I figured this deserved it's own thread.

NHL.com says the announcement will be made at the first intermission of the Stars/Wild game tonight on OLN. Cole said with AG this afternoon that it would be made at the start...at 8pm.

If anyone sees/hears the list, post it please!

EDIT: The headline at NHL.com says first intermission but the full story says this:

Dr. Mike Emrick and John Davidson, OLN's top broadcast team and also the two men that will provide play-by-play and color commentary for NBC's coverage of men's ice hockey during the 2006 Olympic Winter Games, will reveal the 23-man roster live from the ice surface at the Xcel Energy Center beginning at 7:05 p.m. CST.

So, 8:05 eastern.

I hope the folks in Turin put some sturdy furniture in the athletes' dorm, because Derian Hatcher and Chris Chelios are on the team.

(Cole made it, btw--the only Cane to get on Team USA)

Erik made it! No other Canes. I taped it, but I'm sure there will be a list on some site soon.

Phones are ringing off the hook in Oswego tonight!

Goalies are Bob Esche and John Grahame--I kinda lost track of everything except Colesy after they announced the defence.

edit: and DiPietro. I knew I'd missed something. :p

Well, I was hoping for Cullen on that list and know he was kinda on the outside chance thing- but damn, now that the announcement has been made, I'm a little ticked. Mr. Overweight @ Training Camp Keith Tkchacuk gets picked and not Cullen? Grrrr. and I don't know about anyone else, but Hatcher with his slow self doesn't quite fit Lavi's brand of hockey, and was Chelios the 'freebie' throw in there or are we living in the past???? Where is Hedican in this??? No, I'm not being a homer- I'm just sayin'.......

SHC- maybe that pow-wow after practice with Matt & Lavi was the "sorry you didn't make the team" speech eh?

I know I'm supposed to be waving pom poms and rah, rah, cause that's totally American and all- but I'm not feelin' this squad.

On the positive note- I like Conroy, J-M Liles, and of course our guy #26. Congrats to Erik :usa: - well deserved

wow, surprised Tkachuk made it?? Sure he has played well when healthy but I have lost track of how many times I have had to IR him in fantasy hockey. Just broke his knuckles and is out 4-6 weeks. He has only played in 10 games this season.

I definitely think Hedi should have made it. He has 3 goals, 7 assists, +8, a PPG, a SHG, and a GW. Certainly WAY better numbers than Aaron Miller, Chris Chelios, and Jordan Leopold. Think Lavi was worried about picking too many from his own team?

Well, if we're to believe Waddell, et al- the selection is made based on 'this season's play' - so Hedican should have had serious consideration- Aaron Miller, ok- Jordan Leopold has Hedican-like wheels- just a terrific skater- but the one's sticking in my craw are Chelios and that fraud Tkachuk.

So he's out 4-6 weeks, will be back just in time for Turin, and he'll have rust to shake off. Oh- ok- that makes soooo much sense .

I don't think Lavi had any say - as every time I heard him interviewed or read an interview he deferrred to Waddell and Co.......

This is making me madder than I thought I'd be. So I better get better news on Wednesday and hear that one Eric Staal is selected, or I'm gonna be pretty sour......

SHC- maybe that pow-wow after practice with Matt & Lavi was the "sorry you didn't make the team" speech eh?

I thought it was something like that. Particularly when I saw the exchange between him and Cole afterwards. Looked like a "Good on ya" from Cullen and a "Sorry man" from Cole. And then, Cullen was so lost in thought he missed McCarthy calling his name and sending him the puck on that one-timer drill. I figured Lavi had at least said "Whatever happens tonight....." I'm really disappointed for him.

I agree on Hedican, too.

The XM guys today were talking about the lack of input Lavi has had. And particularly how much less input he's had than Quinn will. Cam Stewart was also a big Cullen proponent. Really thought his skill and speed was perfect for the Olympic ice. I was hoping he'd make it. Maybe he'll get the taxi squad at least. And with injury-prone Tkachuk he might end up playing!! I'll try not to spend the next 2 months hoping for injuries to Team USA centers and D-men.

I'd imagine if Lavi really had had much input there'd be a lot more younger guys. I have a feeling he'd have gone more for a change of the guard kind of thing.

Would also like a Team USA Cole Jersey-as would Romney. Santa doesn't have enough time to make any for Christmas. :spin:

And what number should the jersey be? How much control do the players have in that aspect?

That portrait reminds me...Canada's Olympic jerseys are heinous, but the USA's are even worse.

Despite the broken thumb, it's an absolute travesty that Esche got picked over Ryan Miller.

That portrait reminds me...Canada's Olympic jerseys are heinous, but the USA's are even worse.

Despite the broken thumb, it's an absolute travesty that Esche got picked over Ryan Miller.

They'll all deserve their own thread when their countries make their announcements, but gosh - we'll have a nice Olympic send off won't we? (Too bad I don't currently have tix to that game, lol)

The N/O lists Gerber, Kaberle, Tverdovsky all as Olympians for their countries. And Staal hopefully!!!

Plus Laviolette and Huffine.

Maybe Cullen will make that taxi squad?

Nicer than that send off with Sami and Tom Barrasso, huh?

Okay - someone bring this sign tonight:

"Erik, Bring Back Gold From Turin, but Beat the Lightning First, okay?"

I wondered about Hedican. I can see both sides of him wanting and not wanting to go. Obviously, he's a former Olympian as is his wife, so I guess that go work either way - another Olympics to enjoy...or not necessary.

Kristi was some sort of "Embassador" at the 02 SLC Olympics and he got to enjoy those games with her as a VIP.

Perhaps with a new baby and a great start to his season (not even counting his recovery from the back surgery) he wouldn't want to push his luck?

But, my guess is that he would be there if they wanted him.

Player who might make the difference?

Erik Cole might well be one of the streakiest players in the NHL. Still, playing for Laviolette in Carolina, Cole has helped the 'Canes become a force in the Eastern Conference with his speed and deft touch around the net. With the big ice surface in Turin, he has the potential to emerge as a go-to guy for the Americans. Watch for him to line up with Mike Knuble and Modano, a line that had good success at last year's World Championships.

Warning, this is a bit of a vent.

AFter sending all three of my kids (8,10, & 14) off to school in their #26 jerseys, I was quite annoyed with the local paper. I expected to see a front page article and picture for the first Oswegonian to make the Olympics. The only mention of ERik on the front page was a sidenote updating how many points he has (translates into how much money he is donating to the library). There was a decent article and small picture on the sports page, but c'mon. Oswego has been dragged though the mud lately with scandals, this was front page worthy.

On a good note, the Syracuse morning paper (the largest "big" city) did have a front page article on the 4 from the area that are on the team, with pictures. And from what my 14 year old said, many people were wearing their Canes apparel at the high school today to show support for Erik.

I'm holding my breath that they realize their mistake and do something when the Olympics get closer.

Thank you for letting me vent.

I'd rather have Miller/DiPietro than Miller/Esche, but Miller is much better than any of the guys currently on the team.

Agreed. I heard EJ Hradek talking about asking Waddell why Miller didn't make the team on Adam Gold's show yesterday. There apparently isn't a good answer, either.

Read today that DiPietro "wasn't favoring" a leg after the game last night, though. Evidently he wasn't as hurt as he looked. Not that I wishing injury on anyone....but if it happened to happen....

Who knows whether Esche will be ready, anyway.

This article was written in our local paper. Too bad it wasn't in the online version so I could just post a link. It's a long read, but a good one for any of Erik's fans.

