So far, the Boston/San Jose trade seems be working out in Boston's favor. They're up 2-0 on Ottawa. The first goal was by Marco Sturm with Strum & Brad Stuart setting up Bergeron for the second. If this keeps up, Bruins fans might not miss Thornton after all!

This game was being shown on HDNet, but all of a sudden we lost the broadcast. Their announcers are decent and the HD is great but they do have a lot of "freezing" of the images.
Ahh, never mind it finally came back.

Figures... the first game I actually put money on, seriously, because I thought Boston would be discombobulated, and they're up 2-0 on the freakin Senators. ugh.
edit: 3-0. damn.

Holy crap, anyone been watching the Kings/Sens game? Looks like it's been NASTY.
Chara fought Gleason (which is who tore up Shanny the other night). And Chara got an instigator penalty on that one and got ejected! That one is in the last five minutes, too. Wonder if Murray will get fined?
I see penalties for Sean Avery and McGratton at the same time that resulted in game misconducts but no fight. Think Avery turtled?

A total of 95 minutes in penalties were doled out in the third period, including 65 against Ottawa.
Brian McGrattan was eager to go with Avery, however, and the Ottawa enforcer caught up with him moments later at 8:18. Avery got a game misconduct, along with roughing and unsportsmanlinke conduct penalties. McGrattan got cross-checking and roughing minors and a 10-minute misconduct.
But no fighting penalty. Hmmm.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Chara isn't a "goon" or "fighter" usually so using that same litmus test there shouldn't be a suspension or fine for the coach, just a fine for the player like in Shane Doan's case. If something different is done then we've got ourselves an Animal Farm situation. "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."

Chara to be suspended for instigating
TSN.ca Staff
12/3/2005 10:11:44 AM
Zdeno Chara's fight on Friday with Tim Gleason of the Los Angeles Kings will cost the Senators' defenceman a suspension and his coach Bryan Murray a fine.
Chara was given an instigating penalty for the fight, which took place with less than four minutes remaining. A new rule added in the off-season says a player who gets an instigating penalty in the final five minutes will get a one-game suspension and the coach of that player will get a $10,000 fine.
The NHL has the freedom to go back and review the situation - like they did with Shane Doan and Wayne Gretzky last week - but Chara and Murray's case is considered by the league to be a textbook example of why the rule was put in place.
Huh? So, I guess Chara is a goon? WTF?
I wanna be Old Major! Or maybe Moses....at least he never has to work.

Heres the Chara vs. Gleason incident:
http://rapidshare.de/files/8559358/051202_gleason_chara.wmv.html
At first it doesnt look like that much different than how 2 heavyweights would get started. 2 things though, Chara lined up as a right winger in the standard faceoff setup with 2 defenders back and 3 forwards up, also what we don't get to see *I THINK* is Chara starts wailing on Gleason while the camera follows the play down the ice.
However after watching this I still don't think its any different than what Doan did.

SHC, I'm now convinced people are basically the same most everywhere. Last night they 'Yotes played a great game that had everything from their team, goals, physical play, good goaltending, 2 players with the potential of a hat trick, 1 that got one, and a ton left early.
And they also screamed like banchees over free Tshirts, lol. Thankfully they only did it at 1 point in the third. Funny thing was, they shot (or dropped them) from above the lower level because everyone got up and turned around and seemed to be looking for them. I never did see any shirts or where they came from, lol. But they screamed on queue.

