The parade of former 'Canes continues. I didn't have a strong emotional attachment to O, so his presence in the Vault last night was hardly noticeable to me. But... Saturday night is a bit different. I won't like seeing Hilly and Gelinas as Panthers..... but... only a little bit. We wouldn't be the team we are today, without change, right?
I love this team. Here's hoping our boys storm over those pesky cats, and send them home as wittle kitties! We have the talent to play 3 whole periods .. I know we do!!
Puck drops at 7:00PM
LET'S GO 'CANES!!
Just take care of business early... OR wait until the middle of the 2nd to wake up and play.. it's worked so far... :D
Will be weird to see Hilly in another jersey.. hope he doesn't score on us..
Let's Go Canes! :spin:

I did have a strong emotional attachement to O but I hardly cared last night! It was weird. Now, if we had a 2-9-1 record I might feel differently, I admit!
It'll be nice to have Hill and Gelinas back......hope neither one even touches the puck.
Well, this is a division game. In the past we've had problems with those. I can't imagine that would bleed over but who knows. We definitely have to lose sometime......right?
I doubt this one will be high scoring, at least based on the Panthers' play so far.

1. Gelinas, Hill, and Roberts back to face the Hurricanes. I loved all three of these players. Gelinas is my favorite Cane of all-time so... I wish him a goal, an assist, and a loss. I was really pulling for him in the Cup finals the last go-round, and I'm sad to see him back in the Southeast division and not in a Hurricanes uniform.
2. Division game. We will take the 2 points and give them nothing. "No point for you", Florida. Come back next week.
3. Eric Staal will get a hat trick, it will stay a hat trick, and the fans will celebrate it, and it will still stay a hat trick. That will be tough with Luongo in net, but we can always hope.

Excited to see Luongo play ... he's one of the best, IMO. I think he actually gets better with the more shots he faces, so let's hope we can strike early. Also, it'll be good to see Nos. 2 and 3 overall faceoff ... Nathan Horton is off to a great start, tho not Staal-like. It'll be fun ... go get 'em boys!

Will be there. Still trying to get my custom Gelinas Stanley Cup Mcfarlane autographed. How often do the opposing teams sign after the games? I know the Isles did during the last game of the last season, but was not sure if teams usually do that.

So this game isn't televised, and only 1 home game for the rest of the month is televised. I'm planning on going Saturday, but will all of these games get blacked out on Center Ice? I could swear I saw some non-televised-by-the-Canes home games through Center Ice in seasons past. Does that make sense?! :D I just may have to give myself a few early Christmas presents this month!

CI blackout rules seem more stringent to me this year so far... but, this is the first year we've had Dish... so, I dunno. we seem to have more problems than DTVers.
I did pay an extra $6/mo recently to get all the regional sports networks though (when I realized we didn't have NESN for the B's game).. so I'm hoping some extra games can be found there.
to not be televising home games this season is just appalling to me though. I can't understand it.

I was able to watch the Bruins feed last week (Center Ice on Dish Network), but different stuff may apply to me since I'm a little bit of a distance away from Raleigh... ;)
I few years back a bunch of us from LGC went to Blinco's to watch the Canes play the Kings since there was no FSN South Broadcast. Don't remember if that was center ice or not.

I dunno, I guess I'm weird man... I like it down there better. (This is where I probably get made fun of for getting spoiled by the folks with lower level season tickets that we split with another family for 3 years. lol. That probably explains a lot.) I like being almost in the corner, but not quite, so that I don't have to worry about the netting, but I can see goals really well. And about 1/2 way up the section.
Although I was in section 302 for the Flyers game, and I do admit it was awesome...

According to the on screen program guide on my DishNet system at work the game on CI (FLA feed)won't be blacked out. I live down on the coast so that may be the reason. Of course it could always change between now and the game. We did get a notice here at work (I sell DishNet and DTV) from DTV that OLN was being dropped from DishNet.

I think the problem is a spat between Time Warner and FSN.
FSN has contractual rights to Canes games and got pissed when TW wanted to move Canes games from FSN to (believe it or not: the News 14 Carolina channel). FSN bucked and denied TW from broadcasting extra games not broadcast by FSN this season. A deal is supposedly in the works.

