nordgren has been next to worthless. besides staal, have the canes ever groomed any top six (or 1st round picks) into anything besides trade bait?
kurka
tanabe - traded to phoenix
defauw - less than 10 NHL games
tselios - never cracked an NHL game yet
lysak - 2 NHL games
bayda - showed potential on a terrible 03 team
heerema - drafted before tanguay, desrochers, gagne, scott gomez OUCH!
knyazev - WHO?
ziggy - jury is still out, nearly 25, it's time to show something
c.ward - jury is still out. should be a good one for years to come.
richmond - if any trade is to happen, teams will want him = trade bait
ladd- hopefully a piece of the future.
johnson - same as ladd.
and as long as whitney is on the power play, i dont care who else is out there, we score. tverdosky needs to show me something for his 2.5mil salary or i'll a bag of practice pucks for him.
and just because a guy can make slapshots in practice means nothing come game time. that comment makes no sense.
lets remember that stall, ladd and johnson were can't misses. anyone of us could have drafted those guys.

granted it is my opinion....but i think the facts clearly speak for themselves. i am as big as fan as anyone on this board.....i just tend to rate our players by their talent level/salary as opposed to how cute they are which seems to be the norm.
i hope nordgren proves me wrong and scores a ton this season. he skates fast and hard. but i think he is having trouble adjusting to the NHL. again, just my opinion.
i enjoy talking hockey as much as the next. sometimes my opinions may come across as a little brash, but i think i back them up well.

I beg to differ. If you've ever been to one of their practices - you see these guys translate the skills all the time. After all, I think that's the point of practice.
Read back through the practice reports by SoCal and her comments about Ziggy playing around after one practice before a game taking a wicked angle shot over and over and saying the goalie - can't remember now who cause I'm a little too ticked to look it back up - would get that one and then BANG! - that night - guess who scored...and how! The same shot he had been practicing that day. Coincidence?
If you watch - Commodore doesn't seem to TAKE that shot during a game - yet he nails them during practice. My comment was intended to say he SHOULD be taking them. He should be as potent, if not more so, than Kaberle.

if you wish to continue to be allowed to speak your opinion, I'd tread VERY lightly. As someone who first laced up over 25 years ago... I can assure you, the "norm" is nothing of the sort. Very much the opposite.
Again, tread lightly. brash is one thing. that bit above was completely another and isn't going to be tolerated.

You name 13 players there. What you fail to realize is only 7 of them were actually drafted in the first round.
lets remember that stall, ladd and johnson were can't misses. anyone of us could have drafted those guys.
Yep, any one of us probably could draft some great talent with a pick in the top 10 of damn near every draft....it get's a little harder from there on out. NONE of the other players you list were drafted top 10. None of them.
And I let it go in the first post, but what does Craig Adams' time on the PK have to do with his +/-? That's a comment that makes no sense.
And if you think Nik Nordgren is cute you got problems.

great, so now all we have to do is get the guys shoot the same shots in the games as the ones in practice and all our woes are solved!
btw, does this mean staal has been practicing sliding into the net on breakaways and lifting shots over goalies while lying on his back. :eek2:
oh and that was ziggy's only goal of the season, did he not practice before the other 18 games?

Wow - this is quite the turn in discussion.
Somehow us fans are supposed to defend the Canes 1st round draft choices? What for? The results speak for themselves. Some good, some not.
I will say that most times I've heard it discussed, beyond the top few choices each year, it's hardly a consensus as to whom will be the sure thing.
I will point out that some of our choices in later rounds have done okay - Cole and Vasicek.
And you are right, Whitney makes the PP incredibly good. As it should be - he's clearly the most handsome guy on the team.

if you dont understand, i'm sorry. why do you think k.adams and williams have a negative +/-??? when you spend alot of time on the ice when your team has 3-4 and the other team has 5, your +/- is going to suffer. make sense now?
wow....
and tread lightly? wtf does that mean? you all need to relax.
and yes some of those were second round picks but they were all the first ones we picked. and the bottom line is they are all pretty much worthless at this point. i do understand that below the first 10 picks the talent dropoff is considerable. things didnt go our for about 5 years.