Here's a mildly humurous recap of the Kings/Sens debacle on Saturday night, one of a series of funny articles that have the same theme "Sean Avery". :eek2: I'm not certain about many things related to the Canes and who'll play, or whatever, and not to jump over the Ducks or anything- but I'm pretty sure Boulerice will be dressed for the game on Thursday in Hell-ay......
Anger Doesn't Manage Anything for the Kings
Avery is out, coaches trade barbs and TV commentator is chased after Ottawa wins, 5-1.By Chris Foster
Times Staff Writer
December 3, 2005
KANATA, Ontario — The pile of bodies behind the net at game's end Friday might as well have carried a sign: Sean Avery was here.
Although a game misconduct and unsportsmanlike penalty with 8:18 left meant that Avery was not around to see the final minutes of the Kings' 5-1 loss to Ottawa — he was on the bus outside the Corel Center when the game ended — he was again at the center of chaos.
This might have been a teaser for tonight's visit to Montreal, where Avery's September comment about French Canadian players has not been forgotten.
But the Kings' third consecutive loss, and fourth in five games, was also a painful lesson in why the Senators have a league-leading 40 points. Dany Heatley scored twice and Dominik Hasek looked every bit the Vezina Trophy winner that he has been six times.
All that was tabled for discussion when the coaches, the Kings' Andy Murray and Ottawa's Bryan Murray, ended the evening talking more about each other than the game, primarily focusing on the two fights that Ottawa players started as payback for Hasek's being hit during the game, mostly after a King player was pushed into him.
The game slid into hockey's version of wild west "justice" after the Kings' Craig Conroy was pushed from behind by Ottawa's Chris Kelly and hit Hasek in the head with his skate with eight minutes left. Then the last five minutes devolved into 48 minutes of penalties.
"That's what Andy does, they run the goaltender," said Bryan Murray, the former Mighty Duck coach and general manager. "Pretty much every time we played them in Anaheim, it ended up like this."
Another Murray, another view.
"We both have reputations," Andy Murray said. "We know sends players out like that because he has a reputation as a tough coach.
"So, he's sitting up there on his lofty perch, saying all this stuff about me. The problem is, if you're up there, you can't have it both ways. You don't preach one thing and then go out and do something else."
[b]The he-said, he-said spat spilled outside the locker rooms, when Bryan Murray chased down and screamed at Jim Fox, a Kings' television commentator, because of on-air remarks by Fox that Murray was "unprofessional" and had a "reputation" for these kind of incidents.
Kelly escalated the situation, going after Jeff Cowan with 3:29 left. Then, eight seconds after play resumed, the Senators' Zdeno Chara jumped Tim Gleason.
Chara received an instigator penalty, which under NHL rules should result in a one-game suspension and a $10,000 fine for Murray, although the NHL didn't apply the late-game instigator rule recently when it involved Phoenix Coach Wayne Gretzky.
Avery, though, was blamed by Bryan Murray for starting the trouble.
"He's never been much of a factor other than what he does," Bryan Murray said. "He speared Hasek in the crease. He talks to players [on the ice] all the time. He's the leader of the band there."

Everybody hates Sean
He's irked francophones, been hunted down by angry opponents and told to shut up by his team
L.A. Kings superpest Sean Avery also happens to be a pretty good hockey player
Dec. 6, 2005. 01:00 AM
MARK ZWOLINSKI
SPORTS REPORTER
For Sean Avery, talk is no longer cheap.
The Los Angeles Kings forward has not spoken to the media in the past four days. His media victims are piling up like empties at a Christmas party, including over a dozen locals yesterday who got the brushoff from the NHL's most famous mouth of 2005.
According to Kings coach Andy Murray, the club has had a little talk with the bombastic superpest.
It had a lot to do with the fines, francophone player-bashing, alleged racial slurs, NHLPA bashing, and other verbal hellfire that has made for great headlines over the past two months.
"We've talked to him about that," Murray said after Kings practice yesterday.
"We want to make sure his actions do the talking for him."
Avery has likely set a record of sorts for him — the longest period without a zinger quote.
Love him or hate him, and there are plenty of players around the NHL in the latter group, he enters tonight's contest against the Leafs as one of the most talked-about players in the league.
"You have to give `Aves' credit, he's tough, he goes out and backs it up, he fights. ... He can't fight everyone and everyone wants to fight him," Kings forward Craig Conroy said.
Avery discovered how much ire he raises in peers after he allegedly called Edmonton's George Laraque, who is black, a monkey.
After the game, the entire Oilers roster went on an Avery hunt, scrambling through the lower hallways at the Rexall Centre to get at him.
According to those who witnessed it, the Oilers were beyond words; they wanted a group beating.
Such response is typical for Avery these days. He played in Montreal Saturday, his first appearance in Quebec since his anti-French player comments in October, and faced deafening jeers from the fans. One fan even threw a teddy bear wrapped in a Quebec flag at him as he sat on the bench.
The Kings, while unofficially putting a muzzle on their talented winger, also went to the lengths of bringing an NHL security representative and their top media handler on this four-game road trip that wraps up against the Leafs tonight.
"They (Kings public relations staff) don't let him watch TV and they don't want him to read the papers," a source close to the team said.
Why can't Avery just shut himself up?
In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, he said, only half seriously, that he may have been dropped on his head as a baby.
"There's some wires crossed up there," he said.
Some observers say the career agitator felt a little left out when megastar Jeremy Roenick arrived from Philadelphia this season.
Avery reportedly sat in the locker room, almost invisible to a west coast media looking for hockey stories in the post-lockout NHL.
No one talked to him. A week into the season, a TSN camera crew finally set up in front of him. OMG is that for real???
The next thing anyone knew, Avery was stereotyping Francophone players in his response to what he felt was a dirty hit on Roenick by Phoenix Coyotes defenceman Denis Gauthier.
Kings coach Andy Murray wants to nip the snowballing media reaction to Avery.
"The thing that gets lost in this whole equation is that Sean Avery is a good hockey player," Murray said.
Avery has four goals, six assists, and a team-leading 59 penalty minutes in 19 games so far this season.
"What we want people to understand is that the act is behind him. Now, the league will have to look at him in a different way, he's changed, he's not running goalies, it's not the way it's being portrayed."
While Avery was — and is — getting under the skin of opponents, no one was complaining about his celebrity.
A distraction? Kings players beg to differ.
"It's a distraction at times, yes, but it's a good distraction," Conroy said.
Conroy and his teammates learned yesterday that back in Los Angeles, there are photos of the infamous paparazzi — the photo legions that usually hound movie stars — aiming their cameras at Avery.
"The paparazzi ... oh no, Sean's head is going to get too big after this, we'll never hear the end of it," Conroy said, laughing.

