View Full Version : Third Jersey

I'm bored and it's too hot to work in the garden this weekend...I'm thinking about sewing a third jersey to wear to the Canes games next season. Anyone have any ideas about colors, logos, etc?

Black is the key... You need a black dominance with possibly the hurricane flag as the main logo. That's what I'd imagine the future 3rd jersey would/will look like.
Black and red...very little white. It'd look sharp! :smoke:

I figured Black would be the choice color...Do you think the hurricane warning flag (red w/black square) would show up well on a black jersey? Any other ideas for trim deco or colors around the bottom and arms? I thought maybe trimmed in gold since the regular jersey uses silver?

oooo, you know i think that WOULD look pretty sharp. black as the main color, the flag logo with white outline huge on the chest, and everything that is silver now make gold. :D

gold is definitely a cool idea... as long as it isn't too much... of course we could always make it completely gold, and be the Carolina Cash Money Millionaires... ok, sorry about that. :p

Can't you just see ol' Ronnie wearing some Ice during a game? Forget the C on the shoulder....a big C in diamonds hanging from a 24k gold chain... :smoke:

Great...first, Ronnie the wrestler (http://www.letsgocanes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=13554#13554), and now Ronnie the rap star...or Mr. T wannabe...
"I pity da fool who disses my chains and team!"
Actually, I envision Ronnie as being more like Hannibal "I love it when a plan comes together!" Smith with O being like Mr. T. If O was willing to put highlights in his hair, who says he can't grow a mohawk and wear gold chains? Afterall, O *is* the stylish Cane... :D
Note: My apologies to the two mentioned Canes...I've been on quite a roll lately. First, my first Iron Cane Chef Competition's ending (http://www.missfantastic.com/stormbringer/scribblings/reviews/cooking/icc/icc01.htm), and now this...  ;)

I was given two suggestions for the trim around the bottom of the jersey- either use the hurricanes present logo (storm swirl) or just print in bold "HURRICANES" all the way around...what do you think?
Turbulence
05-15-2003, 09:24 PM
Logo definately....I think HURRICANES in big block letters would look tacky...if my opinion means anything. I'm not very fashion-smart. :spin:

Don't worry, appreciate your input! I thought I would prefer the logo as well. I wish I could draw better, but I think I'll have to make several sketches and see what I like. Heading to the fabric store tomorrow to scope out the possible fabrics....Just gotta keep the hockey juices flowing somehow - it's gonna be a looooooong summer!

If you know someone with access to an overhead projector (such as a teacher), this might work for you. I used one to outline an eye on my son's wall and it worked great. Usually people think of overheads for largers projects, but I've found they work well for smaller projects as well.
Have fun sewing.

So, if I put on all the deco, names and numbers with velcro, I could change anything to match a different player every game.....Rhinestones on the "C" (I can't afford real gems) for #10, leather and leopard trim around the hem and cuffs for #92, gauze and cloth tape for #36, "this space for rent" sign for #1?
I won't have to submit pics...I'll get seats on the glass and give the showoff "Dancing Queen" a run for her money!!
Ashleygirl
05-31-2003, 10:38 AM
Okay - I drew up several jersey designs and shopped for fabric options. The basic color is black, with red and then used silver and gold trim and highlights. I think the design looks great and I can't wait to strart sewing it up! I had to order fabric since I wasn't able to find a shop with all the right colors...like black(?)!!! so my project is a little delayed. I'll try to have pics available once I get it finished. I plan on making 6 jerseys to start, so I'll have my own little support group at all the games!
The last question was to add names (players or our own) and numbers to the back or to leave it plain.....I thought using our own nicknames might be fun. Any other ideas before the stitching begins?
Turbulence
05-31-2003, 11:18 AM
Sounds like it's coming along nicely!
If you ask me, I like the idea of having real player's names and numbers...I'd go with blank only as a last option.
Nicknames sound cool too...but if it were me I'd go with the real players.
Can't wait to see it! :spin:
Ashleygirl
05-31-2003, 11:54 AM
real names pf players is what I preferred, but now I have the dilemma of choosing again...I couldn't choose on my other jersey, so I was just given #13 and now he's gone. Guess I'd better choose a player that has little chance of going away, but then if I'm the one sewing ont he stuff, guess I can change it anytime I want as well...back to my velcro theory!!
Turbulence
05-31-2003, 12:16 PM
Velcro is the answer to all problems...
But if you have to make it permenant, make a Francis jersey. He'll retire wearing the sightless eye...plus, he's one of the greatest ever. A Francis Carolina sweater will never get old. THe other good bet is Brind'Amour...I don't see him going anywhere. Maybe Jeff O'Neill, as well. And Hedican for another option.
On second thought....just velcro it.
Ashleygirl
05-31-2003, 04:24 PM
Oh, Hedican is a good idea - I think I could live with his # if he doesn't change it every year. Thanks for the reply!!

