, tied with Nicklas Lidstrom and Alexei Yashin behind Jaromir Jagr's $8.36 million.
Murray doesn't understand why the Blues dealt with the situation in the manner they did.
"I guess the more common approach has been, if they feel a guy has come in and isn't properly conditioned they would bring him into camp and have him do extra work," said Murray.
Tkachuk, who is working out on his own in St. Louis, had 33 goals and 38 assists in 2003-04.

Avalanche winger Hejduk out four to five weeks with knee surgery
DENVER (CP) - Colorado Avalanche sniper Milan Hejduk is expected to be out four to five weeks after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery.
The 29-year-old winger left Friday's intrasquad game because of a sore knee and had not skated since.
"It's early in the pre-season and it was the ideal time for Milan to get this taken care of," Avalanche head coach Joel Quenneville said Tuesday in a statement. "He'll be fully recovered in a few weeks and ready to embark on a long regular season."
Hejduk was Colorado's leading goalscorer two seasons in a row, leading the NHL with 50 goals in 2002-03 en route to winning the Rocket Richard Trophy. He scored 35 goals in 2003-04.
Last season, Hejduk played for Pardubice in the Czech Republic, registering 25 goals in 48 games.

After all the work for a comeback this saddens everyone in the goalie world.
Looks like Dan Blackburn's career is over [Frown]
Rangers' goaltender Dan Blackburn, who was among the yesterday's cuts, may have skated in his last professional camp.
According to New York Newsday, Blackburn will likely retire rather than return to the minor leagues. The 22-year-old was trying to make the team despite a nerve injury that prevented him from using a catching glove on his left hand. Blackburn suffered an MCL sprain Thursday, ruining his chances to make the club.

Colorado Avalanche forward Milan Hejduk will miss the start of the season after undergoing surgery on his right knee.
"The procedure went really well and a full recovery is expected," Colorado trainer Matt Sokolowski said Tuesday.
Hejduk will be out for at least four weeks, the team said. The NHL season begins Oct. 5.
Hejduk, who led the NHL in scoring with 50 goals in 2002-03 and the Avalanche with 35 goals in 2003-04, had not skated since Friday's intrasquad game -- when he hurt the knee.
During the NHL lockout, Hejduk underwent surgery on his right knee. He injured it while playing for Pardubice of the Czech League, where he scored 25 goals in 48 games.

Roenick hurt in Kings win over Coyotes
Associated Press
9/26/2005 1:29:28 AM
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Alexander Frolov's second power-play goal gave Los Angeles the lead, and the Kings used a five-goal third period to beat the Phoenix Coyotes 7-4 on Sunday night.
The Kings, who lost newly acquired all-star forward Jeremy Roenick due to a concussion at 2:25 of the second period, also got goals from Eric Belanger, Dustin Brown, Tom Kostopoulos and Steve Avery.
Oleg Saprykin scored twice on power plays for Phoenix, and Mike Comrie and Tyson Nash had a goal apiece.
Trailing 4-2 after two periods, the Kings scored five unanswered goals - including Frolov's second of the game, which put them ahead 5-4 with Phoenix centre Mike Ruff serving a holding penalty.
Los Angeles left wing Noah Clarke was off for hooking when Saprykin beat rookie goalie Mathieu Garon from short range at 14:12 of the second period to put Phoenix ahead 3-2. Nash's gave the Coyotes a two-goal margin less than 3½ minutes later.

It's a 3-year cycle for where you play a division -- we play one Western division at home and one on the road (and one not at all) each year, so since we visit the Pacific division this year (and host the Central), we will host the Kings and the rest of the Pacific either next year 06-07 or the following year 07-08... Now will JR be there 3 seasons?
Do get a good look this year at Nash, Datsyuk, and the other stars of the Central division when they come through.... they won't be back here until 08-09 season; and we'll visit them only one time in the interim...

Weight "sublexed" his left shoulder during the team's morning skate.
The 34-year old Weight posted 51 assists and 65 points for the Blues in 75 games in 2003-04.Â* He spent the lockout in Germany where he had six goals and nine assists in seven games with the Frankfurt Lions.

Red Wings' Kronwall suffers knee injury
Niklas Kronwall of the Detroit Red Wings left Tuesday night's game with a knee injury and is awaiting word on an MRI exam.
Kronwall, who has been paired with Nicklas Lidstrom on the Detroit blueline, injured his left knee in the first period of Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Avalanche in Denver.
"He has some ACL and MCL damage," general manager Ken Holland said Wednesday before the Red Wings hosted Columbus. "He's going to be examined Friday, and we'll know more about his status after we get some more opinions."
The Red Wings will be hard-pressed to find a replacement in the new salary cap era.
"We have to roll with what we have because of the CBA," Holland said. "We're certainly not going to be able to make a move to replace Niklas Kronwall."
Last week, Detroit coach Mike Babcock said he was not surprised that Kronwall had been playing so well during the preseason.
"Last year at the world championships, he was a high-end player," Babcock said last week. "He buried some guys at the world championships because he's a really strong kid, who is also a good skater."
The Red Wings selected Kronwall 29th overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. Last season, he was named MVP of the American Hockey League after scoring 13 goals and 53 points in 73 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins.
In 2003-04, Kronwall played in 20 games with the Red Wings, scoring one goal and adding four assists.