I think Conroy must have stuck scissors in a light socket when he was 2 or something, if he's saying that.
Avery? Fight? Maybe if I'm the King of Siam!

He's that really bratty kid from second grade that you found out when you grew up just wasn't getting enough attention at home. Only he's not in second grade anymore.
I would agree that Avery is the kind of player you like but would hate to have on your team. Only, I wouldn't really say I like him. I'd say I like to see how big of an a** he's going to make of himself next. I tend to, as much as I pretend I don't sometimes, really like a mouthy player. Man, most exciting PP I may have ever seen in TO just now. LA got a 4 minue minor and the Leafs kept it in the zone for the first 2.5 minutes and Conroy didn't have a stick for the majority of that time. Garon made some awesome saves.
Unfortunately, to clear it Conroy dove on it and threw it out so they went down 5 on 3 for a full minute and a half and TO scored.

Man, it just cracks me up that the Leafs are the darling of the hockey world. I've only watching this game during the intermissions of Flames/Flyers but it seems to me to have been a perfect example of what I see from the Leafs all the time. The LA players were clearly more skilled, clearly better skaters than the Leafs but the Leafs just thugged it up enough to nearly make up for the difference. And until this last 5 minutes, the refs seemed to be letting them get away with most of it, too. Several times when I was watching I'd see TO commit a couple penalties in a row and then LA would commit one and that's the one they'd call.
2-1 LA, final score. Glad they broke that losing streak over the head of TO and not us.

