kinda new here, forgive me if this doesn't merit its own thread.....

I was watching the New Jersey game the other night and the NJ telecast team were talking about how Gerbs can be a FeNom one game and a complete flop in the next..... and I must say that while I'm a huge canes fan, Gerbs scares the heck outta me..... especially as we get into playoff running.....

the scariest time for him has to be the first 20 seconds that the puck is dropped during ANYTIME during the game, whether the beginning of the game, at the opposite end of the ice faceoff, etc.... he just gets sleepy or something.... somebody feed em some red bull.....

okay.............. i digress...... Go canes..... 8-1 tonight, pens suk

No one can predict the future, but no Gerber doesn't scare me.

No goalie is going to be 100% perfect in stopping even 'stoppable shots'.

He's gotten the job done - as has the rest of the team. I don't think the last 2 losses indicate anything to the contrary.

If you look at our record, he's had 2 losses since Jan 1. I can live with that.:)

It takes a little while for him to get into his groove but when he does he's pretty hard to beat. I wouldn't say he scares me. He doesn't look very comfortable playing the puck behind the net but neither does Ward for that matter. As long as he takes care of business in front of it I'm fine with that.

Let's face some facts here. Gerber is not the only one that has need of some p****ff experience. I believe that for the purpose of advancing far in the p****ffs, Gerber is the goaltender that will be relied upon. I will point out that Cam Ward also has to get his feet wet in p****ff hockey.

So what. Martin Brodeur once faced the same situation. I think that we as fans will have a better handle on just how good our goaltending tandem is once the second season begins. Who knows, they might even impress like they both have during the regular season. If our defenseman shot-blockers continue to do what they do really well, I am not anticipating technical problems from our Men In Goal.

given the crop of goalies in the east..outside of Brodeur, there isnt a goalie I would take ahead of Gerbs....maybe Miller, but that is it. And the canes imo have the best two goalie tandem in the league. I can see a goalie getting roughed up in the playoffs given the way play has been so far and his backup will have to play at some point...to me this is where Carolina has a significant advantage over most everyone else...

He scares me when he strays too far from the net, but that's about it.

He scares me a hell of a lot less than the Latvian Sieve did when he would wander, and I would take Tinu over Archie any day. I know I was a bit nervous aboUt him being our #1 at the start of the season, but he has done a very good job, and put my mind at ease. I'm glad we have him and aren't playing against him most nights.

Doesn't scare me a bit. Anytime he looks a bit shaky to start a game and lets in one or two he would want a second shot at, I don't panic at all for two reasons. 1) I KNOW we have scoring ability this season and we can come back from 2 down EASY. 2) I KNOW Gerber is the best goalie I have ever seen at having amnesia. He shakes off a nasty goal better than anyone, I think. And not only does he forget it, he corrects himself. Not to mention the fact that I think we have a back-up we can count on.

Like aLADDin says, those p-word-proven goalies weren't proven until after they were p-word virgins.

Too bad we can't manage to discuss this without bashing Irbe in the process.

Wandering Irbe? Nothing compared to Jamie Storr, that's for sure. I swear that I still sometimes see him skate so far from the net that he's right in my living room.

**sees nightmare of Sabres game on Blizzard Sunday** :eek2:

Gerbs AND Cam rock.. I have confidence in both of them!! :spin:

i agree with the comments.... he does scare me but i guess I did neglect to comment on the D line in front of him getting it done....

all are right though, not much else out there that can be put ahead of gerbs and ward right now.... these other lil' guys, thomas, grahame, etc.... their hot now, but won't be ongoing...

and to comment on the increased scoring, I feel very confident that once dougie gets into the system a little more, cullen gets out of the headwear (may the force be with him) and stillman/all others are healed nicely, we'll see increased production.... if it "Can" get any better than the freakin' onslaught that they let out last night towards the end....

geezz.... i didn't know that this would bring up archie again!!! whoa.... thank goodness he's not sliding around in the net still!!

thanks for everyone's comments.

Side note on Gerber (forgive if posted elsewhere)...

Last night on ESPNews, Melrose named his picks for the All Star Game (if there was one) and he picked Gerber as the starting goalie for the East.

Does Gerber scare me? Not really, although he has been shaky as can be early in games. I think it's a different mindset around here from the past couple of years when we were the lowest scoring team in the NHL. Chances were pretty good that if either Irbe or Weekes let in a softie or messed up handling the puck one single time, we were screwed. It was huge if we got down by a goal or especially two. This year Gerber has had the advantage of knowing he can allow a goal or two, and we aren't out of the game yet. Mentally, that has to be important for a goalie, knowing he doesn't have to be perfect.

