Okay - it's time. I need to understand this game. Sure, I can google curling and find the rules, but I figured you 'enthusiasts' can make it funner for me.
I've actually watched Curling a few times - even yesterday. But I have no idea what's going on.
So if I can pull out my flesh colored tights and talk figure skating, Guyute (or talkingcanes or any of the other curling entusiasts) can pull out their ugly back, totally flat soled shoes, and give me Curling 101 .
:D

I'm so glad you posted this, E! I watched USA-Finland curling yesterday and had to go online to nbcolympics.com to see if they had some rules. They did but it wasn't very helpful! Our question at home--if there are no stones in the house during the last stone, what's to keep the last team from always scoring? I did like the ones when you knocked out two stones with one pitch (slide?, throw?).

"ugly back"? I haven't mooned you... lately. :p
it's a pretty simple sport. the stones that they slide are solid granite. 44lbs is the limit IIRC.. not sure what Olympic weight is.
the "house" is the target at the end. same basic principles of shuffleboard, but on a bullseye instead of pyramid. one throws the stone, and you have two sweepers. they fine-tune the speed of the glide.
I believe teams are usually 4 in the olympics... dont' quite remember. 5 man/woman teams are acceptable also. you have a Skip and may also have a Vice Skip. this is the player (or players) that will hang out in the House and are able to give direction to the other members. Only the skip (and vs) are allowed in the house.
a stone in motion must not be touched by the sweepers. if it is, it may be removed from play immediately... at the discretion of the opposition's "skip" (captain). he/she however, can choose to leave it in play, if he/she thinks removing it would actually help the offending team. (ie- if leaving it in play would pose a problem for them.. then leave it)
in the center of the bullseye, there's a "Tee"... a large cross that extends out.. the center is dead-center in the bullseye. that is where you want to be closest to.
a team scores one point for each stone that is closer to the Tee than any (any being key) opposing stone. it's hard to explain that in words.
if I drop a stone 2 inches from the Tee, and you drop one 9 inches from the Tee.. I so far have one point. I go again, and slide one in 7 inches away.. and your 2nd throw is way out. I get 2 points because both stones are inside of your nearest one.
www.curlingbasics.com has a lot of handy little flash animations for rules, scoring and such if you're so inclined. :)

lol Queen of the Pantsless Ones, thank you :)
at that site I linked, one of the things you should probably look at the animation on if you intend on watching this sport (it Is a sport :p ) is the Free Zone Guard. it's a Huge part of the game, and the animation does a great job of showing/explaining it.
I can't link anything from within the site, because it's all flash. grr.

I love curling. I don't see it except at the Olympics, but I just love it. I want to try it, but I'm afraid I'd tip over like Humpty Dumpty or fall with my broom and break a hip. Graceful, I am not

if there are no stones in the house during the last stone, what's to keep the last team from always scoring?
if you're playing a team that can't block you from getting into the house (with guards above the house), nor can get close to having the closest stone, and leaves it Wide Open for the last throw.... then, they deserve to lose. lol

Isn't there a curling club that plays in H'borough?
Okay guy - you covered the scoring part. Cool.
Is there some rule about when you can and can't 'sweep'? It seemed like sometimes the same team that threw were the only ones that swept and sometimes the other team did as well. Can you only sweep around your own stone?
And Vandy's question is a good one - if you are throwing last, don't you always score? But yesterday there were scoreless frames (or whatever you call it).

But yesterday there were scoreless frames (or whatever you call it).

yeah, there are rules to who can/can't sweep and when/where.
between the Tee lines (top and bottom) a stone can be swept by the team to which it belongs.
an opponent can not sweep a stone between the Tee lines.
Behind the Tee line is a different story. If the sweepers whose stone it is are happy with the speed and curl, they can stop sweeping. One player from the opposition can jump in here (once it's behind the Tee) and continue sweeping, in an effort to get it further past center, stop it from curling, etc. The stone's "owners" must not interfere with the opponent sweeping their stone behind the tee line.
as for a game ending with a scoreless End (a frame is an End in curling)... uh, I dunno. did the last stone come to rest in the house? and it didn't count? I certainly don't know every nuance of curling... but, I don't know of a reason why that wouldn't count. perhaps we'll see...
though a team can concede an end or a game. so maybe a score for the end had been decided on already. though in that case, I'm not sure why another stone would be thrown anyway.. /shrug
as for a club in H'borough... I dunno. ? would like to see one start in Raleigh, I'd certainly get into that :)

When your team scores in an end, the other team gets last rock in the next end. So, if there are no stones in the house and you have last rock, you have to decide whether you'd rather have the one point or the last rock in the next end.

