DETROIT (CP) - Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman has withdrawn his name from Canadian Olympic team consideration.

A Detroit spokesman confirmed Yzerman phoned Olympic boss Wayne Gretzky to say he would not play in Turin.

Yzerman also withdrew his name from the World Cup of Hockey in 2004, saying he wasn't up to it physically.

The Wings captain has three goals and five assists in 19 games this season.

That is sad.

Kudos to him for just withdrawing his name rather than saying "I'll give [insert over-hyped rookie's name here] my spot."

So Mario really did say that?

I hear reference to that or read a post, but thought someone was just poking fun at him, lol.

I seem to remember hearing it reported as Mario saying he'd give up his spot for Sid. haven't seen it in print though...

They were talking about him saying it on the XM hockey channel one day, I think. I don't think I've seen it in print, either. He may have said it in jest. But, I'm no fan so I'm willing to believe he was serious.
