I don't think we've got a Speedskating thread yet, do we?
As anyone heard about Joey Cheek's story? He sounds like a really good guy:
Cheek will donate his gold-medal bonus
TORINO (AP) -- Joey Cheek walked in with everyone expecting him to talk about winning an Olympic speedskating gold medal. Instead, he had something else on his mind.
The moderator immediately asked for questions. Cheek interrupted, explaining that he wanted to make a statement.
Did he ever.
Joey Cheek, a bronze medalist in the 1000m at the 2002 Salt Lake Games, won gold in the 500m on Monday. The Olympic 500m champion declared that he was giving away his $25,000 U.S. Olympic Committee bonus for winning the event to help children in the war-torn region of Darfur in Sudan.
"I wanted to make it meaningful,'' he said. "It's empowering to think of someone else.''
Actually, Cheek came up with the idea long before he skated the two best races of his life Monday. His combined time was .65 of a second ahead of the silver medalist, Russia's Dmitry Dorofeyev -- an amazing margin in a furious sprint usually decided by hundredths of a second. South Korea's Lee Kang-Seok took the bronze.
"I've been plotting this a little bit in my head,'' the American said.
Cheek stopped by the athletes' village office of Johann Olav Koss' group, Right To Play, hours before his race to read up on the charity that helps impoverished children. Koss won three golds at the 1994 Lillehammer Games and inspired Cheek to take up speed skating.
"I thought maybe I could walk a little in his rather large shoes,'' said Cheek, who met with Koss a few days ago.
Cheek challenged his sponsors to match his donation. He plans to visit the Darfur region, where some 180,000 people have died and 2 million forced to flee in a bitter conflict, and see how his money is helping.
"I have been blessed with competing in the Olympics,'' said Cheek, who recalled something his mother Chris told her two sons: "Not to have good intentions, but to do good things.''
Before doing his best work off the ice, Cheek tore up the oval. He was the only skater to break 35 seconds -- and he did it in both his races, giving him a combined time of 1 minute, 9.76 seconds.
"It's miraculous,'' he said. "I'm kind of shocked that I skated that fast.''
Cheek gave the United States its second speed skating gold medal of the Torino Games, adding to the one Chad Hedrick earned in the 5000m on Saturday.
"That was awesome,'' teammate Casey FitzRandolph said. "He not only won, he blew everybody away.''
Cheek followed FitzRandolph as the second consecutive U.S. champion in the 500. FitzRandolph won four years ago, but this time he nearly fell in his first race and finished 12th.
The other Americans faltered, too. Tucker Fredricks was 25th and Kip Carpenter , the 2002 bronze medalist, was 26th.
By finishing his first race nearly a half-second ahead of everyone, Cheek left little suspense about the outcome.
"He's incredible,'' Carpenter said. "He's the only guy who brought his 'A' game to this competition.''
Cheek, a former inline skater from Greensboro, N.C., had greatly improved coming into the Olympics, winning his first major title at the world sprint championships last month.
"I knew I was in great shape, but there's so many amazing skaters here,'' he said. "I screwed up so many times over the years, but I've always tried to learn from what I did wrong.''
With a gold medal added to the bronze he won in the 1000m four years ago, Cheek has done everything he ever wanted in speed skating. He'll retire at the end of the season and head to college, where he plans to study economics.
Maybe now Harvard will give him a second look. The Ivy League school turned down his application, but the 26-year-old Cheek was understanding.
"I've been out of school for 10 years,'' he said. "They're probably not sure I can still read and write.''
And don't be surprised to see Cheek's name on a political ballot down the road, either.
"He works harder than anyone,'' Fredricks said. "Everything he gets, he deserves.''
I heard on the radio this morning, that he's gotten Nike to give $30,000 in merchandise to charity.

I was just coming to ask about this. What's up with them getting money? Is that standard? It's great what he's doing with it, but I never thought the athletes got any monetary rewards in the Olympics. Maybe i've always been clueless?

I read about him in the paper and saw him on the Today show this morning. He seems like a regular kind of guy.
It's always about the money. Amateurs (in the unpaid, make my living in another job sense) in the Olympics? Thing of the past in most, maybe all, sports.

That Joey Cheek is a sweetheart. We were cheering our brains out for him last night in the 500! How can you not like someone with such a great beamy smile and a "Sopranos" name? lol :D Good karma that guy! I got a good vibe about him before I knew he was from Greensboro. :) I like cheering on good karma.

