Playing Philadelphia – always a tough game, and knowing our team, there’s never a dull moment. They just better come out A LOT sharper than they did facing St. Louis.
Now… I’m a stats junkie. I love looking at stats. Do y’all realize that in our last 15 games, we are 12-1-2?
Also…. Last night, I looked up our record for the 2001-02 season, and you know we only need 5 more wins to tie that season’s 35 wins??? In fact—we got into the play-offs that year with a total of only 91 points….. so surely, we’ll pass that.
There’s a good thought, to start your week!

I'd really love to stick to the Flyers on their ice ... I feel like if we lose the "only wins at home" label — which, for the record, is ridiculous — is going to become a running theme in the media.
Go get 'em boys!!

Big game against Philly...they only have 1 point less than us, but are 4th in the league because of a tiebreaker...
We have a long and proud history of bringing it against the best teams in the league...now that we're among them in the standings, it's really time to bring the big game. Here's to hoping Gerber is awesome and the banged-up D can hold against Forsberg, Gagne and the guys.

We've got to keep this momentum going. And if there is a team to break it, Philly will- unless we keep doing what we've been doing. We are finally being taken seriously as a true contender in the league. If we can maintain this pace for the next 4 weeks until the Olympic break, the guys will be able to rest up and we'll come back for the remaining 6 weeks of the regular season with our full roster back & ready for action.
Let's kick some Philly butt!!

Staal has been getting better and better since his slump; so Lord knows what kind of damage he'll do against the Flyers tonight!! And Whitney can continue his points-streak as well...
Should be a fun game!

Some respect from Philly ... courtesy of writer Tim Panaccio's blog:
Hurricanes Taking Us by Storm
Forecast: Club owner Peter Karmanos boldly predicted he’d compete with the Flyers in free agency under the new CBA. Then he sent his fans this note: Hey Raleigh, the joke’s on you. Two years in succession missed playoff after going to the finals. Add another year right now. No O’Neill and even bigger, no Ron Francis (retired) in the dressing room which is where Whitney comes in. Eric Staal has marvelous potential to help Rod Brind’Amour in the dressing room. Erik Cole is a dynamic, young Team USA player who would flourish if the offense comes. Martin Gerber is a nice, young upgrade in goal although many think Cam Ward will eventually be No. 1.
The above paragraph appeared in my NHL preview that ran in the Philly Inquirer back in Ocotber.
So graphs come back to haunt you. Hey, we all thought the two clubs that had the most salary cap space coming out of the lockout – Boston and Pittsburgh _ would be playoff locks this season … We were wrong. I was wrong.
Like many hockey fans out there, I didn’t think Peter Karmanos would do anything in the new CBA to improve his club. I felt Karmanos, who was one of the small-market, salary cap hawks, would simply pocket the pay check he’d get every spring from big-market clubs such as the Flyers, Toronto, Rangers, etc.
Understand something: they lost Jeff O’Neill and Sean Hill, they didn’t sign anyone of consequence, and their goaltending situation look “iffy.”
Well, we were wrong. I was wrong.
In the span of a little more than a weekend, the Flyers lost their No. 1 overall ranking in the NHL with a loss in regulation in Detroit, then an overtime loss in Colorado.
The Fly Boys went from No. 1 in the East, after falling from No. 1 overall, to No. 3 in the East as the Hurricanes side-stepped them to the top ranking.
Carolina as a No. 1 seed? Are you kidding me? The Canes are now No. 2 because of Ottawa’s most recent victory, but the idea here is that no one expected Carolina to even challenge for a playoff berth.
And if you think I was rough on the Canes, Luke Decock, the beat writer for the Raleigh News Observer, found this little ditty from a paper in the Western Conference:
There are some bad teams in the Eastern Conference, but Carolina promises to be the worst.
So what’s behind the Canes’ success? Well, Gerber has given them decent goaltending, for starters. He’s not overwhelming in net, but he’s better than we thought.
Mostly, however, it’s the Canes’ offense under Peter Laviolette. They have seven players with double-figure goal scoring.
Last week, Eric Staal had seven points in three games to become NHL Player of the Week. He leads the team with 59 points, ranking him among the top 10 in the NHL and his 29 goals are among the top five.
At the mid-point of the NHL season, the Flyers Simon Gagne and Carolina’s Staal had posted the biggest scoring increases over the 2003-04 season. That was on Jan. 11 when Gagne had 29 goals, a 21-goal increase, tops in the league. Staal was league’s top point getting with 54. That represented a 36-point increase over his totals in ’03-’04.
Of course, Staal alone, is not carrying this club. Erik Cole, who is one of the dynamic, young players for Team USA, has 39 points. And there’s a genuine battle going on among Cory Stillman, Justin Williams and Rod Brind’Amour for the second spot occupied by Stillman with 48 points.
It’s great that two of the guys involved here are former Flyers. And tonight at the Wachovia Center, the Flyers get a chance to knock off the Canes and grab back the No. 2 seed while tying Ottawa for the points lead in the East.