Flames lose Regehr for up to a month
CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) - The Calgary Flames will have to begin their defense of the Western Conference championship without Robyn Regehr.
The Flames on Thursday announced Regehr suffered a sprained knee in Wednesday's preseason victory over the Edmonton Oilers and will be sidelined up to one month.
The 19th overall pick in the 1998 draft, Regehr suffered the injury in the waning moments of the latest "Battle of Alberta." The loss of Regehr, whose brother Richie was signed by the Flames as a free agent in July 2004, all but assures 2003 first-round pick Dion Phaneuf a spot on Calgary's roster to start the season.
Born in Brazil, the 25-year-old Regehr appeared in all 82 games for the Flames in 2003-04, recording four goals, 14 assists and 74 penalty minutes. A member of Canada's 2004 World Cup of Hockey championship team, he has 12 tallies and 54 points in 363 career games.

Yzerman might miss start of season
DETROIT (AP) - Steve Yzerman might be sidelined with a groin injury for the Detroit Red Wings season opener against St. Louis next week.
''The injury has kept him off the ice this week and we'll know a lot more on Monday when he plans to skate again,'' general manager Ken Holland said Thursday. ''If he's not 100 percent healthy, he's not going to play because it's a long season and we're going to need him.''
The Red Wings open at home Wednesday against the Blues, then play at St. Louis the following day.
Yzerman leads all active players with 1,721 points.
After the NHL lockout canceled last season, the 40-year-old Yzerman chose to sign a one-year contract to return to Detroit for a 22nd season. The captain had to be helped off the ice in his last game after a puck broke bones near his eye during the 2004 NHL playoffs.
He'll play with a visor covering half of his face this season.
Detroit is expected to be without goaltender Chris Osgood (groin), while defenceman Niklas Kronwall (knee) is out for at least six weeks.
The Red Wings will have to count on younger players or veterans to fill in the gaps for injured players because the NHL's collective bargaining agreement limits them to a salary cap of $39 million, about half of what they used to spend.
''With the new CBA, injuries are really going to take a toll on teams even more than before,'' Holland said.
SHC has been confirmed.

Mats Sundin of the Toronto Maple Leafs suffered a fractured orbital bone against the Ottawa Senators Wednesday night and will be out indefinintely.
Sundin suffered the injury when Bryan Smolinski of the Senators tried to shoot a puck into the Leafs zone and it caught the Leafs foward near the eye.
Maple Leafs general manager John Ferguson says Sundin is still getting checked out, and that surgery remains a possibility.
That's not all on the injury front for the Leafs, though. Right winger Jeff O'Neill missed practice Thursday with a right shoulder injury, suffered when he went flying over Sens goalie Dominik Hasek into the net late in the game.

Leafs' Sundin to miss four to six weeks after breaking facial bone
TORONTO (AP) - Toronto captain Mats Sundin could miss four to six weeks after breaking the lower orbital bone when he was hit in the face by a puck in the season opener, the Maple Leafs announced Thursday.
Sundin lasted just seven minutes of the 4-3 shootout loss to the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday night.
Sundin, who was not at practice Thursday, has an unfortunate track record with face injuries, suffering both cuts and dental damage in past incidents.
I knew that puck hit him about as square as I've ever seen one hit. Ouch.

Sundin considers visor full time
TORONTO (CP) - Now that he's had the scare of his life, Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin believes the visor may go on for good when he returns from his gruesome injury.
"Yeah, I think so, I think I've used all my good breaks," Sundin said Friday, meeting reporters for the first time since getting hit in the left eye with a puck seven minutes into Wednesday's season opener. "I've had some close calls with my eyes before.
"Definitely when I start playing I'm going to have to wear one for sure and hopefully I can continue it. That's my goal, for sure."
The fact that he's not totally sure he'll keep the visor on certainly seems to defy logic, but it also underlines the reluctance so many NHL players have in wearing one. In a game where every split second counts, seeing the ice as well as they can is paramount for some players, even with the enormous risk attached to leaving their eyes unprotected.
"I'm well aware on the discussion on both ends of the argument," Leafs GM John Ferguson said after practice Friday. "Personal choice versus safety, or comfort versus safety. It's an issue that in many ways remains unresolved.
"But I have encouraged those who want to wear one to do so, for sure."
Sundin, who suffered a fractured orbital bone, is out at least four-to-six weeks and maybe longer if he ends up needing surgery. Doctors will re-examine him in five-to-six days once the swelling goes down and determine whether the orbital bone is healing on its own or whether he'll need surgery.
His injury has once again sparked up the debate in these parts about having visors become mandatory in the NHL, the Leafs a little sensitive to the subject after what happened to Bryan Berard in March 2000. The former Toronto defenceman lost sight in one eye after taking a high stick.
"I can only go back to when I was on the ice when Bryan Berard's eye injury happened to him, it's certainly something you don't want anyone to go through," said Sundin, his left eyeball barely visible.
But does that mean he would support mandatory visors in the NHL?
"It's a good question," he said. "I think maybe after a certain age, yes.
"I don't know if a guy over 30, who have played without one their whole careers, I think it would be tough for them to make it mandatory for everybody. But when you have injuries to your face and your eye area, you definitely re-evaluate your own thoughts about wearing one and that's going to be the case with me for sure."
The league has long wanted to make visors mandatory, but can't do so without the blessing of the NHL Players' Association because it's a collectively bargained issue. The union has held player votes on the subject in the past and everytime the overwhelming response is that players want to reserve the right to make a personal choice on the matter.
But the union continues to discuss the matter. Player reps have been asked in the last two months to get feedback from their teammates on that very issue.
"Our members have always felt strongly that wearing a visor is a matter of individual preference, and we respect and support their right to make a personal choice," said NHLPA spokesman Jonathan Weatherdon. "That said, the NHLPA continues to seek feedback on safety matters from our membership."Â*
Just hearing Sundin's account of what he felt after being struck by the puck should scare any player into wearing a visor.
"I didn't see, really, for almost five minutes out of my left eye and that obviously makes you concerned," he said. "But it came back pretty quick, I started to see light.
"And from what I hear my vision is supposed to get back to normal."
That it happened to Sundin is certainly out of the norm. The star centre had been extremely durable during his career, rarely missing any significant time.
"I've been fortunate - knock on wood - not to have a lot of serious injuries," he said. "More than anything it's frustrating to be out of action again, I've waited long enough to get some real hockey.
"To get an injury in the first period of the first game is really frustrating."
The Leafs (0-0-1) may also be without winger Jeff O'Neill when they host the Montreal Canadiens (2-0-0) on Saturday night (CBC, 7 p.m. ET). He's got a shoulder problem after crashing into the net Wednesday night.
"I need to get more tests done (Friday), we'll see what happens," O'Neill said.
The Leafs called up centre Kyle Wellwood from the AHL Marlies. He'll suit up against the Habs.
Sundin said with Eric Lindros, Jason Allison and Matt Stajan at centre, his team will be able to live without him.
"I think this team has proven in the last five-to-six years that we're not a team that can't play without any of our players, it doesn't matter who it is," said Sundin. "And I think we're going to see in the next few games.
"We've been a strong team playing through injuries and I'm certain that's going to be the same case this time. Eric had a good game (against Ottawa) and Jason did, too, those guys will pick up the slack."
Montreal heads into Saturday's game on a roll, having opened its season with road wins in Boston and New York.
"We played a lot better in New York than we did Boston, but I think there are things we can improve on and do better," said Montreal captain Saku Koivu. "It's still early.
"There are the new rules and stuff to get used to, but we're happy that we're 2-0. It's a good start for us.".

O'Neill left behind
By Mike Zeisberger, Toronto Sun
At least Jeff O'Neill will be at home for Thanksgiving dinner.
But that's hardly any consolation for the MapleLeafs winger, who remained back in Toronto while the remainder of the team travelled to Ottawa for tonight's game against the Senators at the Corel Centre.
While his injured right shoulder appears to be getting better, the healing process was not far enough along to allow the hard-shooting O'Neill to accompany the Leafs to the nation's capital.
At this point, O'Neill hopes to be back in the lineup when the Leafs host the Philadelphia Flyers tomorrow at the Air Canada Centre.
"We'll see how it goes,"O'Neill said yesterday. "A couple of days ago, I was a little more skeptical. But now, at least, it's shown improvement.
"It's just a bruise but the pain is pretty intense."
It could have been worse. O'Neill underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in that same shoulder back in March of 2004.
"It's a relief for me that (it wasn't worse this time),"O'Neill said.
hmmm. perhaps he should wait to come back After the Philly game. that's not going to be an easy outing. no love loss there.

