Disappointed Esche named Team USA third goalie, mulled skipping Olympics
By ED MORAN

TURIN, Italy - Flyers goalie Robert Esche is on his way to the Olympics this afternoon, but he will not be playing.
Esche told the Daily News this morning that he has been told by U.S. coach Peter Laviolette that Tampa Bay goalie John Grahame will be the starter and that Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro will back him up.
“I’m obviously disappointed,” Esche said from his home in New Jersey before going to Philadelphia International Airport to fly to Italy with Flyers and U.S. teammates Derian Hatcher and Mike Knuble.
“Laviolette called me and told me I wasn’t going to be playing. He said he was naming John Grahame the starter. I was upset and thought about not coming, but I talked with [Flyers and Team USA assistant general manager Paul Holmgren] and he told me not to worry about it.”
Esche said he will be ready to play if needed.
“I’m not going to be a baby about this,” (too late) he said. “I’m coming over and I’m going to work hard and stay in shape for when I come back. Laviolette told me he had great faith in Grahame.
“I’m going to be a good guy for the other guys in that locker room. The guys in that locker room are great guys.
“I feel great right now. I really do. I’ve really been battling these last few games and I feel ready to go. I’ve played really well and if they need me I’ll be ready.”
In other Flyers/Olympic news, Michal Handzus has withdrawn from participating in the Olympics because of a shoulder injury he suffered in Friday’s win over Washington. Handzus was hit by Danius Zubrus. He played at Ottawa the following night, but struggled and decided to withdraw from the Slovakian team this morning.
I guess Esche didn't fully grasp the 3 goalie concept. Or did as long has someone else was the 3rd.

QFT. If Miller could get on to the bench somehow, they'd be a formidable tandem with the way Grahame's been playing lately.

I had always expected Esche to be the #1, but I guess he just couldn't come back from his injury strongly enough. Honestly, I would have expected to see DiPietro as the starter before Grahame, but he proved a few nights ago against the 'Canes that he's more than capable of standing on his head and single-handedly winning a game or two.

DiPietro has proven to be a very poor choice, imo. I'm honestly surprised he's #2.
Grahame was an obvious choice for starter after his recent run of shutouts.
Esche's attitude is horribly poor. he better deal with it himself and not let it rub off on anyone else.

I see why John is number one after the performance he gave the Canes. But hopefully he won't fall back on bad habits.
This is a weak spot for Team USA. Maybe they will surprize us.