So, I guess one of the things we'll find out today is can our new offense solve Luongo. Luckily, it hasn't seemed to me like he's been quite the wall this year as he has in previous years. He's still one of the best, though.
I hope the refs keep better control of the clutching and grabbing and riding on your back tonight than they did Thursday night.

I swung by the pregams skates - Florida closed theirs. BUT, the FOMs (Friends of Marty) were out in full force. Marty had a gaggle full of friends/neighbors that were on the list to watch the Panthers practice. Marty stuck his head out while the Canes were skating and panned the specator side for a bit - but they arrived a bit later and happened to plop down behind us.
A very nice sounding lady was lamenting the fact that Marty didn't end up back here because of how the team has changed and how he'd fit in.
Nice list of former Panthers on our squad as well as the other way around?
And at the risk of being Capt. obvious - Luongo is one huge kid - even w/o pads!
(And thanks to hyena for hooking me up with a replacement Staal av!!)

If watching Florida is anything like watching the old Canes - thank God they're gone!
The Canes are spoiling us! :D
Oh - and major props to Marty Gerber. Probably an odd game - hardly any shots in the first (3) and then a flurry in the 2nd - lots of him hopping up in the air to block the shots - exciting and nerve wracking. Good for him!

Seven in a row! woooo! The state of florida was whooped by north carolina tonight! First by state and then the canes! I must say that after 2 periods of boring hockey, it turned out to be a great game. Our first period did improve, but we definitely lost the momentum in the 2nd. As for brind'amour and wallin, it was great to see them get goals and it was great to see eric staal's point streak continune! Gerber definitely deserved the shutout, he was awesome... :spin: As for the jumbotron, it was still awful...

The first two periods reminded me of the 'old' Canes... glad to see Staal send a beauty of a pass to Brindy for a goal, and obviously for Nic as well...
I thought the crowd was sparser than usual tonight, and add the fact that we really didn't have that much to cheer for for a while, it seemed pretty weak... But we've won 7 in a row...
Guys... WE'VE WON SEVEN GAMES IN A ROW. Just say that to yourself and pretty soon it doesn't even seem real. wow...

The refes were pretty horriale no diving calls, but they were letting Cole get mugged, and I really really dislike Oli Jokken (SP?) he ebowled Ward right in the mouth and there was no call, I can't see how the refs missed his Big windup with his elbow before he even hit ward...argh...
Nice to see Wallin get a goal his truly the secret weapon with that shot if his, and of course a great pass from Staal.

that was a really slow, really boring game with a few minutes of excitement at the end. I was afraid they were going to let the shutout get away in the last 15 seconds, but they held on. a win is a win, but that was boring hockey IMO.
it is very nice to leave the arena looking forward to the next home game so much. I recall a lot of nights when there was much mumbling after a game dreading how soon the next game was in 03-04! I'll take these games, including the boring ones, and be happy

Yep, totally boring. I agree, if that's like the old Canes or the old NHL, good riddance!
I'm glad to see we can win even a game we sleepwalk through most of and a game where our best players are pretty crappy. Staal has a crappy game and still manages to continue his point streak....helluva good sign!
Gerber was awesome, Aaron Ward was awesome, Vasicek and Williams actually had pretty good nights as well.
Also, does this mean we can consider the Christian Huselius curse ended? Have we ever played them and kept him from scoring before?
Glad no former Canes got on the board, either.
The officiating was AWFUL again. I no longer have a shred of respect for Kerry Fraser. I guess I used to like his "let them play" mentality but now that we have players who can skate I hate him. I guess we have him and refs like him to thank for the sludge these guys have been skating through for the past decade. He hates diving but he sure does LOVE obstruction.
I know, we want a full building. I know we need new fans. But some of the crowd (mostly in the parking lot) made we long for the days when it was only us die-hards. I just hate the roving bands of drunken, red-neck, loud mouth, bandwagoners. We had a group in front of us while we were waiting to leave the lot who were just aching to start a fight with someone. I can't freaking stand that crap.
Also, how Mickey Mouse are we that we can't even get an Aftermath on a Saturday night, for pete's sake. WTF? It's not on TV AND there's no Aftermath. I hate that.