Knee injury sidelines Smyth indefinitely
The undefeated Edmonton Oilers have suffered a setback in the young NHL season, as veteran forward Ryan Smyth is out indefinitely with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee.
Smyth suffered the injury after a knee-on-knee collision with Vancouver defenceman Bryan Allen in the first period of Saturday's game against the Canucks.
He will be re-assessed by the team over the next couple of days.
Smyth, 29, signed a two-year deal with the Oilers last month after leading the team with 23 goals and 59 points in the 2003-04 campaign.
During the NHL lockout, he made his ninth and 10th appearances as a member of Team Canada.
He scored four points in six games to help Canada win the gold medal at the World Cup of Hockey last year and netted two goals and three points in nine games as Canada won the silver medal at this year's IIHF world championship in Vienna.

Coyotes to put Cujo on injured reserve
The Phoenix Coyotes will have to make due without the services of Curtis Joseph for the short term, as the netminder aggravated a nagging groin injury in the team's home game against the Wild on Saturday.
The Coyotes have called up goaltneder Steve Passmore and are expected to place Joseph on injured reserve.
Joseph is 1-1 in the young season with a 2.02 goals-against average.
He signed a one-year contract with the Coyotes in August after a turmultuous 2003-04 season where he went from being the odd-man out to being the man in the net for the Detroit Red Wings.
In 16 NHL seasons, Joseph has a 397-290-90 record with 43 shutouts and a 2.74 goals-against average.

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Blackhawks placed forward Eric Daze on injured reserve Monday and recalled forward Jason Morgan from Norfolk of the American Hockey League.
Daze missed his second game this season on Sunday after tweaking his back in the warmup before Friday's game against the San Jose Sharks. Daze has had surgery to repair herniated discs in his back three times in five years.
Morgan was acquired last year from the Calgary Flames in exchange for Ville Nieminen. Morgan has played in 33 NHL games and has recorded one goal and four assists.
Morgan was sent to Norfolk before the start of the season, where he appeared in two games with the Admirals and had one assist.

Steve Yzerman: Status for Monday in Doubt
Yzerman tweaked his groin injury in his second game back Saturday and it's not clear if he'll play Monday against San Jose, the Detroit Free Press reports.
If you have any other viable forward options for Monday or the week in full, please explore them. More info on the captain as we get it. Mark Mowers will dress as an extra forward if Yzerman can't go Monday.

Flyers' Stevenson expected out 2-3 months
October 17, 2005
VOORHEES, N.J. (AP) -- Philadelphia Flyers right wing Turner Stevenson will have surgery on his right hip and is expected to be sidelined two to three months.
He has torn cartilage and his operation is scheduled for Tuesday at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.
This is the second big injury of the season for the Flyers -- right wing Sami Kapanen is recovering from shoulder surgery last month.
The 33-year-old Stevenson signed as a free agent with the Flyers in July 2004. He played on New Jersey's 2003 Stanley Cup championship team.
Flyers coach Ken Hitchcock said Stevenson originally injured the hip while with the Devils. He took a cortisone injection last week and felt good enough to play against Pittsburgh, but took a hard hit in that game.
This is the second major injury of Stevenson's 11-year career. He missed most of the 2001-02 season after knee surgery.
``His leadership, it's amazing how quickly he acclimated here,'' captain Keith Primeau said. ``That's just a guy who's been around for a long time. He's had success, he's a winner, so he brings those experiences with him.''
General manager Bob Clarke said he has no of trading to acquire a veteran and will not call up a replacement from the AHL because of salary cap considerations. The Flyers will carry only 12 forwards into Saturday's game at Toronto.
Stevenson has 75 goals in 616 NHL career games.

DiPietro cleared to practice following concussion
October 16, 2005
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -- New York Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro will return to practice on Monday, four days after he sustained a concussion.
DiPietro was injured during Thursday night's 5-3 win at Washington when he was hit in the head by Jeff Halpern's leg as DiPietro was diving for a loose puck midway through the second period.
``He looks good and feels well,'' Islanders general manager Mike Milbury said Sunday. ``He has been cleared to play by our doctors.''
Garth Snow replaced DiPietro -- and got the win -- against the Capitals and then started Saturday at Philadelphia, making 41 saves in a 5-1 loss to the Flyers.
``If it wasn't for Garth, it might have been 20-1,'' Islanders coach Steve Stirling said.
New York sent Wade Dubielewicz back to Bridgeport of the AHL. Dubielewicz served as Snow's backup on Saturday night.
The Islanders will practice on Monday and Tuesday before starting a home-and-home series against the Rangers on Wednesday.

Insult to injury....we broke their goalie. ;)
BOSTON (AP) - Bruins goaltender Andrew Raycroft will be out for a week with a strained hamstring.
He was injured Wednesday night in a 4-3 overtime loss to Carolina.
Hannu Toivonen, a first-round pick in the 2002 NHL draft, probably will start in Raycroft's place. In three games this season, Toivonen has a 1-1 record and a 4.52 goals-against average.
The Bruins also called up rookie goaltender Jordan Sigalet on Thursday from Providence of the American Hockey League.
Raycroft won the Calder Trophy in 2004 as the NHL's top rookie. This season, he has played in nine games, going 3-4 with a 3.37 GAA.

