I love to start the game threads when I'm all pumped up from a win!

This is our final match-up with the Islanders. Let's make the series 3-1 this year, boys!

We only need 4 more wins to tie our win record from 2001-02, folks! And we STILL have 37 games to play!! (won't say the P-word... won't say the P-word.... )

So -- let's fill up the RBC and remind everyone who's got the loudest house in the NHL!!!!!! :nanner:

Puck drops at 7:00PM

LET'S GO 'CANES!!

The Isles have played better (for the most part) with Stirling gone. DiPietro played well last night, so it'll be important to get to him early before he settles into a groove. It'll be key to take advantage of their younger d-men and exploit them ... this is a team that can put up goals if you give them the chance.

Go get 'em boys!

Looking forward to some physical play (punching in the face) tomorrow night the first time we face Godard again. Yes, I hold grudges and am looking forward to Boulerice being in the lineup for once (even though he is a terrible hockey player). We should call up Peat as well for this game. We only really play three lines anyway.

P.S. this is my first posting on here, so hello to everyone and look forward to getting to know as many of you as I can.

GO CANES!!!!

He's certainly not a terrible hockey player (he makes half a million doing it), I just think he's on a team that's very good. He'd play more on a lot of other teams.

Welcome to the boards.

We may raze Jesse a bit because of his skating ability versus the rest of the team, but we pretty much defend every guy on the team right now - they've sold us on the team concept and I must say - we all buy it!! That said- I would like to see Jesse be sure there are no cheap shots taken without some consequences!

I am a part of the team concept and I support Jesse all the time as a physical presence on the team. I think he does play a valuable role. However, from a strictly hockey playing ability (skating, stick work, head for the game, understanding the system etc) the guy is lost out there. Every time he is out there we look terrible and the other team has multiple scoring opportunities. The last home game he was attempting a change and ran over the puck carrier....who was on our team! I just dont think his head is in the game and hasnt been all season. He was a far more impressive player two years ago. Taking last year off was an enormous lapse in judgement.

But thank you for welcoming me to the boards. Looking forward to many good conversations with everyone about a great sport and team.

The last home game he was attempting a change and ran over the puck carrier....who was on our team!

As I recall, a defender fell in front of him and he tried to avoid him, and ran into our guy (and it was all near the benches during a line change).

Jesse's not awful ... he's just not all that good. And on a team where scoring is coming from everywhere, there's not much ice time for someone who doesn't often put the puck in the net (Zigomanis learned this, as has Nordgren, tho I personally think his scoring will come ... and LaRose will soon learn this when he's sent down/scratched/getting two minutes a night). Even Kevyn Adams (until recently) only got the odd shift even strength.

Welcome to the boards Moose, I'm relatively new mahself. :-)

Here's my rant: Jesse isn't the best skater in the world, but there are a couple of reasons I still think he's important. First off, team chemistry. Yes, even in the new hockey you need an "enforcer" on the team, just so the other team knows they exist. A We-may-not-shove-you-around -tonight, but-we-will-make-sure-you-know-who's-your-daddy-next-matchup - sort of thing.

And we also don't want overwhelming, dominant presence on this team by that enforcer. I wouldn't want our tough guy to be a huge personality that disrupted the team, or the flow of a game either. Jesse doesn't make waves about not skating. He's not out there publicly begging for ice time. For the most part, from what I can see - he's just a really positive guy willing to do his thing when we need him. And for the sake of that precious thing called Team Chemistry - I'm glad he's our guy. There are a lot of other "enforcers" out there who would change the makeup of our team and I'd hate to see that (end rant  )

That being said. Please dress Jesse next game!!

I for one am keeping my fingers crossed for a Godard vs. Boulerice fight. Lets not forget Erskine could also be playing. Although Godard may be out of Jesses league. Scott Parker, is about the biggest name on Boulerice's list, while Godard has fought and done well against the top shelf guys.

