Larionov's days in Detroit may be over

Forward Igor Larionov's future in the NHL may be coming to an end.

The 42 year old has yet to hear back from the Detroit Red Wings about possibly playing one more season with the team. Larionov will become an unrestricted free agent this summer, but has indicated that he is only interested in re-signing with the Red Wings.

The Red Wings are intent on trying to re-sign free agents Steve Yzerman, Sergei Fedorov, Darren McCarty and Jason Woolley. According to the Detroit News, general manager Ken Holland put new offers on the table to those four before going to Finland to scout the World Hockey Championships last week.

With the team not expected to increase its budget and its desire to work several younger players into the lineup, Larionov may not be an option for Detroit.

In 74 games this season, Larionov had 10 goals and 33 assists.

the goal that sucked all the oxygen out of the ESA  I was exhausted after that game and had a really bad feeling the Cup was
gone the minute that goal was scored. especially since we saw a loss like that suck the life out of Montreal in the 2nd round. Sometimes you

I think it will be good as well. I think that Larionov is still a good player, but there are also a couple kiddies that are ready to be brought over.

Lots of talk but very little action

Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland says there's nothing to report when it comes to contract talks involving the team's free agents, except that there's a lot of talking.

Sergei Fedorov, Darren McCarty, Jason Woolley and Steve Yzerman are set to become free agents on July 1. Only Yzerman is a certainty to return while the others may take the opportunity to test the market.

Fedorov turned down a $50-million, five year offer earlier in the season. The team's latest offer is reportedly for more money but less years.

"We're trying to get a feel for what it's going to take to get it done," Holland tells the Detroit Free Press. "But we're not close to anything."

As for McCarty, the team is said to be offering a salary similar to the $1.95-million he made this past sesaon.

Woolley earned around $1.3-million this year and the Red Wings say they would like to re-sign him at a reasonable price.

Yzerman made $8.5-million this season and while Holland says the captain will be back next year, talks have not started on a new deal.

Well one of the top prospects, Igor Grigorenko, broke his pelvis last night in a car accident. So, Larionov could possibly come back, if the the Wings don't feel some of the other kids are ready for the NHL.

Wings' Grigorenko injured in car crash
Canadian Press
5/16/2003

DETROIT (CP) - Highly rated Russian prospect Igor Grigorenko of the Detroit Red Wings suffered a broken hip after being involved in a single car accident in Russia, the NHL club said Friday.

Red Wings GM Ken Holland said Grigorenko, 20, ``is believed to have suffered a hip fracture in the incident.''

TASS, the Russian news agency, reported that Grigorenko was returning from a night club early Friday morning in his home town of Togliatti when his BMW crashed into a billboard stand.

Rescuers struggled for an hour to get Grigorenko out of his mangled car, TASS reported. He was taken to hospital and remained in intensive care Friday.

Doctors said he would be out at least three months, according to TASS.

The Wings selected Grigorenko 62nd overall in the 2001 NHL entry draft. The speedy forward played on Russia's top line with Ilya Kovalchuk of the Atlanta Thrashers and Pavel Datsyuk of the Red Wings at the world hockey championship in Finland earlier this month.

He also starred at the world junior championship in Halifax in January, scoring the tying goal in Russia's 3-2 gold medal victory over Canada and was named to the tournament all-star team

Hope he can recover...you always hate to see an injury ruin an infant career.

I would assume pelvis injuries are hard to recover because of the location...it would have to restrict range of motion, wouldn't it? Then again, it ain't a joint, so I really don't know.

Hope he recovers...

Yeah, that's what I am worried about. This injury could really mess him up. Slava Kozlov was in an awful care accident years ago, and was never the same player after. I hope the same thing doesn't happen to Grigorenko.

I remember that game like it was just yesterday...a feeling of being totally numb. I can remember us sitting there not knowing whether to cry or scream. By far the worse hockey day of my life. I also had a gut feeling that the outcome of that game would affect the outcome of the finals.

In all honesty, i still believe that if we had won that overtime game, we would have won the Cup....imo....

also, i sincerely hope Grigorenko will be ok....

An update for those who care to know, is that Grigorenko is in serious condition. He's in a coma right now with swelling on the brain and has developed an embolism from the fracture. This basically means he has a very slim chance of living.

Wow, hip fracture really didn't tell the whole story, did it? that is terrible and I hope there is improvement in his condition soon. I also hope the medical care he is receiving is adequate. I've read some horror stories about hospitals in Russia.

Grigorenko suffers surgical complications
Associated Press
5/21/2003

MOSCOW (AP) - Detroit Red Wings prospect Igor Grigorenko remained in serious condition Wednesday, five days after he was involved in a serious car accident, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

The 20-year-old forward, the Red Wings' second-round draft pick in 2001, was on a respirator in the hospital in Togliatti where he underwent surgery for a fractured left tibia and hip, the report said.