Real boring - mine will be so much better (I hope). Beside, you can't use the same logo on a basically white jersey, can you?
Mine is black, with diagonal gold and silver stripes on the sleeves and into a "v" across the front and back. Red fills in the bottom of the jersey and the bottom of the sleeves. Front logo: used the red flad with black square and a hockey stick for the flag pole - all on a gold triangular background. Kinda hard to describe, but I'm cutting out the pattern to start the logo patch tonight and will be burning up my sewing machine this weekend...especailly if it's raining :spin:

Yes, I posted some info on my third jersey over on CH.com yesterday cause people were going on and on about wanting a third jersey, but something different. There was a long thread going on, but no real suggestions for a design. I questioned what they would like and one person anserwed, but didn't offer any usable info. I got much better support and suggestions on this board.

I like that a lot Aaryn. However... it's much easier to do color gradients in photoshop, than it is on real fabric. I don't think any team has a two-tone fade like that... I'm sure it would be Very difficult to do with cloth.

Actually, it isn't difficult at all. My wife is a fashion designer and works for a garment company. I consulted her before I began this project, and asked that very question. She said that a couple of years ago, yes, it was something that would have been hard to do, but not now (see the canucks 3rd jersey). BTW, as I said before, I did this in Illustrator and then made the jpeg in Photoshop.

you can probably figure out most of the emails of front office folks... I think all of them use one of two formats.
1. first name followed by first letter of last name (ie- buzzw)
2. first letter of first name, followed by full last name (ie- pkarmanos- that one probably doesn't work, just showing you. hehe)
Unfortunately I didn't keep all of my front office emails when we had a big issue, and I talked to Everyone. *kicking myself for not keeping those addresses*
I'd try Ken Lehner (marketing). Good guy and I'm sure he'd give them a good look, and pass them to the right people. I'd guess his would be klehner@carolinahurricanes.com, but it's a guess.
Worst comes to worst (you can't get through to ken), have one of us ask our rep if we could have you send that stuff to them for them to pass it on.

Dear Aaryn,
Thank you for your interest in the Carolina Hurricanes. Although we
appreciate your enthusiasm, we are not in a position to accept outside
input with respect to a potential third party due to advice from our legal

I think this might also mean that come the time that they want to create one, they don't want a stream of people claiming it was their design ripped off. I guess your email self-destructed to destroy the evidence. ;)
I guess I never thought about it, but considering there are 3 colors and 2 main logos, any designs have a great probability to look similar.
Sorry Aaryn. I hope you enjoyed the process. :)

Guess I should have warned you since I've talked with a few people about submitting an idea for a third design. I'm still sewing my idea into a jersey for a few of us to wear. Some Canes folks have expressed interest in seeing the product, for kicks and giggles only though and I'm okay with that. Maybe when they are ready to jump into the third market they'll offer a design contest and we can compete!!

You see, here's the thing. My initial email to Mr. Lehner was to the effect that I was interested in producing some designs for a possible third jersey, inquiring as to how to go about getting in touch with the people who may be involved in such a project, and did NOT include any attached samples. I can understand their apprehension about using third party sources for graphic design due to them having an on-staff graphic design team, but again I was just inquiring as to what protocol was. So, no I'm not surprised, a little disappointed, but not surprised. Stay tuned, I'm not licked yet.
To see my latest creations (#'s 3, 4 and 5) you can check them out here....

Again, ANY feedback is appreciated for any of my work that is there.

Aayrn, I have been debating the jersey treatments and I vote for #3...I like the gray..
OK, I finally have a firm vote. Other than having my name spelled incorrectly (I'm teasing, I've dealt with that for over 29 years now), I would really appreciate some more feedback. I have more ideas, and though Mr. Lehner and the Hurricanes don't seem to want to look at my ideas, on behalf of the best Hurricanes fans I have ever met (all of you [do I sound like Mick Foley looking for a cheap pop yet?]), I will not give up. Come on lgc.com-ers, talk to me!

Just in case anyone wanted to see some more of the concepts I have come up with for a potential Hurricanes Third Jersey, please check them out here.........

In the folder marked "Hurricanes Third Jersey Concepts". I have only posted 4 more today (time would not permit more here at work).

Thanks for all your replies and comments. What I am really looking for is some input. What would y'all like to see? What modifications could I make to the 9 I have posted that would make them more pleasing to you? Who among you would like to help me stick these ideas up Ken Lehner's nose (kidding)?