A 7-game streak... not just for the team-- but THE STREAK CONTINUES FOR MY LUCKY UNDIES!!! Woooooo! Woo! Woo! :nanner:
And a friend at our tailgate said she wanted Nicky to score, and then a bit later we talked about Brindy being due. So now we've decided that we just need to be sure to talk about specific players during the tailgate, so they'll get good karma!
Oh... and did any watch WRAL news? They started off the hour with Forslund on camera, and talked about our winning streak, and if I heard right, our attendance leads the league as far as improvement over the previous season-- so far our attendance has increased 21% over the 2003-04 season. It was nice to see we were the top story! :D

Aaron Ward was awesome
Hub & I were seated across from Aaron, his wife & child and a friend @ the Chili's in Apex this afternoon , I guess our wishing a good game for him worked! ;)
After seeing a few of the Panther games on CI, I was kinda expecting this type of a game- plodding and defensive and not terribly exiting- and great for our guys to stick with it. Just finished watching TiVo of the Florida feed, they interviewed Cullen & Hill, and both Dave Strader & Denis Potvin, the team announcers were very complimentary of the Canes, Lavi, their system -Canes defense, and lots of raving about Staal. ;)
It was ugly, but I'll take it..... like coach said post game, we are finding several different ways to win. I'm just glad guys didn't abandon ship and kept working even when Luongo was making saves. I'll have to say, Big Joe looked a bit better- and Justin Williams can't buy a little break. I agree with SHC, Matt Cullen looked a bit off, but I like that he's still working hard.....

Boring game, and the Canes still haven't gotten the note about shooting off-center at Luongo. Still, a win's a win, and Staal stays at two points per game even when he's invisible for almost the entire match :D. Gerber took two shots off the mask and was checking it during a break...that cracked me up. Joe was working very hard and had some great shifts and got a point. Hopefully he's getting back on track.
I was pleased with the attendance tonight. The lower level looked a little sparse in places, yes, but I'd say the upper deck was at 85-90% of capacity.
BTW, Cam was wearing new pads tonight, but I didn't see warmup so I couldn't see what was on them. They have one silver swoosh on top and all-red two-piece outside rolls, but what were the little symbols/icons on his shins? Anyone have a pic?

I guess I'm in the minority, I really enjoyed the game tonight. We had 13 shots in the first to their 3, I thought we dominated pretty well at the beginning. Luongo was just, Luongo. We also had a couple or three breakaways all stopped by Luongo. I watched on the DVR one amazing save he made on Cole where he was faked out completely, but then recovered and dove to just barely get his stick on the puck before it crossed the goal line. Creating all that traffic in front of the net is what finally got to him. Props to Williams and Vasicek for doing the dirty work which rarely gets you any credit, but is vital toward getting the W's. The Panthers can make a team look sloppy because they clog up the neutral zone pretty well. They have only allowed 41 goals for the season, (counting tonight), which is about 5th in the East. They aren't an easy team to get a bunch of goals against. Anyway, all's well that ends well.
I can't believe we are undefeated at home!! :D :D :D
The game was a little slow and boring at times.. but Luongo and Gerber had great games and stood on their heads to keep the puck out.. a couple of times I thought they would score but Gerbs didn't disappoint... I love this winning thing!! :spin:

Interesting, N&O said it was a leg. I didn't realize it was Marty's first time back!
TAILWINDS: Glen Wesley left the game in the third period with a leg injury. He's day-to-day. ... Hill left as a free agent in July 2004; Gelinas in July 2002 -- his last game at the RBC Center was Game 4 of the 2002 Stanley Cup finals. G33 - the things on Cam's shins are the flapping flag logo (like on the sweater shoulders). Noticed them at the morning skate.
I didn't think the 1st was boring, we played great - came out and dictated it, but Luongo was Luongo. Fla's not gonna a run-n-gun with us, so that prevented all those exciting end to end rushes. I think we're all just spoiled from the "high scoring Canes" --
I was really happy to see how well Gerber stood up to the switch in momentum in the 2nd and the flurry of shots - even though I hated to see Fla pick it up.
SouthernHockeyChick
11-06-2005, 09:22 AM
The reason I say we played crappy is because we allowed Florida to dictate the style of game we played. If we let those clogging up the neutral zone, hard-hitting teams make us play that kind of game, I'd *think* we'd eventually start to lose those games. We don't have that team anymore. That's no longer our game. But, I agree, it was good Florida defense making us look bad more than anything else.
But I do think it was boring (compared to what we've been seeing). I am spoiled by the way we've been playing....but the way we have been playing is the way we're SUPPOSED to all be playing. We were supposed to have seen the end of the neutral zone trap ane the obstruction. If they don't smack Fraser around, we never will. I hope to God he doesn't call many of our games this year. If he does, these players that have emerged as great for us this year, Whitney, Cullen, to an extent Staal and Cole, won't be great very long. The new rules have a lot to do with our success, IMO.
I'm so annoyed that it's only our first 2 games in November and we're already seeing the "new rules" go out the window. I hope these 2 were an aberration.
Gelinas in July 2002 -- his last game at the RBC Center was Game 4 of the 2002 Stanley Cup finals. They were two of seven players Saturday who have played for both teams. ...
If my memory is correct Marty was back with Calgary once since then.. I remember watching him on the ice hoping that he wouldn't score.. even though you gotta love him if he does.. :)

Calgary hasn't played @ the Canes in quite some time - although you certainly could be right... I'm just trying to remember them playing the Flames in Raleigh and it's not coming to me... and it would have to have been in the past 2 seasons...

Nono, you might have him confused with Malik (who came back here with the Canucks three weeks after he got traded to them). Marty went to Calgary and stayed there until he signed with Florida this summer--and I remember that because a lot of people were pissed off at the NHL schedulebots because twice we got robbed of a chance to show Marty that he's still loved down here. FSN Florida interviewed his former neighbors in the stands during the broadcast. It wasn't very riveting or anything, but it was cute and the families had Welcome Back signs and everything. Same folks I saw at the morning skate.
FSN did a nice job with the broadcast. As SoCal mentioned, they interviewed Marty pregame who said how much he loved it here, then Cullen at the 1st intermission, then Hill at the 2nd intermission - who said how much he loved it here and how the Canes had "great fans.....just like in Florida". Cute. Plus the Marty fans. They called Raleigh Marty's "home away from home" and "still very much beloved" or something.
I think they all want to move here - it was that nice.
Oh - and can I say that Florida's uniforms are the ugliest in the league I think - always have really. And the lettering color/trim suck for readability. I sit in row A in the upper level and unless I knew the player by sight or number, I could not read the freakin' name on the back. I think that should be a requirement. Guess I need to bring the lineup thingy with me that Karen Prince sends out.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Hockey games that are scoreless in the third period always seem to go to the team with more confidence. Saturday night, that team was the Carolina Hurricanes.
Carolina, the NHL's hottest team:lol:, ran its winning streak to a franchise-record-tying seven games and its overall mark to 10-2-1 Saturday night, getting a pair of goals 3:05 apart late in the third period to post a 2-0 victory and send the struggling Panthers to their fifth straight loss.
"You can tell right now they're cranking on all cylinders," said defenseman Sean Hill, who spent most of the past three seasons in Carolina. "I don't think we've played a team that confident with the puck."
Goaltender Roberto Luongo, who had looked almost ordinary in giving up 13 goals in his previous three games, returned to his solid self, stopping breakaways by ex-Panther Ray Whitney in the first period and Erik Cole in the second.
But the 'Canes got their sixth power play of the game on a tripping call on Nathan Horton midway through the final period and cashed in when Rod Brind'Amour's shot from the right face-off circle caromed in off the leg of defenseman Joel Kwiatkowski.
Kwiatkowski was battling Justin Williams in front, and Luongo said he never saw the puck.
"It was kind of a broken-up play," Kwiatkowski said, "but I don't like the idea of guys getting right on top of 'Louie.' Goalies are restricted as it is, where they go and where they can't. There definitely shouldn't be players in the crease, that's for sure."
Niclas Wallin scored Carolina's second goal with 5:25 remaining in the third period.
The Panthers had fallen into two-goal deficits in the first period in their previous two games, and only some solid work by Luongo kept that trend from continuing as Carolina outshot Florida 13-3 over the first 20 minutes. The Panthers had a 24-16 advantage the rest of the way, but couldn't get a puck past goaltender Martin Gerber.
Florida was 0-for-4 on the power play and is now 2-for-23 in its past four games.
"The specialty teams were the difference," Martin said. "They got a power-play goal, and we didn't generate anything on our power play."
"They outworked us on the penalty kill," Jokinen said. "They had four guys, but a lot of times it seemed we were a man short."
"The coaches are giving us all the tools. We're watching videos... We should know what they do in the (penalty kill). Every team is doing the same thing."
The Panthers don't play again until Wednesday and will undoubtedly address their power-play woes. They could start by looking at tape of the Hurricanes, who rank third overall.
"You watch their power play and they move it around very well," Hill said. "They spread us out pretty good and get chances. We're not quite getting control of the puck enough to make tape-to-tape passes." The Panthers had no shots on two of their four power plays.
Florida (6-7-2), shut out for the second time this season, also continues to struggle to score. Only seven Panthers have scored more than one goal, and six — including Niklas Hagman and Jozef Stumpel — have none.
"We've got to put more pucks to the net," Martin said. "Hagman had almost a breakaway in the first (period), the puck on his forehand and a great angle to shoot, and he pulls up and makes a pass. You don't shoot, you don't score."
Saddled with a losing record for the first time this season, the Panthers ended their six-game road trip 1-3-2.
"It's always nice to go back home, but playing on the road is always a big part of being a good team," Stephen Weiss said. "This was a big trip for us. We didn't exactly get the results we wanted, but we are going home for a while and have to make up some ground."