SPORTS EXTRA/KING REPORT
Avery Appears to Enjoy the AttentionBy Chris Foster
Times Staff Writer
December 7, 2005
TORONTO — Sean Avery couldn't seem to resist the glare of the spotlight one more day, ending three days of "no comment" by holding court after the Kings' morning skate Tuesday.
Of course, this came a day after Avery made a harsh non-verbal comment to a Toronto paparazzi. Avery was walking with actress Elisha Cuthbert this weekend and made an obscene gesture to the photographer. The photo ran in the Toronto Star on Tuesday.Avery later claimed he made the gesture thinking that it would prevent the photograph from being published.
But Avery, who had not spoken to the media since Friday morning before the Ottawa game, seemed to bask in the Toronto glow Tuesday. He was born in Pickering, Ontario, near Toronto, and his father, mother and brother attended the Kings' game against the Maple Leafs on Tuesday.
As to his recent adventure in Montreal, where he was verbally assaulted for comments he made in September about French Canadian players, Avery tried to make it all seem like a misunderstanding.
"I think some things I said got misconstrued," Avery said. "I keep reviewing them, but it is all clogging up my brain right now so I can't think."
When asked whether he heard that Kings' Coach Andy Murray had said that he was a great hockey player, Avery smiled and said, "I saw that on TV. I gave him a big hug [Tuesday]. It was our first moment in three years. It was nice."
If nothing else, Avery has picked up one admirer, teammate Jeremy Roenick, hardly a media wallflower in his own right.
"I'm enjoying watching him go, to tell you the truth," Roenick said. "He's gone places I would never, ever dare to go. He's really brash.
"I'm kind of being the buffer, when he needs someone to step in and kind of be the mediator, then I'll kind of step in and try to help him out."
Avery has watched Roenick with similar admiration.
"He's the most amazing human I've ever met," Avery said. "And for me to be astonished by a person is saying something. He does it on a daily basis."
The value of Roenick and Avery has not been lost on other Kings' players.
"We've kind of been lucky to have J.R. and Avery around the last little while because the attention has been on what they say and not how we've played," Kings' center Craig Conroy said.
The Kings have lost five of their last six games.
Toronto center and former King Jason Allison claimed that he didn't realize that the Maple Leafs were playing the Kings until Tuesday morning. While that seemed difficult to believe, Allison said Tuesday morning, "I'm really going to enjoy playing against guys I was buddies with."
Allison said the lockout gave him another year to recover from a concussion that forced him to miss all but 26 games with the Kings the last two NHL seasons.
"The last eight to 10 games I have started to feel like myself again," he said.
The lifestyle change is a radical one for Allison, who signed with Toronto in the summer. He lived in Manhattan Beach while he was with the Kings and now resides on a farm 40 miles from Toronto. The intense Toronto media scrutiny has also been a big change as well.
"You have 10 guys saying 10 different things about you," Allison said.

Here is an odd, but touching story. I posted it here, for lack of anywhere else seeming fitting.
Lilian Hosking has seen a lot in her lifetime, but the Edmonton woman had just one wish for her 101st birthday:Run her hands through the hair of Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Smyth.According to a report in The Edmonton Sun, the woman got her wish at the Meadowcroft Senior's Residence on Monday, just one day after turning 101."It was my wish to see Smitty," Hosking told the newspaper. "I can't believe he's here. I love to watch him skate up and down the ice and bang in goals. And I love his hair. I hope he never cuts it."Smyth surprised Hosking at the seniors' home with a cake, an autographed No. 101 Oilers jersey and two puck-shaped brownies. The newspaper said Hosking hugged Smyth and ran her hand through his hair. The Oilers star began to blush. Now I'll have to bring back the Stanley Cup for you, too," Smyth told Hosking."The young fans are important because they're our future," Smyth told The Sun. "But seniors are the ones who paved the way for us to live the lives we do."Said Hosking: "I never expected this. It's really too much. It's been the best birthday of my life."

Funny article about Johnson and Crosby.
WHAT HIS FRIEND SAYS: U-M's Johnson: Sid's the ultimate competitor
December 7, 2005
BY GEORGE SIPPLE
To Michigan freshman defenseman Jack Johnson, Crosby is just Sid, his friend and former teammate.
Crosby and Johnson met in the 10th grade, when both played for Shattuck-St. Mary's, a powerhouse high school hockey team in Minnesota.
When Crosby plays against the Red Wings on Monday night, Johnson will be watching from the stands.
Johnson plans to get together with Crosby for the Penguins' morning skate. Then Johnson will head back to Ann Arbor for U-M's practice before returning to Joe Louis Arena for the game.
The two usually talk once a week. "A little bit about hockey," Johnson said. "Just normal conversations, really."
Johnson said Crosby hasn't let all the hype affect him.
"In a way, he hasn't changed at all, which is the nice thing," Johnson said. "He's still the same kid playing high school hockey as he is now playing in the NHL."
What separates Crosby from all of the others Johnson has played with and against? Crosby wants to win all the time, at whatever he does, Johnson said.
"He and I would play a pickup game of tennis and turn it into a war," Johnson said.
Even frisbee became a competition. Frisbee?
They would compete to see who would drop the pass first, Johnson said.
No site is off-limits for a competition. The friends roomed together in Ottawa for this year's NHL draft, where Crosby was selected first overall by the Penguins and Johnson was selected third overall by the Carolina Hurricanes.
"I spent the previous week up in Nova Scotia with him playing hockey, so I had to bring my hockey gear to the hotel," Johnson said. "I went to air it out and he had all his shoes on my side, and he had like 10 pairs of shoes.
"He said, 'You can't air that out, the room will stink.' I said, 'Well, move your shoes.' Things started to escalate, so I moved my hockey gear into the closet with the suit he was going to wear to the draft -- just to make him mad. He shoved me out of the way and things escalated. Turned into a pretty big wrestling match."
Johnson is listed at 6-feet-1, 210 pounds, Crosby at 5-11, 193. So who won?
"It was pretty much a draw," Johnson said. "But our room was pretty much destroyed after that."

So, I admit I avoided a lot of the stories on Crosby around draft-time just because I was already on Sid the Kid overload. What's the story on how they ended up playing high school hockey together in the US? Meaning, why was Crosby here?

Someone more versed in 'all things Crosby' probably knows, but my guess would be he only went 1 year or something and then went on to the OHL.
Isn't that the fancy schmancy boarding school that has the great hockey program. That kid that Gretzky drafted here went there as well?

Yeah, it's some prep school that is a hockey star breeding ground due to the competitiveness. Supposedly puts out well-rounded kids and is good for keeping their egos in check. Kids from all over try to get in and only the most skilled do. In junior hockey you have to go to high school in addition to playing hockey and practicing, so why not go to one of the best hockey programs with a good prep school to boot. I watched a program about cros that explained the whole lure of the school.

From Bucci's column this week:
Paul Kariya is the biggest diver in the league, and [Darcy] Hordichuk is the worst player in the NHL. He's an embarrassment. He can't even skate, he can't shoot and he can't pass. Just look at the stats.

E- that Article was great on Johnson & Crosby! - I remember that NHL draft show that they showed on OLN showing Crosby telling the story of all of Johnson's hockey gear being strewn all over the room and stinking upthe closet -complete with Crosby showing the piles he made of his stuff, vs the mess on Johnson's side and Crosby complaining- and cracking himself up when Johnson thought Sid did something to his toothbrush (sabatoge? he asked Crosby, after he pulled his toothbrush out of his bag "is this ok" and Crosby was like WTF?) because Crosby was so heated about the gear and he thought he 'did something' to his stuff. It was the first time I saw Crosby as a teenager- not the SuperTeen that he's had to be for the media; he was giggly, laughing, near tears at Johnson's thought that he did something to the toothbrush. LOL.
So, I admit I avoided a lot of the stories on Crosby around draft-time just because I was already on Sid the Kid overload. What's the story on how they ended up playing high school hockey together in the US? Meaning, why was Crosby here?
SHC- Shattuck St. Mary's is the school in Minnesota- Andy Murray (coach of the Kings) was the coach at that school during that time, his kid Brady went there before he graduated and is playing for the North Dakota Fighting Sioux; and Darren Pang is like on the board, has a kid their too, and does coaching clinics in the summer- apparently during that time, the Crosby family wasn't sure if he was going to do the prep school/college route, or if he'd play junior hockey...... thus the enrollment at Shattuck St. Mary's and him meeting his protector, Johnson.

Anyone watch the Wild Pens game tonight? Orpik almost took off Chouinard's head just minutes before the 5 min mark of the third period. I forget who but like a good team player should one of the wild Instigated with Orpik in the last 3 minutes and of course will likely get a fine and a game suspension. Coach Lemaire will likely get fined too. But I don't know how else you keep the game in control.
Chouinard almost gets taken out for the season and possibly career in a game his team has handily won (and embarrassed the pens) and Orpik gets 2 minutes despite the severity of the hit. This instigator rule, and fine and suspension rule has got to go. I predicted it, this rule becomes a bad thing when a team is losing badly and someone starts getting chippy like orpik did when his team was down 5 nothing. The refs called the appropriate penalty. The wild and pens never meet again during the regular season but Orpik needed to get cleaned for threatening the career of another player like that. The Wild should not get fined because if they didn't do this, the next time orpik plays the canes he may think about doing the same thing on Eric Staal.

