That's exactly the type of score that brings fans to the house...
That's what the NHL wanted to happen by these new rules. I hope it works...and scores stay high.

It's going to be so strange to see some many of "our" old players popping up in score sheets all over the league. Take a while to get used to it.
Like tonight, I notice the Islanders are leading the Rangers.
Kevin Weekes in the box score having played the first 30 mins of the game. (4 goals on 12 shots - 3 were on the PP though).
Just gonna be strange.

I'm actually watching the Rangers/Islanders game on FoxsportsNY- excellent to see J. Davidson, Stan Rosen and Joe Michelletti- Stan Fischler is doing intermission interviews with the players- Seeing Weekes in a Rangers jersey is slightly wierd- followed only by the 'sight' of Marek Malik screening Weekes on the first two goals he had no chance on-
Also in family related matters- Marc Staal has made his Ranger's debut, logging many minutes- being praised profusely by Rosen and Davidson, and getting interviewed by Fischler during 2nd intermission. Wearing the #67 for the Blueshirts. The praise on Marc goes something like this "He has such poise- similar to his big brother Eric" "looks too comfortable out there for only 18- the Ranger will have a big decision on whether to return him to his Junior team" blah, blah, blah. Sounds familiar- good for the kid. Fischler can't stop raving about him, asked him about Eric and 'the two other Staals looking to make it a family business" LOL.
Side note on this game- the Islanders have apparently gotten a good grasp on the 'new rules' while the Rangers.............. not so much. Young Staal has taken 4 rookie penalties, while the others are just all over the place
I must be crazy watching the Rangers/Isles- but I'm just so glad to see hockey on TV, I'm all over it. If I wasn't going to the game tommorow, I'd be watching the Dallas/Det game on Foxsports Southwest  but lucky for me, I get to see my Canes ;) .

HAMILTON (CP) - Ed Belfour isn't over the hill yet, and Jeff O'Neill and Mariusz Czerkawski might have productive seasons left in them, too.
The three veterans played prominent roles in the Toronto Maple Leafs' 5-0 exhibition win over Boston on Tuesday night, and head coach Pat Quinn will be hoping they all fare as well when the real games begin Oct. 5.
Belfour stopped all 14 Bruins shots in the 30 minutes he played in his first turn in the creases, other than intrasquad game last week, since the 2004 playoffs.
A familiar "Eddie, Eddie, Eddie" chant erupted from the capacity Copps Coliseum crowd of 18,000 when he frustrated Joe Thornton during a two-man Boston advantage. Belfour is 40 now but, heck, Johnny Bower was 42 when he helped the Leafs win their last NHL title in 1967.
O'Neill and Czerkawski, discarded by their previous teams, each scored.
Power-play goals by O'Neill and Ben Ondrus put Toronto up 2-0 in the first period.
[b]Quinn used O'Neill on the point when Toronto got an early two-man advantage, and the six-foot-one right-winger blasted a shot past goalie Hannu Toivonen at 6:51.
O'Neill, 29, spent his first nine NHL seasons with the Carolina franchise, amassing 416 points including 198 goals in 673 regular-season games. But he scored only 14 times in 2003-2004. His wish to play for his home-city Leafs was fulfilled when he was acquired in July for a fourth-round 2006 draft pick.
"It was fun to score the goal but it wasn't as important as getting the win," O'Neill said after his debut in blue and white. "We wanted to get a win and get this thing rollin'."
Yet, he had to admit that, "Seeing all the players who've worn this sweater while I was growing up, it's quite an honour to put it on."
Ondrus, standing in the middle of the Boston zone, slammed in a nifty John Pohl pass from the side boards at 8:08.
The two are likely headed to the AHL farm, where Ondrus, 23, the former WHL junior star with the Swift Current Broncos, spent last winter. Pohl, 26, an American who was a college standout at Minnesota, played in the AHL at Worcester, Mass., last season and was acquired from St. Louis last month for a draft pick.
Jean-Francois Racine took over from Belfour in the middle of the second period and was just as sharp.
Czerkawski, skating on a line with youngsters Matt Stajan and Alexander Steen, scored at 11:05 of the second when he slapped a shot through Toivonen's legs.
"I had better chances in the first period, but that's hockey," said the 33-year-old Polish right-winger. "I hit the goalie in the head with my first shot and lifted a shot over the cross bar with my second shot.
"I'm just happy the third try went in."
Czerkawski has 425 points including 207 goals in 710 NHL games with Boston, Edmonton, Montreal and the New York Islanders. He scored 25 for the Isles in 2003-2004 but GM Mike Milbury didn't appreciate his playoff fade.
Leafs regular Darcy Tucker added another at 19:08 on a Kyle Wellwood feed from behind the net on a power play.
Defenceman Alexander Khavanov picked up three assists. The six-foot-two Russian, 33, was signed during the summer. He was an unrestricted free agent after playing four years for St. Louis. The Blues apparently had no interest in keeping him, but he might be good enough to catch on with the Leafs.
"It's been a while since my last game in the NHL so I wanted to go out there and enjoy it," said Khavanov," who was named first star.
Pohl deflected a puck past Tim Thomas, who'd replaced Toivonen to start the third period, for yet another power-play goal with 2:18 left.
Toronto had lost 5-2 last Sunday at home against Ottawa, while Boston was playing its pre-season opener. The Leafs' edge in experience with the referees' crackdown on obstruction was obvious. There was a parade of Bruins to the penalty box. Toronto was 4-for-13 on power plays, while Boston was 0-for-5.
"We were a little bit better," Quinn said of an effort that was much more satisfying than the loss to the Senators. "All in all, it was a good outing, but we've got a lot of work to do."

