I'm going to count a couple of youngsters that came over in the recent trades, soooo...

St. Jacques Think he can teach Mr. Minus (Tanabe) how to play some passionate D? I do -- all year next year.

Bayda Will be part of a new version of BBC -- Brind'amour, Bayda Cole. A dangerous line, especially just after FOV -- Frances, O and Vrbata.

Malec Another defenseman that can bring it. Boy, can he bring it.

Now, where I start wondering are guys like Hereema. And others...[/b]

The three you have named I agree with completely, and I can see heerema staying as well, possibly taking Svoboda's spot in the lineup. As far as the others, I do not see anybody staying right now but i see DeFauw as the first call up and Kurka as number 2. The jury is still out on Zigomanis and Surma.

Those are my favorites.... St. Jacques shows a lot of potential and can even score. Bayda.. can;t say enough - brings it both offensively and defensively with guys twice his size and Malec - same thing.. hope we get to see these guys with the rest of the veterans.

Mneh.

Nobber's on the way out, I think. He signed a one-year deal on the understanding (spoken or unspoken, either or both might be true) that he'd earn the raise that he wanted. It's kind of a safe bet that he's not earned that raise, I think.

I think Jaro might stay if he has a good camp.

The Mallet's a definite keeper, especially if he has a good camp.

My Man Ryan Bayda is another keeper.

Bruno might stick if he has a good camp. We'll see.

Brad's earned himself a reprieve from Career Minor-Leaguer status with his performance in his first few games.

Zig, Kurka, and Surma have earned themselves a shot at First Callup status.

Knyazev will stay in Lowell for at least another year I think, possibly two--the franchise is taking great care to NOT rush the man, because they don't want to ruin him.

Just my 1/50 of a dollar.

Oh yeah, I forgot about his "holdout." Based on that and his performance this season (-23?), I think that Tanabe will be gone in the off-season.

Seriously won't be surprised to see Tanabe go...kind of surprised that he hasn't already called up U-Haul. As I've said before, isn't a defenseman supposed to hit? Tanabe for the most part hasn't answered that question...

-23? That's....despicable.

Tanabe is all potential. Nothing else. Turnovers, bad passes, can't score, won't hit. Maybe he needs toplay for a bad Euro team or something.

Yes, Tanabe is currently -23... he is 862nd out of 868 players in the league. His stats are 3g, 10a in 60 games. By the way, he has never had a positive +/- in his career, and his career total +/- is -49.

Or maybe he should play forward on someone's grind line. He just doesn't strike me a defenseman.

My picks:

Definites: Bayda, the Mallet, Vrbata, Heerema

Maybe's: St. Jacques, DeFauw, Ziggy, Kurka

I hate to put anyone in a "probably not's" catagory. They've all done so well!

Problem there is that if he's a forward, he has to deal more with other d-men hitting him. And Tanabe just might break.

Quick question: aren't forwards supposed to be able to put the puck onto the goal when they shoot?

Ooops, that's right, yes they ARE.

Sorry Tanabe. No forward position for you!

I don't dislike Tanabe..but I think his play really sucks most of the time...I find that at home games, I groan because of something he has done or NOT done most of the time!! He is nowhere near where he needs to be to play in the league...Heddy and Aaron leave his ability in the dust!!

..oh and to the on-topic...Bayda and Bruno..excellent potential...I think Ziggy will do well given more ice time...I think our future looks bright!! :spin:

Sorry Tanabe. No forward position for you!

I think Tanabe's the odd man out as well, but from a points perspective, he's had a more "productive" year than Ward or Wallin with 10 fewer games. That said, he's certainly been a defensive liability. I've not been fond of the pairings for him either - Hedican and most recently St. Jacques. He and Hedican had a nice spurt early in the year, but they've both been less than consistent since then.

Since this topic has it's own thread now, i figured i'd repost my earlier thoughts on the matter.

============================================

I'm scared to even speculate at this point.

I have the feeling Irbe will finally be traded this summer. Weekes will be the big guy. The backup... well, it depends on what the Canes get for Irbe. If they get draft picks/prospects (which i'd consider most likely), DesRochers will be the man. If JR could somehow trade Irbe for Turco, however...

On D, i don't see much change. While having Wesley back would be ultra-cool, i don't think it'll happen. Hedican, Hill, Ward, Wallin... shoe-ins. Tanabe, Malec, St. Jacques... pick two. I personally hope Tanabe is the odd man out, but holding my breath i am not. I expect we won't be seeing as much of Bruno as i would like.