It said in the paper that he suffered a left shoulder sprain. I don't know if anyone noted that in any of the other threads or not. Not sure if that means he will miss time or not??

On tv he wasn't holding his shoulder, he was holding the ribs. that's why I speculated on that really being the injury and not the shoulder. (You know Hockey players break ribs all the time, but it's never mentioned in the media. maybe they don't want other players to know so they dont stick their sticks into their sides purposefully.) However the hit did look nasty on his shoulder too.

Propaganda!

Going from dressing 7 defensemen to dressing 5 defensemen would be a blow...especially with arguably our 3 best defensemen out of the game. Factor in Danny Richmond only playing 5 minutes a night, and look what you have...Though it'll be great if Commodore can come back. I have hope that both Commodore and Hedican will be healthy enough to play.

Ah, I should probably post this in practice reports, but since I'm late- I'll give a short synopsis-- the team practice was from 12 to 2- guys were on the ice about an hour- basically a light skate- not much in the way of drills- just getting loose and skating about.... to answer some of the ???'s on guys- Commodore was out there- he looked ok, didn't look to be in pain, but then, he's a hockey player- he's tough. No Hedican and No Frank Kaberle, I heard Chuck K on 620 this morning reiterating that Hedican was going to be looked at for the shoulder- so, my guess is that is probably where he was- Mr. Whitney and his silly self was out there, and that was kind of odd, considering the on -off way he has been about practices and skates.

The Islanders apparently came straight here from CHI after they won last night- nccanes and I spotted DiPietro and Dubliewicz down in the tunnel watching the guys skate.

Not much to report other than Chad LaRose is like the unofficial team mascot- and the entire team really loves him.

I think you're right.
I'm all for breaking in slowly, but he's been pretty solid in the NHL so far. He even had a few big hits to go along with the assist. I think he's ready for more than +/- 5 minutes of ice time.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?page=playerpoll060117

The Hockey News asked 65 NHL netminders: "Who's the best goalie in the NHL this season?"
Out of the 61 total votes, Dominik Hasek had a slight lead:

Hasek -- 17 players (27.9 percent)
Miikka Kiprusoff -- 16 (26.2 percent)
Marty Turco -- six (9.8 percent)
Tomas Vokoun -- five (8.2 percent)
Roberto Luongo, Henrik Lundqvist -- four
Manny Fernandez, Martin Gerber -- two
Ed Belfour -- one
Three goalies chose not to respond. One more named more than one netminder. Here are the results from each team. Goalies were not allowed to name themselves or their teammate. Some players asked to remain anonymous.

Guess who one of the ones who voted for Gerber Was..

"Martin Gerber" -- Wade Dubielewicz

p.s and the other.. Martin Gerber" -- John Grahame

Guess that shutout impress him :)

Out of the 61 total votes, Dominik Hasek had a slight lead:

Hasek -- 17 players (27.9 percent)
Miikka Kiprusoff -- 16 (26.2 percent)
Marty Turco -- six (9.8 percent)
Tomas Vokoun -- five (8.2 percent)
Roberto Luongo, Henrik Lundqvist -- four
Manny Fernandez, Martin Gerber -- two
Ed Belfour -- one
Three goalies chose not to respond. One more named more than one netminder. Here are the results from each team. Goalies were not allowed to name themselves or their teammate. Some players asked to remain anonymous.

Guess who one of the ones who voted for Gerber Was..

"Martin Gerber" -- Wade Dubielewicz

p.s and the other.. Martin Gerber" -- John Grahame

Guess that shutout impress him :)

To be fair, those could be any combination of Aebby, Budaj, and Kolesnik.

The Canes are counting on either Mike Commodore or Bret Hedican to give them a full six defensemen tonight. Commodore (right leg contusion) has missed two games but practiced Monday. Hedican sprained his left shoulder late in Tuesday's 4-3 shootout win at Philadelphia. "There's a better chance it's Commodore, but I wouldn't count Hedican out," Carolina coach Peter Laviolette said. "He's gutted it out quite a few times for this team this year."

