The Fourth PeriodÂ*-Â*It's been said that this year's NHL Entry Draft will be one of the finest in recent memory. The Montreal Canadiens know this, and they want to cash in.
Â*
According to La Presse, Habs general manager André Savard will be making offers to the Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes and Pittsburgh Penguins - the team's holding the top 3 picks in the draft.
Â*
The team most willing to deal, according to the newspaper, is Carolina. The Habs are willing to give the 'Canes a solid package and may offer one of their top prospects in order to get a deal done. The Canadiens are also looking to deal defenseman Patrice Brisebois and forwards Yanic Perreault and Andreas Dackell, among others.
Is there any way we could get them to part with Theodore? Who else would we want from the Habs?

All I can say is that if the Habs are willing to offer something stupid, JR is just the man to take advantage of it.

I hope we turn them down. We really need that top 3 pick to get some strong, new blood in the system.
And, personally, there's no one on the Habs roster I'd want to see playing here. Ok, maybe Theodore, but after last season I'd be suspect.

no one? Id like to see Koivu, Zednik, Perreault, Bulis, Markov, or Sundstrum in a canes uni.....highly unlikely but

Theodore here??? That would be interesting..  He had played really well the previous 2 years, but this past season, he definitely struggled..

Don't think Theodore is the answer here. He had a somewhat unimpressive year here, and having him and Weekes would be no better than Weekes and Irbe... nobody would be dominant.
But I'd love to see Zednik or Perrault in the RBC Center sometime.

You can scratch Bulis off your list, moonstomper.
MONTREAL (Ticker) - The Montreal Canadiens on Monday re-signed center Jan Bulis to a two-year contract.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Bulis, 25, set career highs with 16 goals and 24 assists last season and ranked second on the team with a plus-minus of plus-9.
"Jan Bulis was one of our best forwards last season," said Canadiens general manager Andre Savard. "At only 25, he has greatly improved his play, and he also possesses a very good work ethic. Jan is an important part of our young core of players for the upcoming seasons."
A native of the Czech Republic, Bulis played parts of four seasons with the Washington Capitals before being acquired by Montreal in a six-player deal in March 2001.
Bulis has 51 goals and 101 assists in 328 career games.

I think unless he is not going to re-sign Weekes, there wouldn't be any interest in Theodore. DesRochers is already signed so Weekes would have to go.
Perrault would give us yet another great face off man.
I love Koivu just for his spirit and ability to face serious adversity and move through it and forward. I can't imagine the Habs giving him up.
I would cast my vote for using the pick and getting a part of the future going in the system.

Definitely don't want Theodore here...especially after this past season. Both he and Irbe were enigmas in going from being two of the top goaltenders last season to being highly on and off and/or near the bottom. Not to mention how having someone like Theodore would only serve to have another potential goaltending controversy, unless there are plans to deal Weekes since Patty D is signed.
The Habs I wouldn't mind seeing transformed into Canes would be Zednik, Koivu, or Perreault. Koivu would definitely be the most unlikely of the three...then again, I have my doubts about the Montreal/Carolina trade rumor overall since it does come from Fourth Period. But, never hurts to wish...though, I think the Canes would be best off keeping their draft pick too.

If we can get a solid player and a prospect for this draft pick, then take the deal. I don't know who they could give us that would rival the pick of Fleury or a top winger.
Does Montréal have any defensemen that we might have any signifigant interest in?
I do not want Brisebois here.

Captain Slack, I completely agree with you. While I wouldn't go so far as to say they dont have anything we couldn't use, I really don't like the idea of giving up a number two pick. I just think that too many bad things could come out of trading it. Why not take one of the top players, especially if this is such a good draft?

I guess I should have elaborated more. I meant to say, no one we could use that they'd be willing to part with. Personally, I'd love to see Koivu or Zednk here, but it ain't gonna happen. I think we'd be much better off in the long run (and after this year, management needs to focus on the long run) and going with the draft pick.

That's a wise statement. We can't expect everything to be back to "normal" next year; we might have to build up again from the ground up.
Keep fresh, talented players coming through the system, and we'll be loaded.

With our overload of talent in forewards and solid goaltending position, normally I'd agree with you Tommy. But if we can use this draft pick to solidify our position on defense, while at the same time get another draft pick later on in the draft, we would win because of the depth of the draft.
Problem is, I don't think Montréal has a defenseman we want.
But, if there is a Barret Jackman or Jay Bouwmeester in this draft, I'm all for taking him.

well Turby, they have Andrei Markov, a very good young offensvive minded defensmen, 37 points this year, but offensive blue liners dont usually do too well here.
Theres also Craig Rivet, hes a tough stay-at-home backliner who played in all 82 games for the Habs this year, notching 22 points.
They also have two young prospects by the names of Ron Haney and Mike Komisarek who are supposed to be very very good.

Ah yes...Markov.
I feel as though we need another true defenseman...not an offensively minded defenseman ala Sandis Ozolinsh or David Tanabe. They obviously didn't (don't for Tanabe?) fit in well with the system...and we need defensive grit with Wes gone. I'd take Rivet and Montréal's 1st round pick in a heartbeat...but they wouldn't give that up.
Thanks for doing my research for me, Moonstomper. :spin:
