Stars won't increase payroll

The Dallas Stars are not expected to increase their payroll for next season, meaning several players may not be back with the team this summer.
Stars owner Tom Hicks says he plans to meet with general manager Doug Armstrong next week to discuss the team's future. He has indicated that the Stars payroll likely will not climb beyond the current $66-million.
Hicks adds the team likely won't be a major player in the free agent market this summer.
"We don't need to do that," Hicks tells the Dallas Morning News. "Given the fact we're one year from expiration of a labor contract, I expect a pretty quiet summer."
Instead, Hicks says he hopes to alter the team's roster by bringing in something that money can't buy - desire.
"I think if you look around the league, the teams that seem to have the momentum have a mixture of quality veteran leadership and younger players with speed and desire. In hockey, desire can make up for a lot of the gap in skill."
The Stars will have to make a decision on defenceman Derian Hatcher, who becomes an unrestricted free agent in July and goaltender Marty Turco, who will be seeking an increase on the $600,000 he made this past season.