Cory- interesting blurbs from Pannacio's blog! It's funny how 'everyone' is now scrambling to say "who knew?" and attempt in vain, to 'take back' the words they all said before the season started. LOL.
Nice to get some acknowledgement, especially from the big market media types - especially in Philly, but we still have a long way to go to get the oh so elusive r-e-s-p-e-c-t that we all covet.
I think there will be a natural come-back-to-earth thing happening to Philly after that long 11 game road trip; they were back home on Sat. to play the Avs and had some emotional thing there because it was Forsberg v. his old team, but now, they've gotta get re-established at home, vs our guys. It's gonna be tough, but I see a win- It may be wild and crazy given what's at stake, but I see our boys doing it again. ;)

I'm feelin' a bit nervous about this one...down on D when we need them the most. We need the centers (Cullen, Staal, and KA) to step up big and help out the D men. (Figuring Rod does that as a given). Skate hard and strong boys! I'll be Tivoing because I have a game of my own...maybe that's why I'm nervous. This is a tough stretch of games...day off, game on...game home...game away...

From the gameday briefs in the N&O today:
The Flyers are 1-0-1 in their first two meetings against Carolina this season, both in Raleigh and most recently a 4-3 overtime win on Dec. 29.
Was I the only who saw us beat them 8-6 earlier this year? Let's make this clear ... we've taken three of four points from these guys.

From WRAL:
Hurricanes, Flyers Battle In Philly
The suddenly-slumping Philadelphia Flyers try to end their mini-funk tonight when they welcome the Carolina Hurricanes to the Wachovia Center for a battle of first-place clubs.
The Flyers have lost two straight and three of their last four games after a 9-1-1 stretch. On Saturday they dropped a 4-3 overtime tilt against the visiting Colorado Avalanche, as Alex Tanguay scored a power-play goal 4:14 into the extra session to lift the visitors.
The Flyers played their first home game after a franchise-record 11-game trip.
Peter Forsberg forced overtime with a goal with 1:12 remaining in the third and also had an assist in his first game against his former team. Linemate Mike Knuble finished with a goal and two assists for the Flyers.
Goaltender Antero Niittymaki finished with 30 saves.
The Flyers, with 63 points, are now third in the Eastern Conference standings -- two behind Ottawa and one back of Carolina. Philly is six points ahead of the second-place Rangers in the Atlantic Division race.
Philadelphia, which is 13-5-4 on home ice, will host Boston on Thursday to close a three-game homestand.
Carolina, meanwhile, has won its last seven games, including Sunday's 4-2 triumph over lowly St. Louis. Eric Staal netted the last three goals of the game to earn his second career hat trick.
Staal finished with four points and Ray Whitney also scored for the Hurricanes. Rookie goaltender Cam Ward made 31 saves in the win.
Both of Staal's career hat tricks have come this season as the star center also netted three goals against Philadelphia on October 28. Staal, who hadn't scored in his last eight games, now has 29 goals on the season.
Whitney extended his point streak to five games, having tallied three goals and three assists during the run.
Carolina, which is 10-6-3 on the road, will host the NY Islanders on Thursday.
The Canes and Flyers have split two meetings this season, with both games taking place in Raleigh.
However, Carolina is 0-7-2 (7 losses, 2 ties) in its last nine trips to the City of Brotherly Love -- last winning on October 7, 1999.