Very odd to see/hear/read that!

Freaky huh?
Oh and 2 non-game comments. The fans in the parking lot got a big kick out of the Pig making his rounds on his tricked out ATV. It was pretty hilarious to see actually. I saw him playing football and then posing for a photo with about 6 grown men. He was a bit cautious around someone's grill until he was assured it was shrimp and beef!
Also - I thought the pregame "Chase McCoy" feature on the Jumbotron was a hoot! Well done Canesvision. For those that missed it, it appears they will get that one on the website - they have the CSI:Raleigh from Thursday, which I missed (and was amusing). But the "Chase McCoy" feature was great because of the team/staff participation.

We in the Ladies Thread have known for years we had the NHL's hottest team.
Sorry guys, but I couldn't let that one go!! ;)
Don't know why but I could swear Marty had been back... oh well..
I know Hilly was loving the crowd (secretly) and wishing he was back with us... I know he really didn't want to leave us.. wish we could have given him exactly what he wanted at the time..

i think that clip was the best one they've ever done. not only was it clever but the fact it involved actual Canes was great. nice production value too...i think that Canesvision is getting better and better at stuff like this.
i just wish they would put the "ask the canes" and "trippin' with tripp" segments online as well.
Chase McCoy was a hoot.. I am glad they got the players to play along.. that made it even better ...and when Lavi said he was suspicious that Chase couldn't skate, that cracked me up. I still love the opposing players in the penalty box...

Getting back to the whole blackout thing... I went to the game but recorded it on the Center Ice channel, just in case it wasn't blacked out. I got home to find it did record (on DirecTV), but a friend said her Dish Center Ice feed was blacked out!? What gives? We're both in Raleigh, and technically I'm a few miles closer to the RBC.
Also, noticed an interesting stat on the Yahoo hockey standings page... the Canes have the best record for the last 10 games (9-0-1). :spin:

It was Not blacked out on Dish. I watched it on Center Ice.
The FL Fox channel (FOXFL I think) was blacked out for me, but the CI feed (also from Fox in FL, go figure) was being shown.
what I've learned is that you have to check every single broadcast, usually one will be showing. /shrug