Part of it is Davis not wanting to race in the new team pursuit event earlier in the week because he felt it would interfere with his preparation for his individual events. Hedrick wanted him to race with the team, as the alternate in his place wasn't going to cut it, and didn't, from what I heard. It basically cost the other guys (and the US) a medal to not have him there.
Don't know if that's the only issue, but that's a big part of it -- the whole "name on the front" vs. "name on the back" kind of thing...
I'm not saying who's right or anything... that whole team event is new to the whole discipline, maybe Davis didn't care for the event at all, or maybe it was in protest of when it was scheduled in comparison to his other events, not sure.

then he should have continued to refuse as opposed to appearing uninterested or defensive or whatever impression other people got. but then, I guess he may have thought a total refusal may have negatively affected any commercial contracts he's hoping to corner. (I think it's always about the $$$) seems to me a better strategy would have been to say I'm a selfish SOB and I'm good with that. I personally would have no problem with that. Just choose your priorities and be happy with the result You won a gold medal. That's great. You skated absolutely perfectly. I can't see the lack of joy. makes no sense to me. team, individual, everyone makes their choices. Hedrick's response (when asked if he was happy for Davis), that he was happy for Cheek, makes him look equally bad IMO. grow up boys.

Man, this stuff between Shani Davis and Chad Hedrick and Joey Cheek is just freaky. Davis just gave the wierdest freakin' interview after medalling that I've ever seen!
yeah, i saw that... what the hell is the deal?
He had been refusing to talk to the Media with the whole thing about him not skating the team pursuit, so I have a feeling that was his showing of displeasure of having to do an interview.

yeah that has bothered me... how do people like figureskaters skate in all these ameteur competitions and still manage to live.
The definition of amateur has long since been changed. In the "old days", "amateurs" had training fund type things. The endorsement money went into that and could only be used to offset training fees. That was changed LONG ago. Now they can use endorsement money for anything they want.
Different 'federations' have different rules about what consitutes their ability to compete in sanctioned competitions, but they pretty much ALL get paid. Lots of federations offer 'bonuses' to those that medal, like the Speed Skating bonus in CL's article. In fact, it might be the USOC that's offering medal bonuses (didn't read the whole article yet).
In Figure Skating, depending on how skaters finish the year, they get X, Y, or Z level of support that goes toward training fees. Continuing with the figure skating example, they do still have the pro/amateur status, but it's basically called olympic 'eligible or non-eligible'. You basically have to ask permision of USA Skating before you do other types of events or tours. The 'eligible' skaters can all do those Champion or Stars on Ice events and maintain their eligible status, as long as the get approval. On the other hand, if they don't get approval and sign up for one of those "Ice Wars" deals (that became popular after the Tonya/Nancy thing) or some Vegas show or something w/o permission, then the USA Skating will consider you non-eligible for future sanctioned events. That kind of thing.
I would imagine the vast majority of winter olympic sports have no real distinction.

then he should have continued to refuse as opposed to appearing uninterested or defensive or whatever impression other people got. but then, I guess he may have thought a total refusal may have negatively affected any commercial contracts he's hoping to corner. .
It is very possiable that he was given no choice on weather or not to have to do that interview since he was the gold medal winner.
I reallt have no problem with him not skating hte Team pursuit if he felt it migh cost him a chance to win gold in this event... no one isd giving Hendrick a hard time for not walking in with the rest of the US team in the opening cermonies because he was resting for his best event...

I don't care who interviews or who skates or whatever. I just think it's really funny seeing the boys be totally catty.
If you watched the team pursuit thing you saw that they really did need the guy. The one filling in had fallen about a 1/4 lap behind them when they finished. It was sad to see. And that poor guy's getting scapgoated for it when it wasn't supposed to be his event anyway.
But I really don't think that means Davis should have felt some obligation to compete with them if he really felt it would hurt his performance in his main events.
I'm kinda getting the idea that he refused to participate because he didn't like his teammates, though. Again, don't care, just think it's funny.
It just makes them both seem like a junior high school girls.

aahh the DRAMA of the skating boys. It would of been more funny if it was the ice skating boys instead of the speedskating.
Johnny Weir vs someone else would of been more fun because Johnny brings great drama in everything!!
I too was taken back by Davis's interview. The lady finally said *Are you mad?*....lol.........a smile would of been nice. But clearly he didn't want to be there being interviewed.
as far as the pursuit race. Why was this even an issue???? Did they just decide to race it recently??? I mean. did they not know until the last minute Davis didn't want to race it??? I bet had he did, they would of got another Gold.

I saw someone interviewed on MSNBC, name escapes me, but an American journalist. He pointed out that while Shani chose not to do the pursuit, he was also forgoing a medal for himself, not just the rest of the guys.
According to this guy, he was planning to do the relay, and then the approached him late to do the pursuit also, and he declined. He talked about how it could be viewed from the other side, in that he would have been taking someone else's Olympic experience away.
I agree SHC, it's just funny to see all the zingers being thrown back and forth.
I thought the interviewer was poor when he didn't give the "normal" (whatever that is) response or the expected response. She seemed to want to "catch him" with some headlining comment. I thought when he said "I"m at a loss for words" she should have just respected that, rather than continue the questioning as if she knew it wasn't an honest comment.
EDIT: Well, apparently I wasn't listening carefully because there sure ain't no relay, but the rest of the stuff I'm pretty sure he said.

