PITTSBURGH -- Penguins owner-captain Mario Lemieux will not play for the Canadian Olympic hockey team.
Lemieux informed Team Canada executive director Wayne Gretzky a couple days ago, the Penguins said on their Web site Saturday. The Turin Games begin Feb. 10.
"I enjoyed playing in the 2002 Olympics, especially winning the gold," Lemieux said. "It was a great experience and I would've loved to be there this year, but considering my play so far, the way I've been feeling and some of the young guys we have for Team Canada, I think it's much better to go that route."
The 40-year-old Lemieux was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation after being admitted to the hospital Wednesday with a rapid heartbeat. The condition is commonly treated with medication and is not expected to end his career or alter his life.

Glad he opted to not keep that spot from someone who might prove to be a better fit.

Yeah, he was - since he was Captain last go round and frankly he's in the Wayne club..... .....
I'm glad he's not life threateningly ill- and I'm glad he has bowed out in favor of the 'young legs' - He was pretty gracious on FSN Pittsburgh Sports Tonight, although the way the PIT FSN feed played it out, it made it seem like he was strictly lobbying for Crosby to take his spot- then she showed the entire interview and he specifically named Staal & Spezza, well actually he said all three should be on Team Canada, so good for Mario, he spread the praise around. ;)