Wow - Weekes evening had a bad omen from the start!
Notes: The preseason started on an ominous note as a loose strap caused goalie Kevin Weekes to trip as he stepped onto the ice for pre-game warm-ups. He then allowed three goals on the first four shots. ... Rookie defenseman Marc Staal had a solid game but needed what appeared to be five stitches over his right eye.

Anyone else who watched the Blue Jackets-Blackhawks game LOVE the Blue Jackets' goalie (Popperle)? He was awesome in the shootout! He was forcing the Chi players to shoot before they got even close to the goal because if they got at all close to him he came out and poked the puck right away from them...every single time!! Needless to say Columbus won the shootout (even though Chicago had Khabi in net).

SHC- I just saw your post- and did catch that game- holy moly, who is Popperle??? and wasn't it nice to be able to see the shoot out- unlike listening to Chuck who says he won't call the shootouts til they are 'for real' (??)
Back to Popperle- that dude was great. He had Ruutu out there, Rene Bourque and Eric Daze- and 2 didn't get real shots off....
And did you catch the between the legs attempt by Nicolai Zherdev? He almost faked Khabhulin (who looked so out of place in that B-hawks gear lol) on that one- and if he had made it, woa.

yep. but San Jose has a very low GF. Ottawa has the highest, we had the second highest (25) through 7 games.
now weve got 31 for, Ottawa still has something like 2 games left to play, Philly has 2 games (27 GF), LA has 34 GF but no games left...
the way its shaping up, we should end up in the top 5 or so in GF in the preseason. not too shabby.

SHC- I hope you saw this game tonight- or any other DirecTVers with the sports package- On NESN tonight, it was the B's vs the Rangers- and the Rangers lost 5-2..... the Bruins look very ready to for the season- some pretty goals by Glen Murray, Brad Boyes, and Bergeron- anyway, for all you folks who followed the Monsters last season - one of Staal/Kobasew/Forbes' nemisis- Joe Rullier who last played for Manchester-and never wanted to drop gloves with Brant Myhers after going out of his way to try and mess with the Staal line- is in the Rangers lineup trying to make it as a tough guy- anyway, Rullier dropped gloves with Colton Orr, and it was a heavyweight bout-with Orr literally rearranging Rullier's face- (broken nose, blood everywhere ewww) Orr then drops gloves with resident Ranger tough guy Dale Purinton, who tried to scratch out Orr's eyes and got an intent to injure penalty and a misconduct..... the sideline announcer for the B's then reports- "oh, by the way, the Orr/Rullier matchup- Rullier had his nose re-set and I got to watch" and he was like really proud of that....
So my 'fear' that the tough guy role would be rendered obsolete basically is unfounded LOL.
Some other notes on the NESN broadcast- they had alot of behind the bench chatter- Coach Sullivan was miked up- really good stuff- talking to d-man Ian Moran on what he wanted him to do out there next shift- then giving Samsonov some 'love' asking him how his first shift back on the ice was going-telling him he looked good out there- and then Sullivan trying to work the ref on a call he didn't think should've been- - stuff like that- they call it 'ice shavings'- and they have a new studio etc. I'll be excited to see what kind of stuff Foxsports does for our broadcasts- especially the in game microphone stuff.
Entertaining game if you are a B's fan- now if there are still Ranger fans out there- it doesn't look too good. Poor Lundquist- left hung out to dry a couple times by good old Malik.