There are actually curling lessons at the Wake Forest Factory ice rink - NCCanes, Guyute - Wanna do it??? I've been wanting to try.. Maybe I've been playing too much hockey and need something a little more sedate to replace one night a week. I think curling looks like a blast.
I'm so impressed Guyute!
And I think I looked into it at one point - I think there IS a club in Raleigh.

I actually grew up playing shuffleboard. not the old-people ground version, but the 24ft long table version. At one point I was Extremely good and rarely paid for my own drinks. dad and I wanted to build one in our basement, but it was a rather daunting task. and buying one... well... good luck buying a nice one.
anyway... it's a lot alike. on a smaller (and warmer) scale. the same kind of strategies though.
curling lessons/place to play is something to think about, yeah :)

Could you imagine? - a LGC.com curling team! lol - how fun could THAT be? SHC, Guyute, NCCanes (I'm guessing Shell, too, right?). I'll get some details tonight - we'll see what they have to offer.

That match (or whatever the hell you call it) was awesome! That one shot Cassie made...I'm sure you know which one if you watched....holy crap!! :eek2:
It kinda seems like Team USA doesn't so much have a curling team as they have the amazing Cassie Johnson and the other 3 who screw up more often than not, lol.
Why have male and female curling? Why not just co-ed teams?
And I just know CNBC did NOT just give away the results of the Nordic Skiing medal rounds that aren't on NBC until tonight. That would be really stupid, right?

I think in this day and age, it'd be just about impossible to not give up a spoiler every now and then.
My husband and I were just talking about this. When the events are happening at a 6-hour time zone difference, how do you make the broadcasts interesting, when the results are available all day on-line?
You'd have to pretty much stay away from computers all day long, if you want to be surprised, and not turn on the radio in your car. Hard to do.
I usually have MSNBC as my home page on my work computer, but I changed it to my husband's theater company, 'cause I know there'd be no Olympic stuff on it!

I agree, it's probably hard for most people to avoid spoilers and I probably shouldn't bother to try. But, I wouldn't think it would be hard for CNBC not to give up results on the events their network will be broadcasting later on tonight. Why do I even bother to watch it now? I guess they aren't interested in ratings?
When you work in an ICU ward and listen to Home Ice only it's not too hard to avoid results....until the stupid network broadcasting the delayed events spoils their own broadcast.
If I'd been watching CBS I'd have expected it. But I was watching CNBC. And it's not like they slipped up. The gave a news brief in the middle of the curling broadcast that included the results. Didn't even include them....it lead off with them!
NBC is showing figure skating now. Maybe they should just tell us who they'll show medaling at about 11pm so I can get some extra sleep tonight.
Oh well, it saves me the energy of the emotion I would have had if I'd seen it broadcast without already knowing. If the result had been different I'd be really pissed, though.

I actually already know that one, 'cause I walked in the break room at work this afternoon, and some people had the TV on, and I made the mistake of looking up, and saw the results crawling across the bottom of the screen!
If it makes you feel any better ---it's just the "short" program, so there's no medals today. They've got to do the "long" program tomorrow before they decide the medal winners.
And I heard about the combined skiing results, too! By accident!
Hmmmm.... I guess I know the speed skating women's results, too!
Why am I even bothering!!

NBC is showing figure skating now. Maybe they should just tell us who they'll show medaling at about 11pm so I can get some extra sleep tonight.
Why am I even bothering!!

well... we got home at 7:35, so I caught the last end of the women's match. definitely didn't see "the shot". just saw a blown rock by the women that would've at least made the Japanese knock it out, or tie and push to another end.
instead they gave them a freebie to win it. 0-3 start is not so good. men though are off to a 2-1 start.
oh, and I did catch a look at the rock-hat that Japanese guy was wearing. awesome :)

If I'd been watching CBS I'd have expected it.
I saw a WRAL news broadcast that actually warned viewers they were about to show results. I was impressed they'd keep you 'spoiler free' for a competing network, lol.

I have tried my damndest - more than once-- to try to like curling. For the life of me, I just can't. It's the equivalent of watching an apple turn brown to me.
I'm throwing out a challenge to y'all --
In a simple paragraph - no more than 4 sentences - explain to me what it is about curling that you like so much, and try to persuade me to give it another chance.
Talk amongst yourselves..... GO!!