We're about as banged up on D as you can get, going into this game. This may be the one we drop. After the week we've had, as long as they play hard, I'll be able to live with that. I thought I was getting that one Tuesday night.

You never know, though. Seeing our name at the top of the standings like that seems to have been pretty good motivation!! This team certainly continues to amaze me!

Speaking of the D, I think it's amusing that you hear all the analysts discussing how we need to improve our defense. I was thinking it Tuesday night and Espo said it on XM with Chuck yesterday, we have Glen Wesley and Aaron Ward, arguable the top 2 this season, out, then Commodore goes down. Hedy, also been awesome, breaks his nose and then gets a shoulder injury/cracked ribs Tuesday night and misses the end of the game. And WE'RE STILL WINNING. So, what's this about us not being deep at D? It's been awesome how Kaberle, Tverdovsky, etc have really elevated their game in the last couple. Let's hope they can do it again! And all hail Gerber. It just has to be said.

FYI, Chuck said Wes was still not skating, still a week or more from being back.

OK, think I'm done rambling this morning! ;)

DiPietro has played well coming back from injury & the team has responded positively to the coaching change, so you could be right about dropping this one. I agree, I had pretty much accepted Tuesday night was that game.

No clue about ticket sales, but here's a callout to the fans from Commodore.

Whoever is between the pipes for New York Thursday night will face a dangerous Hurricanes offense and a hostile RBC Center crowd.

"The crowd can have a huge impact on a game," Commodore said. "When you have a loud, full building, it's hard for a visiting team to come in and play - not only because the home team is revved up and ready to go, but because the fans are into it as well.

"It can be a huge pick-me-up, especially with the way the schedule is now where we are playing every other day," he said. "That little extra noise or jump from the crowd can make a world of difference."

Stillman sits out game against Islanders with 'torso' injury

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Carolina Hurricanes left wing Cory Stillman sat out Thursday night's game against the New York Islanders with a "torso" injury.

It was the second game he has missed this season. Stillman is Carolina's second-leading scorer with 48 points and recently had a point in 11 straight games, the longest streak of his 11-year NHL career.

9 in a row, my friends!

Second time this season that has happened! Another win, but a lackluster effort is the impression Chuck K gave during the online broadcast. 4 shots in the first? Sure, they lead to 2 goals, but 4 shots? I hope this is only a one game "funk". I'll have to wait to see some highlights, but #12's 30th and Ladd's 5th are definitely good things to see.

piss poor game from an effort perspective and attendance...it is a joke that this team cant draw better than 12k when they are leading the league...I agree that this team needs to be marketed better...commercials in prime time, push more guests on the local shows/news, etc. But for the comment on lowering ticket prices people really need to shut up. The sad fact is you go to any arena in the league and I challenge those folks to find a ticket in the range of the upper deck tickets at the RBC Center...easy answer, they wont, but at a small percentage of the arenas. Bottom line on attendance, this teams makes the postseason, interest will get up, attendance will be up and that should carry over...this area if nothing else is as bandwagon as it gets...

Back to the game, Cam Ward was a highlight, but I felt bad. I saw Gerbers fan club in the Eye before the game...shame they traveled from Europe and didnt get to see him play...hopefully they will travel up I95 with me to see the caps game...

Good to see this team win games that honestly they really didnt deserve...but a wins a win

WOOHOO!! :D

As for attendance: I was disapointed as well...of course it is a weeknight, they were playing the Islanders, and another small factor may be that it's exam week for highschoolers..still, the best team in the league should be drawing more than 12k. Maybe they should put a rewards system into place...give ticket buyers a card and punch it everytime they buy more, once they hit a certain mark--give them a ticket for free or something. At least that'll get people to continue to come back. Oh well---it's only one game....and at least they got yet another win!

My observations... The Tinu fan club was in da house and didn't even see him play.