Up front... ack! With everyone healthy, it'll be ultra-tough for all the young guys to make the cut, no matter how much they deserve it. Francis, Brind'Amour, Vasicek, K. Adams... shoe-in centers, meaning Zigomanis will be back in Lowell.

A little toughter at the wing positions. O'Neill & Cole are givens, as is Vrbata. Beyond that? Who knows?!

Which leaves everyone else basically fighting for 5 spots, plus another guy who gets to watch every game from the press box. 5 spots to be divided between C. Adams, Bayda, Heerema, Kurka, Brendl, Svoboda, Hlavac, DeFauw, Surma, Druken, Boulerice, C-Mac, and Daniels, and i'm likely leaving someone out here.

C. Adams has done everything that has been asked of him and more, so he's likely in. Unless Hlavac is traded, you know he'll get a spot. Which leaves 3 spots.

The gut tells me Bayda and Heerema get two, and Daniels and Boulerice split the other, depending on the opponent. I'm no Mo, however, so what do i know?

I think if we want Turco, a kidnapping would be more in order. I'll create a diversion... I guess a girl can dream. I hope Irbe will be traded. We do have a good prospect I think in Cam Ward but not sure when he'll be ready to move up.

I pick Malec and St. Jacques. Tanabe much of the time is a waste of ice (IMHO). More of a detriment than an asset. The only thing he can really do well is grind in the corners.

My choices.. Bayda, Defauw - we need some size that can score, and hmmmmm Boulerice or Heerema. Not sold on Hlavac. Think we could do better.

I'm no Mo, however, so what do i know?

Good thing... what in the world would we do with two? http://www.smilies.org/basesmilies3/1036946134.gif

I think if we want Turco, a kidnapping would be more in order. I'll create a diversion... I guess a girl can dream. I hope Irbe will be traded. We do have a good prospect I think in Cam Ward but not sure when he'll be ready to move up.

I pick Malec and St. Jacques. Tanabe much of the time is a waste of ice (IMHO). More of a detriment than an asset. The only thing he can really do well is grind in the corners.

Which leaves everyone else basically fighting for 5 spots, plus another guy who gets to watch every game from the press box. 5 spots to be divided between C. Adams, Bayda, Heerema, Kurka, Brendl, Svoboda, Hlavac, DeFauw, Surma, Druken, Boulerice, C-Mac, and Daniels, and i'm likely leaving someone out here.

what noMo said.

i also agree that c. adams has sealed himself a spot. i've really been waffling on tanabe, but with the way bruno and the mallet have been playing (and the whole -23 thing?! jeez!), i'm hoping tanabe is out.

what a great problem to have though, huh? :D camp will be interesting, indeed. :smoke:

Bayda, definite.
Surma, possibility, but probably Lowell.
DeFauw, deserves a chance, but needs some schooling - work.
St. Jacques, hasn't done anything that's shown he doesn't already desrve a spot.
Malec, are you kidding, I say he is SO in.
Vrbata, see Malec.
Heerema, will be among the land of healthy scratches.
Zigomanis, love the kid, will depend on his off season training, add some meat!
Kurka, I would like to see more of him, but could use a tad more seasoning.
Knyazev, will he EVER be ready? What's with this guy?

On the fence.......
Hlavac, Druken, Boulerice.

Wish List.......
A Bertuzzi in the rough, a solid goalie, and the return of #2.

I agree with everything that's been said. I would like to see a bit more of Hereema next year though....he impressed me with his play during the few games he was in before his injury. Obviously Vrbata's got great sense with the puck as well along with Bayda. It appears like we will have more than enough forwards to choose from come next year.

What about D though?

Would time in Lowell do a Tanabe good?

These questions remain to be answered. There's always the chance that we might be able to reacquire Wesley before next season....

Tanabe cannot be sent to Lowell without clearing waivers. Regardless of when he was drafted, etc. (which I am too lazy to look up), he has played 243 NHL games. Once you have played 160 (including playoff games), you are automatically eligible for the waiver draft.

Hereema is an excellent player with a bright, bright future...I had kind of forgotten about him since I haven't seen him on the ice in so long!  ...not actually forgotten!!

I think he has proven himself...but there will be many to try and move ahead of him in line!!

As I said before, I believe there are great days ahead for our beloved Canes!! Baby Canes and all!! :D ;)

I'm not saying I agree with it but I wouldn't be surprised to see DeFauw up here in September....possibly at the expense of one of the other deserving Lowellites. JR did say that DeFauw would be Bates' replacement.

I am just SO glad that we are even able to have a discussion about who will be here next year in which the problem is that there are too many great players to choose from!