Well good for Patrice, or Fabrice, or whatever the Italian's name was for winning and stealing the Gold from Chad and Shani.
I loved Hedrick after his first event, but he's been a big stinker since then. Full of lots of "not excuses, but some of these guys don't do all my events" following the bronze.
Interesting that both he and Shani were being gracious immediately after their event and then Shani let it go in the press conf later. I don't blame him for pointing out that he hugged Hedrick after his gold but didn't even get a handshake from Hedrick after he won his gold. I'd want to point that out as well. Guess it wasn't all behind them after all.
I thought it was hilarious when the press all turned to Hedrick and said "well Chad?" and because he couldn't refute it, he decides to point out that he walked in the opening ceremonies.
Maybe they could borrow the ruler that Bob and Gary needed last summer and be done with it.

LMAO ! Ya know E??- I thought the same damn thing as I was walkin' out the door to go to work- I literally had a de ja vu moment of Bob & Gary and the "there's no prOgress to report because they're still stuck on a salary cap" schtick that prattled on endlessly. seriously, I thought the exact same thing when I heard Shani and Chad go at it. OMG>
OK, so I'm not in on all the hoo-ha of these two jokers except what I've heard on the peripheral, i.e. the Today Show-type chatter, and bits in the primetime telecast etc. so I'm not hip to all the details, other than what I've seen in bits and read in the papers- but holy crap, these two are worse than ANY women I have ever seen.
The thing that made me HOOT - was the comment that Chad made about Shani not participating in one of the events and that he 'felt betrayed'. Well good grief, are you joined at the hip? Did you pledge undying love for each other? WTF? "betrayed" implies some sort of connection, promises made or something. I frankly couldn't see them in a room together for a minute with out all hell breaking loose. And could Shani get to the press conference with his beanie on properly? and preferrably adjusted on his head a little better? and Chad was cute for about 2 seconds until he became a sniveling whiner. Not appealing at all.
Fabrizio (?Fabrice?) totally deserved that win and seemed so full of joy and in the Olympic spirit - unlike the ugly Americans, who are just too dang annoying for words and so not deserving.

but holy crap, these two are worse than ANY women I have ever seen.
It might have been Lampley on the late-night show, or either Costas, but they had a good line last night -- comparing it to a soap opera and they named a couple like "As the World Turns", "Young and the Restless", and then he said "or perhaps more appropriately: All My Children." HA!!
Well, I thought it was funny anyway, even though their own (NBC's) continued harping on it hasn't helped matters anyway.... just send them to their rooms and leave them alone for a while....

Early on, I was giving Shani Davis the benefit of the doubt thinking that he is a decent guy. NBC spotlighted his life and his Mom on a segment early in the Olympics and he seemed pretty stand-up. But after all the interviews, his lack of class and his lack of "team" (not just the relay event), I have decided that he is the biggest ASS and most angry person at the Olympics. I am embarrassed that he and Johhny Wier represented the USA and I wish the media would just ignore him.
Shani is now a plantiff in a Racial Profiling lawsuit against the city of Chicago... From his behavior, he probably mouthed-off to the police officer. I hope his 15 minutes are over, but unfortunately, the media will keep this lowlife in the headlines.
BTW, Chad Hedick isn't high on my favorite Olympians list either.

Early on, I was giving Shani Davis the benefit of the doubt thinking that he is a decent guy. NBC spotlighted his life and his Mom on a segment early in the Olympics and he seemed pretty stand-up. I still haven't seen what Shani Davis has done to peg him as the 'villian' in the whole deal. And I've never seen him in a setting where I think he's angry at all. He's probably sick to death that his choice not to compete in the team pursuit dogged him every step of the way since.
From a public perspective, other than giving an 'unsatisfactory' interview to the NBC sideline chick (according to her anyway), what has he done? His post medal ceremony interview was great - he was happy and sounded like any other medal winner. Perhaps when he said he was "at a loss for words" immediately following the event, he actually meant it.
Hedrick was more than happy to receive Davis' congratulations when he won his gold medal, but refused to reciprocate and instead chose to congratulate the silver medalist. C'mon. How whacked is that.
I think in their 'sane' moment after getting beaten by the Italian last night, they both said it best, they are competitive guys. It's an individual sport, I think you pretty much have to be selfish to be successful.
Stefi Graf dumped John McEnroe during her last Wimbledon because she got further in the individual draw than she expected and wanted to focus on singles. He was devasted to have to forfeit. Stefi's image survived.

During the coverage Tuesday night (?) they showed a clip from the press conference they had right after their race. Things were just wrapping up and Shani Davis said something to the effect of Chad Heddrick not being the bigger person and coming up to shake his hand after the race. Needless to say Chad looked about like :eek2: and just repeated the whole thing about Shani not participating in the team pursuit being selfish and blah blah blah.
At least they aren't sending goons after each other with tire irons...

OK--I'm sorry, but you can't wipe the foul taste in my mouth away by running down to the rail and cheering for your fellow competitor, who you were arguing with. Blah...blah...blah...
Another embarassment in an ever increasing Team USA belt.
