My TV listing shows the other 5 mens games live in a marathon on CNBC/UNiv HD from 5 am until about 5 pm, but the USA v Slovakia game on NBC at 2 pm, mixed in with a bunch of other sports in a block from 2 pm to 6 pm. Does this mean we will be seeing bits and pieces of the USA game, or will they be going to the other sports during intermissions and after the game is over?

Yep, on now...NBC 17.

They just showed Weight's family!! They're all decked out in Team USA gear and his kids have "Go Dad" signs.

Awesome.

Now, if they'll just find the taxi squad sitting in the stands.....

I don't know if anyone else has noticed but on the USA Hockey site they usually have a little pre-game notes thing you can download before each game. They've been pretty interesting.

They also have a little section in each once called "Top 5 Songs on the Board" and they list the top five songs of 2 different players every game. They did Cullen today....and Leopold, too. They've done Jason Blake and Hal Gill before.

Finally we score! Do you think Lavi could sneak Rolston home in his luggage?

Way to take a dive Chelios. Too old to keep up, so pretend they hit you hard. Diving is a summer sport bud.

Slovakia is showing why bringing so many slow, over the hill guys is a bad idea.

Finally we score! Do you think Lavi could sneak Rolston home in his luggage?

I'd go for that, although I think Gionta would take up less space in said luggage.
You can't have him!

This doesn't surprise me, to be honest.

IMO, Don Waddell as much as advertised that he didn't want to win when he named Hatcher and Chelios to the team (and gave Chelios the captaincy), and wouldn't put the superior goalie (Ryan Miller) in the nets.

Love my coach, love my 'Canes, but....

I saw that the score was 1-1 while I was out, so I only watched the 3rd period. That Chelios dive was an embarrassment. Guess he didn't consider he might not get the call and that he was sitting on his ass while they setup up the GWG instead of playing defense.

I would hate to see the US miss out on the medal round.

Yep, on now...NBC 17.

They just showed Weight's family!! They're all decked out in Team USA gear and his kids have "Go Dad" signs.

Awesome.

Now, if they'll just find the taxi squad sitting in the stands.....

I'll have to go back and watch, only caught the 3rd on the DVR so far. I think they showed some of Guerin's family a different day.

It's a conspiracy! The guys on the ice pretty much determine the outcome of the game...I don't think a one of them isn't in it to win it. Going in, we all knew Slovakia was the team to beat & they were & we didn't. End of story. On to the next opponent...

the US team is a slow, old team. Ton of talent, but it is aged and not fast enough to keep up with some of the elite teams. The best thing that can happen before the next olympics is that a fair amount of these guys will be retiring...time to resock with younger, speedier talent

I totally agree that not getting traffic to the net is Team USA's biggest problem.

As far as the overall games, the fact seems to me to be that Canada just isn't the only hockey powerhouse in the world anymore. The teams we've always looked at as second class--Latvia, Switzerland, Slovakia, etc--are catching up. There's just more parity than there has ever been. No team is a push-over anymore. And I think that's great. Great for hockey, great for my enjoyment of the games. Just so long as they all stay the hell off our goalie. ;)

i said the team is a combination of old and slow...the US is probably close to the bottom of the tournament in terms of team speed. that is a combination of guys who were never fast to begin with, and those too old to have legs underneath them.

Regardless, I am sure everyone is right when they say this isnt the case. The reason they must look average when compared to slovakia, russia, sweden, canada, switzerland, czech republic and finland is because USA hockey is behind the rest of the world.

i said the team is a combination of old and slow...the US is probably close to the bottom of the tournament in terms of team speed. that is a combination of guys who were never fast to begin with, and those too old to have legs underneath them.

Regardless, I am sure everyone is right when they say this isnt the case. The reason they must look average when compared to slovakia, russia, sweden, canada, switzerland, czech republic and finland is because USA hockey is behind the rest of the world.

The average age of Team USA is 31 years old. You guys are making me feel like the freakin' crypt keeper.

Really! Age isn't even an issue...some of these guys are playing the best hockey of their lives. Try another excuse...

wasnt an excuse it was an observation. Besides I am not sure I can see how a non participant can make an excuse?

Oh well, I thought before the tournament that canada could field a second team and they would be top three in the final standings, and the US would be lucky to even play for a medal...just way too much talent on the other teams...

Hopefully Chelios doesnt trash any hotel rooms on his way out of Italy

not defensive at all...actually looking for an opinion as to why the US is 1-1-1 in this tournament...

edit to add, traffic in front is a fair criticism...however, outside of cole I cant remember another player who has beat the opposition to the net in any of the games, and I can remember more defensive miscues where the defense was too slow to catch up with the opposition

Sarcastic, then.

actually looking for an opinion as to why the US is 1-1-1 in this tournament...

And you got it. We're not getting traffic to the net, we got outplayed, we're not the only dog in the race anymore....I saw all of those. You mean you were looking for an opinion you found valid, I guess? Which apparently is old and slow. I just don't know that I agree that that is the #1 issue.

I might agree that we have too many players whose primary strength is more in a checking role and less in a skating role and therefore are not as well suited to the International game. But mostly I think they aren't working hard enough or well enough as a team.

we are almost saying the same thing then. where I differ is it is not an issue of being outworked. After watching all 3 of the games, outside of the latvia game, I think this team is busting its collective humps to get it done, and it just isnt working. I am not seeing lazy plays that would make me think work ethic was an issue. What I am seeing is guys get beat badly and that makes me think speed is an issue.

edit to add, traffic in front is a fair criticism...however, outside of cole I cant remember another player who has beat the opposition to the net in any of the games, and I can remember more defensive miscues where the defense was too slow to catch up with the opposition

Cole, Gionta, Gomez and Blake all seem to be able to keep up with every one, however I agree the D is defintraly killing us, Chelios seems to be making most of the mistakes, and Hatcher is playing better than I though he would IMHO.

I think the more we play the better we will get, of course so will most of the other teams. Of course hopefull the can get on a roll like the canes did after the first few games :)

Oh, the sarcasm was loud and clear. Just oddly placed for someone not being defensive, I thought.

Anyway, not going to the net is an effort issue, IMO. They're not willing to make the sacrifice....everyone wants to make the pretty pass instead of do the dirty work at the net. Everyone likes the perimeter. Well, one problem with that is Cole on the point on the PP. Put the ox in front of the net....just not in the crease, of course.

I think Hatcher is doing a pretty good job as well. He's not nearly as slow as everyone makes him out to be. Or, maybe he is but he's like Wesley in that his positioning makes up for it. IMO, the Murder City twins (Chelios and Schneider) have had absolutely brutal moments....if not brutal games.

nothing to do with the game, but hearing Pierre during the game with Sweden made me think of it. yesterday when Strbak (sp?) hurt his finger, Pierre described it as "bleeding profusely from the one near the end." just made me laugh out loud. Pierre was either having word finding difficulties or did very poorly in anatomy