PITTSBURGH (Ticker) - The Pittsburgh Penguins' first win of the 2005-06 season came at a high price.
One day after their 7-5 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers, the Penguins on Friday placed defenseman Dick Tarnstrom on injured reserve with a torn MCL ligament in his left knee.
Tarnstrom, 30, suffered the injury during the first period of Thursday's victory and will be out of the lineup indefinitely.
In his third season with the Penguins, Tarnstrom has recorded three goals and an assist in the team's first 10 games (1-4-5). He led Pittsburgh with 36 assists and 52 points in 2003-04 but had a minus-37 rating as the team posted league's worst record.

Keith Primeau: Out Indefinitely
Primeau missed Sunday night's game against the Ottawa Senators with concussion symptoms and is out indefinitely, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
On Tuesday in Montreal, the Canadiens' Alexander Perezhogin elbowed Primeau, but no penalty was called. A day later, Primeau said he was relieved to be feeling pretty good. However, Primeau said he began fighting concussion symptoms before Friday's loss in Carolina, playing in that game and going a minus-3. "It's a lot of similar symptoms from the last time," Primeau said, referring to the severe concussion he suffered Feb. 12, 2004, at Madison Square Garden. "Headaches and pressure. I don't feel right. I feel lethargic. It's not good." On his last concussion, Primeau took a blind hit from the New York Rangers' Bobby Holik and missed 21 games. Rookie R.J. Umberger, 23, made his NHL debut Sunday night and replaced Primeau in the lineup, centering Brian Savage and Branko Radivojevic. Primeau, meanwhile, will be tested and reevaluated in Philadelphia.

Cloutier suffered a concussion in Saturday's game against Colorado and is sidelined indefinitely, the Vancouver Sun reports. He is expected to miss a week of action at minimum.
"The doctor told me the symptoms could last one or two days or a long time," Cloutier said. Let's hope that his recovery will be a quick one as not having Cloutier for an extended amount of time will pose a very difficult task for the Canucks. Cloutier has won 30 or more games in each of the last three seasons, something only Martin Brodeur can lay claim to as well. Expect to see Alex Auld between the pipes for the three Canucks games this week.

Cloutier, 5-2-1 this season, hit his head on the goal post when Baumgartner ran him over while trying to check Colorado forward Andrew Brunette, who drove the net and scored on the play. Under NHL guidelines, Cloutier must be symptom-free for week before he can return.
Vancouver is expected to recall a goalie - likely rookie Rob McVicar because veteran Wade Flaherty would be subject to waivers - from AHL Manitoba in time for Wednesday's game against the Minnesota Wild

Kings put Armstrong on IR
LOS ANGELES (Ticker) - An injury in practice has landed Los Angeles Kings center Derek Armstrong on injured reserve.
On Tuesday, the Kings placed Armstrong on injured reserve, retroactive to October 25, with a groin injury.
The 32-year-old Armstrong, who has missed the last two games due to the injury, has two goals and and is tied for the team lead with seven assists in 10 contests this season. He set a career high with 14 goals with the Kings in 2003-04.
Armstrong could soon have company on the team's injured list as left wing Luc Robitaille has a fractured lower leg and will not accompany the team on its upcoming two-game road trip. Robitaille, 39, has four goals and three assists in 11 games this season and is 10th on the all-time list with 657 career tallies.
To replace Armstrong on their active roster, the Kings recalled defenseman Richard Petiot from Manchester of the American Hockey League. Petiot, who began the season on injured reserve with a rib contusion suffered in training camp, has not yet played in an NHL game.

Kings forward Robitaille out 2-4 weeks
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles Kings forward Luc Robitaille might miss two to four weeks with a fracture in his right leg.
The 39-year-old Robitaille had been playing despite the injury. But he felt persistent soreness in the leg, and an MRI revealed the fracture, the Kings said.
Robitaille has four goals and three assists this season.
The Kings also will be without defenceman Mike Weaver for their two-game road trip beginning Wednesday night in Dallas. He has a foot injury.
On Tuesday, the Kings placed center Derek Armstrong, who has a groin injury, on the injured list and recalled defenceman Richard Petiot from Manchester of the AHL.

Another goalie injury...what's the deal?
November 1, 2005
DETROIT (AP) -- Red Wings goalie Manny Legace left Detroit's game against the Chicago Blackhawks in the first period Tuesday night due to an apparent leg injury, and was not expected to return.
Chicago's Matthew Barnaby fell on Legace 3:23 into the game, with most of the defenseman's weight landing on Legace's left leg. Legace, who set an NHL record for wins in October with 10, was replaced by Chris Osgood.
Detroit defenseman Jiri Fischer retaliated against Barnaby and both players received 5-minute fighting penalties.