Even though his high temperature and blood pressure have been lowered, ``the condition of Grigorenko is very worrisome, the prognosis remains unfavourable,'' ITAR-Tass quoted the head of the hospital's intensive care unit, whom it did not name.

Meanwhile, the player's agent said Grigorenko has developed an infection in his lung.

Mark Lapush said in Wendesday's Detroit Free Press that Grigorenko was under heavy medication and was in ``critical but stable'' condition.

``He hurt himself very badly,'' Lapush said. ``But everything is fixable. It just takes time. In two weeks, he can be in better shape than today. He's a strong, young guy. He's going to be all right.''

Grigorenko had a pin inserted into his leg during surgery, LaPush said.

Lapush also denied a previous report that the player had slipped into a coma.

Red Wings officials had considered sending a doctor to Russia to evaluate and treat Grigorenko.

``In the end, I don't know how beneficial it would have been,'' general manager Ken Holland said. ``We're trying to do everything we can to make sure Igor Grigorenko gets the best treatment. Obviously it's a difficult situation. I wish we could help more.''<

Wings centre Igor Larionov served as a translator so the Red Wings' doctors could speak to Russian doctors, Holland said.

Grigorenko was voted the top forward at the world junior tournament in January and played on a line with Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk and Atlanta's Ilya Kovalchuk for Russia at the world championships this month in Helsinki, Finland.

A deal must be reached by July 15 for Grigorenko to be on the Red Wings' roster next year. Otherwise, he would remain under contract in Russia.

some good news.....finally

MOSCOW (AP) - Detroit Red Wings prospect Igor Grigorenko, who was injured in an auto accident earlier this month, is improving significantly, the news agency Interfax reported Thursday.

The 20-year-old Russian forward was taken off a respirator and was fully conscious, although his condition was still serious.

Grigorenko underwent surgery for hip and leg fractures and his condition deteriorated when he suffered an embolism, apparently brought on by the fractures.

Grigorenko was a second-round pick by the Red Wings in 2001

Wings prospect out of intensive care
June 3, 2003
BY NICHOLAS J. COTSONIKA
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Red Wings prospect Igor Grigorenko is out of intensive care.

"It was a miracle with him," agent Mark Lapush said Monday. "The doctor told me now he feels Igor's going to be all right."

Grigorenko, 20, lost control of his car and crashed May 16. He suffered a broken left thigh and shin bones, and later developed a fat embolism in his left lung -- fat tissue from broken bone blocking blood vessels -- a potentially fatal complication. With trouble breathing, high blood pressure and a fever, he was on a ventilator and heavily sedated.

After he was taken off the ventilator late last week, Grigorenko began talking a little bit and eating on his own. Now he is talking more. Lapush said he spoke to him on the phone for about a minute Saturday night.

"He's doing well," Lapush said. "He's healing fast."

Grigorenko is resting in a separate room in a hospital in Togliatti, Russia. The Wings eventually want to bring him to Detroit, but there are no plans for him to move anytime soon.

"He can't travel until he gets stronger," assistant general manager Jim Nill said. "We're just kind of going week by week now. We're just waiting to get him out of the hospital."

Grigorenko leaves hospital

TSN.ca Staff

6/11/2003
Detroit Red Wings prospect Igor Grigorenko was released from hospital on Tuesday, almost a month after suffering life threatening injuries in a car crash.

Grigorenko's agent Mark Lapush spoke on behalf of his client with Red Wings general manager Ken Holland, saying the player is "feeling good" and is looking forward to playing in the NHL.

"He said, 'Mark, trust me, I'm going to play hockey. I'm going to play for Detroit,'" Lapush tells the Detroit Free Press.

Grigorenko plans to play for a Russian team in five to six months and hopes to be in the Red Wings lineup for the 2004-05 season - unless there is a work stoppage/strike following next year.

"It was very encouraging to have a conversation with Igor," said Holland said. "We're obviously thrilled. With the hospital releasing him, his future looks bright. Now we just have to let the healing process run its course. He's got a long way to go."

Grigorenko suffered a badly broken left leg after being involved in a car accident back on May 16. He then developed a fat embolism in his left lung which resulted in trouble breathing, high blood pressure and a fever. He was placed on a ventilator and heavily sedated.

His condition eventually stablized and he is now able to move around on crutches

I can't really see him going anywhere else.. but, if he still wants to play and the Wings don't pick him up, why not? More power to him for playing into his 40's! I am sure some young team out there can use his leadership.