Chuck K. was on 850 in his usual game day slot- he announced officially no Commodore, BUT O's#1 will have something to cheer about from her Tuesday night living room= Andrew Ladd will play tonight on the 4th line intiially with Jesse & Kevyn...... Hip hip, hoorah!..... :D Apparently the Kid pulled the old "put me in coach I'm ready" speech. Love it. :D
On an aside, did any of my fellow XM satellite radio dwellers catch Jim Jackson- OLN's Play by Play man for our game vs DET- and the regular p-b-p dude for the Flyers? He went on in praise of our team for like 5 minutes- from Staal, to the style of player, to Gerbs and how fast we are, and how much fun it is to call the Canes v Flyers games this year- I was on my way home from picking up my dog from the vet, and nearly drove off Hwy 55 - cause once he got going, the guy from ch 204- Jim Tatti I think, starts chiming in. I know I'm the one who has supposedly had confidence in this bunch since the season started, but I was preaching to the choir so to speak. Now, media people are talking about little ol US? Then for the rest of the drive home after the interview- XM kept promoting the "Showdown between the EASTERN POWERHOUSES- Canes & Flyers- on XM Channel 204" Luckily, I was just about home, or my car surely woulda been in a ditch.

Good call on that no-goal. Maybe that was a little wake-up call for our boys.
Is anyone else getting some horrible background noise on the broadcast? It sounds like wind blowing through a pipe, or like the whole Wachovia Center is swarming with bees or something. It seems to get less loud when they play arena music and when they turn the on-ice sound down. It's literally hurting my ears!! Oh well, small sacrifice. ;)
Some nice hits by Ladd and Richmond, BTW. Guess they want some more minutes!!
Great freakin' save on Gagne by Gerber, too!!! Way to not slide back in the net, Gerbs!!!
Ewww....hope he didn't hurt himself.

Considering their goal is exactly the kind of goal we'd score, I don't feel too damn bad about this game.
Freaking awesome game so far, too ('cept for the score).
Hard to ***** too much about officiating when a) they've been called for more than us and b) this is, so far, the best officiated game we've seen in weeks but I do wish they were calling it a little tighter. We seem to be adjusting, though.

Good game? Freaking awesome game. It lived up to its recently annointed billing as one of the top games of the year in the league. Honestly, the only way that game could have been better was if I was there. Both teams brought their "A" game, well, what they could since they are both still the walking wounded. I think that's what made it all the more impressive. They were both missing some key guys but you never would know it the way they played. Unbelievable.

Best. Game. Ever. Did you guys see Ray joking with those fans along the glass before the shootout? Having a personality like that really seems to settle the team down in those situations. My next jersey will definately have a 13 on the back.

The boys battled it out and put on one of there 3rd period comebacks! :D The shootout was freaking awesome. Back and forth and Brindy to finish it up was soooooo sweet. I truely grew about 40 gray hairs because of this game! I love our team!!!!!!!!!!And that was funny when Whitney was joking with the fans. It looked like he pointed at the scoreboard after he got done messing with the Philly fan as to say wait and see what happens after I get done shooting! Sure enough he scored. I wonder if he went over and laughed at the guy after that? Anyways what a fun game & a great win! I'll be happy at work tomorrow for sure! :nanner:

Did you guys see Ray joking with those fans along the glass before the shootout? .... My next jersey will definately have a 13 on the back.
Yeah I think I need to get a 13 put on mine.
I just realized tonight that Ray totally owns that number, now. I've haven't thought about the previous owner of #13 in quite awhile.
He really is The Wizard!