Wild's Wanvig Suspended- Lemaire Fined
12/9/2005 5:25:29 PM
TORONTO (Ticker) - Minnesota Wild right wing has become the latest player to be suspended for instigating an altercation within the final five minutes of a game.
On Friday, the NHL suspended Wanvig one game without pay and fined coach Jacques Lemaire $10,000 following an incident in Thursday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
With 3:35 left in the Wild's eventual 5-0 triumph, Wanvig instigated a fight with Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik. By rule, a player deemed the instigator of an altercation in the final five minutes of regulation or during overtime will receive an automatic one-game suspension.
Wanvig, who has two goals, five assists and 38 penalty minutes in 23 games this season, will miss Saturday's game against the Philadelphia Flyers and forfeit $2,521.51.
On Saturday, Ottawa Senators defenseman Zdeno Chara was suspended for instigating a fight in the final five minutes of last Friday's win over the Los Angeles Kings and was suspended for Monday's game against the Florida Panthers.

RATS! I missed that! I've been looking forward to this game for over a week ( a non-Center Ice subscriber :( ) and I forgot! Fie! I only made it in for the last period.
*sigh* Go Wings. :|

Looks like the top three picks from 2003 are all living up to their billing now. Staal, of course, has been amazing; Fleury, while getting pelted with rubber, has looked amazing for the Pens; and Nathan Horton got his first career hat trick last night (and if anyone saw the highlights ... wow, they were beauties) and quietly has 14 goals already (in only 22 games).

I saw that Fla/Nsh score last night and was like "whaaaa?". Heard this morning on XM that Voukon's backup pulled something in the warmup and they had to use their AHL backup callup. Tough night. I think they said he still stopped 33 shots or something? Nice job by the NSH D to help him out, lol.
With only one healthy goalie, D Jamie Allison dressed as Finley's backup

Senators use power play to rout Leafs
Canadian Press
12/17/2005 10:18:08 PM
OTTAWA (CP) - After being embarrassed 8-0 the last time they faced the Ottawa Senators, the Toronto Maple Leafs fared only slightly better Saturday.
Toronto's frequent trips to the penalty box and poor penalty killing allowed the Senators to ring up a franchise-record six power-play goals en route to an 8-2 in front of 19,953, the largest-ever crowd at the Corel Centre.
''We started to take penalties and obviously we weren't doing a very good job of killing them, that's why the score was embarrassing as it is,'' Leafs coach Pat Quinn said. ''They're a skilled team and if you take penalties and then miss a lot of plays like we did tonight, then you get the kind of result that we got.''
Dany Heatley, Wade Redden, Jason Spezza, Daniel Alfredsson, Antoine Vermette and Chris Kelly all scored with the man advantage as the Senators finished 6-for-11 on the power play to eclipse the team's previous high of five power-play goals set in 2003.
''The power play's been up and down a bit the whole year, so we got a few more tonight,'' said Redden, who, along with Spezza and Alfredsson, also had a pair of assists.
Mike Fisher broke a 1-1 tie with the teams playing four-aside hockey in the second period and then Senators took over from there, jumping to an eventual 4-1 lead heading into the final frame.
Bryan Smolinski also scored for Ottawa (23-5-2). The win allowed the Senators to break out of a mini-slump in which they had won just one of their four previous contests and improve to 4-0 on the year against Toronto (16-13-3).
Dominik Hasek stopped 27 shots in goal.
''We capitalized big tonight,'' Alfredsson said. ''We skated better than we have in a while. We moved the puck well and we were taking the shots when we had them as well. It was clicking pretty good. We did a lot of good things tonight to make it tough on them.''
While Redden was back in the lineup for the first time after missing the past 10 games with a sprained knee, the Leafs were without the injured Eric Lindros (wrist), Tie Domi (shoulder) and Nik Antropov (knee).
Mariusz Czerkawski, with his first goal as a Leaf since signing as an unrestricted free agent in September, scored on a power play and Bryan McCabe had the other Toronto marker.
The Leafs went 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
Ed Belfour, looking to move past Terry Sawchuk on the NHL's all-time goaltending wins list, failed to do so for the fifth straight start. He made 35 saves, but hasn't won since Nov. 28 and remains stuck at 447 career victories.
Toronto has just one win in its last five outings and two victories in the past seven games.
''It was very frustrating. Too many penalties on our part and things went their way,'' said Belfour, who gave up five goals on 15 shots in the 8-0 defeat at the Air Canada Centre on Oct. 29. ''It seems like they have some really good games against us. I don't think the refs helped us too much tonight.''
Belfour's frustration spilled over late in the game when he took a swing at Spezza following a whistle, sparking a fight between Spezza and Colaiacovo.
Spezza was given an instigator penalty for the fight with 3:36 remaining, which means he'll receive an automatic one-game suspension and Senators coach Bryan Murray will be fined $10,000. It's the second time this month that's happened after Zdeno Chara met the same fate against the Los Angeles Kings on Dec. 2.
Spezza felt he was speared (speared by Belfour? No Way! :roll) during the incident and is hoping the automatic suspension might be reviewed by the league and overturned under the circumstances.
''I was pretty angry,'' he said. ''Nobody takes any liberties on me. I wasn't really thinking about (the suspension).'' that Spezza kid is gutsy...
The Senators also received a blow when rookie right-winger Brandon Bochenski crashed into the boards in the second period and left the game with an injury to his right shoulder and didn't return. His status wasn't immediately known.
Czerkawski, who signed with Toronto for $500,000 U.S., hadn't dressed since Nov. 25 and was playing for just the eighth time this season because of injury and general ineffectiveness.
After finding the back of the net in the NHL for the first time since April 2, 2004, he stood in one spot and tilted his head back, screaming and pumping his fists.
The celebrations didn't last after the Leafs took three straight minor penalties before the first was over, however, and on the final opportunity with the man advantage, Heatley had several whacks at a rebound before finally lifting it over Belfour to tie the game.
In the second, Toronto ran into more penalty trouble and, after Fisher was left alone in front to take a pass from Bryan Smolinski and put the Senators ahead 2-1, eight minutes in, Redden and Spezza each capitalized on power-play opportunities to make it 4-1.
McCabe and Smolinski, from an extreme angle, exchanged goals 37 seconds apart early in the third before Alfredsson and Vermette scored, the first coming with the Leafs two men short and the second before the latter penalty had expired.
Kelly rounded at the scoring with 18 seconds to go.
''I had some mixed feelings. Coming back, I got so excited, then we lose again, eight goals,'' Czerkawski said. ''We thought we played pretty well and it was 1-1, then those power-play goals for them.''
Notes: With Martin Havlat out for at least the remainder of the regular season with a shoulder injury, Ottawa also made healthy scratches of defenceman Christoph Schubert and right-winger Patrick Eaves, both rookies ... The Senators are 13-1-0 versus Northeast Divison opponents ... Tough guys Wade Belak for Toronto and Brian McGrattan for Ottawa both suited up after being made a healthy scratch in their teams' last games ... The Senators are in Montreal on Tuesday ... The Leafs play host to the New York Islanders on Monday night.