Leetch leaves with right knee injury
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -- Brian Leetch injured his right knee in the second period of the Boston Bruins' 4-3 overtime loss to the New York Islanders on Tuesday night and didn't return.
Leetch limped out of Nassau Coliseum without the use of crutches, but said he was sore and was wearing a brace. The 37-year-old defenseman, in his first season with the Bruins, has never had a knee injury since entering the NHL with the New York Rangers in 1988.
His first occurred with about three minutes left in the middle period when he collided with Islanders forward Shawn Bates as both went for the puck along the side wall.
``I didn't see the puck in the dasher, I thought it was going down the boards,'' Leetch said in a dejected tone. ``All of a sudden it was in front of me. So I went for it, and he dove and crashed into my knee.
``It was either his helmet or his shoulder that hit my knee.''
Bates scored the winning goal with only 28.2 seconds left in overtime.
Leetch, who signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Bruins this summer, expected to go for tests and to see doctors on Wednesday. Because he felt pain on the inside of his knee, the two-time Norris Trophy winner speculated that he injured his medial collateral ligament.
``Eighteen years ago, my left knee I hurt. I've never had a knee injury in the pros,'' Leetch said.
When asked if a week off the ice might be the best-case scenario, Leetch was able to smile and crack a joke.
``Best case, I'll be better tomorrow,'' he said.
Boston coach Mike Sullivan didn't have details about Leetch's injury immediately after the game, and no doctors examined the defenseman. Sullivan was already figuring that Leetch wouldn't play Thursday when the Bruins return home to face Florida.
``They don't think it's real serious but obviously enough to keep him out of our lineup,'' Sullivan said.
Leetch, who grew up in Connecticut and played one season at Boston College, spent his first 17-plus NHL seasons with the Rangers before being dealt to Toronto at the 2004 trade deadline. This was his first game back in the New York metropolitan area.
He hasn't faced the Rangers anywhere since the trade.
Leetch has three goals and five assists in 14 games this season. In 1,158 regular-season games -- all but 29 spent with New York -- Leetch has 245 goals and 759 assists. He ranks seventh on the career points list among NHL defenseman with 1,004.
This just added to the Bruins' injury woes.
Boston is already without top goalie Andrew Raycroft (hamstring); defenseman Ian Moran (knee); center Alex Zhamnov (shoulder); and right winger Pat Leahy (broken finger).
The Bruins had former Islanders forward Brad Isbister back in the lineup Tuesday, following a three-game absence due to a groin injury. But he also left in the second period after he hurt it again.

Sabres rookie goalie Ryan Miller on injured reserve with broken thumb
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - The Buffalo Sabres placed rookie goaltender Ryan Miller on injured reserve Thursday with a broken right thumb.
He's expected to be out six to eight weeks and will have screws put into his thumb Friday. He suffered the injury during practice on Wednesday. "It's disappointing, but it's something where I can heal up and come back," Miller said. Martin Biron and Mika Noronen will play in goal during Miller's absence. Biron will start Friday when Buffalo hosts Montreal.
The Sabres also placed defenceman Toni Lydman on injured reserve. He hurt his groin against New Jersey Oct. 28.
Miller was hurt stopping a shot during the team's morning skate before Wednesday's 10-4 loss to Ottawa. He was attempting to redirect the puck, but it rode up his stick and struck him flush on the thumb.
Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said the injury was an indirect result of new rules instituted before this season. The league limited the dimensions of certain goaltending equipment, including the blocker that protects the stick hand.
"He said it actually caught him where they reduced the size of the blocker, where they took some of the padding away," Ruff said after practice Thursday. "It's just unfortunate."
Miller started all but one of Buffalo's games before Wednesday's defeat, going 6-4 with a 2.77 goals-against average. His six wins in October were one shy of Ed Belfour's NHL record for most by a rookie during the month. Belfour went 7-3-0 with Chicago in 1990.
To replace Miller and Lydman, the Sabres recalled forwards Derek Roy and Jason Pominville from their AHL affiliate in Rochester.
This is unfortunate.

MRI confirms Nash knee injury; expected to miss four to six weeks
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - An MRI has confirmed that Columbus Blue Jackets forward Rick Nash sprained his left knee last week, and he will miss four to six weeks, the club said Monday.
Nash, 21, the No. 1 pick in the 2002 draft, injured his knee when he was hit in the third period of Thursday night's 2-1 loss in Calgary. He has played in just three of Columbus' 15 games this season after spraining his right ankle in training camp.
Nash had the MRI after the Blue Jackets returned home from a West Coast trip following Friday night's 5-3 loss in Vancouver.

