Defenceman Kenny Jonsson's future with the New York Islanders could hinge on how smoothly contract talks go this summer.

According to the New York Post, Jonsson told a Swedish newspaper he would consider not returning to the NHL next season if talks become long and tedious with the Islanders.

Jonsson is a restricted free agent. His $2.5-million salary was third highest on the Islanders blueline behind only Roman Hamrlik and Janne Niinimaa.

General manager Mike Milbury, who has referred to Jonsson as the team's best defenceman, is reportedly very intersted in getting a deal hammered out as soon as possible.

Jonsson joined the Islanders back in 1996 in a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs for Wendel Clark and Mathieu Schneider. He had eight goals and 26 points in 71 games this past season but continued to experience what the team called "post-traumatic migraines" as a result of the concussion he suffered in last year's playoffs.