This may be here somewhere, but I was just watching ESPN's highlights and "Sid the Kid" is wearing the "A" for the Pens? WTF? A nineteen year old wearing an "A"? When did this happen and what a slap in the face of the proven NHL'ers on the Pens. Just my opinion, but this doesn't say much for those guys. Can you say Winnipenguins?

Well, as Emrick said - the most nervous folks at the ACC are the backup goalies. Leaf and Isles at 4-4 after ONE period. O'Neill got the 4th and tying goal for the Leafs. Looked pretty damn happy and punched the glass.

And I guarantee you the guys on OLN when they do a game update will say that DiPietro sucks... and throw the love on Belfour for "recovering" from losing 5 straight. They were heaping praise on how Belfour "always recovers" from losses like the past few he's had, and basically said his losing streak was his team's fault and not his.

It had been 4-3 Calgary until a couple minutes ago. Now, it's 5-4 Edmonton with 30 seconds to go!!

Nasty scrum at the end. Maybe this 8 games a year within division will get someone killed, eh? ;)

Jovo made a nasty hit on Belanger and, gotta give Avery credit (   ) he went after him, as someone should have. Bascially stood there and got the side of his head hit for a few seconds but I guess he made his point. Jovo has about a foot of reach on him.

Flyers vs Ottawa. Gagne should be back in the lineup. :D
Ottawa is just 4-2-3 in its last nine including a 4-3 shootout loss Tuesday to the Montreal Canadiens.
Spezza left the game in the second period with a pulled chest muscle. He remains questionable for Thursday.
"I don't think it's bad," Spezza said. "Right now it's sore, but we'll have a better idea (Thursday)."