Just seven weeks after having torn cartilage repaired in his right shoulder, Flyers winger Sami Kapanen was back at practice Monday, the Philadelphia Daily News reports. And then the next thing I know I'm in shoulder surgery.

Devils: Brodeur aggravates MCL
Devils goalie Martin Brodeur practiced a half-hour with the team yesterday, then left the ice still pained by his right knee's medial collateral ligament, which he sprained October 26, the New York Post reports. "I've plateaued," Brodeur said. "The pain hasn't gone away. It's the same as it was three days ago. The improvement suddenly came to a halt. It's tender to the touch. When I go down on one knee, I feel it."
This means that Scott Clemmensen will be called upon to try and end the Devils' three-game losing streak when they host the Islanders Tuesday. Consider Brodeur day-to-day and don't expect him starting this week.

Thrashers lose Dunham to groin injury
November 15, 2005
ATLANTA (AP) -- Mike Dunham was placed on injured reserve Tuesday after hurting his groin in yet another injury to an Atlanta Thrashers goaltender.
The injury happened Saturday at Carolina, although it is not related to an earlier groin injury that sidelined him. Dunham has gone 4-3-1 with one shutout and a 2.10 goal-against average in eight games.
The team recalled goaltender Michael Garnett from Chicago of the AHL.
The Thrashers' starting goaltender is Adam Berkhoel. Goalie Steve Shields is on the active roster but is recovering from a knee injury. Projected starter Kari Lehtonen has been out since injuring his groin in the opener and is not expected back this month.
Atlanta plays host to the New York Islanders on Wednesday night.

Avalanche winger Konowalchuk out for season due to wrist injury
DENVER (CP) - Colorado Avalanche winger Steve Konowalchuk needs surgery to repair torn ligaments in his right wrist and will miss the remainder of the season, the team announced Sunday.
Konowalchuk suffered the injury in a game against the Calgary Flames on Nov. 21.
"Further examination along with an MRI confirmed that Steve has torn ligaments in his right wrist and that surgery is necessary," Avalanche head trainer Matt Sokolowski said in a statement. "We anticipate the recovery time to be between six and seven months."
Konowalchuk, who has six goals and nine assists in 21 games this season, will have the operation sometime in the next few days.
Meanwhile, the team recalled centre Brad Richardson from their American Hockey League affiliate in Lowell, Mass.
Richardson has spent all of this season with the Lock Monsters, recording three goals and 10 assists in 17 games.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Flyers goalie Robert Esche will miss at least a week of action because of an injury that might be a sports hernia.
For now, the team is describing Esche's ailment as a pulled groin. An MRI taken Friday revealed a slight tendon tear and inflammation in his right groin. Esche will visit a specialist on Monday, and Philadelphia trainer Jim McCrossin said the Flyers want to rule out a sports hernia.
"The symptoms of one mimic the symptoms of the other," McCrossin said.
If the injury is just a strain, Esche could be back in a week. But a sports hernia would require surgery and keep him out for a month or longer. That could jeopardize his chances of being picked for the U.S. Olympic team that will play in Turin, Italy, in February.
Esche is 10-4-2 with a 3.18 goals-against average this season. He stopped 30 shots in his last start, a 2-1 win over the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday.

