Mrs. Caveman and I are planning to go to Vancouver's 2010 winter games. Obviously no actual games tickets are for sale, but as we've never made it to an olympics yet... what exactly do we do? When should we book hotels, etc? We're kicking ourselves for missing Salt Lake City, but she was in law school at the time so it didn't really make sense for us. We're definitely not going to miss this one. Any tips for the clueless?

Hey! We're planning on going too!!

I also have no idea how to approach it. We were thinking we'd hook up with a travel agent who hopefully has some Olympic experience sometime this year just to see when/how to get the ball rolling.

We'd also appreciate any tips!

Well it'll be a LGC party in Vancouver eh?

The plan is for Mr. SoCal & I to go- our thought was since we're not sure when we'll be able to see the Canes play the Canucks and don't know if we'll ever get a true Western Canadian road trip- with the change to the schedule, and since Mr. SoCal has been in Vancouver several times before we married, and I have gone on and on about how I want to go, we decided a few months ago that would be a goal- so we called our travel person at AAA- and she told us that typically there is an 'order' to it for those of us who are the general public, and that as Turin comes to an end, the ramp up for Vancouver begins, so we're on a list through AAA to receive the specifics. I'll post what I find out. This is one of those 'on the list to do in my lifetime' and I'm still kicking myself on Salt Lake City- having been to the Summer games in L.A., it's such a cool thing seeing all the summer athletes, not being a full on cold weather gal, I still want to experience all that winter stuff and basically another excuse to travel to somewhere fabulous.

Write it on the schedule in permanent ink today and then you KNOW what you'll be doing 4 years from now!! Nah, I know what you mean.

I think it would be awesome if a group of us could go. I get into a lot more interesting stuff with you guys around.

Since we live so close now (and my Aunt lives less then an hour from there) we are hoping on a trip up for part of it. I'd like to take my mom to the skating. She loves the pairs and individuals skating (she's not a fan of the ice dancing though...). :spin:

I went to Salt Lake Olympics (both Gold and Bronze medal games).

Had the absolute time of my life!!!! Another highlite was that we stayed at a HUMONGOUS house that they were renting out rooms. It was awesome to be there with other people enjoying the same things.

I hope to go to Vancouver too!!! I hope the locals treat us better that they treated our young guys.

Someone correct me, if I'm wrong.

Aren't tickets for the really popular events extremely hard to get? Aren't those handled by lottery? It seems like the medals games for hockey are like that, aren't they-- for example?

I am not sure if you can book hotels now but the sooner the better. Don't be shocked at the prices. Super gouge!! ANd the longer you wait the more expensive it got.

I got my tickets on EBAY but they cost so much (ok, I went for front row).....then I didn't have any money for anything else. Next time I won't do the front row thing and hopefully enjoy some short track and skiing.(and other hockey games!) We didn't get there until right before the Bronze game because we spent four nights at $250 a night. But the place was first class all the way. That was probably because I waited so long....And by that I mean October before the Olympics!!! The best part was when I got the tickets, who knew who would be at those games and we lucked out that USA went to the Gold Medal game. BUT IT SUCKED WHEN THEY LOST!! :D

So my point is......do this stuff as early as possible. The longer you wait the more they gouge. But expect ridiculous prices anyway. They will have stuff online about what is available hotel, house wise. I still keep in touch with the hosts of the house. Very memorable time.

I am not sure if you can book hotels now but the sooner the better. Don't be shocked at the prices. Super gouge!! ANd the longer you wait the more expensive it got.

I have friends who went to the Atlanta summer games. They got tickets for ALL of the premier events...gold medal in gymnastics, the swimming, diving, etc, etc. With enough money you can get anything, I guess.

Someone correct me, if I'm wrong.

Aren't tickets for the really popular events extremely hard to get? Aren't those handled by lottery? It seems like the medals games for hockey are like that, aren't they-- for example?

yea you will see tickets to bid on EBAY and they will cost, that is for sure.

I wasn't even planning on going and I ran across the tickets on EBAY and next thing I know.....I'm bidding like a mofo.....and all the sudden, I am like.....HOLY SH*T, I am going to the OLYMPICS!!!

what an adrenlin rush to try to win those things. lol......

I also want to say that I lucked out and got a nice place to stay in. At the time I was looking, the regular hotel rooms that were left were the same price!!