Rangers Devils tonight was awesome. Weekes looks solid and did well in the shootout too. Devils are a force to be reckoned with> The new rules for handling the puck have affected Brodeur little. he just comes out and gets the puck in front of the goal line now, passes it to a full speed forward in a "two line pass" and the guy is in front of weekes shooting before you know it. I think the elimination of the two line pass has benefited Brodeur more than any of the new rules have harmed him.
And Jagr still has it. With the obstruction rules he was free flying out there. Put on this one movethat was freakin' amazing. He's coming down right wing full speed, he fakes the puck back behind him left handed as if he is suddenly going to cut to the center of the ice. Then suddenly brings the puck all the way forward and comes in front of the defender, fakes a shot to get Brodeur down, then suddenly it's in the back of the net under Brodeur's leg as he tries to scramble up to reposition. More flow to this game too. medium amount of penalties and the players were playing more responsibly with regard to the new rules. No monster hits though. One fight.

Even though it's only one night of games, I would certainly say that the NHL's plan of increasing scoring is on the right track. Looking around the night's scores, only 1 goose egg so far. 7 games have seen 5 or more goals scored by one team. 10 guys so far have scored 2 goals in their one game. it's tricky to tell how much of it is the goalies shaking the rust off and how much is due to the rules changes. what do you all think?

Watching the highlights on ESPN, it was really cool to see Brian Gionta snatch the puck out of the net for Zach Parise when he scored his first NHL goal.
Also, Jagr needs some sort of license for that laser.
BTW, the Boston Cup-tossing was due to a marginal (new-style) hooking call that led to the GWG.

I don't think he'll get the C ...
Renney to see who'll wear 'C'
BY STEVE ZIPAY
STAFF CORRESPONDENT • NEWSDAY
October 6, 2005
PHILADELPHIA -- With Game One of the regular season behind them, the Rangers still have not named a captain to replace Mark Messier. As was the case during the preseason, three players - Jaromir Jagr, Darius Kasparaitis and Steve Rucchin - wore the alternate "A's" last night.
Don't expect a quick selection, either, coach Tom Renney said.
"I think it's really important that I get to know these guys better and it's fair to them that they get to know me better and my expectations," Renney said last night. "This club, under the circumstances, requires good sound leadership and it could, in fact, come by committee, at least at this time. We're not going to rush to judgment ... I'm not under pressure to name anyone."
Jagr essentially turned down the opportunity in camp, and there is no clear choice. Virtually all other NHL teams have named captains. The Devils haven't, although it is expected that Patrik Elias, who is injured, will be named once he returns.