Damn, you're right - I associated the story with a Rec Zone practice I watched (Ziggy was practicing that shot the day I remember). Takes away the great point illustration, but I still stand by the idea - you practice to execute during games.
They do practice, breakaways, shotouts, etc. and yes, the idea of practice is to gain muscle memory to do things without thinking/what you've practiced, during a game. I'd wager that Staal has 'practiced' shots like that alot in pick-up games over his lifetime with his brothers ( I think of the 14-17 year olds I see at pick up games and stick and pucks messing around with the goalies) as well as from coaching, etc. (NOT taking away from his natural abilities that no one would argue with)
Quote from the practice thread in October:
coach spent part of that conversation postioning Staal and telling him what 'appeared' to me, to keep moving- He had Staal mock skating in breakaway fashion, Laviolette had his stick on him, then moved toward him as if to hold him up- and then I heard him say "I like that move to get loose- let's keep that in mind all the time" and Staal was nodding.
Second. I may be mistaken, but although Ziggy has only scored one goal this season, didn't he score more goals in Lowell than Staal last year and lead the team (LockMonsters) in points in the playoffs? I could be mistaken, but I think that shows excellent potential.

Can I play too?
I love how "people" say Staal, Johnson, and Ladd were no brainer, can't miss picks. Funny, both Pittsburgh and Florida had a chance to pick Staal. Florida traded the first overall pick to the Pens after they won the lottery. Then Pittsburgh picked the "next Roy", Fleury. Seems to me that's two teams who passed on the "can't miss" pick before we picked him. Jack Johnson has yet to play an NHL game, so maybe we should reserve judgement before we say how how he is a can't miss. Would say the same for Ladd. But there are several "can't miss" draft picks over the years who indeed did miss, and miss bigtime.
As poorly as some think the Canes have drafted over the years, there are teams that have done worse. Like pass on Dany Heatley like the Islanders did. At least Rutherford didn't pass over Staal, he could have. Others did. If you are going to criticize the bad picks, you have to give credit for the good picks, or the ones they at least don't screw up.

Well, I'm bored too, so I just picked 1 name to double check.
Ryan Bayda. Third Round Pick, 2nd overall pick for the Canes.
Here's an easy one. Richmond. 2nd round and 2nd pick for the Canes in '02.
So either you haven't checked your facts, or your ability to communicate what you mean is sorely lacking.

You said even though some of those listed were second round, those were "all the first ones we picked" which, to me, meant they were our first pick in that draft. That's not true. DeFauw, Lysak, Bayda, none of them were our first picks.
Maybe you meant the first ones "we" as in this franchise after they moved to NC picked? I think we have a language issue because above you seem to say you were trying to list all our picks? Since moving to NC? That's not how I took what you originally said.
EDIT: Good, I'm not the only one who thought he meant we tooks those guys with our first pick.
corylav
12-06-2005, 04:07 PM
The other confusing part is, if you look thru the recent drafts, there aren't many great NHL guys after the guys we picked. In 2000 we picked Kurka in the early second ... the best forward, going by career NHL stats, taken after him in the draft, is prolly Ramzi Abid, with 23 points in 49 games. That was at No. 85 overall. At No. 97, we picked Nic Wallin, who has more points (and lots more games) than Abid.
The draft's really a crap shoot.

I'd have known those weren't all our first picks in each draft (several are from the SAME draft year, doofus) without the free time I had today. Doesn't take a stats genius to figure out that all those guys around the same age couldn't have all been drafted different years. Plus, you know, 13 guys in, what, 9 years and all. No we're all independently wealthy.
Actually, I looked up the Bayda thing because I wanted to be sure. The Richmond one I just knew - and actually wrote a typo on the draft year though (it was 03 not 02), thought about that while I was cooking dinner, there's that multi-tasking again.
But alas, you've missed the whole point. You laundry-listed a bunch of players, for what reason I'm STILL not clear on, but you didn't even support the (unknown) point because what you said wasn't true.
If there's one thing this board will do, is ask you for clarification, or shoot down supporting "facts" when they are totally false. So now that we have, you start the insults. Classic.
Okay - now I need to go rest up for the late game. With Whitney and Tverdovsky back in the lineup, the CQ (that's Cute Quotient) has gone up, which means we're sure to play well.