For those of us with that love/hate infatuation with Darcy Tucker ;) this little incident was a doozy, replayed for hours on Sportscenter this morning.....with Tucker mocking Jannsen on his way to the penalty box for the boo-boo he inflicted .......... Leafs' Tucker fined for helmet incident

TORONTO (CP) - Forward Darcy Tucker of the Toronto Maple Leafs was fined $2,500 US but escaped any further punishment from the NHL on Tuesday after the league automatically reviewed his match penalty from the previous night's game.
Tucker took the helmet off Cam Janssen during a wild fight Monday night and hit the New Jersey Devils winger on the head with it _ twice. He was thrown out of the game with his match penalty and NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell reviewed it Tuesday.
"We did not feel it was Tucker's intent to hurt Janssen with the helmet," Campbell said Tuesday. "He was trying to get the helmet off and I don't think he was trying to use it as a weapon."
Tucker said much the same after Monday's game.

I saw a clip of that fight today. I think he's lucky, given some of his questionable choices/heat of the moment decisions. I realize he didn't plan on hitting the guy with the helmet, but he did (though I don't think those were the worst blows at all). It's like high sticks, some are just unlucky, but you get the gate anyway.
I think they play again soon huh?
Watched the end of 2 games tonight and the hapless Caps and Pens ended up on the short end of both. Pens tie the Leafs w/about 8 minutes to go in the 3rd and then have 2+ minutes of 5 on 3, with 3 Leaf D in the box, followed by another chunk of 1 man advantage. They don't score. Game goes to OT and the Leafs win - and half the Mellon arena erupts in cheering.
Caps are winning 3-1 in the 3rd and w/in a few minutes the Bruins tie it up and put the game away in OT.
Ouch.

Prediction: The Isles have a new coach by the time we play them 1/6.
They just totally collapsed in a rough game vs the Sens where they really did have a chance. Stirling was standing on the bench at the end of the game, wouldn't leave, and you could just see, he knew. Kinda like Mo in his last home game, the thought of which still gets me teary-eyed.
I posted in the Olympic thread, but DiPietro got injured and had to be pulled. Smolinski landed on his leg HARD and he had to be damn near carried off the ice.

man, Buffalo sure has been tough lately. well, ok, more than "lately"... it's been over a month.
they're currently up 4-1 on Atlanta with 4 to go. as Atlanta likes to do... since they've got no chance of winning and the game is getting close to the end, there's been a lot of banging.
they're getting the worst of it though. Kozlov just got leveled. :D

Panthers also beat Montreal. Hope they tired 'em out!
Luongo made a crazy glove save on a Kovalev penalty shot to preserve the 2-1 win...check it out if you didn't see it.

I haven't watched many Isles games, but I have a friend whose a big fan and he said that Charles Wang has said that Milbury wouldn't be allowed to fire another coach -- so it'll be intersting to see if that happens or Milbury is out with him.

Wow! That would be the smart thing to do, IMO. Just haven't seen that org do much smart in a while. I figured Milbury had to have some pictures of Wang in some uncomfortable situation or something. ;)
Although, honestly, I don't watch enough Isles to know if Stirling or Milbury is the one to blame in this case. Stirling looked distraught last night. Maybe he's hoping to get canned! They should have been able to hold on to that game. But then, it is Ottawa. They may have been just toying with them in the first. But you just felt that team collapse. The goaltending change didn't help much, though, lol.
BTW, I read this morning that DiPietro wasn't favoring either knee after the game and there's no more info on his injury. Maybe it wasn't serious. It sure looked serious at the time!!
I saw that unsuccessful penalty shot on the boxscore and thought "wow!" I'll have to check out some video.

I had an ankle injury like that where I had to be carried off the ice, but once I got the skates and pads off there was less torque on it and it hurt a lot less, but I still couldn't skate for about a week. I guess this means I can wish for a Olympic-term injury to Esche instead of The Rick.

I saw that. Luongo is looking very good lately. Getting ready to try to be #1 at the Olympics. Plus the team is playing better now. He stoned Kovalev.

Alfie got hit by a slap shot (charas') in the rib last night and it cracked his rib. OUCH!! he will be out for a few weeks. Ottawa has ALOT of injuries right now.
Spezza, Havlet and now Alfie. That is huge. They have more, but don't remember.

Enh, I thought Cam getting back and making that swat on Forsberg was more impressive than that Luongo save.