NHL returns with packed arenas, single-date attendance record
More Than A Quarter-Million Fans Attend Games On League's Busiest Night Ever
NEW YORK (October 5, 2005) -- National Hockey League fans ushered in the 2005-06 regular season tonight by packing arenas to more than 98% capacity and establishing a single-date record for total attendance. Eleven of the 15 games were sellouts.
A total of 275,447 fans attended the 15 opening-night games, an average of 18,363 per game and 98.1% of capacity. The total eclipsed the previous high of 259,873, set Feb. 15, 2003 in 14 games.
Tonight's record attendance is reflective of the strong ticket sales throughout the League this season:
* The League-wide average season ticket renewal percentage of 87.7% is an increase of 3% over 2003-04.
* Twenty-four clubs have sold at least 1,000 new season tickets/equivalents to date and at least 11 of those clubs have sold more than 2,000.
* Sales of single-game tickets hit record numbers in September with more than a half-million tickets sold, including 124,000 on Sept. 17 alone.
"We are thrilled by and grateful for the tremendous response we have received from our fans, whose loyalty and passion are unrivaled," said Commissioner Gary Bettman.
Wednesday's biggest crowd was in Tampa Bay, where 22,120 fans filled the St. Pete Times Forum as the Lightning raised their 2004 Stanley Cup banner prior to the home-opener against the Carolina Hurricanes. With season ticket packages reducing available seats for opening night to fewer than 2,500 amid phenomenal ticket demand for the upcoming season, the Lightning had to institute a lottery to equitably distribute remaining tickets for this game.
The Minnesota Wild, who have sold out all 188 home games in club history (pre-season, regular season and playoffs), drew a franchise-record crowd of 19,398 to Xcel Energy Center for their season-opener against the Calgary Flames.
With all 30 clubs in action, Wednesday marked the busiest playing date in the League's 88-year history. NHL teams had combined to play as many as 14 games on nine occasions, the most recent of which was Nov. 1, 2003. It also marked the first time that all NHL clubs were in action on the
schedule's opening night since 1928-29, when 10 clubs were featured. The last time all clubs in a major pro sports league played on the opening date of the schedule was in 1969, when the National Football League kicked off with all 16 NFL clubs and 10 AFL clubs participating.
Well, would you look at what a little positive publicity in place of the whining over our "broken" game can get you! Even after a lockout.
There are some nifty little charts on NHL.com showing each game's numbers and the top ten highest NHL attendance numbers but I didn't feel like messing with the formatting. Check them out here (http://www.nhl.com/news/2005/10/237032.html) if you're interested.

Watched the CI feed of the Rangers/Montreal game tonight. Went to OT and the Rangers lost on Kevin Weekes a softie. Montreal player took a shot (a speedball, I might add), which went off Shady's equipment and over his right shoulder. Should have been stopped, IMHO. We had the game on for a bit earlier. When we first turned it on, the Habs were on a PP, but the Rangers were clearing the zone or preventing them from crossing the blueline pretty easily. I said "I wonder if Weekes is in goal again" (they hadn't panned that far down the ice yet) and my kids were like "oh yeah, he's a Ranger?". And then the puck got past Malik, sent across the ice beautifully to Ryder who put it in. In unison they said "yeah, that's Weekes".
Actually, it was really just because they'd recognized him, but the timing on the comment was funny.

Yeah, SoCal, I was thinking "only in LA".
Did everyone see Gertzky's big screw up? Evidently they tried to play Sjostrom when he hadn't been submitted on the official roster. It was sorta ugly to see Wayne squirm on the bench. He sorta appeared to try and blame his assistant coach.
I hope his coaching tenure won't turn out to be a comedy of errors. It would be a real shame to see.

Was it me or did it looked like he (Gretzky) turned red...not from anger, but from embarrassment.
And I was amused by Avery screeming at LeClerc from penalty box to penalty box calling him a 'p****' about 3000 times when it seemed like LeClerc got lots of good punches in. Just cracks me up when you can cheap shot someone in the face and then call someone else a 'p****'.