This is just a delightful thread. With JCAHO roaming around this week, work is the priority (hate it when that happens ;) ), but this is a fun one. Thanks to all who contributed. Very good medicine for a stressful week

and SHC sorry i didn't spell out first picks meant as in the first picks of each draft. but thanks for the correction. what else do you have to do with over 7000+ posts in not quite three years.
No, but her 7000+ and not being axed says a lot more than your 17 posts with a guillotine (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=guillotine) hanging over your head.
I took the liberty to link the word "guillotine" to a site with a definition; since you seem to have minimal cranial capacity, and might need a little help. We tend to be a helpful group of people :)

i have to admit, this has been quite some entertainment.
glad all of you have thick skin (snicker)...hate to see what happens if someone really said something off the wall.
i have no intentions of posting regularly so you dont have to start multyplying my posts......haha
seriously, if you think this was anything but fun for me, you are all sadly mistaken. i simply state and show the canes first pick(s) for the most part have been a bust, then all hell breaks loose. lol. all of a sudden i get grammar lessons, and all sorts of fun stuff.
bottomline, take the FIRST TWO picks from 97-02 and they suck.
glad i sent you all into "research and defend mode" though. also enjoyed the huge disclaimers on lottery and the draft being a crap shoot. i guess JR could just use a dart board with names next time.
anyhow, i got some good laughs. you guys have fun. maybe i can stop by every once in a while for entertainment. you ladies have fun and don't get too excited.......i'm just wish the rest of the bums that sit around me at the RBC got this excited.

both of you, knock it off. if you feel the need to talk trash at each other and setup a meeting, do it in PMs.
Then do it at 67W so I can be a part. :D

SHC bet you get to 8000 for anyone else.
Nah, it'll be just for me.
Maybe you meant before anyone else? (not a "grammar" lesson, just making sure I'm understanding you) Well, that is the plan. That's just what being an over-achiever does to you. :D
And, dammit, tommy, there are really people who wear red shoes to the games!!!

OK- I am putting this topic back, split from the original.... And, sans some of the worthless garbage. I think the rest is amusing enough to leave though... so I took the time to clean it up and separate it.

I was going to point that out earlier, because I did notice. But I suppose it's because you haven't thrown in any remarks about cuteness. ;)

Keep movin', movin', movin',
Though they're disapprovin',
Keep them Trollers movin' Rawhide!
Don't try to understand 'em,
Just rope and throw and grab 'em,
Soon we'll be living high and wide.
Boy my heart's calculatin'
My true love will be waitin',
be waiting at the end of my ride.
Move 'em on, head 'em up,
Head 'em up, move 'em out,
Move 'em on, head 'em out Rawhide!
Set 'em out, ride 'em in
Ride 'em in, let 'em out,
Cut 'em out, ride 'em in Rawhide.
tRollin', trollin', trollin'
tRollin', trollin', trollin'
tRollin', trollin', trollin'
tRollin', trollin', trollin'
Rawhide!
tRollin', trollin', trollin'
Though the streams are swollen
Keep them dogies trollin'
Rawhide!
Rain and wind and weather
Hell-bent for leather
Wishin' my gal was by my side.
All the things I'm missin',
Good vittles, love, and kissin',
Are waiting at the end of my ride
CHORUS
Move 'em on, head 'em up
Head 'em up, move 'em on
Move 'em on, head 'em up
Rawhide
Count 'em out, ride 'em in,
Ride 'em in, count 'em out,
Count 'em out, ride 'em in
Rawhide!
Keep movin', movin', movin'
Though they're disapprovin'
Keep them Trollers movin!
Rawhide!
Don't try to understand 'em
Just rope, throw, and brand 'em
Soon we'll be living high and wide.
My hearts calculatin'
My true love will be waitin',
Be waitin' at the end of my ride.
Rawhide!
Rawhide!