How awesome was it to see Gerbs wearing a "John Deere" hat though? I bet he has a garbage bag full of them now.

Funniest cheer... from around the 324's, "We Got Peter! Clap Clap Clapclapclap." I think the Islanders announcers noted that chant.

Had to come here to find out where the phantom stillman went.

We were out shot and out hustled, but not out scored, and we dug the puck out of the corners better than any other game I've seen IMO. That digging is what won us the game.

Poor Jesse: Gets his face plowed, then watches Danny Richmond drop 'em.

Didn't anyone realize Goddard was on this team?

The Isles will be a team to contend with the second half of the season with their new coach. I'm glad all our games with them are now out of the way. Martinek will soon be on my fantasy team if he keeps up his skill. Did you see him weave the puck around four of our canes?

Oh, and Ric Flair version 3.0 will take some getting used to. It may be the lens but he looks fatter.

I heard a couple of boos for Goddard, but I expected a bit more. It seemed like people didn't know what had happened with him. As for Ric Flair, definitely gonna take some getting used to....he's aged a bit and does look a little heavier.

I'd still like to know what was going on with that goal the ref waived off just before the end of the second period. Goalie Interference? From where we were stitting it didn't look like there was anybody within three feet of the goalie. Did somebody interfere telepathically or something? Sure we got a nice "REF YOU SUCK!" chant going, and it fired up the Canes enough to score another goal a few seconds later, but I'd hate to think that the officiating has gotten so bad that the refs are calling penalties on their own halucinations.

Well... he IS getting older, you know..... The rhthym just seemed off, on that new video-- slower, I think.

Cam was the man, for sure tonight -- kept 'em in the game. We might have been out-shout-- but Cam was right there to make a huge contribution. How lucky are we to have TWO great goalies?

Question for folks at home-- why was our goal waived off in the 2nd period? From where we sit, we couldn't figure it out.

Did anyone hear me on the Buzz? I was tired of all the *****in' and moanin' about attendance, and was trying to change the subject. I wanted to get some talk going about the game!

Espn.com says it was Adams who caused the goaltender inference:
Of course, a call from the officials also cost Carolina a goal. Ray Whitney appeared to make it 3-2 late in the second period, but Adams came through the crease and bumped goaltender Rick DiPietro. No penalty was called as the goal wasn't allowed, and Adams was on the ice 20 seconds later to deflect in a blast from Mike Commodore.

A win is a win, especially when Ottawa and Philly both lost.

I let Commodore down at this game. I was tired and had no energy at all so I didn't do my part to motivate the team. Glad they could pull it off without me this once  ;)

Richmond makes me nervous and I don't want to see him play anymore minutes than absolutely necessary. I don't want to think about him on the ice the same time as Ovechkin on Saturday and we so badly need Hedican back. Hope he and Stillman are quick healers. Looking for #10 against the Caps. Sounds like a good idea to get it done in the nation's capital!!

Hard fought game... especially in the 3rd. I watched this one from home and if the rule on scoring a goal is that ANY part of the puck crosses the line, we dodged a bullet on the Blake goal that was waved off. Every angle they showed it trickled over before Cam gloved it. :eek2:

Jesse is miserable. When he was in the box with Craig, Craig tried to talk to him and he wouldn't even look at him.

that was a piss poor crowd (what the hell do these guys have to do to get a crowd in there.... they're #1 in the NHL and have won 21 of the 26 home games they've played!!), and a really piss poor effort from our boys for most of the game. We looked absolutely looked dead on our skates for a good portion of the game. I'm wondering if that physical toll from the Philly game left them with a hangover. I didn't comment on it at the time.... but I'm a little concerned that over a 7 game series, we might not be able to stand up to the physical beating we took in that game. I know we were down a bunch of our players... but that's the best I can come up with for an explanation.