What seems to set Gerber apart is that I think he has been a wall in third periods this year, and has the fortitude to make those game saving saves when he really needs to make them at key times in the game. Weekes and Irbe had the habit of often times allowing game winning or tying goals in the final minute of play. Not so with Gerber, and that's what makes him a keeper. As SHC pointed out, he seems to be very strong mentally and can block out the past and concentrate on what's in front of him.

At this point in the season, I think he deserves a chance to see what he can do it the pxxxoffs. I'll be VERY disappointed if we pick up an outsider to replace him. He's taken us this far, let's give the guy a chance.

Last night about 20 seconds in, I said "gosh, remember the days were we gave up a goal in the first minute, like every game" and then said "ooh, better shut up, there's 20 seconds left in this minute" - and then BANG, Aaron Ward scored. A nice change.

I think I said that to talkingcanes when I sat with her for a game. Honestly, I'm still getting used to the fact that it can be 18:00 left in the first and the score is 0-0. And I still look at the scoreboard with fondness when we've scored 2 goals, like "we can score 2 goals and have 2 periods left".

Yes, I'm savoring every moment.

Yeegads.

Gerber is the most consistent starter this team has had since Irbe's magical '99-'01 stretch. Does he have a bad night here and there? Absolutely, but that's how it goes. Gerber is positionally sound, seals up well, and refocuses easily. He's also a darned good puckhandler. People here and in the arena tend to have immediate vocal spasms as soon as a goaltender leaves the vicinity of the crease/trapezoid, but Gerber is as good a handler as we've had here in a LONG time. He can make long, accurate passes, is comfortable shooting forehand and backhand, and makes quick, correct decisions.

Gerber is unproven in the plXyXffs. Patrick Roy was unproven in the plXyXffs (insert Aaryn's Steve Penney comment :)) and won a non-Nextel Cup and a not Ryan Smyth-e Trophy. Off the top of my head, the following teams have a lot more to be worried about in goal heading into the plXyXffs than we do: Vancouver, Edmonton, Philly, Tampa, Montreal.

Now, if you want to know how I really feel, I can tell you, but that's my nice rant.

all i can say is that gerber has been more than just amazing this season. i am an old fan of his' (he used to play for faerjestad, the team that i support here in sweden, so i already knew who he was before he was acquired by JR)...

... now the thing about gerber is that SO FAR he's N O T been able to prove himself come p-word part of the season. he was more than just amazing in faerjestad too during the regular season, but turned out to be worse than horrible in the swedish finals and he was basically the one reason faerjestad didn't win the swedish elite league... and T H A T really scares me!

but on the other hand, that's the past and let's hope it's behind him - maybe representing Switzerland in the olympics will give him some experience that turns out to be just what he needed...

GO CANES!!! :D :D :D :D

all i can say is that gerber has been more than just amazing this season. i am an old fan of his' (he used to play for faerjestad, the team that i support here in sweden, so i already knew who he was before he was acquired by JR)...

... now the thing about gerber is that SO FAR he's N O T been able to prove himself come p-word part of the season. he was more than just amazing in faerjestad too during the regular season, but turned out to be worse than horrible in the swedish finals and he was basically the one reason faerjestad didn't win the swedish elite league... and T H A T really scares me!

but on the other hand, that's the past and let's hope it's behind him - maybe representing Switzerland in the olympics will give him some experience that turns out to be just what he needed...

GO CANES!!! :D :D :D :D

If anything, Both He and Cam scare me when they let off some Huge rebounds. I wish they could control them better, but other than that I really Can't complain on what Gerber has done for us this year.

Plus I feel that we have the best 1 and 2 goalie pairing in the LEAGUE. To me it seems like him and Ward are having no problems with each other and are ok with sharing the load this year which is a big plus!!!

Both Cam and Tinu (especially Tinu) have remarkable rebound control when compared to Weekes or Luongo.

Gerber scares me ALL the time. I yell at my TV and jump all around like "GET BACK in the frickin net!!" LMAO...I swear he needs to not feel the need to vacate his area sometimes. Save me some sanity in the process!! :D

I have faith in him though, because he's solid. He scares me, yet he doesn't, we have a love hate relationship, me and Martin. :smoke:

The current score of the Finland-Switzerland game (ouch--kann man mal 'nen Bruder helfen?)* notwithstanding....

I have no fear when Tinu wanders--but that's come from actually watching him and seeing that he does a pretty good job of controlling when and where he wanders.

That and the fact that he's much better at playing the puck than his predecessors.

*:Can a brother get a little help here?
