Defenseman to undergo hernia surgery today
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Jan. 11, 2006
RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that defenseman Aaron Ward will undergo surgery today to repair a hernia. Ward left the Hurricanes’ game against Detroit in the second period on Tuesday and did not return. He is expected to miss three to six weeks following the surgery.
The Carolina Hurricanes continue a three-game home stand on Friday against the Nashville Predators (7 p.m., Hurricanes Radio Network) before wrapping up the home stand with a Sunday matinee against the St. Louis Blues (1:30 p.m., Hurricanes Radio Network). Individual game tickets for all remaining Hurricanes home games can be purchased at the RBC Center box office, all TicketMaster outlets, by calling 919-834-4000 or via CarolinaHurricanes.com. For information on Hurricanes season-ticket packages and mini-season ticket plans, please call 1-866-NHL-CANES.

If we can hang in there until the Oly break, then hopefully he'll be back.
I hope we can enjoy him with John/Tripp and/or Chuck in the meantime.

It's still a big chunk of time but thanks to the Olympic break that will only be around 15 games.

Olympic break
I just noticed how long that was on the schedule. Will give all our guys (minus our Olympians) a chance to heal up before the last stretch of the regular season.

With Ward and Wesley out, does anyone think we might be in the trade market for a D-Man or 2? Thoughts, please.

So sorry to see this. Aaron is such an important part of our D. He is so tough. I hope he mends quickly. This may be a stupid question but since Jesse is not being used offensively, could he fill in on the defense? I have seen him play all kinds of positions in practice.

i think he can fill in as a grinder, almost like dressing a 7th d-man... as far as playing the position smartly.... im not sure.

I don't think Jesse has the wheels for it. He's no Sami K., that's for sure.

Am I missing something or do you guys not think that Danny Richmond can fill in for the fifteen games and that since you have to give to get, that a trade could do more harm than good?

I would think that the remaining healthy 6 defensemen have some pride here and will have to step up. I'm sure they WANT to step up. Commodore showed what he can do last night, Hedican was unbelievable and played a ton of minutes. I would think that last period, without Glen and Aaron, against the top team in the league and the top PP in the league, had to prove something. They can't be under the gun like that for the next 15 games, but I think they can hang on. But you've got to think that Wallin and Hutchinson want to contribute to this team - and now is the time they need them.
If it looks like the wheels are falling off, then sure, JR makes a move - but I wouldn't expect it until then.

Yeah ... good idea. Tripp and an everlasting opportunity to talk about groins ... gooooood one.
I don't think we need to deal for a D, but I think Richmond playing ahead of Hutchinson as a defensive d-man is definitely the right move. Hutch scares the hell out of me whenever he gets an even-strength shift. I say still get him the occassional even-strength shift, but left Richmond handle the bulk of the sixth-d-man role.
Luckily, Kaberle has been great in his recent PK chances, IMO. At the game last night, I was commenting to my friend how great he looked out at the top of our box. Then Zetterberg scored ... lol. But that was a reflection on Frank's play at all.
Man ... how great is it to have depth!?!

I think Danny did a good job when he was here before. I trust him and his judgement. I love Oleg but sometimes when he is handling the puck in front of our net, I have to admit I get a little nervous.

I think we'll definitely see Richmond back in a Canes uni before JR pulls a trade. If things start to suffer, then go for Spacek IMHO.

I'd be really surprised if Richmond isn't called up. Dressing 7 dmen works so why would we stop now?

Just spitballin', what do you think the price to the Hawks for Spacek would be? Surely more than draft choices...
That's what worries me about trades...we've got so little dead wood right now that it would mean a clip in the muscle and bone somewhere. Heck, I don't even have a player I can dog at the moment, unlike even the SCF run year where I had my "favorites" that seemed to disappear out on the ice. Tanabe was the one that year... Alumnus Shootin' Sami Kapanen got his revenge on me the other night with overtime winner... ;) Showed me! Ha!