A tribute to Erik Cole: NHL star, Olympian by Pete Sears

I can remember watching a young, feisty, cocky kid back in the late 1980s and early '90s at the Cullinnan and Crisafulli rinks. He was one of the many Oswego minor hockey players that looked like he had the potential to be a good one.
Today, I sit here with chills going up my spine because this young man, Erik Cole, has been selected to represent his country in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Italy Feb. 13-27.
Having been fortunate enough myself to have gone through the Olympic experience in 1972, I know the emotions that Erik is experiencing.
First of all was the thrill of even begin considered for the team, then waiting and anticipating the announcement that you have made the team. Finally is the experience of the games themselves, with all of the atmosphere, pageantry, and the chance to wind a medal.
The excitement, the memories, and the pride he feels will be with him every day for the rest of his life.
I was one of the fortunate coaches that had an opportunity to see what Erik could do firsthand. He played for the Oswego High School hockey team in the 1994-94 and 1995-96 seasons. It was during this time that I realized how special this athlete really was. Everyone could see the obvious things - his skating, shooting, stickhandling, passing, and scoring skills. But many players have these skills. There were other qualities that made me believe that Erik was destined for greatness.
*His drive, desire, determination, heart, and the relentless effort to improve and win.
*His aggressiveness. He thrived on competition.
*His responsibility. He recognized his mistakes and the need for change and improvement.
*His leadership, not vocal, but by example.
*His self-confidence, his belief that he could handle challenges. He never had any self doubt.
*HIs emotional control. He delivered top performances, regardless of the circumstances.
*His mental toughness. He could accept criticism, recover quickly from setbacks, and not give in when the going got tough.
*His coachability. He was receptive to coaches' advice and played within the team's system. I have been asked what I did as a coach to help ERik as a player. My response is that I learned much more from him than he ever learned from me.
*His trustworthiness. His coaches and teammates knew they could depend on him in all situations.
*His preparation. He wanted to make things happen, not hope for or wait for things to happen. He always had a plan for each game and each shift on the ice.
*His enthusiasm. He loved the game and thrived on hard. work. It was fun for him, not a chore.
*His focus. He never took his eyes off his goals.
*His ability to handle pressure. He was always the player other teams keyed on. He enjoyed the challenge.
*His ability to make other players around him better.
*His understanding parents. Sheri and Dennis encouraged and supported Erik, but did no push him. They knew if it was meant to be, it had to come from within him.
Erik had expectations for himself above and beyone what other athletes had. He had goals, dreams, and aspirations, that made him focus religiously year-round. Many athletes have potential, but a select few have the discipline to stay on course every day to get what they want. These choices that ERik made are what enabled him to determine and take control of his own destiny.
He had natural gifts, ye, but never took anything for grtanted, pushing himself when he was on the ice with his teams, and probably more imporantly when he was on his own off the ice, when nobody was around. No one outworked Erik.
From Oswego minor hockey to Oswego HIgh School to junior hockey in the USHL to Clarkson University to the National Hockey League and now the U.S. Olympic team, Erik had a plan, a dream, a goal that step by step has enabled him to be successful at every level.
He is playing for the Carolina Hurricanes, and even though he no longer resides in Oswego, he has not forgotten the place where he grew up and sculpted his dreams that have become reality today.
Recently, he has volunteered to be the honorary chairman for the Oswego Public Library Capital Campaign to help raise funds for the rehabilitation and restoration of our historic building here in the city.
In his "Score for Oswego" challenge, Erik has offered to give $1,000 for each point he accumulates this NHL season, if the donation is matched by business, and/or individual donors here locally.
Erik has come full circle, giving back to his home community, where his dreams all began. Oswego was the place of the foundation for his success.
I am so proud of the way Erik has handled his fame and each time I see him playing on the television or in person, in the NHL or in the Olympics, I will remember that young, feisty, cocky kid who had the potential to be a good one and made it come true.

Does anyone know when the US taxi squad will be announced? I would like to think that with the way he's playing that Cullen will be heading over there.

They don't actually have to announce or even pick a squad, I don't think. It's just that they are allowed 3 player replacements if necessary. Canada just used it to cover their a** for picking old players over good ones.

I'm afraid unless a center goes down, Cullen won't make it. Which really sucks cause I was really looking forward to watching him play!!

Who knows, though, they might pick 3 to take over just cause Canada did. If so, I'd certainly hope Cullen would be top of the list!