Here's the TSN story....
Gretzky makes lineup error in loss to Kings
Associated Press
10/7/2005 12:36:24 AM
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Wayne Gretzky committed the first major mistake of his NHL coaching career against his old team, and nearly got away with it.
The Los Angeles Kings defeated the Phoenix Coyotes 3-2 on Thursday night, Gretzky's second loss in as many nights behind the bench.
The rookie coach was responsible for a mixup in Phoenix's lineup at the start of the game. Right wing Fredrik Sjostrom was on the ice despite being listed as a scratch.
Los Angeles coach Andy Murray knew it and even double-checked the rule book, but had planned on keeping quiet unless Phoenix scored with Sjostrom on the ice, which would have nullified the goal.
But the Kings' stat crew noticed Sjostrom and alerted referees, who ruled Sjostrom ineligible for the rest of the game. Phoenix center Petr Nedved was the actual scratch, but he was listed as being available.
A subdued Gretzky called it an oversight that was ``just inexcusable.''
"It's my responsibility," he said. "It just was utter nonsense that it happened and I feel bad for Freddie and I feel bad for the team. It happened and it won't happen again."
Murray downplayed Gretzky's rookie mistake, saying, ``It happens all the time. I'm sure it's happened to me before.''
Murray said he would have rather had a goal nullified than have the Coyotes lose a player.
"We didn't want to call it until we needed it," he said. "But unfortunately, the guys upstairs were doing their job and they realized they had the wrong guy."
As coach, Gretzky signs the lineup sheet before the game. Murray empathized with Gretzky, saying he has an assistant fill out the lineup and double-check it before he signs.
"I mean, you're so used to writing the same names down," Murray said. "I'm afraid I might make that mistake."
After losing their season opener 5-4 in Dallas on Wednesday, the Kings came out energized for their first regular-season home game in 1 1/2 years.
Alexander Frolov scored the go-ahead goal on a power play in the second period for the Kings.
The Coyotes had a man advantage for most of the final minute, but didn't score. They lost 3-2 at Vancouver on Wednesday.
The coaching milestone of the night belonged to Murray, who became the club's all-time winningest coach with his 179th victory.
"Who would have picked me out of Shattuck's St. Mary's first of all to get the job?" Murray said. "So I'm just fortunate I've got the job."
Gretzky was still the attraction, though.
The sellout crowd of 18,118 cheered loudly when he was shown on the scoreboard late in the second period. He looked up, smiled and gave a brief wave as the song "Simply the Best" blared in Staples Center, where his retired No. 99 jersey hangs on the wall. A bronze statue of him stands outside the building, where he never played.
"When I became a King, they always treated me great," he said.
Gretzky spent eight seasons in Los Angeles, leading the Kings to the Stanley Cup finals in 1993 and surpassing Gordie Howe as hockey's all-time leading goal scorer at the old Forum in Inglewood.
Upon arriving from Edmonton in 1988, Gretzky popularized hockey in Southern California, which led to NHL teams in such other warm weather climates as Arizona, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. He was traded to St. Louis in 1996 and retired with the New York Rangers in 1999.
Dressed in a tie and camel jacket, Gretzky was a low-key presence on the Coyotes' bench. At times, he watched the action with his arms folded.
Gretzky said losing as a coach is different than as a player.
"When you're coaching, you think about it all night," he said. "It drags on with you a little bit longer, but that's OK, I love it."
Jason Labarbera made 27 saves for his second NHL victory, and first since the 2003-04 season when he played four games with the New York Rangers.
"He was great," Kings newcomer Jeremy Roenick said. "He stayed sharp and made some big saves when we needed them, especially on a couple of their power plays."
David Leneveu stopped 25 shots for the Coyotes, who cut their deficit to 3-2 on a power-play rebound goal by Oleg Saprykin in the second period.
The Kings scored two power-play goals in second for a 3-1 lead. Frolov put away a rebound of Pavol Demitra's miss at 8:28. Then with Phoenix's Sean O'Donnell sent off for a delay of game, Demitra scored through Leneveu's legs at 11:28.
"Last night was really deflating," Roenick said. "For us to come back with an energy-filled game shows that this team is ready and poised for a lot of hard work. It's really gratifying."
The Kings tied the game 1-1 on Luc Robitaille's first goal of the season, a slap shot from the left faceoff circle that sailed above Leneveu's glove at 15:58 of the first.
The Coyotes led 1-0 on a power-play goal by Krystofer Kolanos with 9:52 remaining in the first. Kolanos scored on a shot from the left side with 25 seconds left in a high-sticking penalty against Nathan Dempsey. Brett Hull and Saprykin assisted.
Notes: Murray broke Bob Pulford's franchise record for most career wins. Pulford coached five seasons in the mid-1970s. ... Robitaille needs eight goals to surpass Marcel Dionne as the Kings' career goal scorer. ... Kings LW Jeff Cowan injured his groin and didn't return for the third period.

Luongo: TWo shutouts in a row with help from Sean Hill.
And look at tonight's box score of San Jose vs Blackhawks. First of all the Blackhawks finally won a good game. But look at how many fighting penalties and penalties (intent to injure type) that occurred in the time before 5 minutes remaining in the 3rd. They had 3 or more fights just before then thus avoiding instigation and a fine for the player and coach. San Jose just wanted to fight.