I actually went up and talked to some of the members of the Tinu's fan club. I had a hard time communicating with some of them because they understandably didn't really speak English all that well, and I don't speak Swiss... had they spoken French, I might have been able to keep up. Oh well. One of their group did speak a bit of English and I had him translate for me. Their tour guide has them absolutely booked the whole time they are here (my translator said "the only time we're free is at the games!"). They are here in the US until next Tuesday, the 24th. They are traveling to the Washington game and then will be back for the Montreal game. I tried to explain to them that they could go out after the game and wait for the players to leave and hopefully get a few autographs and photos with Gerber. I don't know if they actually went or not. I also wanted to make sure that they knew about practices, etc. so that they could have the opportunity to meet him and get photo ops, etc....

It was great that Gerbs was wearing the John Deere hat... I got a kick out of that one...

It's my understanding that the ENTIRE puck has to cross the goal line. It was a good call:

Rule 57.a
A goal shall be scored when the puck shall have been put between the goal posts by the stick of a player of the attacking side, from in front and below the crossbar, and entirely across a red line the width of the diameter of the goal posts drawn on the ice from one goal post to the other with the goal frame in its proper position.

I actually went up and talked to some of the members of the Tinu's fan club. I had a hard time communicating with some of them because they understandably didn't really speak English all that well, and I don't speak Swiss.

yes, we did dodge a bullet with that non goal. It was clearly IN from my vantage point in 123. I was on the phone with a friend when it happened and i of course said "crap" . Since time warner has a delay, it took a few seconds for her to say "crap" also.
I thought the first two periods were lackluster. The third was better. Actual attendance was probably more like 10,000. The crowd seemed a little lackluster also.
I was listening to two ladies talk on the way out of the parking lot and one was apologizing to the other for the game being so boring! They told me that is was the one lady's first game.

From where I was sitting... I had a good view.. TO me It seemed like Kevin hit him after the goal went in, and partly because DiPietro oved out to try and stop the puck.. oh well, KAdams got it back later!

It was hard to tell, but it looked like he got him after the puck was already in. He definitely did bump him, tho.

I actually went up and talked to some of the members of the Tinu's fan club. I had a hard time communicating with some of them because they understandably didn't really speak English all that well, and I don't speak Swiss.

Um... dude -- there's no such a language as "Swiss." They speak German and/or French. Sorry.. couldn't let slide by.

It's nice that you talked to them, though!

Yeah yeah... I know.... I just couldn't remember what language they spoke in Switzerland. I knew there was a good percentage of folks that spoke French, but I couldn't remember what the predominant language was... I figured someone would correct me though and point out my idiot statement... thanks!! :)

I was hoping at least one or two of them spoke French if none of them spoke English all that well. I figured I could at least carry on a conversation in French and help answer questions that way..... of course, after being here in NC for 8 years, my french is fading quickly... speaking with francophone friends at home is difficult now. The adage of "if you don't use it you lose it" is very appropriate in my case...

Can we all remember that the Canes had over 18k for the last 3 games and let the attendance crap go? (Yes I heard you CL and was thankful for it :) ).

This team sucked and sucked bad for 2 years. They didn't snap their fingers and get better, it took a new coach and some new personnel and a year off with various players going elsewhere to hone their games. The fans ain't gonna instantaneously show up in droves for a Thurs night game against that hapless Isles who we've now seen 3 times in 2 weeks. Yes, we need more plan holders. And in other news, the sun will come up tomorrow.

Shame on the Buzz for giving some much freakin airtime to the subject (replete with all the marketing gurus 2 cents) after a 9th in a row win and a #1 team in the league. They MUST put every call on the air, because surely they'd actually screen them to get a variety (how long did you hold CL?) if there was one.

And the funniest part, the dude who said he goes to "about 10 games a year" talking about how embarrassing it is. Well bud, go to a few more games if you're so embarrassed.

They survived and they did it banged and bruised and missing key personnel. I can deal with that. Who would have predicted 2 or 3 weeks ago, that we could kill 2 5on3s w/o Wesley AND Ward?