Funny you mention that. SoCal and I were talking about the silly things that people seated near us say. One of the things that the guys behind us used to say waaaaaaay back at the beginning of the season was "Nice Job......BATES" whenever Whitney did anything. Then everyone would chuckle. I hadn't thought about that in SOOOO long until we were chatting.
(as an aside, I think it's hilarious that someone in her section calls Tverdovsky: Ivan!)

good game.
Hey... did you see the followup post :) Just a little bit of understated sarcasm on my part
It was one heck of a game. I thought they had our number this evening, but we pulled it out. Gerber stopping Gagne again and again was great to watch :)

CL's right- #13 is ALL Whitney- I forgot who had it before lol. And How classic was he when those dudes were messing with him on the glass- did you see the one guy making the 'choke' sign to him???  I knew all his 'dramatic shootout goals' in practice would pay off.......tee hee.
The OLN crew was posively gushing about the Canes. Nice run we're getting- I was just watchng Altitude network the Avs broadcast channel- and they were in intermission- and totally giving Rod props. After those 3 turnovers in a row, I thought he needed a little break in OT- but as any great Captain will do, he took the boys over the top. Totally amazing.
Ladd looked comfortable out there- like he hadn't been gone at all.
I'm more thrilled with this win than I was for the 8-6 tilt if that is at all possible. Our D-men are gutted, and our guys just battled. Really unbelieveable.

So, only Tverdovsky, Kaberle and Wallin saw the ice in the OT. I noticed he was playing Cullen on D at that point. Scared the hell outta me! (Not that he's not capable, just that I didn't want to see him screw up and be goated by anyone for the loss)
We only played 10 guys in the OT anyway. It's weird....wonder how he determines who plays. I guess I'm used to the old style Canes since I'm surprised to see Craig and Kevyn Adams not get any OT time. I guess we're actually really trying to score these days!!

On my way to Damons my car turned 200,000 miles old. :D
There weren't too many people there...but apparently over 500 people (so I was told) showed up to the Ale House for Cool Bars because one Aaron Ward showed up.

This was one of those games where I was ready to call it a day...say nice game, nice try, and settle for the end of our 7 game winning streak. It could have been very easy and understandable for the Canes to mail this one in, for so many reasons. But our guys, no way were they giving up. It's another game where they simply refused to lose. This team has so much heart. Poor Hedican, what can you say about his effort.
This season is like a dream. Hope I never wake up!

MAD props to the D - just finished watching the TIVO. Although the offensive attack really didn't seem to be there so much...the team was really playing well defensively. The centers stepped it up and helped out alot. Kaberle and Tever (I like that, too!) and WOW for Hedican as well as Wallin were just out of this world. I'm proud of the young guys as well. Ladd and LaROse - do NOT want to see EITHER of them go back to Lowell...Hedican is going to be SORE if not out after tonight...anyone hear if he broke a rib...'cause it looked like it (no sound since I was fast forwarding so much).

Wow, what a game! I have a little tradition this year of walking up to my husband and yelling "Canes win!" while throwing my arms in the air. This time I hobbled over and barely raised my hands while croaking "Canes win..."
I must admit, I lost a little faith in our boys when they went down by 2, being such a defensive game and back on our heels. I think I need penance now! Did we set a franchise record for turnovers in our own zone?!
I seem to remember an earlier game that mentioned we hadn't given up a 5 on 3 all year... is that still true?
LOVED the antics by Whitney, can't believe they didn't keep the camera on him longer once he scored!

Well, I was out watching the game here in LA at a bar - and converted half the bar into Canes fans. I can't say enough about this game, so I won't say anything at all. I don't know where to start. I have to admit, I was ready to chalk it up to "it's ok, they've won a ton lately, there has to be a night we don't pull if off" and thank GOD, the boys weren't of the same mindset. They didn't stop. They just never gave up.
This was some amazing hockey folks, and everyone who I met out was staring at the screen in open mouthed silence. In the off periods, I would hear from people that this was some "amazing hockey", and for So Cal natives, who dont' usually watch hockey to begin with - that was so nice to hear. People stopped watching basketball to watch this. People around me were patting me on the back and asking questions, like "who is that?" "what's their record", "who's that goalie?"..I answered all and needless to say we have a few more fans.
And that shootour was amazing. Though once we got to the SO, I finally thought they would pull it out cause we just have better skaters. I never expected our C to have to pull it off though, but what could be more fitting??
Amazing, giddy, delirious hockey folks.
I'm afraid I might wake up.