After being shut out by Luongo in their opener, Atlanta has put up 15 goals in 2 games against the Capitals. I wonder what they'll put up on them now that Kovalchuk is joining the team?

I so desparately want to keep track of how many "extra points" are being handed out this year due to the shootouts. Games should not have 3 points to give out! Grr! It's bad enough with the OT loss point, but there were more ties than OT winners in the 5 minute period, so it wasn't such a big deal.
Now, every single game that goes to OT means 3 points among the 2 teams. Somebody is going home with 2, somebody is going home with 1. Ottawa -- beat these teams in regulation, please!

Sounds like an "Oh sh*t!!!" moment!

DAMN - they just showed Phoenix' goalie's stats from Cornell from 01-03. 39-5-something, 1.29GAA, 11 shutouts. I know it's Cornell, but still - that's impressive to say the least...

I guess it is Dish causing all of the problems? OLN doesn't have hockey on as they are supposed to, but they switched to the OLN feed in the Philly game while we wait for them to figure out how to turn the lights on. freakin ridiculous.

Jeez, I thought the ACC was a new building.
Glad the lights are finally back on. I didn't want to watch the Dallas/Phoenix game.

They're about to make me cry with all the talk of his brother. Not to mention him pointing to the sky.
The fact that it was a go ahead goal sorta un-mixed my emotions, lol. If the Leafs lose I might manage to be happy for him. At the moment I'm mostly just sad it couldn't have been for us.

And now Lindros has to get in on the party.
I like O's goal (and reaction) better.
C'mon, Flyers!!
I must say, the officiating in this game has seemed damn lopsided to me.

Damn, this HAD to be the Leafs' first freakin' win.
Well, maybe it helps a little that they would have won even without O'Neill's goal.
O gets the #2 star. Jerk. ;)

Just finished watching the Leafs game. Good for Jeff and the GW goal to boot. After this summer, I hope that he has a great season, 30+ goals.
What's up with the Flyers?

Were you guys able to watch any of the Montreal game? Hubby was able to watch part of it and then all of a sudden we got a "Game Dropped" message and couldn't get it. We got Leafs/Flyers ok (although I don't know if we had the same trouble the first few minutes).

that officiating was unbelievably horrible. philly would get called for a light tap on the leg (slashing)... yet, there were a few boardings in a row, using an elbow.. and nothing.
hell, they even had icings waved off that were Clearly icing. by the end of the game I think I was in shok that it was SO lopsided.
ugly.

this is rather reminiscent of things I've read about the Canes over the years. heh. you could almost replace "Flyers" with "Canes" and replace the players names, and it'd be an article for us. ;) (though hopefully not this season)
(from a flyers correspondent on espn)
If winning and losing was determined by how many times you can shoot the puck into the opposing goalies' chest, the Flyers would go through every season undefeated. Last night's game epitomized the last half-decade of Flyers' hockey. We have a deep team with alot of big names, but noone can finish.
After a 20 minute delay due to the house lights being out, the Flyers dominated the action in the 2nd period. Unfortunately, they could only muster one Simon Gagne goal against Leafs' back-up goaltender Mikael Tellqvist. The Flyers have an uncanny way of making an ordinary goalie look like a superstar.
Towards the end of the 2nd period, the Leafs, who were playing the 2nd game in as many nights, looked like they were completely gassed. But, after a few questionable calls in the 3rd period, Jeff O'Neil and the Big E burried home two PP goals. The Flyers special teams woes continue as the PP is now 1 for 19 and the PK has surrendered 5 PP goals in 19 kills.

Kubina just got a game misconduct in the TB/BUF game for mouthing off at the ref about a cross-checking call. I don't blame him. It wasn't any different than any little tap on the back any player gets when he's trying to plant his butt in front of the net except that Vanek went down like a bag of bricks.
Seriously, I feel like they've been calling goal-tender interference more so far this season but still, I'm not sure Brodeur doesn't have a point. What are players supposed to do to get opposing players off their goaltender if any little touch is gonna get called?
Anyway, the TB/BUF game is in a shootout.

Tonight the Thrashers take on the Leafs.
Goalie curse going on with the Thrashers. They have their backup backup probably in goal tonight.
He better stand on his head or they are toast. Thrashers D pretty much leaves alot to be desired.