Head coach Ken Hitchcock sat in his office Wednesday, waiting to hear news on the latest of his Philadelphia Flyers players to go down.
Veteran defenceman Eric Desjardins is out with a sprained shoulder, and he may have difficulty forcing his way into a medical ward already stuffed with eight other bodies.
"It's just like, we play a game, then we wait on (injury) news," Hitchcock said from Philadelphia.
A quick recap:
- Superstar centre Peter Forsberg (groin) has missed five games.
- Rising star defenceman Joni Pitkanen (sports hernia) is out four to six weeks.
- Starting goalie Robert Esche (groin) has missed a week.
- Defenceman Dennis Seidenberg (broken wrist) has been out since Nov. 19.
- Winger Turner Stevenson (hip flexor) has missed four games.
- Winger Brian Savage (sprained MCL) also out since Nov. 19.
- Checking centre and captain Keith Primeau (concussion) is out indefinitely.
- Winger Ryan Ready (abdominal strain) is day to day.
"We've had a run of tough luck on injuries, that's for sure, holy mackerel," GM Bob Clarke said. "I can't remember really having a year like this."
But through it all, the Flyers keep finding a way, going 5-2-3 in their last 10 games. Credit Hitchcock, one of the game's true masterminds, credit Clarke and his staff for depth through shrewd signings and drafting, and credit the kids.
"I think we're just getting a really good team effort from all of our players," said Clarke. "And our young players have been so responsible. They've been forced into key situations and they're playing like they've been here for 10 years.
"These guys are 25 games into their NHL careers and they're doing 17-18 minutes a night with the power play and penalty killing, important faceoffs and everything."
Richards, for one, has answered the bell during this stretch. He replaced Forsberg on the big line with Simon Gagne and Mike Knuble on Tuesday night, played more than 18 minutes, and scored the shootout winner.
Richards says he welcomed the extra responsibilities.
"I have enjoyed that actually," the 19-year-old said after practice. "It's been fun playing in different situations, penalty kill, power play a little bit. Just going to the rink every day and knowing you're going to play in key situations, that's a nice feeling."
From Richards to Jeff Carter to R.J. Umberger to Jon Sim, the young guys are plugging the holes left by Forsberg and others and getting the job done.
"I think the biggest thing for us is those guys that played for the Phantoms last year have really helped us," said Hitchcock. "Not just the junior guys like Carter and Richards but all those guys that played in the AHL last year like Sim, Umberger, Freddy Meyer, Randy Jones and Ryan Ready - they're all gritty, competitive guys and they're keeping us afloat right now to be honest with you."
Richards has been the most impressive of the young group, sporting a plus-10 rating along with his 16 points (5-11) in 24 games this season.
"Things have gone pretty well, the transition has been somewhat smooth," Richards said. "There's bumps in the road obviously, but the guys in the dressing room have really treated us well and made it comfortable for us. It's fun playing at the highest level in the world."
The Flyers, who host Edmonton on Thursday, sit fourth in the Eastern Conference at 16-6-4. They need to hold on for about one more week before reinforcements arrive.
"The cavalry is on the way," Hitchcock said. "Today we've got five guys who are starting to skate: Seidenberg, Stevenson, Savage, Forsberg and Esche all skating in various forms today. So that's good news, we're going to need it."
Esche could be back as early as this weekend while Forsberg is day to day.
With Desjardins and Pitkanen out for a while, that leaves a few holes on the Flyers' blue-line. In the old days Clarke would remedy that with a trade. But that's more difficult now because of the salary cap. The Flyers don't have a lot of room left under the $39-million US limit.
"We're lucky that our minor-league team is right beside us," said Clarke. "Because we call these guys up and play them and then send them right back down because the cap money is adding so much on us on a daily basis."
He feels bad for the guys going back and forth from the AHL to NHL, but he doesn't have a choice because of the cap.
"We have one player (Ready), we called him up from the Phantoms, he played five shifts and got hurt," said Clarke, who then had to send him back down to save money.
"Those kinds of things are unfair towards the cap in my opinion. Because a kid gets called up and he gets hurt and I think we should have to pay his (NHL) salary, which is correct, because he got hurt playing for us. But to use that money against the cap for every day that he's out, that adds up pretty fast."
As it stands, Clarke may not have that much leeway under the cap to make a big move at the March trade deadline. Unless, of course, someone takes on a salary in return.
"The way it's going for us now, we won't have any money left," Clarke said.
Because of the injuries and the players going back and forth from the AHL between games, Flyers practices have been affected.
"We haven't had a full hockey practice - where you could say we had two goalies, six defencemen and four lines - in almost a month now," said Hitchcock.
"But I guess what doesn't kill you makes you stronger."

Flyers defenseman Desjardins to miss eight to 10 weeks with shoulder injury
VOORHEES, N.J. (AP) - Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Eric Desjardins is expected to miss eight-to-10 weeks because of a dislocated right shoulder that will require surgery to fix.
Desjardins, 36, was injured Tuesday night in a collision with Calgary's Darren McCarty during the first period of the Flyers' 1-0 win in a shootout. He will be operated on next Tuesday by team orthopedist Peter DeLuca.
Desjardins, chosen seven times as the Flyers' most outstanding defenseman, had surgery on the same shoulder four years ago. He also missed eight games this season due to a concussion.
In seven games since returning, Desjardins had one goal and no assists.
It is the latest blow to Philadelphia's defense corps. Joni Pitkanen underwent surgery on Wednesday to have a torn abdominal muscle repaired. The 22-year-old Pitkanen is expected to be out for a month.
Pitkanen had emerged this season - his second in the NHL - as an offense force. In 25 games, he had eight goals and 15 assists and was a plus-18. Desjardins had two goals and 12 assists in 18 contests.
"When you're dealing with two 20-plus minute players, we have to take a hard look at what we're doing there," coach Ken Hitchcock said Wednesday.
The Flyers have nine players sidelined by injuries, including captain Keith Primeau who has missed 17 games with a concussion and is out indefinitely. Philadelphia hopes to get defenseman Dennis Seidenberg (broken wrist) back for Thursday's game against Edmonton.
Hitchcock said he plans to divide his six healthy defensemen into two groups on special teams. Derian Hatcher, Mike Rathje and Chris Therien will concentrate on penalty killing and Kim Johnsson, Freddy Meyer and Seidenberg will work on the power play.
