HEDICAN NAMED TO TEAM USA

Defenceman Bret Hedican of the Carolina Hurricanes will replace Aaron Miller of the Los Angeles Kings on the United States men's Olympic hockey team, a source has told The Canadian Press.

Miller has been bothered by a bad back most of the season. The announcement from USA Hockey should come as early as Monday at which time the Americans are also expected to announce their taxi squad.

Forward Matt Cullen of the Hurricanes, defenceman Paul Martin of the New Jersey Devils and goalie Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres are expected to be named to the reserve squad. But Miller probably won't join the team in Turin given that there are already three goalies on the team. Miller will await a call from the Americans if there's an injury. Miller could still yet find his way on the 23-man roster if goalie Robert Esche of the Philadelphia Flyers decides to pull out in order to avoid damaging a groin injury that he has just recovered from. But at this point he remains on the U.S. team.

Cullen is nearing a near miracle recovery from a broken jaw that originally was supposed to keep him out of action four to six weeks but he avoided surgery and is slated to play Thursday at Tampa. Both Cullen and Hedican play for U.S. head coach Peter Laviolette in Carolina.

In other Olympic news, Petteri Nummelin of Switzerland HC Lugano replaced fellow blue-liner Ossi Vaananen of the Colorado Avalanche on Finland's team Saturday. Vaananen suffered a broken foot in Thursday's loss to Nashville. He had surgery Friday and is out for the season.

It's just the latest loss for Finnish club decimated by injuries and withdrawals, starting with the controversial decision by star netminder Miikka Kiprusoff of the Calgary Flames to pull out in order to rest a nagging hip problem. No. 2 goalie Kari Lehtonen of the Atlanta Thrashers also withdrew so he could rest his groin. Both goalies continue to play every night for their respective NHL clubs.

Forwards Tuomo Ruutu of the Chicago Blackhawks and Sami Kapanen of the Flyers also withdrew due to injury.

Yay Hedican and Cullen!! Now, we just need a forward to get hurt (not Cole) so Matt can play!!

I really hope Ryan Miller gets to play, too.

I'd way rather Cullen not play than risk reinjuring himself. The rest of them too. I love watching the Olympics, but I've come to enjoy the less "professional" sports more than the rest of them. Feel the same way about the summer Olympics. I would much rather see the Canes rest and heal and be ready for the stretch run rather than risk injury in the round robin marathon and then medal play. A gold medal is great, but I no longer see the Olympics as what they were intended to be so I guess it's lost some of it's importance for me, no matter the sport.

I know those chosen are thrilled and I'm happy for them.

Note to the Swiss: don't send Gerber back to us with any injuries or that "we're neutral" stuff won't save you ;)

Note to the Swiss: don't send Gerber back to us with any injuries or that "we're neutral" stuff won't save you ;)

I really hope Ryan Miller gets to play, too.

Don't get me started on this! If there was any justice in the world, they'd bump Ty Conklin, add Ryan Miller, and name him the starter. Why Conklin got the nod with the year he's having is just beyond me.

You know - talkingcanes, I kinda feel the same way - I liked the nonpro kids getting the chance...I don't like the thought of splitting the season, breaking the stride and risking the injuries at this point in the season when we ought to be gearing up at a runfor the post season...but I'm happy that they've been chosen - speaks volumes of their play and growing respect for our team.

Which totally throws off our ladies thread Cullen tribute. :-/ Ah well, I guess his jaw is more important.

I'm thinking maybe the break wasn't as bad as they'd first thought? He was originally supposed to have surgery and he avoided that. I wonder if the surgery is generally to avoid wiring the jaw shut? But maybe you heal more quickly with the wires....it's just awful to have your mouth wired shut. Maybe he agreed to wires to not be out so long? Anyone know how this jaw thing works?

Hard to believe he'll be ready to go Thursday. I mean, sure, he can skate. You just hope no one hits him. :eek2:

Even more reason to watch the Olympics now, not that I would have missed much anyway. Glad to see Bret on the team.

However, if I were one of the players I'd be upset about missing the opening ceremonies. I believe the opening ceremonies are Friday (Am I right about this?) and our guys will be playing in games on Friday and Sunday. I know (if this is the case) I will be disappointed to not have them there walking in with the rest of Team USA.

I think having two more home wins, especially one against Buffalo, would be more than enough compensation!

But speaking of the Opening Ceremonies:

The Ceremonies involves choreographers, directors, costume designers and international professionals; they will also involve a choreographed exhibition on skates called Sparks of Passion, in which eight ice hockey athletes will race at 50 km an hour inside the Stadio Olimpico. The uniqueness of this exhibition is also guaranteed due to the Sparks of Passion, generating red flames 2 metres long.

Hedican Replaces Miller; Taxi Squad Announced

by Dave Fischer

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bret Hedican To Replace Injured Aaron Miller On

2006 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team

Team USA Names Martin, Cullen and Ryan Miller To "Taxi Squad"

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Bret Hedican (St. Paul, Minn.) of the Carolina Hurricanes will replace the injured Aaron Miller (Buffalo, N.Y.) of the Los Angeles Kings on the 2006 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team it was announced today by Don Waddell, general manager of Team USA.

"We feel bad for Aaron that he's unable to be part of the team," said Waddell. "At the same time we're extremely fortunate to be able to replace Aaron with someone the caliber of Bret Hedican."

Hedican has logged 18 points (5-13) in 51 games with Carolina this season while averaging more than 20 minutes played per game. He last put on a USA jersey at the 2001 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship, where he scored two goals and had two assists in nine games for the U.S. Men's National Team.

Waddell also announced that Matt Cullen (Virginia, Minn.) of the Carolina Hurricanes; Paul Martin (Elk River, Minn.) of the New Jersey Devils; and Ryan Miller (East Lansing, Mich.) of the Buffalo Sabres will make up Team USA's "taxi squad" for the XX Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy.

The players will be available as potential replacements for Team USA members injured during the course of the Olympic Games.

Cullen has scored 20 goals and added 14 assists while posting a +7 rating for the Hurricanes. He was named to last year's 2005 U.S. Men's National Team, but was injured prior to the 2005 IIHF World Championship.

.....

Waddell said that Martin and Cullen will practice with the team in Italy, while Ryan Miller will be on call from the United States.

.....
NOTES: The use of three additional players as injury replacements was proposed by the IIHF due to the heavy demand on the players, where the risk is above average with five games to be played in seven days and in order to avoid the situation where the final games are played with reduced rosters. The International Olympic Council confirmed the proposal. The injury of any player/goalkeeper to be substituted for must be certified by the IIHF Chief Medical Officer and the Chairman of the IOC Medical Commission ...

Terrific for Bret and Matt!! :D

Ryan Miller gets screwed I guess. Don't wish injury on the other 3 - and that's the only way he'll get to Italy.

Sunday should be a blast!!!

Yeah for Matt!

I don't wish injury to anyone either, but Ryan Miller should've been named to the original roster- even with the injury he had at the time- and someone- Waddell- needs to figure out how to get that boy to Turin and not be on stand by in the United States, IMO.

Hedican was on with Gold earlier and sounded very excited. Said he worked out today on his day off because he knew it would be difficult to work out once he got to Italy. He said he was going to just concentrate on the remaining 3 Canes' games before the Olympics and try to stay healthy and be able to contribute. He also agreed with AG that there were a lot of leaders in the Hurricanes room and that kept everyone level headed and egos in check. He really sounded so excited to be playing on the Olympic team. He was almost giddy......at least for Hedican it was giddy!