Bad night for Jesse. Pasted into the glass, Richmond showing the fighting spark, and a bad hooking penalty - that he had the nerve to complain about. THAT is exactly what the new rules are supposed to stop, a skilled player being allowed to move the puck w/o a slow, less skilled guy hooking them until he or a teammate can catch him.

On to Washington!

We dodged a bullet for sure- not the best effort- they seemed to be skating in quicksand at points- it was so odd, that nccanes and I kept talking about "how wierd" this game feels- and Aaryn, Chuck wasn't lying or stretching the truth lol- we really did have only 4 shots & 2 goals after 1 period  .

Danny Richmond doesn't scare me- I thought he played fine- and he's got guts. He's still a rookie, obviously has alot to learn but he's not scary. I thought there were several brilliant moves with his stick to get the puck out of our end during a series of barrages that the Canes didn't have any energy on.

Cam looked really sharp too. He seems to have alot of confidence.

I miss Aaron, Bret and Wesley- but I thought Frank Kaberle played a particularly solid game- He seemed to be in the right place alot- especially when the Isles were shooting from it seemed like everywhere.

The 'new' lines were interesting- I think the Whitney/Staal/Cole troika could do some things - but they'd need more time to gel. I liked what I saw in Ladd, he likes to hit.

We had some dudes calling out Goddard in 304- but not much.

Nic Nordgren played 1 shift/44 seconds. wow. And Jesse, sadly will not make it through the end of the year- he'll be in Lowell, or just gone. His penalty was just BRUTAL. I was wondering if he just trying to turn that dude into a human corkscrew and just when was he gonna take his hands off the stick, his body, and so on. I've been a Jesse honk for awhile, but it's just not working and the more he tries , the worse it gets.

I was interested in seeing the Ric Flair thing but man, that was brutal as well. I think we should stick with "Classic" Flair. Nature Boy, spray on tan twirling Flair is not so good.

Highlights of the night- Matt Cullen smiling with glee when he score that goal- and jumping out of my seat knowing #12 was gonna smoke DiPietro- that breakaway looks just like the one he scored when we lost in OT to them early in the year. 30 goals by Jan 19. WOOO! Our Captain rocks. So steady, so solid. Amazing.....

They keep saying 'they find ways to win' tonight, that poor an effort yielded a win, so can't complain.

Quiet stat of the night. Someone other than a goalie had more ice time than Brind'amour for the Canes, Kaberle. It was only 4 seconds more but that's not what's amazing. I hardly noticed the guy out there AND he blocked 7 shots AND was a plus 1.

OK, I've stuck with my plan not to go anywhere near the Aftermath broadcasts- so E & CL you gals need to clue me in on what I missed while I was listening to the Blues & WSH go to shootout and then the Sens tied the Ducks late in the 3rd and then lost in OT- on XM- after the last rant I heard on Aftermath, I vowed and stuck to not listening to it. Drew Smith does nothing to dispute what people call in and rant about- espcially when they're wrong. He usually says "well yeah, I can see your point" Horrible!

So what I'm sayin' is a need a recap! LOL.

And then I heard the live broadcast over the phone (about 3 seconds ahead of the broadcast) while I waited. I waited probably 15 minutes, I'd say. I heard probably 3 callers and the entire Staal interview thru my phone before they got to me. It actually kind of startled me when I heard my name!!

according to TSN:

Ray Whitney appeared to make it 3-2 late in the second period, but Adams came through the crease and bumped goaltender Rick DiPietro. No penalty was called as the goal wasn't allowed, and Adams was on the ice 20 seconds later to deflect in a blast from Mike Commodore.

What really pissed me off about that one is that they didn't even do a video review of it.

Aw, c'mon. That would require the JumboTron people to have some kind of a clue.