"Smeagol" still thinks so. He pretty much shows his a** and proves he knows nothing about us, though. The "weak" division argument is really only going to work so long. Particularly when you know we haven't played that many division games yet. And, we just beat a top team in the East with nearly half our D on the shelf!

Want to hear (well OK, read) something funny?
I got a wild hair during the lockout and recalculated the standings for 03-04, taking away the points that each team got from their own division.
This is what I came up with:
EAST:
Ottawa: 79 pts (1st) (record v. own division: 9-10-4-1)
Tampa: 77 pts (2nd) (record v. own division: 13-8-3-0)
New Jersey: 70 pts (3rd on three-way tiebreaker with PHI and NYI) (record v. own division: 14-7-2-1)
Boston: 73 pts (4th on tiebreaker with MTL) (record v. own division: 13-6-2-3)
Montreal: 73 (5th on tiebreaker with BOS) (record v. own division: 9-13-1-1)
Toronto: 75 pts (6th) (record v. own division: 13-9-2-0)
Philadelphia: 70 pts (7th on three-way tiebreaker with NJD and NYI) (record v. own division: 13-6-5-0)
NYIslanders: 70 pts (8th on three-way tiebreaker with PHI and NJD) (record v. own division: 8-11-3-2)
WEST:
Detroit: 77 pts (1st) (record v. own division: 15-7-1-1)
Vancouver: 74 (2nd) (record v. own division: 10-7-6-1)
Dallas: 72 pts. (3rd) (record v. own division: 9-8-6-1)
San Jose: 71 pts (4th on tiebreaker with COL) (record v. own division: 15-6-3-0)
Colorado: 71 pts (5th on tiebreaker with SJS) (record v. own division: 12-7-4-1)
Edmonton: 70 (6th) (record v. own division: 7-12-3-2) These guys missed the playoffs)
Calgary: 66 (7th) (record v. own division: 11-7-4-2)
Nashville: 65 (8th) (record v. own division: 11-9-2-2)
St. Louis: 64 (miss playoffs) (record v. own division: 12-9-2-1)
As you can see, the Lightning came in second in the East--by a whopping TWO points, behind Ottawa.
Ten of the Lightning's 13 wins that season came against Washington and us, while Florida and Atlanta gave them absolute FITS.
Weak division? What? People like Smeagoombah need to take a look at the Central before they open their yaps--that division has three of the worst teams in the League this season (St. Loo, C-bus, and Chicago), and yet nobody says anything about it because of those damnable Detoilet Menses Munchers.

In addition...since when did Maple Leaf fans become Hurricanes fans?

Weren't these the same people saying we were overated and would break down as the season went on?
"Smeagol" still thinks so. He pretty much shows his a** and proves he knows nothing about us, though. The "weak" division argument is really only going to work so long. Particularly when you know we haven't played that many division games yet. And, we just beat a top team in the East with nearly half our D on the shelf!

Great win (again? ... !!!) by the boys. What a system Lavi's put in ... we're down two of our top d-men and manage to really put out a great defensive effort. Blocked shots? We got plenty, even without Aaron Ward. Playing this way when down guys is the best thing that can happen, b/c it proves to the team that no one is bigger than the team. Heart ... all heart.

I thought Hedican played at least 1 shift in OT, but maybe that was late in the game.

Nope. If you look at the shift chart, he wasn't used in the "4th" at all.

Just read Sundheim's blog about what a bumpy ride the team had on the plane last night. :eek2: I guess they are so happy to be back, we don't have to worry about them still being on cloud nine (pardon the pun).

Anyone think Forsberg's on the wrong team? Toronto's missing a whiner...
