it was a great game. Sweden was justthismuchbetter today. I watched the rest of the game when I got back from the STH open practice today even though I knew Sweden won. nice to see them so excited. I always hate it when the silver is seen as a disappointment. I know they are so competitive and want to win so badly, but for those of us who don't have any chance of ever being in Olympic competition, it seems a shame to see it that way. I'm sure it will seem better later, but it's an Olympic medal. Enjoy it.

Congrats to Sweden on a great tourney and to the Finns as well. I too, found out at the STHer skate, having TiVo'd the game, hoping to watch when we got home - and a kid played spoiler just as I sat down to wait for the guys to come out. LOL. Figures.
We watched the whole thing, and what a game- and yeah, Sweden was just a tad better today, and the Finns should be proud, although you could see the bitter disappointment when they got their medals. Nothing to hang their heads about at all. The Swedes sure looked gleeful, and I personally loved that they had mic's on the ice to capture the boys singing their anthem. Sundin actually has a good singing voice!
If this doesn't say "hockey player" and put it all in the proper context, I don't know what does, especially since he did contribute to this huge win for the Swedes:
Niklas Kronwall had been added to the Swedish roster only a week earlier to replace defenceman Mattias Ohlund, who suffered rib and shoulder injuries.
Because he didn't play in the final, Ohlund would not normally get a medal. The Swedes will try to get him one anyway, but if that fails, Kronwall said he would gladly give his to the Canucks' blue-liner.
''If he doesn't end up getting another medal, I'm offering him the medal,'' said Kronwall. ''I feel he deserves it more than I do.''

If this doesn't say "hockey player" and put it all in the proper context, I don't know what does, especially since he did contribute to this huge win for the Swedes:
That's quite the admiral thing to do, given that many people often dream their entire lives of winning an Olympic medal.
That said, I'd really hope they'd give Ohlund his own medal. After all, he certainly did contribute to Sweden winning in the round robin portion of the tournament...just because he was unable to play in the medal round doesn't mean he didn't contribute to the team. He also deserves a medal.

I think that quote from Kronwell pretty well shows that the best team won.
Some Team USA'ers should take note.

WOW, you should have seen the reception here in Sweden! 50'000 people showed up at Medborgarplatsen in central Stockholm to greet the players when they arrived (well, Mattias Ohlund was in Vancouver but apart from him they were all here)... There where tears in the eyes of Sundin, Forsberg and Zetterberg and when Sundin was being interviewed for the national television his' voice faltered frequently, he he, what a guy! In the NHL I freakin' hate him but it's nice to have him in Team Sweden! :D :D
And btw, you should also have seen the reception the Finns got when they landed in Helsinki last night!!!! :D Wow!!!! 30'000 People waited up at the central square in helsinki 'til 03.00 in the night (and in tremendously cold weather that is currently tormenting both Sweden and Finland) for the players to arrive!!! (they showed up around 02.45, i think) If that is not love and national pride i do not know what is!!! Sometimes hockey seems so unfair, even though i am swedish and SOOOO happy right now I do feel that the Finns actually deserved the gold more than Sweden. It actually makes me think of Carolinas' race to the SCF - however this time the end result was inverted (i.e. Sweden being much like the Hurricanes the underdog and Finland being Detroit who if one takes the whole season/tournament into account was actually more of a deserving winner). Oh, well... they have a bright future ahead of them with that Nittymäki in goal. :D
and let me just get one thing straight... are people actually questioning whether sweden lost on purpose against Slovakia? Hmmm, if an athlete who, let's say, competes in the olympics by running 100m for his nation takes it sort of easy in the qualifying heat he is considered being tactically very smart. If he ends up winning the gold medal he is congratulated and receives admiration for his tactical manouvers in the qualifying stages that meant he had the most strength left when it really mattered the most... well, i just wanted to put this in perspective...
take care!

Great to hear that, Net!! :D
My husband is of Swedish descent (His grandparents came from the island of Gottland), and he's very happy today. He wore a shirt to work today that has the 3 crowns embroidered on the pocket, that he picked up when we visited Stockholm a few years ago.