IMO, when the team has won the games they have won over the past week, when the team just won 9 on a row AGAIN, when they are #1 in the league and when they come home to a crowd of not even 12,000, it can be said that this market is pathetic. They don't deserve for these 20 some guys to be laying their hearts out on the ice every damn night.  I'm sorry attendance is the story of the game, but it is. I'm embarassed and would love to be able to offer a personal apology to every single one of the players. They've worked damn hard. They deserve better than this, IMO.

And the guy who called the Aftermath and said we were 13th in the league in attendance.....where's he getting that info? ESPN.com is the only place I know of to look at attendance rankings and, through 37 games, they have us at 24th. And that's at home. We're 16th on the road (22 overall)....which means we draw better on the road than at home, huh?

Not a pretty game but, IMO, the Isles had more than a little to do with that. I didn't see a lack of effort. But then, I'm ungodly sleep-deprived AND I had resigned myself to losing this one so maybe that effected my perception.

Thanks to the guys in orange and blue for stopping playing after they thought Brindy scored the goal on the goal Ladd ended up getting. :D

Anyway, another 9 game win streak. I don't really see what anyone could have to complain about from the team's end. The team should be complaining about the lack of support, IMO.

Whatever they didn't do for the playoffs in 01-02 that caused people waiting in line not to get tickets, I hope they do it again. I'll hate seeing the blocks of enemy fans but on the other hand, maybe watching the games from their whatever-day-night-living-rooms will help remind people of the benefits of actually supporting the team.

Unfortunately, I agree. I think the Isles took it to us for a few periods and we were finally able to break through, but the lack of crowd was a story tonight. I know we had a lot of folks in the house the past few games, but that was more the exception than the rule. The Detroit game is always full, the Nashville game was the one good turnout, but it was Friday night. The STL game had a lot of comped tickets for the military folks... I know it's the Islanders and they were just in town... but what's it going to be like for turnout when we play Washington 3 times at home within a week and a half in late March/early April??

I actually went up and talked to some of the members of the Tinu's fan club. I had a hard time communicating with some of them because they understandably didn't really speak English all that well, and I don't speak German... had they spoken French, I might have been able to keep up.

Fixed 'at for j00. :smoke:

Thank CL - just curious. I was really tempted to call myself just to hear something different.

SoCal, it was basically people complaining about tonight's attendance. There might have a been a few calls at the beginning about the game (that weren't horrible) and then about 3 in a row *****ing about attendance. Drew Smith did exactly what you describe to each caller saying he saw their point and then asking for their suggestions. An apartment developer discussed how he could get higher occupancy by lower rent. Another guy ragged on the high prices and talked about how the Hornets used to have $8 seats. [insert banging head on wall smiley] Beer prices came up, no advertising came up, etc. He gave 1 caller so much latitude, I nearly called up to remind the screener that there had actually been a GAME tonight and to hang up on the mofo. Somewhere in there, CL called and said "I'm tired of hearing about attendance, I want to talk about something postive. How about Cam Ward? Aren't we fortunate to have such a great tandem of goalies", etc. She had the best call and the best vocabulary of the night! :D Drew called her a "glass half full person". Another caller told him that the Canes rely on opposing teams fans to fill the arena and since the Islanders don't have that many, that's why the attendance was low [insert another banging head smiley]. The final caller (after the big marketing lesson) also basically said "we only hurt ourselves being so fixated on this". It was a good call, even if he said that we were 13th in avg attendance. Of course, Smith isn't clued in enough to no that's not true.

BTW, I left Greenville at about 5:30pm today, picked up Mr SHC at that shopping center on the corner of Edwards Mill and Blue Ridge and, despite sh*tty RBCC parking procedures, was in my seat at the RBC, hotdog and soda in hand, before the teams skated out. Think I sped much?