There's actually a very good reason why the 'Canes won't accept submissions of this type from fans--it's the same reason why authors won't read unsolicited manuscripts from fans:
Plagiarism.
Allow me to be more specific:
Let's say that I'm a successful science-fiction author (or a writer of murder mysteries, or westerns, or whatever). J. Random Fan sends me a manuscript for "this really awesome story" that he wrote. If I read that manuscript or do anything other than send it back unread with a letter saying "I'm sorry, I can't look at this", then I open myself up for a potential lawsuit from J. Random Fan sometime down the road should I wind up publishing a book that's similar to his manuscript in any way, shape, or form.
Don't laugh, stuff like this can and does happen.
That is why Ken Lehner sent you the response he did, Aaryn. It protects you, and it protects the 'Canes.
It wasn't a "piss off"--it was a "We don't want to risk a potential lawsuit, because we don't know you from Adam and have no way of knowing whether or not you'd sue us if we wound up using something similar to your idea."
Just my 1/50 of a dollar

Actually, in this sense, no there is no "Plagiarism" since none of concepts were ever submitted. But I do understand your example. I emailed Mr. Lehner asking how to go about submitting these to the Hurricanes through proper channels.
Keep in mind, I do work as a Prepress Technician / Graphic Designer for a Printing and Publishing company, and I do understand "intellectual rights" to work (ie: solicited or unsolicited work and the use of copyrighted logos and images).
I am still trying to get the Hurricanes to look at these or put me in touch with the Advertising Agnecy they are using for other promotional materials or their internal Media Design department, which ever the case may be, so that I avoid the types of issues your scenario touches on. Thank you for your concern in this area. It's all under control.

my favorite is still number 2. i also like number 9 but i don't like the grey...could you do one like that with red or black instead of grey?
my favorites are the ones with just the alternate flag logo, no writing or anything else -- i think it's too cluttered with all that stuff, it's best to just keep it simple.
if they do come out with a 3rd jersey sometime, i wouldn't be surprised if it ends up looking like one of yours....if they have good taste, that is. http://www.electrichyena.com/other/redthumb.gif

Of course if they do use one of yours they'd have to put a big tag on the back that says DESIGNED BY AARYN...:)
The C A N E S definitely makes it look cluttered on 3,4,5,6 and 7. I'd stick to just a logo. If I were to pick two that really grab me as fantastic are 8 and 9. I really like the use of black, but I think it's important not to have black-overkill (as in #2) and integrate some red on the sides. 7 definitely looks more 'sleek' with the red on the sides of the torso. The grey on the shoulders looks a bit out of place. I suppose on ice and made of real fabric it would look different, but on 'paper' it looks bland. I'd try to use either Red or Black there...black would probably make the most sense.
Very good though....I'd love to see any of these jerseys on the ice!

My jersey design is coming along too. I sewed one up , but I hated the fabric (too thin and didn't hang right), so I started over. I hope to finish this weekend and will wear it to the next home game. This has been a fun project!!

Aaryn! Those are all so great! I don't have much input to add because I'm just not creative enough. My favorites are #2 and #9. I'm like hyena....I like to keep it simple. I'm not a fan of the color gradients and I don't much like the diagonal sections of color. I'm pretty boring. I actually like #4 pretty well but overall I like just the strom flag on the front because I'm just a fan of one main chest logo without the extras. So, basically, they are all very appealing designs but because of my really purist attitde about hockey jerseys I like #2 and #9 best. :)

Since everybody else has given their opinions and picks, I'll chime in with a little more than just "Me like.". ;)
Favorite design?
A little tricky but not too, since I like the gradients, but am also a member of the "KISS Army" too. With that said, I find myself the most partial to jersey designs number one and three. Overall though, three wins out because of it being simple, there not being too much going on, and it being my general idea for quite sometime of what the Canes' third jerseys should look like. Though, another design I think would be a cool idea is similar to your design #6 Aaryn...take design number three, and replace the flag logo on that with the diagonal "CANES" or "CAROLINA". The result would be a (IMO) neat design that would be reminiscent of the classic Pens' jersey that featured "PITTSBURGH" running across diagonally.
Nitpicks:
Just one...the flag logo designs with the sun circling around (Which, I know hails from the Canes' Summer Hockey Camp logo. :)) reminds me just a little too much of the Florida Panthers' secondary logo (http://www.laughinghyena.net/LogoServer/hockey/FloridaPanthers8.GIF). But other than that, it does make for an unique use of the Canes' secondary logo.