If this doesn't indicate what a cluster-**** the NHL/Olympic relationship is, nothing does. "Nice job. Get back to work!"

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) - Sweden's hockey team returned home Monday to celebrate their Olympic gold medal, delaying their return to NHL teams.
Peter Forsberg, Mats Sundin and Sweden's other NHL players were originally scheduled to go directly from Turin to North America, where games are scheduled for Tuesday. But no one wanted to miss out on the celebrations hastily planned in the Swedish capital.
"It's a lot of fun to come home to Sweden," Forsberg said after the team arrived at Stockholm's Arlanda airport. "It might be a pretty long night."
Sources tell TSN that if any Olympic players, Swedes or otherwise, don't return to their NHL team in time to play regular season games the players may be docked pay for the number of days they are absent.
Individual NHL teams have the right to overlook a player’s unavailability if they so choose, but the NHL has made it abundantly clear all NHL players, as per the Olympic agreement, are supposed to be back with their NHL teams by no later than tonight.
Sources say the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation attempted to negotiate with the NHL an exemption for their gold-medal players, who are part of the celebration festivities today in Stockholm, but was told in no uncertain terms that all NHL players are expected back with their teams tonight and if they'e not, they may be subject to losing pay.
The Detroit Red Wings are likely to be the team most affected. The Red Wings have five Swedish Olympians – Nicklas Lidstrom, Henrik Zetterberg, Mikael Samuelsson, Niklas Kronwall and Tomas Holmstrom – and Detroit plays in San Jose and Anaheim on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
Forsberg said he would return to Philadelphia on Tuesday and hoped to play for the Flyers against the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday.
The team boarded a chartered bus that was to take them through the capital, before basking in Olympic glory in front of thousands of fans at a downtown square.
The hockey gold medal, capping Sweden's best ever Winter Olympics, was the top story in the country's biggest newspapers Monday. Tabloids Aftonbladet and Expressen printed special sections devoting dozens of pages to the 3-2 final win over Finland.
The Finns appeared to have recovered from the loss quickly with thousands of hockey fans braving freezing temperatures in Helsinki's central market square late Sunday to celebrate the country's silver medal.
A six-hour ceremony, with local singers performing on outdoor stages, culminated in the homecoming of the Finnish "Lions," who flew in on a chartered plane. Flag-waving fans greeted the team with shouts and screams at the icy waterfront square near the president's palace.
The Return of the Heroes, the Iltalehti tabloid splashed across its front page Monday. The country's largest newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat, said the Olympic silver was Finland's "all-time greatest hockey achievement."

The Red Wings have five Swedish Olympians – Nicklas Lidstrom, Henrik Zetterberg, Mikael Samuelsson, Niklas Kronwall and Tomas Holmstrom – and Detroit plays in San Jose and Anaheim on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

sorry, but docking these guys pay for a day or two while they go visiting before coming home is COMPLETELY acceptable in my book.
They have a contract to play for their NHL team. They're afforded a 15-16day break to play for their country. If they want to spend extra time on their break, then why should their NHL team pay them? that's a joke.

i completely agree with guyote... they are indeed proffessionals who get paid A LOT of money to do what most of us would love to do on a daily basis for free, so why should they get paid by their nhl teams if they aren't there to play for them. On the other hand I strongly doubt anyone of the players in neither the swedish nor the finnish team cares on a day like this... or like Niklas Lidström said on TV some ten minutes ago overlooking the crowd:
"...of all the things I've experienced as a hockey player, winning the S-Cup and all, nothing compares to this... this is what I've always dreamed of since I was a little boy..."
so losing what to him might seem like a small sum of money to be able to achieve the realisation of one of his lifelong dreams, well, i doubt that it bothers him much.
oh how i wish it will soon be Rod Brind'Amour saying those exact words overlooking the people of Raleigh! If it comes to that, you can bet i'll be on the first flight from Stockholm to be among you... for this day has so far been one of the most joyous experiences of my life!!!