Drew Smith is the biggest tool on the planet. He can claim he grew up watching hockey all he wants but I'd put big money on it that he'd never watched a full game before 5 years ago, if then. And diarrhea of the mouth, much? Geez, dude, shut the hell up and let the caller talk!!! And he JUST discovered hockeyfights.com? He talks so much about loving the fights and we need to dress Jesse blah, blah, blah. Then tonight, he went on and on about how great Tuesday's game was. I wanted to call and tell him I was surprised he could enjoy it when there wasn't a fight. He's a moron.

And when was the last freakin' time you saw a goal disallowed for "incidental contact" for cheese sakes. I hate refs.

Hard fought game... especially in the 3rd. I watched this one from home and if the rule on scoring a goal is that ANY part of the puck crosses the line, we dodged a bullet on the Blake goal that was waved off. Every angle they showed it trickled over before Cam gloved it. :eek2:
I think that the whole puck has to be over the line. John & Tripp were going on about "white space," as in you have to be able to see white between the puck & the line for it to be a goal. Scary scary saves, but our boy got it done!

Sucks for the Gerber fan club - I wonder if they managed to get their instruments into the Vault?

Edited to note that perhaps I should read the rest of the posts before shooting off a redundant one.

I think attendance is a "topic", but not a post-game dominant topic on a night like this. Get Matt West (or whoever) on this week and discuss the latest trends in ticket buying, plan sales, whatever.

It's an insult to the people who were at the game to spend the most amount of time on those that weren't. Honestly, it's not the least bit productive imo. It's a stat just like lots of others. Focus one of the other bazillion 850/620 shows on it and actually get people who are informed to discuss it.

Anyway, it's the first aftermath I've listened to in awhile (while flipping back and forth to the Ott/Ana game) - maybe I'll go back to not listening.

according to TSN:

Ray Whitney appeared to make it 3-2 late in the second period, but Adams came through the crease and bumped goaltender Rick DiPietro. No penalty was called as the goal wasn't allowed, and Adams was on the ice 20 seconds later to deflect in a blast from Mike Commodore.

What really pissed me off about that one is that they didn't even do a video review of it.

You can't review that.

As for the puck on Cam's line, there was no chance in hell that it crossed the line. At least half of the puck was still on the entire line when he covered it. The big deal, however, is the fact that he stopped the initial shot on the line with the heel of his stick. That's some Roy-like stuff, folks.

Sports call-in shows aren't about what's positive anyway. They don't even get callers when there is nothing to ***** about. The Aftermath is always going to address the negatives. Otherwise, it's 45 minutes of "aren't we great" which might be nice, but might also get annoying. It certainly won't be intelligent as long as Drew Smith is hosting. But the way all the 850 guys talk about it, it's the short straw that has to host it anyway.

However, I wanted to see the game more, so I didn't.

to focus on the positives:

Brindy is the freakin' man.... he was our best overall player this evening and deceptively is having a heck of an offensive numbers season for him.

Cam did play a good game for us. that non goal was him actually getting the blocker on it and was a heck of a stop.... he does seem very calm in there and did a great job in some traffic this evening. He still seems to be a bit out of position at times compared to Gerbs and he does seem to leave a gap between himself and the posts at times. But he stays more upright than Gerbs at times and nothing seems to rattle him. His confidence really seems to be coming back to the start of season levels....

Isn't it great that you almost *expect* Staal to score on those breakaways? How great a feeling is it when you have so much confidence in your guy that it would seem wrong if he missed? That year in the minors did so much for Staal. He's really coming of age for us...

Our Dmen have really stepped up for us this year when called upon. Who would have thunk it at the start of the year? I honestly had concerns about our D in that it was going to be a weak point for us. But we have found a way to get it done and the goalies have bailed us out when necessary. Killing those 2 5-on-3s tonight was huge for us.

That I'll agree on. He's really bad. I don't think I've heard 1 of his pre shows where he doesn't talk about how he's followed or covered hockey for so many years and then 5 seconds later proves he no longer follows hockey. He might follow the hurricanes (and that's being generous), but he doesn't follow hockey.

That aside, he's just poor.
